      I've never really understood why men worry so much about balding. I mean, yes, at 16 it would be scary, but I mean overall. Women understand that many men are going to be in some stage of balding, and I've often found bald or baldING men very attractive.

      @@annehedonia156 well, I guess it's different from their perspective. The genetic angle is indeed complicated. My paternal side everyone has a full head of dark thick hair, and when my Dad died at age 78 we buried him with a beautiful head of barely salt and pepper hair. It was thinner than his younger days but no balding. My mother's hair is an opposite story, she had thin and fine hair and was turning grey in her 30's. There are 5 of us siblings. I am the oldest. Three of my sisters are practically bald,; my brother is bald. All four of them are grey now (we are all boomers), but I just have a fine streak of grey along my forehead. The rest of it is still a dark brown. My hair is fine but I used to have a lot of it but in recent years I have gone through periods of shedding. I have been on Minoxidil for several years and that has pretty much put a stop to it. Apparently I was the only one to get anything close to my father's genes, my 4 siblings and my daughter inherited my mother's hair genes. Go figure.

    Wrestler Shawn Michaels had this type of balding for years. It wasn't quite as diffuse, however. He used his strong forelock hair to slick it back into a ponytail and held it together with a rubber band. It wasn't until the last 5 years that it got noticeable to the point where he shaved it off entirely. There are definitely ways around it if you still have a strong hairline. IMO he'd be a good candidate for SMP if he doesn't want to go too invasive.

    I am interested in what type of therapies are available to older, post menopausal woman who have had PCOS. I struggled with PCOS, and now have male-pattern baldness and I'm 57. In my teens my hair was lush and dark, wavy brown. Now it's thin, rather stringy gray, and retains little wave. Unfortunately I'm also relatively poor, widowed three years ago, on disability and I doubt Medicare thinks a hair transplant is medically necessary! Thank you! I am watching your videos after seeing your reaction to a Doctor Mike video. Glad to have found you!!

    Your channel is great. I have always been paranoid about my hair and like that my head looks ok when shaved. You look great Dr. Greg. I have had a small spot at my part my whole life and always paranoid it would grow. If anything at all has happened in 30 years, besides turning much white, it has been from me poking and prodding the spot. When they cut a fade it is not visible at all but when I grow out my hair it is just a divot in my hairline I have had my whole life.. I certainly recommend medical intervention for friends. Mexicans are less subject? My dad is like a Norwood 3 at 70, but I feel he has been there since his 20s. Such a weird mixed bag in the roulette wheel of hair genes.

    My brother’s hair went white by his mid-twenties. He tried dying it and he just looked ridiculous because he’d have to keep getting his roots done so he stopped. 30 years later he’s still got a full head of hair as do I but I’m rapidly catching up with him in the silver department.

      my husband’s the same! He started going grey in middle school and now at age 35 he’s entirely silver. He dyed it when we first met but eventually felt like it was a waste of time and money (not to mention it damaged his already-crappy hair) and now I think he looks great! No hints of hair loss yet but the silver hair is definitely a talking point (he’s Japanese/we’re in Japan and sometimes he gets crap from people who think he’s dyed it silver on purpose lol)

    I shaved my head because I wanted to (no medical reasons). I didn’t do it for aesthetics either. I didn’t find myself beautiful in the mirror afterwards but it was fun to experience. It was so strange to really FEEL the water on my skull, I was used to have my thick hair cover it. I recommend the experience to anyone that doesn’t have a problem with being less attractive for a while. I think I may be privileged though because most of my friends told me I had a beautiful skull shape and that it wasn’t weird or anything. Maybe if I had an alien head it might’ve been less funny to do.

      I shaved my head with clippers(no guard)at 18 because I was stoned, bored and rewatching breaking bad. I really liked the look and shaved my head the whole summer, because it kept my head cool when i went to the pool and I really liked the look. When I started college I started growing my hair long, and at 20 I noticed it had diffused a bit. I freaked out and went to a barber to cut my long locks off into my old hairstyle from highschool and it looked great. I grew it long again and it's bascically the same unnoticeable lightly diffused hair I had at 20. Because I know how I look with a shaved head and beard, and like it I know I will probably shave it if it gets too bad. But I really like having long hair, so I'm gonna roll with that for as long as I can.

    The nice shave thing is real! Having a symmetrical, smooth-looking skull can be attractive as all hell.
    I know from experience because my husband, growing up, always had a pretty large forehead with a high hairline and a pretty small chin, when I met him he had been balding for a few years and decided to shave all his hair off and grow a beard, which is quite full nowadays. That's why looking at his old photos is always jarring to me, because the ratios of his face were all off and I think he looks so much better now.

I lost more than half my head and was worried the baldness front and back of my head would meet in middle. I literally was on every antibiotic and had steroid ointments but they only thing that made it grow back was actually regularly scraping the bald patches and encourage the skin, freshen the follicles they came back with thin grey hairs, i protected with my life until they became brown and fuller again.

    Can you make a video about post finansterid syndrome? Or what are your experiences/thoughts about that topic?

  • @olive4989
    @olive4989 Před rokem +26

    I'm not sure finasteride would be appropriate for a 16y/o male with androgenic alopecia because their body may not have finished developing by that point. While finasteride may slow or prevent the progression of hair loss in these patients, it could restrict further growth in height. This is because in preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it causes an increase in free testosterone in the body. Although testosterone has a reduced androgenic effect (is less potent) compared to DHT in hair and skin, the testosterone increase can cause an increase in estrogen, as testosterone can be converted into estrogen. While this estrogen increase is negligible in most developed adults, it may prevent younger patients from reaching their height potential. This is because the growth plate in the long bones is regulated by the cumulative estrogen concentration, whereby when a threshold concentration is exceeded, the growth plate will begin to close. This is why women (on average) tend to be shorter than men, as women ordinarily have much higher serum estrogen concentrations compared to men. Just something for younger people starting finasteride to bear in mind :)

      Will it prevent facial hair development in younger men aswell?

    • @olive4989
      @olive4989 Před rokem +1

      @@peyton.simpson Yes, it can prevent facial and body hair from developing further/ slow facial and body hair development, although if you were to stop finasteride the facial and body hair would continue to develop as normal, but so would the hair loss that you were trying to prevent. Unfortunately this is not the case for height, so if finasteride was to cause the growth plate to fuse prematurely then stopping the medication would not reverse this. Once the growth plates fuse, you cannot grow taller

As a man whose shaved his head since middle school with brief periods of growing it out just fine when younger, and now both balding and loving being bald I’d love to have it all be gone. Only if there’s minimal scalp scarring though. Shower-shaving isn’t that inconvenient, just hate when it’s growing out at all. Nice upload, always a joy
