She also has made up her own signs to tell us that she has to go potty or that she needs something (stretching front legs for potty and biting the air *not barking* for follow) she never barks. IT'S NOT TOO LATE! look into counter conditioning and desensitization training.
i got a rescue who was kept in her kennel all the time prior to coming to me. she was over excited around dogs and fearful of people to the point where walks were almost impossible. i got her in to training and after a lot of hard work, she got better. she wasn't perfect but she felt more comfortable. confidence is also important when they have those issues so teaching them nose work would also be extremely beneficial!
exercise is probably most important! find a place that has minimal to no people around and tire your kid out! this can make training easier.

The native Japanese Spitz breeds including the Shiba Inu have very strong wolf-like instincts and behaviours. One of them is not liking eye contact. For dogs/wolves, looking directly into the eye means confrontation, so naturally they tend to avoid eye contact.
This is why it is crucial to start training them as early as possible.

Regarding training a Shiba, you have to be assertive and consistent, and you also have to reward desired behavior rather than punishing bad behavior. The Shiba Inu's mindset is "what's in it for me?", and they won't do something if they don't see any point to it. But they learn extremely quickly when given an incentive.

There's quite a few people who have had success with them. Thing is, even a well-trained Shiba won't always listen, that's just the nature of the breed, and they're not really a breed that will readily and willingly do tricks for you either. But they're among the best problem solvers not only among domestic dogs but among canines in general, and they're extremely loyal.

They are amazing dogs - we have two, with the love and the headaches. That final scene with Jimmy on his back. His two canines are showing, and that means "I love you", or "I love what you are doing." Put ours on their back, rub the belly, or preferably the neck, a canine tooth, usually just one comes out. It's like a snake's fang. Unbelievably intelligent. Once a shibe sets its mind on getting or doing something, it will happen. It might not be immediate, but it will happen. As in, "there is butter on the table, I love butter, I will get butter." Shedding: HORRIBLE. You will get the equivalent of an extra shiba every 3-4 days, every 2-3 in the springtime. Get a good vacuum! We have a dyson, it keeps up, just barely. Absolute loyalty to 1 person. He or she will love every member of its pack, would easily kill for any member were they to be threatened, but loyalty belongs to only one person. Ellie commands me, demands I take her for her afternoon walk, but won't obey my commands the way she obey's my son's. Oh, you forgot the Shiba Scream, well documented on CZcams. Do something the shibe disapproves of, like giving it a bath (they hate water, won't go near it), you will hear a blood curdling scream that sounds like you were slowly twisting the dog's hind leg off and tearing it from it's body. They recover instantly. And finally, they all think they are cats.

Although the things you explained are spot-on, you (and most all-about-Shiba-Inu videos) failed to address a VERY important factor about this breed - that they can EASILY become AGGRESSIVE if you don't exercise and train them properly. These dogs don't nip you - they bite. Hard. Hard enough to draw blood. They mean business when they bite. The native Japanese Spitz breeds are VERY DOMINANT and need a good pack leader to keep them stable. These dogs were not bred to follow commands. They were bred to do as their instincts tell them. I like to describe them as "trainable wolves".
Here in Japan, Shiba Inus are like the Pitbulls of USA. They cause the most serious biting incidents, the most given up by owners, and the most to be euthanised. In every dog shelter and rescue organisation you see lots of Shiba Inus. They are NOT for everyone, especially people who have not done enough research on dog psychology and proper training.

    Our Shiba:
    45 lb male
Went to training during pandemic, not able to socialize due to silly policies
Doesn’t like being leash walked, can chew through a harness in 2 seconds
    Very treat responsive
Looks us in the eye a lot
    Loves to play
Loves to do what he wants to do
If you are looking to dominate a dog, do not get a Shiba
Ours has a fenced yard and loves running around like a mad man
    Very easy to potty train
    Very intelligent
He is food aggressive with other dogs, even though he was raised around another dog from a puppy
He’s now a solo dog as his dog brother passed away at 15 years old
    Loves to Netflix and chill

Very good advice! I have 2 Shiba Inu, they are sisters. Sami (Masami) a Cream and Miko (Miyako) a Black and Tan. My daughter and I spent many hours working with them and took them through 2 obedience classes. We socialized them with other dogs, but they still prefer to just be with each other. We also socialized them with people. I call Sami an attention hog as she will seek attention from anyone. Miko on the other hand is more Shiba like and reserved around strangers. They turned 13 March 1st and they are still active and play with each other. I hope I have many more years with them as they have been the best dogs I have ever had!!

I got my Shiba Inu from a pound in Korea. Unfortunately she wasn’t properly socialized when we got her, and she was already a year old. She is surprisingly obedient to the family, but she still chases and barks at other dogs (especially big dogs; she is really scared of them), and is scared of most other humans... But my family loves her very much, and give her plenty of love every day!

I got a corgi/pitbull mix. She can be a bit too hyper, specially when he’s done playing and wants to be left alone. She is still learning the cues. My shiba inu is currently somewhere in the house while my new pup is cuddling with me. Perfect balance ☯️

It's a very good video about shiba inu. As a two years old shiba owner, I just agree with all of these points. I will just say a shiba have some phases during its first year, especially with socialization. I think he changes his behavior towards other dogs when he is around 10 to 12 months and you have to be very aware of that. It's a critical périod in my point of view. Otherwise, a shiba inu is a very affectionnated dog if you build strong bonds with him. Take him of for walk every day, play with him every day, do not use violence as an educational way. Cheers from France.

Hi Iebourse, welcome and thanks for your in-depth comment. Absolutely like mentioned in the video first year is most critical to built a strong bond with your dog including socialize your Shiba Inu as early as when safe to do so. Although I would say even after the first year it is still important to be patient, firm and consistent when it comes to obedience and behavior training. Appreciate the comment. Cheers from US👋

YES!! there is exactly that!!! - I had no idea this would happen, but managed by pure instinct and some luck to correct my shiba when she did her "teenager" experiment with dog-aggression, and we got it sorted out. A high percentage of other shiba owners over the years in our neighbourhood did not catch that change as their cute puppies grew up, and their dogs are now somewhat to extremely dog-aggressive, which is a shame.
