Part 27- Revealing Mystery Moulds I found on Gumtree

- This is the series where I reveal what is inside these pottery moulds I found on Gumtree.
The story goes, I found a listing on gumtree for pottery stuff. When I arrived the seller said 'I have all these pottery moulds would you like them as well?' and I said 'why not'. On the way home, I had the brain child to do a social media video series revealing what each mould is.
The mystery is in the fact that I had no idea what I had said yes to, some of the moulds are labelled and easy to tell but some of them are a little more difficult. The beauty is that all of the plaster moulds surprise you no matter the presentation of labels, titles or identifiable surface inside.
So come join me as I dive into this series and share the mould fun. I would love to hear any information you may have on the moulds and to let me know any stories you have that the moulds remind you of in the comments.

I love this guy! I'm from Portland, Oregon as well :) he's actually a sea lion rather than a seal! You can tell because he has visible ears and sits upright on his flippers rather than lying straight out on his tummy. We have two species off the Oregon coast: California sea lions and Steller's sea lions

Came from a tik tok compliation, searched and stayed for you! When I was 7 up until 12 I used to attend art classes. I loved it. Since then (I am 26 now) I've been wishing I could do something about it and paint, sculpt and try new technicques... Your videos inspired me to look for an art course or a ceramics class. I will try and find one! Your videos have awakened a long forgotten dream of mine. All the best from Poland!

I am so happy you are feeling inspired and looking into art again! I think sometimes life drives us away from our creative outlets which makes us scared to jump back into it. It might be weird, but I always get so excited to see you use molds that come from Portland, Oregon. I think it’s really cool to have molds that were made in my hometown being used someplace so far away.
Oh my gosh, I don't know why this is relevant but when I was going through chemo I was researching America and the places I would love to visit and Portland, Oregon was on the top of my list. I don't know why. I think I read it had some groovy arty things to do! I didn't even realise it was the same place I had researched until I read your comment. Can you confirm, is it a groovy place to visit?
Shelby Sherritt Art Yes! It’s definitely a really cool place to visit. Even just the greater Portland area has lots of cool things to see and do. I don’t know how much American news, if any, is talked about where you are, but the current events within the past year have caused downtown Portland to change a bit. I still think the city is beautiful and there’s still some parts of it that I believe would be fun for tourists to visit with current conditions. But obviously I wouldn’t recommend you visit until we have less covid cases.

Portland isn't my home town but Oregon is, though I did live there in the 90s. It's that Oregon pride that made me reply to your comment.
I think they would be lovely in a fish tank. Especially the one that you made that looks like the ocean floor.

The coral one is my favorite! Between the sweet little face and tiny little fishes, it is just so sweet! I am the type of person who collects fun figurines just because so I think that it’s ok if they just exists as cute decor. But if you did want to make them into a vessel, you could open the top of the back and make it into like a succulent planter. That would be fun too.
Yes I totally thought the same thing! Things can just exist just because they exist! I sometimes get overwhelmed with moulds like this because I question their function and why they were made. However, sometimes just exist because people like it! Thank you for this comment! It was really lovely to read!

I love the "poo" seal so much! It looks like it was carved from wood. Am I crazy for liking it? 😂 It might honestly be my favorite out of all of them, although they're all extremely cute.

These are my favorite so far, and the brown one doesn't look like pooh it looks like wood...or drift wood! I love him!

do have to say, I love the more natural earthy finishes and oxide glazes, but I am a massive fan of 70s pottery especially the textured German and Scandinavian styles you find.
Oh gosh, I just love it all! I have so many styles I like and I often have to hold myself back in the homewares section of the Op Shops, all the oxides, earthy glazes, the bright colours everything attracts my eye! I think thats why I love this series because I get to do all the things that I wouldn't usually get an opportunity to do in my usual work!
@@ShelbySherritt my poor mother will attest to the sheer 'colectability' i find in vintage german pottery and her constant having to store my finds for me >.< theres something magical about the total loss of control the artist has when aplying the glazes and oxides and then the magic of the kiln taking over prducing something so unpredictable yet weirdly perfect in its uglyness. its so nice to see you use these blanks and just go to town on them. even the ugly-poop seal is just perfect to me (and the greeny blue shell vase you did too omg i lost it over that!) :) all art is magicaly improved when we loose a little of our control :D
I love the coral one! It reminds me of this traveling cow exhibit in Colorado. They had a different artist decorate each cow however they wanted and ultimately they were auctioned off for charity. Somehow the more realistic the mould, the more delightful they are covered in whimsy.
I LOVE THIS! Its actually something I would love to touch on in the series! I would like to see another artist paint one of the pieces in their style!
We had something similar with piggy banks. Everyone painted a different one for auction. That was in Banff AB. They were displayed in store windows with #s so people could bid on favourite in a silent auction.
I remember seeing that painted cow exhibit thing somewhere in a southern California beach town.

HEHE! These moulds were sitting on top of each other actually when I pulled them from the shelf so I just went with it and thought why not. When I did the crab first (I literally painted it the week before easter) I thought I better do the seal with some corals to make up for the missed opportunity!

I'm low-key obsessed with the rainbow one but the coral one is by far my favorite and though i LOVE the white doesn't need to be changed there's something really gorgeous about it but I did wonder what that blue antiquey thing you do would look like under the coral

This shape is very tactile- just the sort of thing you put on a table to be admired. I even like the brown one. I can imagine seals in white with little Christmas hats painted on them, on my side table near my Christmas tree or in my entrance porch……..

My experience with the Amaco brush on glazes is you only get the effect when applied quite thick.. three coats at least. Even if the thick coat feels like you will lose texture, the effects of the glaze end up filling the details and creating texture.
I’ve even seen people dip with them to create an even coat and it still works fine!
I love seeing both your underglaze work and glaze in these series, fun contrast of the techniques :)

Thank you so much! I usually use about three coats of it but for this one I kind of wanted a washed out streaky feel, it just wasn't the streaky feel I was going for! HAHAHA the fun of glazes hey!? I always feel like Im going to have a glaze disaster with amaro from how thick you have to apply it! Makes me so nervous, so this is so reassuring, even the dipping comment has tempted me with other pieces hehe!
@@ShelbySherritt haha yeah I’m yet to try dipping, but I have poured and it worked perfectly! I guess some are more runny than others, but will say on the bottle?

Noo the precious brown poo one. The face is SO SWEET, it absolutely looks like a dog (and im not saying any SPECIFIC dog, certainly I wouldnt call out my OWN dog like this. He would never do this. Ever. At least not more than once a week ....) who has seen a mud puddle, went "I LOVE WATER" and rolled in it - and then turned around and looked guilty because he knows that the back seat of my car is never really going to recover. It's such a guilty look of "yes, i did do that. ...yes i would do it again."

HAHAAH I know right! I mean it wouldn't have been that bad if the shape of the seal from behind didn't look like a poop already but you get that!
The brown and blue one looks like somebody was using Marmite or Vegemite to tar and feather him.

Your seals are cute! Glazing is hard. I think the brown seal is actually pretty good. Wonder if pouring or dipping glaze would work better than painting it on?

If you open up a hole in the back or mouth, they could be used for small flower arrangements.
