also Luke, as an old time fan of mafia I like Mafia 3 for what it tried but I hate how much of a technical downgrade it is from mafia 2 both in shooting, driving, graphics, physics, and especially- opportunities. You can literally steal and tune any car from the street in 2, you can rob gunstores, and depending on if u left the clerk alive or not, the aftermath will look different etc etc..

I 100% agree with you on the opinion regarding Mafia 3 and it’s honest portrayal of racism in the south. It’s a story that should be told in all its ugly glory. That being said as a black man there is a particular POV that I understand and sometime have regarding certain entertainment that wallow in the struggle & trauma of the African American experience. As a culture many of us are tired of watching “struggle stories”. Usually the context of this frustration comes from generations of media that ONLY told stories of black racial trauma instead of stories that represent us in a more varied light. With that in mind I can understand some criticism but not the “just never talk about the bad stuff okay?” variety. I am of the opinion make your story and let people decide if that is an experience they want to engage with or not, but just dismissing them and their existence because they are difficult is foolish.

    • @bishbosh4815
      @bishbosh4815 Před rokem +13

It's interesting to hear from a black person how you feel about things that white people are trying to do for your benefit, i.e. trying to like... shine a light on racism and be apologetic and bring it up all the time to make people aware and reminded of history and racism today. Sometimes I wonder if it can get too much and how much is too much. Like I spoke to a German recently who says they get Nazi history thrown in their face every day as a constant reminder of what their people did, obviously the shoe is on the other foot but it's the same thing of bringing up history all the time. It's important to know and learn about history and not repeat it, and it's important to create a space where people can talk about their experience and shared traumas, but we don't need to talk about it all the time to the point it's actually distressing and annoying

@@bishbosh4815 This is going to be long but I hope you read...
I just want to give a little perspective of why America's racist history gets brought up so often by black Americans (and why some are indignant about it).Its not always a gotcha moment or a "You are white feel bad about it." thing. A fact that gets omitted from conversations is that for some; the wounds of slavery are fresher than you would think. And I'm not just talking about the echoes of it in society today.
      (You can skip this!
For context I am twenty-one from a small town in Mississippi and my family has lived there over 200 years. They have lived on and around the plantation that they were enslaved on since way before slavery ended. (It's called The Saragossa Plantation) My family stayed in the employ of the decedents of The Saragossa Plantation till the 1980's when they were given the land. My dad ,who was around ten at the time, remembers going to work for them with his grandmother (who is still living).
From childhood this is what have I known, so when I would here people say "Oh, it was so long ago" or " Why are you always bringing it up" it would leave a bad taste in my mouth; because what others will view as trivial sad stories or an incident deep in the past is my family history. )
I bring up slavery because that is the epicenter of the racial tension in America with black people. Imagine for a majority of your grade school career even in college you hear, read about and watch the subjugation and mistreatment of your people, you go home to the land that your people were enslaved on, you go to town where people are looking at you with contempt because you dared to buy a book out of their store, you go online to see people being racist still. It is like you can't escape from it. I'll admit it creates bitterness towards people who don't have to go trough that, or when they say it make them uncomfortable; because I and others like me have been uncomfortable their entire lives. Even now I still get nervous when there are to many white people around after hearing the experiences from my family. The stupid amount 'Oops I drove up on the Klan!' stories I have heard is ridiculous.
TLDR: Some of the people who bring these topics up often are coming from a place of exhaustion from living and learning about their and their families continued oppression while others have the privilege of blissful ignorance. (This goes for other black people too.)
If you got this far I really appreciate it!

The visuals were at least 4 years ahead. Shooting was realistic, guns had recoil, enviroments were realistic (i hate that cover-based shooter mision design). I beg to differ. The problem with the original Mafia is that it's just clunky and slow as fuck. Was it very ambitious, very expansive and had a great narrative for the time? Sure. But no matter how much you didn't mind the fact that it doesn't try to be a good game it's still going to take you hours and hours of driving around slowly, punching enemies by repeatedly spamming clunky punch animations and gaming the gun play so that you can have a chance. My proof is that I to this day remember the last mission I played before giving up on the game: the one were you stack up crates for 20 minutes straight at the docks. I've just reached this same spot in the remake (literally before clicking this video) and I'm clocking up half the amount of time played for the same amount of exposure (that is really not that much).
Yea, the original Mafia was crazy good, specially considering that it was GTA's 3 main competitor. But goddamn did it not value the player's time.

Honestly, after having so many games, movies and other forms of media that just botched the narrative, made it needlessly goofy and shat on the viewers/players, it was really refreashing playing Mafia Definitive Edition. Serious as a heart attack despite cracking jokes in certain scenes. Despite shooting being lackluster in certain places (some guns just don't feel like they have the oomph. Especially the sniper - despite being able to take enemies in 1-2 shots, somethings missing. Maybe lack of visible wounds, such as staggers, ragdolls and dismemberment. Though it does stun enemies for you to initiate takedown, so... It's like it's nudging in the right direction, but doesn't get there) I was very fond of the narrative, and I liked driving - felt really grounded.
It's a shame that this game is kind of underrated - I don't think it ever reached 1 million in sales, and it definitely deserves more than that. Certainly more than GTA Definitive Trilogy, or Saints Row Reboot - two of it's closest competitors, release wise.

You're kidding? GTA IV, hands-down, has the best mechanics and gameplay in the series. It might not be as smooth as GTA V, but the gunplay is absolutely better in IV, and so are the physics and interactions with the game world. If anything, the world of GTA V feels much more primitive compared to GTA IV's simply because it doesn't have nearly as much interactivity with the game world and depth in it's side-activities and map. And while the driving does feel pretty stiff, once you adjust to it, it's easily the best driving in the series.
That doesn't mean GTA V is a bad game, far from it, but I'd say GTA IV takes the cake in so many more aspects. Just about the only things inferior in it are the graphics and the size of the game world as well as character and vehicle customization, but that's not where GTA IV's core mechanics and gameplay focus lie.

As a fan of racing sims, I think Mafia has some of the best driving mechanics! I'll admit, that gameplay-wise, for the kind of game it is, the Driving in GTA 5 is about perfect (Maybe I liked 4 more because it felt slightly less arcady than 5). It's objectively true, it feels really good to drive in GTA games, it's intuitive but not without any challenge. But Mafia is so cool about it (especially the remake of 1). If you ever get to drive a big ol land boat from the 1930s, driving in Mafia makes so much more sense. You have to treat the cars as being really heavy and with loose, bouncy suspension. They have really thin tires that don't get traction and have a lot of difficulty turning the car at speed. The brakes suck. They suck more because the cars are heavy. But, once you realize all that and start treating the cars as the big, primitive steel steeds they are, it becomes a lot of fun and really satisfying to get good at driving them.
Pro tip-those skinny tires don't have a lot of lateral grip. It's different than drifting a modern car, but you can get really fast once you figure out how to intentionally throw your balance off during braking, so that your rear-end slides perfectly in alignment with right turns.
