  • Today we use a Chartplotter to look at the considerations when planning a cross channel trip from Cherbourg to England and making an approach via Portland Bill to Weymouth Harbour.
We look at the information that the chart gives about Portland Bill Lighthouse, the military noise range, Mixen Rock and Weymouth Harbour Bridge.

Update: No Condor high-speed ferries operate from Weymouth now.

So sad, the cross channel ferries made Weymouth the gateway to the UK

@@CoastalSafety yes, it is more than sad. I love your presentation, it's so informative.

Is the Portland Light that flashes differently at different angles a type of Vector Light?
I have seen (on the west side of the Atlantic) vector approach lights that replaced range lights and show different colors depending on the angles. Perhaps you could explain vector lights sometime(?)

Portland Bill LH has various sectors in angles, such that you see 4 flashes when perpendicular to the coast. As your angle to the coast gets less, the number of flashes gets less.
