There was a period when these guys were known as 'Your favorite band's favorite band.' They were -never- going to be a huge commercial success, and they really didn't care. Even named themselves something that you just couldn't say on TV. Watching news anchors squirm while complaining about 'The BH Surfers' was always good for a laugh. Even better when one of them actually managed to -say- 'butthole' on air. They were an amazing band that did whatever they felt like and ran with it.

This song dominated the summer of 1996. In fact, according to Billboard magazine, it was the #1 Alternative song of 1996, beginning its three-week run at #1 on the Alternative chart on July 6, 1996. It was also one of the Top 100 Mainstream Rock songs of 1996, coming in at #77 on that year-end chart. It never charted on the Hot 100, though, because it was never released as a single for sale, and airplay-only songs did not qualify for the Hot 100 until the end of 1998. Amazingly, however, it did reach the Top 40 on the Hot 100 Airplay (supplemental) chart, peaking at #27 on July 27, 1996. It also barely missed the Top 40 on the Radio & Records CHR Airplay chart, peaking at #42 on August 16, 1996. This means that some brave Top 40 stations gave this song airplay in spite of the band's name.

He is most well known as Mr. Peppermint, a role he played for 30 years as the host of one of the longest-running local children's shows in television, the Dallas-based Mr. Peppermint (1961-1969). The Butthole Surfers have been around since 1981. I bought my first Butthole Surfers record in 1985. This song is from the mid 90s, WAY later in their career. You should start with their first album ‘Pee Pee The Sailor/A Brown Reason To Live’, then go on from there to ‘Psychic … Powerless … Another Man’s Sac’, as well as their EP ‘Cream Corn From The Socket Of Davis’. Other great Butthole Surfers albums are ‘Rembrandt Pussyhorse’, ‘Locust Abortion Technician’, and ‘Hairway To Steven’. They were basically the punk rock Grateful Dead; as they and their fans were heavily into psychedelics. I’ve seen them many times since the 80s, all over the country. They are one of my favorite bands.

I’ve seen this band around 15 times. This is like a kinda like a G rated song of theirs. They have a ton of albums. They were around for a long time. This was their only hit. Some other recommendations are human cannonball, who was in my room last night, anything from the Hairway to Steven album and Anything from Locust Abortion Technician. Basically they were a punk type band but they used to drive around the country and Eat acid every day and set shit on fire. One year they had a stripper with them on tour that used to take her clothes off and she had these metal teeth. I can’t even get started on the videos they played behind them when they played on stage.

The closest song to this (musically) that I can recall from the Butthole Surfers is “The Shame of Life”, though their early material was FAR more bizarre. They started as a kind of psychedelic-noise-punk band, but this song in particular (“Pepper”) marked the beginning of their more generic radio-friendly alternative rock sound.
I STRONGLY recommend “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” or even “Cherub” for a taste of the Buttholes at their most certifiably insane. lol
