  • Today we'll be taking a look at the PSO Scope in all its glory, as it's one of the earliest scopes that new players get access to via Prapor. It's a wonderful starter scope of actually decent quality, however for beginners the markings can be a bit of a mystery.
    We will be focussing on using the inbuilt rangefinding to estimate enemy distances in your raids, as well as checking out the differences between the three versions, the PSO 1, PSO 1M2 and PSO 1M2-1.

    What's your favourite weapon to run the PSO on?

    • @DarthCovah
      @DarthCovah Před 3 lety +11

      AK-74M with a PSO and BT rounds is my typical go-to. Full-auto compensates for the lack of sights for close-range (especially with a laser - or you can use a canted red dot, or just remove the PSO if you expect a close-range fight), and for longer ranges, the AK-74M has one of the better accuracy ratings (under 2 MOA). BT rounds are tracers, so you can actually see their impact point, which is very useful for longer-range engagements - just don't fire too often, or your position will be revealed. Great video, Gigabeef!

    The PSO-1 scope is by far my favorite scope both in games, and in actual life. The history behind it, is fascinating, and the tech it showed in its time was phenomenal. It showed us what the USSR was capable of when they weren't busy trying to build a bigger nuke, instead of spending its money on better things.. like food for its people.
    It was even fully capable of night combat with an IR lens... all in that little scope.. while the US version weighed 10 pounds, was the size of a tennis racket, required you to have a damn battery on your back, and if it got wet, you'd be fried worse than the flamethrower guy in WW2.

    5:05 Well, guess what, this reticle is also used for commercial 7.62×39-adapterd versions of PSO.
    5:20 For anyone interested, IRL PSO-1 is set up to work with both LPS and 7N1, while PSO-1M2-1 is for 9×39 mm rounds, namely SP-5 and SP-6.
    7:02 Those all, as well as later ones, are really useful and often ignored wisdoms of firefight.
    Also, I like your ambush and flanking play, definitely skillful and well-thought through.

    • @Gigabeef
      @Gigabeef  Před 3 lety +1

      The slightly smaller rangefinder for the 1m2-1 works quite nicely in tarkov given the lack of long ranged engagements, 400m is plenty!

    • @F1ghteR41
      @F1ghteR41 Před 3 lety

      @@Gigabeef I forgot to mention as well - and that info is somewhat esoteric - that IRL with PS and PP rounds AK-74N/M works just like an SVD with regards to PSO zeroing up to at least 200 m mark. BP should theoretically correspond even at longer distances due to its higher ballistic coefficient. In fact, one article suggested using an AK-74M with PSO and BP rounds as an urban DMR instead of SVD, which - given Tarkov's general terrain - might be an interesting suggestion to test in game.

    • @Gigabeef
      @Gigabeef  Před 3 lety

      Why specifically BP? I have done this before super early wipe using T but that was because I had no access to anything better in the first day or two. Shame BP doesn't have better pen in tarkov, then it might be doable!

    • @F1ghteR41
      @F1ghteR41 Před 3 lety

      @@Gigabeef The reason why BP is recommended is because it offers a highly ballistically effective bullet which is also armour-piercing, so it can penetrate some barriers and maintain lethal effect. And yes, it really should have better penetration in game - just like PP. In fact, I have a strong suspicion that penetration and damage values for BP were somehow ascribed to BT and vice versa.

    Tip: If you want to use PSO scope on an AK together with a colimator for close range engagements, just buy a handguard with a rail on top (ex. B-10M) and slap an angled rail from Peacekeeper lvl 2 (MPR45) on it. Now you can mount a compact colimator on it, and it won't be obstructed by PSO! Yey!

    I remember to make a gunsmith training years ago and in one day get an intensive exam of scopes, russian scopes are more practical and cheap, because you can take the distance without aim the objective, like you do in the video. However, "american" - NATO scopes are made for presicion, you got the mili-dots and rads and dont remember what more you got and you need a spotter and click the scope to change the zeroing and calculate the wind and also you have to handle with super care because scope get offended and broke...russian, cheap, unbroken, ugly and deadly. But in Tarkov i just choose a sight, put whatever ammo i got and go to loot.

    The thing about 4x being hard to use at close range is just cause it's zoomed in. If you have point fire / base accuracy skills from CSGO etc you can get the player in your aim and use it up close
    Only issue is tarkov lagging when you aim down scope, if you can aim you can use it like a slightly worse red dot with greater capability than a red dot

    Fun fact(s): the PSO was originally developed for SVD, the 2 different versions we have in game are for the SVD and AK platforms. The one that has range finder up to 400m is the one made for AKs, but the one with ranging to 1000 is for the SVD, and interesting thing is that the 4 chevrons for bullet drop hold over are actually meant for hold overs that are over 1000m away (1000, 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1400 meters).
    The reason I mention this is because you can't use the chevrons for sub 1000 m ranging on the 1000 m PSO version. That said I don't like the absence of the chevrons on the 400 m version so I don't use that one but given the fact you are never gonna shoot something beyond or even at 1000m in Tarkov, the BDCs (chevrons) are useless.

    From my understanding the 400m Simonov reticle was designed to be used with 7.62x39, and it does not appear they have the second and third chevrons beneath the primary chevron on the reticle. Its unfortunate because it is supposed to be a BDC reticle, negating the requirement to dope the scope if zeroed at 100m.

  • @Bad-Seed

    this was fascinating - do the KMZ scopes next!

  • @MrAwsomeshot

    you are a bit incorrect/incomplete on the windage hash marks. They are used to calculate lead on a man at average walking speed (2-5mph) and running speed (7-10mph). They can also be used for range finding.
    The zeroing also needs to be fixed in EFT. PSO scopes are not long range precision scopes but indented for infantry support DMR roles as such should not require DOPE adjustments. The chevrons and the BDC have to be configured based on combination of rifle and cartridge. so an SVD shooting 7n1 will have different POI than the same rifle shooting LPS at long distance using the BDC chevrons.

    Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great czcams.com/users/postUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

    What source did you get that information about for the chevrons? Cause that does not seem correct, most standard is that if you’re zeroed for 100m, 1st down is 200m, 2nd is 300m and 3rd is 400m. Cause I’m real life you can’t just change your zero on the fly like that for most weapons.

      I looked at a load of different sources that all agree across the net, although I think this MIGHT be the case for 762x39 but not 100% sure how it's implemented in EFT. Info is scarce on that, so I didn't include

      Common sense tells you that that is the purpose of them... You see, the PSO-1 is *designed* to be able to adjust its zero on the fly at increments of 100m (50m for the VAL/VSS version). A bullet doesn't drop so much that that distance between aiming points would be applicable for 7.62x54R... You must be thinking of much newer, western optics that do indeed have the system you are describing, like the ACOG, but soviet Russia does things different. The PSO was designed for use with the SVD, 7.62 AKs only got the rail for night vision, the first time russia issued magnified optics for riflemen was after 7.62x39 went out of widespread service

      You're probably thinking of Squad which has unrealistic ballistics.

      I actually have one of these scopes IRL and yes, you can change the zero distance. It has markings out to 1000m on the top turret, after 1km you use the other chevrons, like he says. His information is correct.

    When a scope takes an eleven minute video to explain how to use it.

    ‚biggest problem with scopes and distances in eft is that scopes are by default zeroed for a certan round and you can't get that information, witch is quite a dumb design. take say 5.56 for example and an acog scope. first you as a player need to know that it's a us made and us military used sight witch translates to beeing zeroed for 5.56. now the trouble is what 5.56 round is it accurate for, 855? Fmj? 855a1? you have no idea. most of the time it does not matter until you want to get that 1 tap on a guy 300-500m away on the rock/roof and you end up hitting his torax or missing and the guy runs off and you as a player are expected to know by feel how each round you are using(from many of them in different guns) performs over distance with different scopes------STUPID!

      I agree its a pain, the current system should be the default but we should be able to customise the zero ourselves. By the way, you can find the default round for each weapon on the wiki eg m855 for the m4a1

    Guys you are soo slow! And it wont work for any bullet some bullets are bigger and stronher that means longer distance example: you find him at 200m you use 2nd chevron or zero ot on 200 and you are using m62 or m61 and bullets still dont hit(shoot too high) your target even tho its zeroes at 200. Bcs bullet velocity is different.

      Indeed, is why I mentioned that zeroing is a tricky beast in tarky and would be it's whole own video!
