    [SONY XPERIA 1 IV HANDS-ON]
It just doesn’t seem fair. You shouldn’t get plaudits from reviewers year after year saying you’re "one of the most-improved phone brands" … without eventually becoming an easily-recommendable phone brand. But when it comes to smartphones, Sony is the opposite of easy. I’m Michael Fisher and this is a very early preview of the Sony Xperia 1 IV.
    [ABOUT MRMOBILE’S SONY XPERIA 1 IV HANDS-ON]
MrMobile’s Sony Xperia 1 IV Hands-On was produced following two weeks with a Sony Xperia 1 IV review sample provided by Sony. Pre-production prototype running pre-release software.
MrMobile does not accept compensation from the manufacturers of the products he reviews in exchange for producing content. No payment was provided and Sony was not afforded a preview, editorial input or copy approval rights concerning this review. The lone sponsor of this video is BetterHelp.

It's definitely not for everyone, but Sony has to be lauded for continuing to offer an intriguing alternative to the normal trends in smartphone world. You have to be brave to commit to your vision for this long given how well the conformists (Xiaomi, Samsung bar foldables) are doing.

I'd argue phones that are designed for everyone are some of themworst ones because they only appeal to the lowest common denominator. There's no "that's the one for me" phone anymore, and that's why I'm happy to shell out two grand for this and ditch my iPhone Boring Pro Max

@Paul I wouldn't call a phone that can drive some serious headphones and brings together the best of Sony's tech lacking in quality. They just don't care about the box or updating it. And honestly the kind of person who buys a Xperia One isn't going to care about keeping the phone longer than two years anyway, so why bother offering more support that costs money to be routed elsewhere

It does heat up but not so that it shuts itself off, but my scenario is B-roll, a little of selfie mode talk, stills on the go. The 120fps on all three cameras was the selling point that hit my string. I bought the Xperia 5 II my backup camera for inteviews and other client work, and with good lighting, nobody noticed it wasn't a footage from my A6400 for ex. I bought a 115 usd phone , 3.5 years back called the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 with a crappy camera but otherwise great hardware for it's price. SD636, 5000mah battery complete stock android.
Opened the box, immediately unlocked the bootloader, flashed camera2api, installed Gcam mod.
Still using it, I uninstalled the main stock camera itself. It could take photos that even the iPhone of it's time couldn't take.

For me, it's a shame that such amazing hardware is wasted by the lackluster software update schedule. Sony doesn't promise or deliver updates like Samsung, a company that's taking aim at Google despite having way more devices to keep track of. For the price, the 1 IV should have at least 3 OS upgrades and 4 years of monthly OTA security patches. Samsung is doing more with 4 OS upgrades and 5 years of security patches, but the former would be reasonable.
As a fan of Samsung's One UI, I would have loved to see "Good Lock" style customizations on Sony's phones since they really help power users make the device their own. I love having a grid-style recent apps menu (instead of the one-at-a-time layout), automated routines for apps, using the power button for a flashlight toggle, AMOLED black theming throughout the OS, etc. Samsung makes this all possible without a custom ROM.

I think what bothers me about Sony is that they weren't always like this. I've personally owned an Xperia L1, L2, and XA1. Sure, the L1 and L2 weren't powerful by any stretch with their Mediatek 6737T CPUs, but they managed to pack that premium feel into a budget handset regardless. They included Sony's exclusive apps for the time, they had cameras with plenty of manual mode goodness (though the auto modes were terrible compared to other phones, as you alluded to in your video), and holding one in the hand felt like a fashion accessory. The XA1 was a bit more powerful, had that dedicated shutter button, and felt even more aesthetically pleasing. Then Sony stopped shipping their budget phones in the US when they moved to the 1, 5, and 10 series (with the 10 series replacing the XA series). The price shot up drastically, and suddenly it was no longer worth it for me.

Shame about the poor camera software implementation for auto mode. The mobile SOC comes with top notch processors which include AI engines. Sony is not taking good advantage of the processors available with Qualcomm Snapdragon to give us a camera auto mode worth the asking price of the phone. I'm happy that Sony kept a lot of the great features that made me choose the Xperia 1 series in the first place! I currently use an Xperia 1ii and could very well upgrade! I do hope they fix the camera features before launch or with Android system updates.
That adaptor for using Sony camera wired remotes with the Photography Pro app is something I'd like to get, as I had been eyeing a third-party 'FOTGA' remote to use when my phone is in an overhead camera rig while I take photos of books for my research into book design.
(6:31) Book title pun, like I had been imagining doing as part of a secret project I'm still working on!

Mr. Mobile: what wireless microphones do you use? Can you please provide a link? Thanks.

I would absolutely love to see a revist! I review phones as well, and the times I don't have or don't want to lug my sony alpha A7RIII I'd love to have a sony phone to snag video with, assuming it improves.
As of right now, I'm using an iPhone 13 pro max for that purpose.

Just ordered an Xperia 1 Mark IV (white Version) from Sony Europe BV. Delivery is scheduled for June 16th. This also fits with the previous release periods.

You hit the nail on the head. If Sony can have a good "regular" camera, I'd have bought one already. I love using the pro camera and video on my Samsung when making "cinematic" videos, but 90% of the time I use the regular cameras to get that quick shot of whatever.

I remember picking one up at Best Buy a few years ago. Not even sure what model it was. A quality phone that I could not afford or justify at the time but I do remember it being different from the others around the display. I agree that they should be available in more markets and on a broader stage.

What Mr. Mobile said, would be nice to have good automatic shots too. I don't want to have to mess with camera settings every time I want to take a shot.

My problem with the manual first philosophy on a phone is very simple.
If you care about manual first shooting, you will get a cheaper DSLR and a cheapish phone.
That will give you unmatched quality compared to a phone.
If you already have a DSLR(or a mirrorless), then you probably will use your phone for casual shots. You arent gonna take quick selfies with friends with your DSLR, nor will you want to spend time setting up the shot or even just the settings.
You wanna click the button and have a pretty picture.
Thats what phones are good for, they are the replacement of the point and shoot, and thats what they do best, point and shoot.
Could i set up a prettier picture with my Xperia 5 II than my bf's iphone 12 mini, yes. However, i have a dslr as well. And when i just want to take a pic of my cat sleeping, it always goes out looking better on the iphone.
Phone cameras should be about simplicity. A phone can never try to compete with a proper camera(on quality given time to set up the shot and all the settings), and the thing is, as soon as they try to, it ruins the ease of use of the camera. Which ruins it for most people, in most use cases(quick shots)

The Xperia Z3 was my first and only Sony phone, got it when we Switched to T-Mobile. I'd love to get another one, but I can in no way justify paying for one of these especially when I don't keep my phones all that long.

My 83 year old grandpa here in Japan still caries an original Z1. He takes such pride in the fact his phone is from Japan, so my wife and I might pick this up for him for Christmas.
