  • TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy Pixel 7 Pro vs XPERIA 1 IV! Sony vs Google! Not the "best" phones of the year. Certainly not the most popular phones of the year.
I believe Google and Sony have made the most distinctly different phones from each other, and these phones are the "bookends" of the Premium Android market.
I don't know that two phones could be more different from each other, and that's enough for me to shoot a showdown!

The headphone jack is essential for me. I regularly have the phone mounted on the dashboard of my car and through aux i get much clearer radio, easier with phonecalls (essentially hands-free) and much easier to listen to music or podcasts, and I don't have to jerryrig some barely working Bluetooth reciever.

Chose the Pixel 7 Pro reluctantly... I say reluctantly, it's an incredible phone but i wanted the headphone jack, better battery and narrower single handed display. Above all else however I value longevity and something this review doesn't mention os Sony's software support (or lack of). It appears 2 upgrades is all you get and at the end of the day I reckon its unfair to spend THAT MUCH on the Sony only to be tossed out (software wise) after a couple iterations. Pixel will provide years of support which wins the day for me.

JCB, as a Sony fan getting the Xperia 1 IV is a no-brainer for me but after having the Xperia 1 and Xperia 1 II, I'm really, really disappointed at the software support. Two years just isn't feasible anymore especially when everyone else is miles ahead as it pertains to 3-5yrs of software updates and at least 3 years of security updates. Warning, Rant:
How about a replaceable battery, while you're wishing? And I don't really know what fool thought curved screens were a great idea.
I want a versatile device that's made to last.
You talk about a limited audience - but for a content -consumer- that likes things on phone versus in cloud...my wife wants a Sony just for the SD, jack, and a reasonably protectable device that will let her play a game or two and switch tasks capably.
I simply do not know why a piece of tech this complex, this expensive to produce, can't last five years for those that don't mind missing out on some current bells and whistles.
I still miss whatever thinking was behind the Note 4. We used those for as long as we possibly could. They lasted well. They worked well. They were worth the stinking money. I loved my headphone jack and a huge SD full of uncompressed music. I loved swapping in a fresh battery that was charging on an external charger. You can't even swap in batteries on a freaking ThinkPad anymore.
Waterproof? Who cares if it's made of glass? Front and back? How many times have you just dropped one versus dropped it in the toilet? Swimming pool? Buy a case.
My only criticism of this review is that you complimented how light it was. If they'd made it a little wider, a little heavier, maybe made the back plate a good heat conductor - bye bye heat problems. Light and thin is not the be all and end all of a mobile computing device for a power user. Versatility, reliability, ruggedness, repairability, backwards compatibility as well as forward....
It seems like these devices that can do so much of what a computer can, and so much of what a still camera can, and a movie camera - and are still trying to be our main communication device? And entertainment center? It's no wonder companies practically seem to panic about next year's model constantly and never mind about longevity. (Yeah, and they want you to keep buying as well, ofc.)
Plus, there's average consumer that wants to be able to use all this without thinking too hard. There goes granular controls over your hardware.
I miss things like my old Hasselblad. It seems like "buy quality" is not meant for electronics. (I drive a 4Runner.)

@@Lollllllz Appreciate your comment and at least skimming mine. I should never rant when irritated picking tech, especially.
I enjoyed huge ZeroLemon batteries at times or simply whatever seemed the most reliable for my Note 4 for general use if smaller was useful (mostly for a great case). Sure, it often confused the built in battery meter, but there were decent apps that tracked battery switches decently. Oh well.
It's concerns like a two year update policy plus concerns about repairability and, yes, that includes battery replacement, that make me hesitate a little getting an expensive niche tool like the Sony. (Sony is niche?) Well, more niche than a Pixel or Samsung.
I also wish, according to other reviews, that the camera and sensor were a bit sharper compared to another of Sony's own products.
I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one regardless - and I'm suggesting my wife get the Pixel.

In terms of power and features, the clear winner is the Sony 1 Mark IV. It is a high-tech product from a company known for exceptional quality, and this is reflected in its higher price point compared to the Google Pixel 7 Pro (which is 2 times cheaper). I sold my iPhone 13 Pro Max and bought a Sony 1 Mark IV. And I'm happy I did it. SONY is a really badass phone with high-tech and professional features and can be used as a professional tool for creators. Actually, this is the creator's phone. I just don't imagine myself now without that phone, it's a fucking treasure. I started to analyze then how good the video shooting is and I felt overwhelmed, the video was fantastic, Sony phone shoots even better than my DSLR camera. Bloody hell! Pixel is heavier, larger, more slippery, worse battery life. On the plus side, it has much better telephoto, better basic camera, much longer software support, faster security updates, and more third party ROMs. Sony has better shape, size, battery life, HS power control, SD card, headphone jack. FYI, US model IVs (1 and 5) can't be bootloader unlocked (first Sony that's been that way in a long time, I believe) while the international model lacks 5G band n71, which is one of the many bands Tmobile uses.

    Biggest sensor for tele lens
    2nd Biggest for Wide lens
    3rd Biggest for Ultrawide
My reasoning is for better Portrait quality and perhaps better bokeh simulations since the tele lens will distort less especially on faces than wide angle and the benefit of larger sensor to make shallower depth of field.
The aperture might be lower for the largest sensor, but the lowlight capability of the sensor should be able handle it, and the ultrawide can benefit from night photo algorithm to capture brighter images.

Juan made just that recently for his Xperia 1 Mk5 video. Definitely worth watching.

I wish we could get Sony's dual front firing speakers on more devices.

I bought an open box Xperia 1 IV for $900 and being a huge LG V60 fan I really enjoyed the phone. Took some nice pix with it in the manual modes and using some of the built-in filters. Also loved having a physical fingerprint reader that was super fast. That being said I decided to return it and wait for the 1 V to come out in a few months. There were a few hiccups in the IV which although I could overlook I'm hoping gets ironed out in the V (eg, random restarts, especially after using Android Auto). Looking towards the 1 V.
BTW, the headphone jack was great to have back although I thought LG's sounded better. RIP Quad DAC.

The Xperia is a reminder of what sensical times were. Headphone jack, sd card, 4k display, awesome telephoto technology. Everyone else circle jerks "progress"

Techies keep talking about those "average" folks, but by and large I see people on inexpensive phones doing a LOT more with them than techies do on premium hardware...

I owned the Sony for a while and it was an amazing phone. If they add macro on the future Sony V, it'd be my perfect phone.

So true, no such thing as the best phone, it's the same as fashion, no such thing as the best shoes
