Boosh! A huge wave over our bow! | Setting off to sail around the world | Thrown off our boat! #1

  • Join us, Iain and Kate and Intrepid Bear, a 40ft sailboat as we sail away from long term home marina in Poole in the U.K. to begin our adventure sailing around the world.
    We say goodbye to Poole and begin on our first leg to Portland enjoying some smooth sailing until we hit a tidal race and take a green wave over the bow! We are lifted out in Portland and begin some underwater boat jobs including fitting a feathering propeller.
    As liveaboards we are woken one morning by the marina staff moving our boat as we lay in bed! We then find ourselves told off by the night watchman when he discovers us onboard and have to move off and into bunk beds on Iain’s dad’s fisheries inspection boat moored in the marina.
    We finally relaunch and head out to anchor ready for an early departure across Lyme Bay and are bid an emotional farewell by Iain’s dad on his bagpipes!

      It was an emotional moment and the pipes just heightened that. Anyway Dad will be glad you enjoyed his playing and if you enjoy piping, Iain is also a piper so there might be the occasional bit of piping as we sail the world. Thanks for following along 😊⛵️

    Great episode Iain and Kate. The roast dinner and chicken dish looked fantastic. Can you show us where you store your food. Do you have a fridge freezer. How long can you stay self sufficient at sea for? Do you have to rely on dry foods for any lengthy periods at sea?

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Andy....thanks for your interest. Quite a few questions in one there so let me see what I can do. Can we show you where we store our food? We’ll certainly try and cover that in a future episode although we’re still learning ourselves! (We’ve just filmed a bit of footage relating to a big shopping trip which will probably be ep 3 or 4 so might try and cover a bit of storage there for you 👍🏻) Do we have a fridge freezer? We have a fridge and a freezer, separate units) A normal boat fridge and a small portable freezer....(cont)

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  Před 3 lety +1

      (Cont) how long can we stay self sufficient? Well....we’re still learning that ourselves but so far probably 3 weeks eating reasonably and quite a lot longer just on tinned or dry stuff. We haven’t spent long periods totally away from shops yet so it’s something we’re still learning ourselves. Will try to cover some of it in coming episodes and keep you updated....thanks for following along 😊⛵️

      You’ll not be sorry at that purchase! The 390 and 391 are almost the same except for the transom. Lovely boats. Really solid and seaworthy, we’ve been buddy boating before when the other boat has had a horrible time in the weather where the Najad has just cruised through on autopilot. Maybe we’ll cross paths one day if we return to Northern latitudes. Cheers 😊⛵️

      Really pleased with it so far. They claim power performance should be “almost” as good as a fixed prop but I’d say, on first impressions, it’s better and much more thrust astern. Not cheap but very pleased 👍🏻

      I find that there's no discernable lag between neutral and drive, even on tick over. The only thing has been galvanic corrosion but as you aren't going to be in a marina it should be fine

      @FollowIntrepidBear  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you Russell. Very nice of you to say so. The police never directly trained me in presenting but during my time on the police marine unit, I often had to give presentations to yacht clubs and harbour groups etc and I was trained as a motor boat instructor and taught quite a few people both in and out of the police. I guess that certainly helped. I’m glad you like my style and thanks for letting me know as you never know if you’re getting something right unless people tell you.... cheers 😊

      Thank you so much 😊 Our current plan is to leave the U.K. late July to spend a few months making our way south to our winter berth which may be Gib depending on how their schengen thing works out. Then our only target is to be on Paxos for our 5th Wedding anniversary in June 2022. We sailed a charter boat there to get married in 2017 so it will be poetic to take our own boat in there for our anniversary. And yes it’d be great to meet up with you out there somewhere 😎🍺⛵️

    That was great both. Loved it and I know zip about boats etc. Can you cover what camera(s) you are using one day, and any other kit? I ask as my son is doing a filmaking degree and it's rubbing off on me! What editing software are you using. Your shots are steady, so do you use a gimble? What is your drone? If you're wanting feedback/suggestions I would offer that you might invest in a small directional microphone as it's hard to hear Kate speak over the engines. I've subscribed, but wasn't notified automatically. But I'll keep checking as I'm hooked now! I think what you're doing is fantastic. Bon voyage.

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  Před 3 lety

      Hi Sean. Thank you very much for your kind words. Firstly the notification you need to click the little bell to get auto notified 👍🏻 Camera equipment I will perhaps cover in an episode at some stage but for now I use a GoPro hero 9, a canon EOS600D and an iPhone 11 Pro. The GoPro gets used most and does the stabilisation without a gimbal. I do have a DJI osmo 3 gimbal for the iPhone but haven’t needed it yet. The drone is a DJI Mini 2 but I also have a DJI Phantom 3 which is better for moving boats as it has legs to catch it again! The editing software was Lumafusion on an iPad for the test episode and then I moved to DaVinci Resolve (which is free!) on a powerful gaming laptop. I also have a pixma direction mic and a Rode Lavalier (lapel) mic and the mics feed into a Tashcam DR05X stereo voice recorder. The mics take a bit of setting up and not that easy to use with the GoPro but I do use them in particularly noisy environments. Noted about Kate being drowned by engines. The bit in the boatyard I didn’t intend her to be heard but I can see that could have caused confusion and I will focus on sound as much as I can in future episodes. It is a compromise though as just switching on the GoPro is one button. To record the sound separately requires the mics and recorder and then syncing the voice later but it’s worth doing sometimes and I’ll certainly pay attention to audibility as I can’t stand videos that you can’t hear properly so I don’t want to be one of them! Anyway thanks for the kind words and considered feedback...hope you enjoy the future episodes and cheers for following along 😊😊
