The Just Cause games aren’t very good. They don’t have good stories, they all launched with a lot of bugs, they have very myopic gameplay systems, and yet, they’re bizarrely memorable. To put it simply, they offer a grand escape into a realm of escapist entertainment; we take control of Rico Rodriguez, a rough and tumble mercenary military specialist who can rock bell bottoms as well as he can steal a commercial airliner from a major airport without anyone noticing. I’d call them junk food games: there’s no substance here, just fluff. And, just like cotton candy, it’s still enjoyable to consume even though there’s nothing really here. It’s just explosions and C4 and I thoroughly enjoy all of these games.

The logic of this video just seems fundamentally flawed to me. A fans having issues, being flawed or having things ‘missing’ does not inherently make it a bad game. It makes it a relatively imperfect game, and means it is in no way flawless. This however does not automatically equal ‘bad’.
If they’re great fun to you, and as you claim, a lot of other people; then it is likely a good game. Just because you don’t seem to be able to articulate why it’s good, doesn’t mean its good qualities aren’t concrete and definable.
I would say a lot of people think these games are great because they are big sandbox games with some mechanics that are deep to use as well as having good game feel (eg the grappling). I’m sure there are other strengths of the game that people love too.

I think you missed some huge points in the failure of JC4. The explosion and destruction effects were hugely watered down in comparison to JC3, and the game no longer encourages blowing those red things up. But I do agree with your conclusion that making a new JC with a huge leap forward in gameplay is a hard task to accomplish.
There are numerous comparison videos on CZcams between JC3 and JC4, and one common observation is that explosion and water is no where near the what they were in JC3. Same sentiment exists on reddit. Yes JC3 was very challenging to the hardware on release and had a large amount of optimization problems, but most gamers can see that it has some really good explosion effects and pleasing graphics. These are almost all gone in JC4.
A huge reason why JC2/3 were so popular among fans is blowing things up are both exciting and absolutely required to progress. In JC2/3, base/town/city liberation by blowing up every red thing you can see was a huge part of the progression. Player was then provided with more amazing and explosive weapons/powers to blow stuff up in even more creative and spectacular fashion. JC4, however, decides to strip those all out and replace base liberation with the worst type of missions, escort missions, and the new "army of chaos" progression system means it is no longer necessary to explore the map and blow up any and all infrastructures. Indeed, blowing red things up is no longer a core part of JC4 progression. Even the game stops tracking what and how many red oil tanks there are left for you to blow up in a military base.
To me and many fans, Just Cause is always just explosions, crazy and creative ways to blow stuff up, unlock crazy equipment and blowing even more stuff up in crazier and more creative ways. I would argue that why making a new satisfying JC is a very hard task is because of the slow progression in physics simulation. Graphics has been hugely improved in the past decade. Real-time photorealistic rendering is beyond the wildest dream 10 years ago, but doable on new hardware with relative ease. Physics simulation, however, hardly see any progress. And since JC heavily relies on player getting creative with its physics system (i.e. applying forces on cars/structures/people with rocket motors/tethers/explosives), it would be very hard to make a giant leap from what JC3 has already achieved.

You forgot the stupid fucking "squat in a tiny circle and slowly pick off dudes" mechanic.

No one has mentioned the gear challenges in jc3 which I personally loved since almost every challenge felt unique, especially the races and wingsuit courses, they rewarded you with upgrades to rebel drop vehicles, rebel drop cooldowns, grapnel upgrades, the list goes on for a little while.
Jc4 comes around and what is there? Over 200 boring stunts that are just go through ring in x vehicle, go through ring at y speed and fly through 3 rings in z amount of time.
As a completionist, this fucking sucks since none of these feel unique anymore, and the other two characters have basic missions or random events to earn points with them.
What do you even get for doing this? Grapple hook modifications that are either unnecessary or should've been on by default.

Just Cause 2, today even still when played on it's max settings, STILL looks absolutely phenomenal from the sky. It also has the, in my opinion, the most realistic biomes of the 4 current games. I love how snowy areas, it will take miles and miles of land before it becomes dry. In the other games, you can just cross a few roads and the biomes suddenly change, like it went below negative temperature to a sunny beach in seconds. Just Cause 2 was also the last game I enjoyed driving in and using the vehicles. Though the wingsuit was a massive benefit to traversal in 3 and 4, I felt like it really killed off the hundreds (even just cause 1 had over 80!) of vehicles. I still remember, or I think I do, the "Sakumura" sports car you could find in 2 that I would try and drive around the world from one side, to the other without crashing it. Speaking of, holy hell that game had amazing, albeit janky but still fun physics! Flipping a tuk tuk down a hill at 100mph really felt like intense, especially with the camera movement and the way most vehicles would flip. Thank for the review!
edit; I want to add in, I played the demo of Just Cause 2 for HOURS on PS3 because you could glitch yourself outside of the playable map, which broke the demo timer and let you go back into the playable area (which was huge! I think 32sq miles) and play for an unlimited amount of time. Does anyone else remember doing this?

my biggest gripe with JC4 is that the game made destruction (almost) irrelevant. You just need to do ONE mission and the location is liberated. After that i just need to do some stunt stuff to 'complete' the locations. Causing the destruction is not rewarded. ALSO, destroying stuff AFTER the mission feels stupid. Cause the rebel army took over the military factory. So now if you destroy the fuel tanks and satellites it would mean you are damaging YOUR own assets.
In JC3, the destruction was tied to liberation of an area which means I MUST destroy the military assets to liberate the location. But in JC4 I do not NEED to wreck havoc. I do it just because I wanna see a cool explosion.

When concerning the villians of Just Cause 1&2 I find them super forgetable to the point that I've already forgoten their names.
Just Cause 3 had Sebastiano Di Rivelo and all though he was extremely 1 dimesional, he was still featered in a bunch cutscenes and there audio logs hidden through out the map that explain his backstory. Rico also has a personal reason as to why he wants Di Rivelo dead is because when Di Rivelo took the country for himself, his soldiers were killing hondreds of civileans including Rico's parents.
Just Cause 4's had Gabrielela hyped up as the main antagonist, but that ends up being a lie. Instead we're dealing with Oscar Espinosa who - just like all the other villians - is 1 dimesional. Both he end her don't have a lot of screen time which almost makes them as forgetable as the villians from the 1st 2 Just Cause games. This results in Gabrielela being redeemed at the end of the game without it feeling earned. Also, I don't like the plot-twist involving Espinosa being the REAL reason why Rico's parents are dead as it retroactivly underminds Di Rivelo as a villian.
Just Cause 5 is a game that doesn't exist (yet), however the Just Cause 4 ended it's pretty safe to say The Agentcy is on the chopping block next. The question is: Will it take place on US soil or will there be another country that Rico has liberate from a dictator who is directly linked to The Agentcy in order to shut down the organisation?

I regard it as my favorite game of all time, haha.
I used to play with LEGO for houuurs after primary school for years and then after that JC3 was my go-to game while I was still in early highschool. I think JC is the same kind of animal as LEGO, you make the challenge, story, and fun all by yourself. The open world was just like a big plastic container of unsorted bricks, it was all so open and unorganized that my brain naturally gravitated towards organizing it and setting my own little silly challenges to 'master it' in a weird way. I can confidently say that I may be one of the most proficient JC3 players on the planet and I don't regret it for a seccond, I can always go back for a few hours of mindless fun whenever I feel like it.

I would love to hear your take on the Gothic series sometime. It's a very niche series of (dark) fantasy RPGs that were mainly popular in Central and East Europe but the open world design is just amazing. It was the game series that really got me into gaming. It's a very flawed game series but for me it stands out mainly through its unique and rough charm (though being originally a German game I guess that alot of its original charm is lost in translation).
It is a very interesting and influential series and with THQ Nordic announcing a Remake of the first Game and actually having released a playable Teaser to see how people would react, getting alot of Feedback from die hard fans and actually listening to that Feedback and starting from scratch to live up to the expectations of the fans (how well this turns out in the end is another question).
I think there are alot of interesting things that you could talk about in regard to this game series. But I do understand if it's just not worth the effort since like I said it is a very niche series of games that wasn't very popular over in the States (or the west in general).

    A couple of notes:
Great video overall, I just found your channel and as a big fan of the series it was cool to see it brought up. Second I'm pretty sure Just Cause 4 actually has a max of 10 tethers so yeah. Also they did actually try having that loss/revenge trope you mentioned, as Rico's father is mentioned multiple times throughout the story.
Anyway, I think for the fifth game they should probably give Rico the Red Dead Redemption treatment like you mentioned by having him get some kind of successor, have them interact throughout the story and then have Rico killed off somewhere near the end of the game and then have us play as the successor. Maybe even not kill Rico off but just have him permanently retire since he's canonically getting pretty old.
Edit: Also what they should probably do for the next entry regarding tornadoes and all of that is just give the players a gun that can spawn a tornado and lead it anywhere like the DLC lighting gun from JC3. I'd love to see a tornado just absolutely ripping through a military base. I think since we're probably also going to have enemies that have the ability to grapple like Rico (as teased by JC4's Danger Rising DLC) it would also be a great idea to expand vertical gameplay by giving the player the ability to freely walk on surfaces like the sides of buildings or even the underside of cargo jets. Something similar to Spider-Man Web of Shadows but less clunky lol. I also think they could sprinkle in a couple of boss battles here and there.

It inspired so many games and now it's following every other game (Going Open World/Seme-Open Action RPGs). If that happened to DMC, it would be the death of the genre.

    • @98sucoo
      @98sucoo Před 2 lety

Not only that... The shift in the story also changed a lot... Like the DMC thing is: Over the top action and show off, with a badass protagonist who jokes every second... Imagine if in the sequel, Dante became a serious person who just followed the mission does a little show off and goes home (Exactly what happens in DMC2), or even like the reboot, they keep the style of the old games but change the story and the feeling the game (I really like Devil may cry dmc too, but I prefer the original series much more).
God of war was violent and brutal with a protagonist who didn't care about anyone but himself, he just wants to complete his goal of killing the Gods, almost being a villain (which would actually be an anti-hero) and now he's a character who's trying to put the past behind him and continue his life with his son... It's an ok narrative, it makes sense... But it still changes a lot about what the game was and why I liked the old games.
The character style that Kratos was before and the kind of story that was told in the previous games, there will never be one like it again.

The narrative, while average, gets the job done in giving you a decent objective for which you're causing all the creative destruction and chaos. In fact, I'd argue that Just Cause 3 had a "good" (above mediocre) story with memorable characters (like Di Ravello and Mario Frigo). Gameplay, combat, and visuals are top notch in all the Just Cause games. In fact, Just Cause 2 graphically and physics-wise was far ahead of its time and still holds up.

Did anyone else think they tried to make Rico in JC3 look like a hispanic Nathan Drake? I mean they compleatly overhauled his look between 2 and 3.

Went back and started playing JC2 again. It's more than I had remembered. Starting from the beginning. Looking forward to it.

JC4 felt like a huge step back from JC3.
Not talking the technical issues, my PC somehow managed to run this thing well even at launch.
It felt like a watered down version. In JC3, you go around cause as much chaos as possible, you blow shit up, everything you do advance the plot. It's a popcorn game, mindless fun, but that's it, you're having fun. I played both JC2 and 3 when they were new, got such good memories from both, but I think the wing suit was enough to make JC3 stand out over 2. As you said, its so hard going back.
In JC4, you go around, you have to hit specific stunts, you have to drive through rings, etc. Sure, you can blow shit up, but it's not nearly as fun when it doesn't feel like its having an impact anymore. Those oiltanks you blew up 10 minutes ago just respawns when you drive back around the corner.
I'd actually be happy if JC4 was just a copy of JC3 with a new map and improved flight controls and graphics, but it wasn't. It was so much less.

i played the living hell of JC2 as a teenager on my 360. My favorite thing to do was grabbing a flatbed truck and trying to place a random car in the flatbed, then trying to transport said car from one edge to the other edge of the map. When i bought JC2 on Steam, even tho my pc was a literal potato back then, i was surprised how well it ran.

2010. Just Cause 2 and M&B:Warband came out and I spent the whole year playing them. Good memories, probably the only one left from that year.

Tbh the just cause games is like my literal dopamine factory, as a kid who love explosions in movies and badass hero's it hits that certain itch that most 80s and 90s kids grew up with and adored for so long, and that fun dopamine factor is one of the reason why we love it in my opinion.

This guy has become my new favorite game reviewer because there's just something about the way this guy talks and I don't know it's weird but whatever he does it makes me interested and want to watch.

JC3 I think is a model example of movement in an open world. That and BoTW are my go to examples for how movement should feel. I rarely ever used fast travel in those because moving across the map was so enjoyable and it increases immersion for me.

you ignored 3's contribution to the physics. It was the first entry in the franchise with physics that arguably felt cutting edge. Toppling towers with lateral pulls of the wires is very satistying

15:30 You know what makes it even more stupid? With such a large map, Just Cause 2 runs pretty well on PS3 and XBOX 360 consoles and even on PCs, even on PCs you don't need "gaming" specifications to play this game well.
