      I got uterine cancer 6 months ago and asked oncologist about diet. Oncologist told me to lose weight by eating less of everything and follow the government's healthy eating guidelines. Imagine my surprise while researching to find out that advice is not optimal!!! I need to eat high vegetable, no added fats, minimally processed, vegan diet with added herbs, spices. Sigh, we need better education for patients and doctors in regards to nutrition. Thankfully Dr. Greger and others like him are trying.

So is it more important to eat cruciferous vegetables and not worry about the fact I'm getting 35% of calories from fat? I'm confused. I mean, you can eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables and a lot of fat as well. It doesn't seem like Dr. Greger mentioned studies that pointed to a combination of the veg along with a low fat diet at the same time, did he?

    Doc do you think it’s the sulforaphane in the broccoli that helps fight cancer?

    • @bryant475
      @bryant475 Před 3 lety +6

      Not sure if Dr. G saw this, but I'm a future doc, nutritional biochemistry researcher and holistic health coach. Dr. G is one of my role models! I spend several hours a week digging into the research behind food as medicine, and what I've learned over the years is absolutely mind blowing. Indeed! Sulforaphane (SFN) is the all star Isothiocyanate (ITC) in Crucifers, and it exhibits several anti cancer mechanisms. For instance, it causes cancer cells to self-destruct, a process known as apoptosis. Research has shown that Sulforaphane blocks DNA methylation and controls certain processes in cell cycle progression, that would otherwise contribute to the development of cancer. In more detail: SFN inhibits carcinogenesis and metastases through various mechanisms, including the activation of tumor suppressor genes, activation of caspase-3, induction of cell cycle arrest, reduction of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) levels, and inhibition of DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) [29-32] www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5843244/.
      There are other mechanisms, but these are some of the main ones. Here's the beauty of it though- there are also other amazing ITCs and other medicinal phytonutrients in Broccoli (and more in the sprouts of course), and the other cruciferous veggies (and plant foods in general), so the more variety of plant foods we eat, the better!
      BTW, check out Dr. G's video on Myrosinase and Sulforaphane if you haven't already, it's fascinating and shows some strategies to activate SFN czcams.com/video/wsN8x0BWcyE/video.html
      Dr. Rhonda Patrick also does a lot of research on this, and SFN is one of her favorite compounds.
      All of this is just a small slice of the world of Nutritional biochemistry, Nutrigenomics and Epigenetics which are the big 3 science fields (and big fascinations of mine), that prove Food as Medicine, and the main way that we will take down Big Pharma/Medical establishment!

If too many side effects, stop and start B2, B3 (nutritional yeast) + selenium ca. 2 Brazil nuts a day. For about two weeks then start low and slow iodine again (algae) and try to increase. Been vegan for 10 yrs and rather healthy. My healthiest and strongest this year! But now I’m battling this crap. Sigh
