Doesn't seem so many when one considers that a typical Tesla uses around 4500 type 2170 batteries, or 900 type 4680 batteries. That's only enough for around 55K Teslas.

4680 batteries are hardly impressive, just an incremental improvement over the long time in production 2170 batteries. The reason the 4680 batteries have 5 times more capacity than 2170 batteries is that they are about 5 times bigger in size. That's right, for the same weight and space as 5 - 2170 batteries, you can replace them with a 4680 battery. There is a fairly small improvement in energy density, on the order of 10% or so. 500%??? That's a completely misleading marketing claim.
Further, Tesla has been trying to get these 4680 batteries into large scale production for nearly 4 years but couldn't get their production speed and yield up to acceptable levels. So finally, they may have arrived. Unfortunately, there are now multiple competitors that are more energy dense and have better charging properties than the previous generation of batteries like the 2170 (and 4680).

No it’s not. I was quoted 18k for new batteries from Tesla. I got an aftermarket replacement exactly the same for 8k. If it’s all insourced then no more cheaper alternatives.
