- Just a quick looks at Star Trek Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 5, Parth Ferengi's Heart Place. I loved seeing Rom and Leeta again, and I loved the stuff with Tendi and Rutherford in this episode!

My hope with the Tendi/Ruthorford plot was that it was meant to show that they do have chemistry, just not when they feel pressured to put in a stereotypical married couple context
Side note: cop landlords may be my favorite gag this season
Yeah, that makes sense. There was definitely some weirdness to being pressured to act that way, it's just really cute how oblivious they both still are. 😅
We love Cop Landlords but only if they're Ferengi 😂😂😂
Yeah, I think Rutherford slipped up a little *too* much for their relationship to be 100% platonic.
For real 😂 "gorgeous green eyes"
@@renrants And _"captivating."_ 😁
@@BrasswatchmanIt’s definitely a part of Rutherford that remained even after his “reset”…he’s always loved her and always will and she knows this…
Just wish they would finally admit that their feelings had never changed and never will…❤️
I just realized a cold open that LD could do. Pakleds sell "arms" to the Ferengi. They strike a deal. Later the Ferengi discover they've been sold... dismembered arms. Final line is a Pakled saying, "We are smart."
Love it 😅
That pained thumbs up after the copaganda line killed me. That was a legit Lower Decks quality gag right there. 🤣
Omg thank you 😂😂
The ONLY thing I felt lacking with this episode was Rom and Leeta not taking half a second to talk up his Starfleet Officer son to A DAMNED ADMIRAL (which would also have been a tribute to the late Aron Eisenberg, and an assurance that while he may be gone, Nog lives on). It would've taken maybe fifteen seconds, warmed our hearts, and given depth to having Rom back in Trek.
Excellent point, it is a bummer Nog didn't even get a mention 🥺
Oh my Blessed Exchequer this! Make a requirement for Ferengi entry is Nog get immediately promoted to Commodore… brag on him… something! Rom and Leeta are exceptionally proud parents and them not taking the opportunity to put in a good word with the admiralty was sad!
I noticed with the Ferenghi ship getting blasted by the new ship their screaming continued even though they'd seemingly been vapourised, so maybe they're not dead.
I hope they're not all dead 🥺 I kind of suspect they're just being snatched but I guess we'll see
I guessed from the first episode where the Klingon ship we've followed several times in previous seasons got unceremoniously vaporized that the "weapon" is more of an overcharged transporter beam. It wouldn't make sense for the writers to offhandedly kill off characters they've put some effort into fleshing out like that. Why the unidentified ship is doing this or what they are doing with their kidnapped vessels is the biggest question remaining.
But the "USS Scroll Mouse," as I refer to it, blasted the Romulan and Klingon ships to pieces. So it's a combination phaser/transporter ray? Blasting metal to pieces while simultaneously beaming organics? Sounds like a stretch even in Star Trek.
@@josephsheranda We've seen far weirder.
Have watched a few reviews of this ep and this one is really the first to even notice or acknowledge Mariner's behavior. Her story is genuinely starting to get dark, with her frantic, almost desperate pounding of alien booze and picking that fight with almost no pretext or cause. Her self sabotage is morphing into self destruction and others (in this case Quimp) getting caught in the crossfire. Fitting that Quimp calls out her worsening behavior in a memorial park, a place of memory and sadness. Played for laughs, of course, as the Ferengi mourn lost profits and fortunes. There is, however, that one marker labeled "Dominion War". A hint perhaps? I'm actually glad they didn't resolve her problems neatly in this ep and I doubt it'll happen this season (too much build-up with that small ship), but there's more to Mariner's story and the hints we've been getting are getting darker.
Ooh that's very insightful! I definitely agree that her story is getting darker, and the spillover of her actions onto others is probably going to. Continue to escalate too, but I think we see her finally starting to question why she does the things she does a little more, so hopefully we'll get some resolution there even if it's in season 5 or beyond!
Don't forget that we have the on-screen trauma of Mariner's best friend being EATEN ALIVE by her own fiancee aboard the Quito.
Oh yeah, that was A Lot ™️
11:01 Isn't he just? Also, notice that this conversation takes place nearby not just any lost profit memorial - but for those lost in the Dominion War. Foreshadowing, maybe?
Oh wow, great catch!
One of my favourite visual gags from this episode is when Boimler is watching the Cop Landlords show they do the Sluggo Cola product placement. When he observes that they even have commercials within the shows, the painting behind him is basically the Paramount logo. A delightful sight gag, I think.
Great catch, I love how detailed this show is
Leeta and Rom! I hope they are originally voiced.
They are! ❤️
@@renrantsSo glad Lower Decks was able to be the series that brought this about…they’ve now officially set a major change to franchise continuity, I’m betting no one could’ve expected an “adult animated comedy” designed to essentially be an anniversary episode every week to pull such a change off, yet here we are! 😍❤️
It’s now set…Ferenginar enters the United Federation of Planets during the LD Season 4 episode “Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place”, making this a must-watch episode for ANY fan interested in following such moments within the franchise…👍🏻😅😁
@@christopheralthouse6378 Yes, but also no. It really depends on the individual. There are so many disparate iterations of Star Trek at this point that fans are picking and choosing their preferred head-canon. Myself for example: I'm 100% on-board with everything up through ST:Ent., but ST:D is a non-starter for me after season 2. I really only watched ST:D to understand the backstory for ST:SNW. Anyone who's watched SNW will have seen the LD crossover episode from three months ago. Again, for context the viewer will need to have watched at least one episode of ST:LD to understand why the characters in the crossover episode acted so weird compared to the typical format. For all other backstory there's Wikipedia, which is the equivalent of Cliff's Notes for pop culture.
@@josephsheranda And what does any of that have to do with a major continuity shift which just occurred within the franchise? So you would rather find out about Fereginar’s entry into the UFP from a Wikipedia page instead of actually seeing it happen just to avoid watching an episode from a show you don’t like to witness just how well that series delivered that change?
I’m not big into DS9 but “Under The Pale Moonlight” is a pivotal one which I watched for that reason and now love because of just how well the inner pathos of Commander Sisko’s actions as he relays them to the audience conveys the dark atmosphere of the Dominion War beautifully like I had never expected…
@@christopheralthouse6378 Actually, you're exactly right. I would rather read plot points from Wikipedia than force myself to sit through a show I don't want to watch. I don't need to go back to TNG and rewatch "Force of Nature" just to have the backstory why there is a line in ST:Generations about being given permission to exceed warp 5. If I hadn't seen that episode I could have found the exact same context by watching the Easter Eggs breakdown of ST:Generations on CZcams. A person doesn't have to consume every release of media to be a knowledgeable fan of a franchise.
I loved this episode! Literally my only quibble and it was a a small one- I had hoped that Nog would be referenced. I know seeing him isn’t possible, but a reference from his proud parents would have put this one over the top for me. But it was still really great!
For real, someone else pointed out it was a great opportunity to talk him up to the admiral since he's in Starfleet 🥺
@@renrantsNow that you mention it, yeah…it is a real shame they didn’t do that as it falls right in line with LD’s whole original premise…basically an anniversary episode every week presented as an adult animated comedy. Cadet Nog HIMSELF made history as the very first Ferengi to enter Starfleet Academy, pursuing a different sort of profit…one of knowledge instead of financial gains. It was the culmination of the long-running arc of Nog and Jake’s friendship aboard DS9 as children close in age who simply found more similarities than differences between them, even as Ferengi society in general still looked down on “hoo-mons”. From Jake, Nog learned of the benefits of a life free of the stresses of constant financial pursuits in favor of something far greater. This friendship very likely played a huge role in Rom himself becoming far more friendly towards the Federation than most Ferengi of his generation likely would’ve been…
Nog was the first big step towards where we are now, had it not been for his friendship with Jake Sisko and the influence that had on both Rom and Quark, I’m not certain we would now be witnessing Fereginar’s entry into the UFP now…
A simple mention would’ve been nice…😢
The EP title is based on: Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
You can see one of the writer's saying, hey you know what rhymes with Marenghi...
That's such a great detail!
I'd really like to see them bring back Andrew Robinson to voice Garak at some point. It would be a great opportunity to canonize his queerness and close out his character arc, which pretty much just ended with that speech to Julian in the Founder control room in the 2nd to last episode of DS9. We know from a book that he became the Cardassian ambassador to the Federation, but don't know what he did with the position or really how Cardassia has handled its (hopeful) de-Nazification.
For real that would seriously be so great 😭😭
Yes! We NEED Garak! We also need Avery Brooks! This show is giving more love to DS9 than the networks ever did!
Quark's Federation Experience... I have been there several times... back when it was Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas. Great stuff!
I need it to be a real restaurant 😭
@@renrants I hope you had a chance to visit Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton before they shut it down. It was awesome, and Quark's restaurant and bar was right there in the center of it all.
I didn't 😭😭😭😭 heartbreaking
That sounds so cool though, I hope something like it is created again some day
@@renrants Oh no! How tragic! It was so amazing. After walking through the history of Star Trek (a museum of sorts featuring props from every series and a detailed timeline of events), you got beamed aboard the Enterprise-D, starting in the transporter room. Then, a Starfleet officer escorts you through a corridor to the bridge where Riker and Geordi explain what is going on. Then, while in the turbo lift on the way to the shuttle bay, the ship is attacked by the Klingons. Following is a harrowing shuttle ride through space while being attacked by a Klingon Bird of Prey ending with a safe return to the present and the Las Vegas Hilton. You emerge from the basement onto the DS9 promenade, complete with lots of shops filled with things for sale, in true Ferengi fashion. It was awesome!
Spoiler alert for episode 7! Recurring character revealed in episode title! Do not click unless you want to be spoiled!
IMDB has published the title of episode 7 as "A Few Badgeys More."
"Guess who's coming to dinner..." -Chekov
Oooooooh. 😁
How about a "Short Trek" of just the Rutherford and Tendi compliments! Also, did you notice the background "Un-clothed" Ferengi woman? A Nice touch...but not for weird reasons. For canon ones of course.
I totally missed her 😂
I need that short trek 😢🥺
I would like it more than most of the VERY Short Treks.@@renrants
If I remember correctly, she was at a table way in the back of the Starfleet Experience behind Tendi or Rutherford. She was half obscured by her chair.@@renrants
@windgraceproject I actually haven't watched them yet 😅
7:59 Turns out Ferengi biker gangs are super chill! Who woulda thunk?
This episode is great fun! Everyone's lobes were working overtime to make us laugh!
Many have the lobes for business, but few have the lobes for comedy like the Lower Decks gang 😅
@@renrantsProps to Capt. Freeman though…she proves herself once again as amongst the best in Starfleet with how she’s able to effortlessly scam Grand Nagus Rom in mere seconds, in a way far worse than any of the various scams Grand Nagus Rom himself had pulled on the Admiral and all with just a little bit of fine print hidden under promises of HUGE financial profit for low effort…just bring in one planet and you get EVERYTHING the admiral just agreed to plus 1 billion bars of gold-pressed latinum as a signing bonus…
The fine print reveals what specific planet Fereginar has to bring in…😅😂🤣
Sooooooo funny…yet also DAMN cool! And it WORKS, making Capt. Carol Freeman now a proven successful negotiator who has made history by successfully getting the Grand Nagus to sign the original Federation Charter and officially bring the Ferengi into the United Federation of Planets, capping off one of the longest dangling plot threads left over post-VOY…😁
Like it or not, LD just made history in true Star Trek fashion, setting their own very unique legacy within the franchise itself…❤️
Your use of the word upsetti is great and just too cute for me LOL
❤️❤️❤️❤️
One thing I think was a little bit off about this episode was Rutherford's reaction to Tendi's joke about going topless in their room. It was established in a previous season that the ensigns use a non-gender-segregated communal shower, and the writers explain (rightly, imo) that a society like the Federation is likely to care significantly less about casual or functional nudity. Granted, the only member of the main cast we see in that shower is Mariner, but there's also the episode where a towel-wrapped Tendi sits on Boimler's bed to give him a much-needed talking to about his lack of confidence. This is not taken wierdly by Boimler at all. Tendi just got out of the shower, noticed her friend needed talking to, and talked to him. No sexual tension was even implied, because that's not the nature of their relationship and the Federation is better than that, damnit!
Given this...why is it implied Rutherford has never seen Tendi topless? Why would his brain misfire (in a damnably relatable way smh) at the joke? Given prior worldbuilding elements that simply shouldn't have been a problem.
I think it may have been the added romantic discomfort he was already feeling that made it suddenly fess platonic and overly conscious
You're forgetting that the image wasn't just her being topless. It was her being topless in *his shorts.* The Sexy Shirt Switch is a trope for a reason.
I asked the same question on a different channel. It didn't make sense to me either until someone pointed out that intent and context matter. It's one thing when being naked in front of someone is part of your job; for example, a model who poses nude for an anatomical art class. It's also situational: a communal shower involves lots of people naked who are trying their best to keep a straight face, but being naked with just one other person in private makes you the center of attention. Lastly, it's meaningful that Tendi said she would wear HIS shorts; that's a very girlfriend-territory move that he probably wasn't expecting. Lots of nuances that an autism-spectrum person like myself didn't quite key in on the first time around.
Great a analysis!
a side from The Orville this maybe my favorite Star Trek series even though I maybe a huge Star Ward Nerd but I do enjoy some Star Trek shows from time to time But Lower Decks is definitely my favorite Star Trek series
I do love The Orville, I Stil need to Review the most recent season but I had a great time watching it!
Kinda like how they make fun of Starfleet's history of being Overly Appeasing in Diplomacy
Oh that's a good point 😂 the admiral was being an absolute pushover
😂😂😂😂😂 I NEED TO MAKE AN ITINERARY 😂😂😂😂😂 "horniest least committed crew in Starfleet" GODDAMN MIKE 😂😂😂😂. Also the Toronto is another Parliament class
Both of those bits made me cackle 😂😂
@@renrants like I said I was right proper wheezing in this episode and that that cheeky bit about advertising in TV shows while Boimler sitting right in front of the Paramount mountain......comedy gold
@bemasaberwyn55 I totally missed the Paramount mountain till someone pointed it out on FB 😂
@@renrants I missed it on the first watch but I definitely caught it on my second watch
"It's like mind control!" Boimler says, while sitting under a picture that looks like the Paramount logo and watching a CBS logo-shaped screen.
So good 😅
1:58 Word. It's made me rethink all my theories.
It's definitely an intriguing mystery
No one in Starfleet said "Hey, we're gonna go negotiate with Grand Nagus Rom...maybe we should bring along Nog. The first Ferengi in Starfleet, and THE SON OF GRAND NAGUS ROM."
Rom would have immediately noticed his father was playing them, and possibly also why. It's possible Rom wouldn't have even wanted Nog there for this reason.
Oh that's interesting! They should have at least name dropped him though 😅
this maybe my new favorite Star Trek series
It's definitely up there for me, I love it a lot 😅
same here it's more fun to watch then Picard@@renrants
the humor to this show definitely has some Rick and Morty vibes but does have light hearted and fun
I think it avoids being as mean spirited as Rick and Morty can be 😅
Good point@@renrants
I think I probably laughed harder at this than any this season. I'm a real sucker for anything Tendi, and Tendi+Rutherford is my favorite relationship in the show, so I got a lot out of it overall. This Mystery Ship Blows Up Another Vessel cold open was less annoying than it's been getting, so that's nice, but I still don't really care for them that much after like, the second time.
I'm hoping the story they do for the mystery ship is enough pay off to make it worth it!
@@renrantsThat’s the problem with “mystery box” storylines…the payoff never really feels worthy of the build-up…
It’s perhaps the only real let-down for me so far though as we’re getting some of the best LD episodes of the show so far! History literally got made here, that’s amazing in itself! 😅
It’s just that I have seen LD do a much better antagonist season arc with Season Two’s “Pakled Threat” storyline. Instead of a mystery box, we knew who our antagonist was right from the finale of Season One, “No Small Parts”. The arc therefore had time to then explore the nature of this suddenly aggressive turn of the normally more passive Pakled and the Cerritos’ attempts to quell the threat. The arc even establishes a bit of fall-out from the Dominion War as that turns out to be the most likely source for all of the various ship parts that the Pakled then acquired to make the absolutely MASSIVE clump ships that are now capable of aggressively overpowering and tearing apart ships for their ship parts and then even introduces our oft-mentioned Klingon ship as it’s shown to be supplying the Pakled with additional resources and influencing the Pakled to take more aggressive tactics overall! 😲
For me, I’m just enjoying these awesome episodes, the arc’s already losing it for me…😢
3:55 this is relatable and it hurts
Edit: Mystery ship could be the Iconians?
Oh wow that's an interesting idea!
No T'Lyn this episode, but for once I think she would have been superfluous.
Yeah, I sort of wish she was with the gang, but they just wouldn't have time to do another little subplot justice 😭
@@renrants Unresolved issues for T'Lyn:
1. Bendii syndrome or misdiagnosis
2. Multitasking while meditating (a big Vulcan no-no)
3. Emotional support for Mariner via psychic abilities
4. Mariner validates T'Lyn without judgement; seed planted for intimate relationship possibly
T'Lyn is a complex character. With all that on the table any one of those issues could be a plot or sub-plot for an entire episode.
She's such a great addition to the crew, there's so much potential in her writing.
I do kind of ship her and Mariner 😂
@@renrants T'Lyn and Mariner make a good couple...♥️
10:09 A propos of nothing, I hope they saved those clothes.
Seriously 😅
4:06 Yeaaaaaahhhh... they played with you, didn't they. 😆
They absolutely did 😅
@@renrants Likewise. But I can't say I mind too much. Especially as long as it's funny.
Thanks
Thank you so much for your support 😭🥺❤️
it was really nice to hear Max Grodenchik again but I feel like his performance was a little bit off? They should've made him wear the Rom teeth, his voice sounded too clear. Maybe it's the animation though, he had such strange, specific mannerisms and facial performance that just can't be captured in the Lower Decks artstyle
Yeah, I can see that. I think he mostly had the voice down, but there was definitely a bit of a loss with the transition to an animated character
I adore the ship between Rom and Leeta there cute together
They're so sweet and their courtship was so incredibly cute 😭😭
It's interesting that The Probe or whatever we want to call it was willing to cut a deal with some random Ferengi crew member, even if it turned around and double-crossed them. In a way it significantly reduces how threatening it feels, but it also heavily calls into question any theories I had so far. I've been betting on Badgey of Borg (the general shape, the way it 'stands up' to fire) but that doesn't feel authentic to Badgey or Borg. Also I was so far betting on a Section 31 save and William Bradford reveal for the season finale (darkly mirroring the Captain Bucephelus Dagger reveal. The show really likes season finale callbacks, IE: It's the Titan! already a callback to It's the Enterprise! then becomes It's the Cerritos! the next season), leading to some backsliding from Boimler next season( as in 'if William can be captain of a ship in section 31 why am I still a failure?'). I think next season (or end of this) Mariner resolves her real problem and discovers she wants to be a first officer like Ransom and help build people up, and next seasons finale has Boimler in temporary/emergency command with Mariner as his first officer. Also, yes, I don't want to disparage the view of anyone who thinks Tendi and Rutherford are platonic besties (they are...for now) but there is obviously chemistry there and while it isn't a forefront issue for either of them, I think they both have the capacity to be into it. Rutherford has been shown to be inclined to date romantically. Tendi we don't have any direct evidence for, but she seems like she understands it and is capable of it, if anything she was just over-exposed as the Mistress of the Winter Constellation and possibly has some issues because of it. Love the good little green bean but honestly it'd be kind of nice if she had some actual issues because of her repressing other than just being overly enthusiastic about making friends.
Oh! BUT. The scene with the death ship did add a 2nd layer this week. Where last week it felt like the disintegration effect was meant to put a nail in the idea that the ship was capturing the people, this week the crews scream seemed to extend well into/through the disintegration effect.
Interesting theories! I'd love to see Boims in command 😅
@@LowbrowDeluxe Until we are given the canon name I'm calling it the "USS Scroll Mouse" because that's exactly what it looks like. I wouldn't be surprised if the design was inspired by one. Kind of like how Geordi's visor was just a gold-plated hair band.
Sorry I disappeared during the premiere. Stupid Real Work!
No worries! ❤️
Just going to say it. I ship Tendi with Boimler. I think they're a much more funtional couple -- and much cuter too. Go team Boindi, GO!
Rutherford & Tendi work better as BSFF (Best Science Friends Forever).
That's interesting! I haven't really thought of them as a pairing, I can kind of see it now that you mention them though :)
@@renrants I'm glad to read you say that 🖖
Eh. Agree to disagree.
I still ship him a bit more with Mariner, although now I really ship her and T'Lyn 😅
@@renrants Mariner & T'Lyn? Oh yes, I can get abored that ship. It kinda gives me Kirk/Spok slash fic vibes. Lol
this is a Cute and Funny episode
So many sweet moments
I ship Tendiford...but I think the big bad this season is a combo of Badgey, Peanut Hamper and Agimus. We will know, sigh, in a few weeks
Oh that would be interesting!
I think we need a total of five artificial megalomaniacs in containment before the inevitable breakout episode.
I have to look up Leeta because I don’t remember her
She's Rom's wife 🥺
And former Dabo girl / Quark's employee.
Classic American Capitalist .
Not sure what that's supposed to mean, I'm literally not even American 😅
So both Quimp and Vasseriy(the admiral) are characters that appeared a couple of times through season 1. Quimp was the Ferengi that Mariner talk into harassing her and Boimler when they were on Talgana IV. And the Admiral is the purveyor of the sense oar joke from season 1( yes we have all been making fawn of the Admiral since then and then he appeared in the first crisis point). Why am I blame work because I would totally lock myself in a room watching 8 hours of Ferengi TV. How tf did the animators make D'Vana CUTER by making her and Rutherford blush? You know I think that you could owe Freeman's Acumen with the Ferengi to her having to deal with his brother last season when they were circling the tacky fascist cardassian eyesore. Btw there were definitely parts of this episode that had me wheezing
Good catch! I kind of thought we'd seen Quimp before, but I haven't done a full rewatch before this season 😅
@@renrants I've done like four re-watches of this entire series that's the most recent of which being right after those old scientists aired because of course I did
@@bemasaberwyn55 Tendi's cutest moment was when she almost stumbled because she had never worn high heels before. Such a slice-of-life thing to happen.

Omg I missed that too, so cute
ROMance hehehe
Love a good pun 😅
I love your commentary,Ren. Keep it up
Thank you! That means a lot to me! ❤️
It took me multiple rewatches of thinking, but Rom and Quark's family as a whole are very good at navigating politics and/or negotiating. Rom proved he was/became good at it this episode imo
Rom was always underestimated in DS9 and proved time and time again he was smarter than they gave him credit for, it's so nice seeing his role as Nagus a bit kroe realized for sure though :)
