Night Sail around the infamous Portland Bill | Adjusting to our new life living on a sailboat #2

  • We set sail at night to round the infamous Portland Bill and cross Lyme Bay bound for Dartmouth to have a few weeks holiday after all the boat work and preparations to leave and adjust to our new life as full time cruisers.
We waste no time exploring the stunning town and area and hike some beautiful routes. We go shopping using our new car aka our dinghy, gather wild garlic to make pesto, watch the unique ferries that cross the river whilst sampling local cider at a shoreside pub and continue the hunt for “the stone” and “the pasty”.
Kate also tries to finally learn how to skim stones!

Love the varied presenting style practical knowledge and advice as well as humour and tourist tips. Nice to not hear just a standard CZcams music backing track. Looking forward to binge watching the rest of the series 😁

Thank you…glad you enjoyed it. Choosing music is quite tough sometimes so I’m glad you like that aspect. Enjoy the rest of the season and we’ve just started season 2 when you get to episode 20! Thanks for your comment and support 😎⛵️

You make this look so easy guys 👍 a pleasure to watch and really enjoyed a reminder of how beautiful Dartmouth is x it’s the simple things in life that are the best huh? ⛵️🌱👍 xx

Thank you 😊 It’s easy to make it look easy on film but there are challenges in this lifestyle. Watch out for our future videos to see some of that. Our first visit to Scilly was tough but it’s all totally worth it and, yes, you are so right that it is the simplest things that make it the most special. Thanks for watching 😊😊

We only recently found your channel so will work through your videos. We are liveaboards in Brighton hoping to get going like yourselves, probably too late this year to realistically cross Biscay but we will probably head west in mid September - as you said in your first video, once you leave your home port you’re on your way and officially a cruiser! It’s taken us 4 years to get to this point, so many loose ends to tie up. Just seen your Instagram post regarding a French visa, I think we need to look into that. Good work Iain & Kate, thanks!

Awesome great to hear! There’s lots of our videos ahead of you. There are some highs and lows and a complete change of plan to come but we’re still sailing (as you know from insta). You’re probably right that time is pushing on a bit for you this year but, yes, once you leave that home marina you’ll be on your way. The boat will never be 100% finished (we still have jobs on the list from before we left!) but as long as she’s up and running then get out there and go for it! We’re heading north back towards the U.K. and north Europe next season so might see you somewhere along the way 😊🍺⛵️

Thanks Jim….you’ll see in episode 4 that our U.K. weather is sometimes a bit of a nightmare but you’ll also see in subsequent episodes that we have some beautiful coastline as well 😊 Feel free to drop us a line via Instagram, Facebook or email if you want any pointers for a U.K. visit etc 😎⛵️

Interesting. Wish I could’ve done something like this when I retired in 2000, but health and finances prohibited. Also patrolling London didn’t make me a real sailor. National Coastwatch was as close as I got. See you again soon. Fair winds.

@@FollowIntrepidBear thanks for replying promptly. The Marine Unit must’ve been a blast. What did you drive there? CID was my main ‘deviation’. What was your main job in the unit? Anxiously awaiting more sailing videos.

@@billjones393 hi, indeed it was a blast! We had a 38’ Aquastar launch named “Alarm” with twin 400hp diesels and a 24’ RIB with twin 200hp outboards. Our main job would best be described as anything a panda car does on land has a water based equivalent…boats broken into, stolen, accidents, thefts, speeding and even domestic disputes as well as a kind of neighbourhood policing function for the coast liaising with the various authorities, clubs and water users. Was a brilliant job 😊😊

Please don’t look for “the stone “ as I have it already .It lives in a drawstring bag as it is difficult to look at .
There are still a lot of good stones left to discover though !
