      I still think sea changes was his masterpiece. I’d been a beck fan for years and loved how you never knew what you were going to get with each new album, but sea changes was shocking in how stripped down but beautiful it was. I was young and pregnant when it came out and that (& QOTSA songs 4 the deaf) were my obsessions during a hellish 3rd trimester.
      I think every album has gems but I feel like Sea Change was nothing but gem after gem. Just a perfect album.

      Kinda of like the more pop [and not near as dark] version of NIN(Trent Reznor; especially during the 'The Fragile' era) - both have managed to cram every sound effect on their computers into their music, but somehow manage to make it intelligible and not at all muddy. That's a real art, not a lot of people can pull off the amount of layering that they do without just making songs that are way too busy and difficult to understand/follow.

    Also; Lex is onto something. Mike Patton did the infamous "sandwich interview" and talked loosely about how the use of sampling and computers would create music that is so far removed from traditional music that it would eventually create entire new forms of non-sample based sound design. Not to mention that bitchin' soundtrack for 'Fight Club'! If they came along just a few decades later, they'd have a lot more mainstream notoriety considering how producers are now "famous" with artist track releases(for some reason, it's kinda weird - why the fuck would I want "DJ KHALED" opening my shit?). But it would actually be legitimate with them boys, lol.

    Beck’s an interesting musician- to say the least. He uses a lot of weird samples in his music. Some of it does approach the territory of just being sound collages, but he definitely makes stuff you can’t help but consider “music.” Listen to his albums Mutations or Sea Change for this, or some of his later songs like “Girl,” and “Think I’m in Love” or “Sexx Laws” and “Mixed Bizness,” which are total funk workouts. Beck can play several instruments and always tours with a full band, so although he does rap a lot and use a lot of samples, he’s a very musical guy. That kind of stuff is just one part of what he does.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens Pƙed 2 lety +3

      I agree, but I also see it a little differently. Beck's the kind of musician who, and I mean this in the best possible way, makes you question what "music" is. He's like a magician; hand him anything, and he'll make it music. The border I see on this song - and I do think it's a great, great song - is between, to the extent that there is a border dividing the two, pop music and high art. Beck challenges your basic perceptions and assumptions, and he did it in a piece that conquered the pop charts in the process. That's just amazing.

    Beck is one of the genius - pure genius - top tier 90's legends who still puts out amazing music (remember Kanye jumping onstage to take the Grammy for Beyonce?) That happened in 2014 and it was Beck he did that too - who was cool a can be about it and just brushed it aside and said he was a huge Kanye fan - cause Beck is OG music iconic legend - jut easy to miss if you are Millenial or younger. More a Gen X act. Despite being prominent and popular tp charting songs like "Loser" you did and this one here, and reaching his fame height from say 1994 to 2004, he kept pumping out amazing albums and won the biggest of all, Grammy Album of the year a full decade after his peak, 20 years from his come up. He has TONS of sick songs. Listen to "Sissyneck" - though I have dozens and dozens - he eases through hip hop, indie rock, folk/blues, and electronica with equal skill and high level results. One of the 90's golden children and a HUGE rabbit hole no one has taken on in the reacting world which is sad and weird honestly. His output, fame, and tunes would suggest he would be a big source for reactions. Maybe you all can give him more shots. Thanks for this one!

    It sounds like the mix is weird in this version where the noise was way up front. The regular version isn't as hard on the ears.

    Lex's comment about 3.5D made me think more about the meaning of the song: It's a throw back to DJ's, starts in the 70's slowly gets taken over by electronics. Just my 2cents ;)

    Beck is that rare thing, an artist who is instantly recognisable but constantly different. You should definitely give the band John Spencer Blues Explosion a listen, especially the song 2 Kindsa Love, I think you'll enjoy it, it has a similar vibe to Beck's stuff. Love the channel guys, thanks

    He does reference Gary Wilson in the song who was very experimental in his music. Beck channeled him with all the electronics in this song.

    Pink Floyd, Beck, NWA, Tribe called Quest, Rancid, Blink 182 all of these are skate bands. Skate is street community, skate is hip hop, is punk, it is homeless, it is outsider. Skate music is always the groove

    In this episode of Brad & Lex, lets take it a bit back to 1996 and where it was. Brad gives the jazz bluesy hip hop infused song what he feels it deserves by signifying his signature "side to side sway" as Lex labels it "strange" and even non musical until certain instruments are added, pretty much giving Beck her "ponder bop" for the whole journey.

    Ayy I just found your page, and I’m loving the reactions so far. I get where Lex is coming from, Beck puts a ton of texture on his music, I get the “sound effect” thinking. It’s way more about a vibe than a song. But his production is some of the best in the business. Please keep it up!

    The different between Floyd and Beck is Floyd was usually trying to tell some kind of story with their music. But Beck is trying to subvert musical conventions and expectations here within the boundaries of popular music at the time. And he's doing it for multiple genres at the same time. So Pink Floyd is thinking along the lines of "what's going to convey the story and emotion we're going for here?" and Beck is probably thinking more along the lines of "what are some popular ideas in music right now and how can I twist them or play with them to challenge them or turn them on their head?"

    Nice! "Passing the dutchie from coast to coast" -- This line in the lyrics is a reference to the 1982 hit "Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth, a cover of the Mighty Diamonds "Pass The Kouchie", with the cannabis reference turned down but so obvious that "pass the dutchie" became slang for passing around the pipe. Spark it up! Both song are great, so check them out when you can.
