  • It was a do or die situation. An India Pakistan match on 28th February 2003. a day before the match, the dressing room was feeling like a pressure cooker. After the parliamentary attack of 2000, this was the first match India was playing against Pakistan. There were hopes for a revenge. But it was difficult as India was on a losing streak. First, they lost to west indies at home. A defeat against New Zealand, and then again losing to south African club team in a world cup warm up match. India couldn’t even play a 50 over match against Netherlands.it was humiliating. Australia took out the entire team in just 125 runs. The lowest score made by India in a world cup. and the seventh lowest among the top test playing nations.
people were so angered by this loss that Sachin Tendulkar called a press conference to calm the fans down.
We won the next match against England with the help of superhuman Ashish Nehra & now it was time to face Pakistan.
Shoaib Akhtar had gone out of his way to challenge Sachin.
the pressure was such that Captain Ganguly actually said that someone would get a heart attack. and as Yuvraj and Sehwag tried to ;lighten thigs up
the one person they couldn't help was Sachin
for the past year - Everywhere he went, people pleaded to win the match, no matter what. Too much pressure, too many expectations. Sachin had played countless finals, stood against all odds. But this time he couldn’t sleep at nights. Two weeks, he spent tossing and turning, imagining and reimagining.
    but as the match started
    things quickly went bad
Saeed Anwar with his aggressively batting brought Pakistan to 273.
only 2 times was a score higher then this chased in a world cup
Morales were low, tempers were high, and Harbhajan Singh’s temper was at another level. To cool himself off, he reached the lunch area, where Yousuf Yohana along with Wasim Akram were having a fun banter. Joking here and there. Both the teams trying to keep up trying to be better than the other. And that was when Yousuf said something about Bhajji’s religion. Triggering Bhajji. Situation escalated and they were standing face to face with forks in hand. Seniors separated them. In the dressing room, instruction of staying calm was given for first 10 overs. As they stepped on the ground, the stadium cheered. Along with Sehwag, it was Sachin who had opened. The first over passed as planned. but second over went to Shoaib Akhtar wo decided to Provoke Sehwag by, insisting that he hit a hook a hook. Whereas Sehwag was fuming with anger after what happened with Bhajji. Promptly replying “You see that there on the opposing end, Waha tera baap khada he - your daddy is standing there, Go and tell him, to play a hook shot”. As the game proceeded, and rather than sticking to the plan, Sachin who seemed to be in the zone bursting out of a year of constant pressure
he just decided to let loose
and so started the 3 shots that would go down in the history of Indian cricket
Sachin went on to neutralize one of the most dangerous bowlers in the world. He later confessed that he didn’t plan to bat in that way and was supposed to stick to plan but then he changed in the middle as he seemed to be in the form of his life.
Sachin kept on scoring at a lightening pace, demolishing Waqar Younis and Akrram in the process
but just like a Bollywood movie the sleepless night, were started to affect him and Sachin suffered with cramps. A Physio was called, A runner was called, none of it worked. Sachin couldn’t move anymore. And the worst part was, just before his century, just 2 runs away, he got out. 99 runs away from the target. many times before him had his team lost after getting the upper hand hence A limping Sachin made his way to the dressing room, feeling guilty, heartbroken and disappointed.
But thankfully Dravid and Yuvraj decided to play test cricket. They took 20 overs in total but somehow the brought the match too a close
Indian went on to win the match
pushing Pakistan out of the world cup
Pakistans Vice-captain Inzamam ul Haq resigned then and there. Captain, coach and other 8 players were fired. As the team came down for post-match ceremony, Sachin was greeted with the loudest cheer. Celebrating on the ground and in the dressing room, Sachin called his wife, just to hear the early Diwali being celebrated. Captain was also on the call with chief of army staff in India. Congratulating the team. The team called this match as one of the most important matches of their career.
This was the story of the centurion.

for those of you saying this wasn't a do or die match for india - let me give an explanation. 3 teams were to make out of this group with Australia already having secured their place by defeating everyone.
Now - the qualification had become a race between India pakistan and England....for the remaining 2 spots. but here came the twist - India had defeated England, England had defeated Pakistan...
Now if pakistan defeated us - it would create a three way tie in which the outcome would be decided by the NRR and THAT WAS A PROBLEM -
coz of the 125 all out against australia and not finishing in front of netherland....
so in nutshell...if we lost to pakistan....we would be fourth due to NRR...i.e. OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT.
now all this being said...it is true that england was behind in points...but that was beacuse they had BOYCOTTED PLAYING AGINST ZIMBABWE IN ZIMBABWE ( due to racial preferrance rules).
so while this match( India vs pakistan) was due to happen - there were rumours abound that serious negotiations were going on in order to replay that zim - eng match...
coz having england being knocked out due to politics was a big Black eye for ICC...
Now if that match would have been played = Points equal = India knocked out....hence this was a DO OR DIE MATCH.
Now that match never materialised, england got knocked out....and Henry Olonga got banned for life due to his protest...but all that happened after the fact - At that moment...the match mattered....A LOT

How you can forget this ever big slap on whole Indian black face? Here is:

The biggest slap ever on Indian face. Shoaib bowled him out 12 times out of 17 times he faced to your so called useless god. Who never played for India rather for himself, One of the most selfish player Cricket ever produced?
He made 15000 useless runs whereas he didn't play only 15 innings where he proved himself "A Man of Crisis or Got through India from crisis leads to win". Also it took more than one and half years to make him last so called 100th centuries which he made against Bangladesh.
Have you forget, still Pakistan is ahead in Test and ODI with India? Only T20 you are ahead, but it is not going to far. Very soon, you will be crushed. As We crushed you with 152-0 - A 10 wickets victory more weighted all the Indian world cup winning. Only one match made a history, There couldn't be a better slap than this.

    For kiddos :
    - The 1st thing we use to ask coming from school during ongoing one day match was , Sachin khel rha hai na? ( not out) , 2nd - what's the target/score .
    - Bats with MRF stickers were expensive as compared to others.
    - when he use to be in 80+ , India use to stop , doesn't matter what , it use to feel personal success.
    - Sachin out , tv off . (Before yuvi, dhoni's era) as rest use to suck , he carried whole batting on shoulder.
(THIS IS ONE OF REASON WHY TEAM USE TO LOSE EVEN AFTER HIS HUNDRED, BECAUSE RESTS WERE TAKING MONEY TO LOSE IN 90S)

As someone who respects "The God" of the cricket equally but still has been the fan of Virat Kohli since 2011, I can confirm it has been same even for me & today's generated as a fan like:
      - Celebrating Virat's milestone just the way he does with the same Agression and then repeating it in even gully cricket
      - Leaving out all the business whenever India was 2 down (which later turned into habit of watching game when India got 1 down)
      - Switching off TV once Virat gets out
      - While it may not be true that Virat always carried India on his shoulders, this is not wrong to say that he presents this game in a way which makes you fall in love with his passion and his way of representing this game with his own wrist is just unbelievably classic & beautiful
And that is why this generation may cross their limit while comparing King of the cricket with the actual god so well overall few kids won't be able to understand the value of Sachin's era, but it is still understandable why they support Virat
(PS - This wasn't a comparison comment just a reminder of how things carry on from generation to generation)

Reasons could be: Players have become aloof, IPL killed off much of the connect, everyone has TV in their hands but less time to watch, Cricket was masaledaar because we "loved" Indian player and cricket was a war and we thought other teams were to be "hated" because they are "against" India especially "evil" Pakistan; and whether you like it or not, Pak used to be string team and had a chance of defeating India and we were afraid they would win so defeating them was so satisfying.
Now people from a young age have been exposed to IPL and have learnt to praise players due to performances and not due to their nationality or skin colour (but thankfully judging based on religion is still there, so particular people will always be considered "bad" thanks to that :D)

By 22nd over, India's total was close to 160. Had Sachin and Kaif would have continued for a few more overs, the ease with which they were batting, the match would have been over before 40th over itself. What that fourth wicket partnership did was to push India's innings run rare well over the required one, allowing Dravid and Yuvi to take their time and play normal cricket. This was one of those rare ultra-attacking batting from Team India during the pre-T20 era. Even though day matches in Centurion have seen teams batting second dominating proceedings, still the target was stiff. It took cramp and a searing short-pitched stuff from Shoaib to pluck out Master Blaster's wicket, who on that day, looked a different batter altogether.

The last some partnerships from Pakistan helped them reach 270
I was like now this match is lost but when Sachin and Sehwag batted, oh my god. That was treat to watch. 50 runs in 5 overs in those days, my god, we were flabbergasted 😮
Sachin played such beautiful shots that we were amazed. Still remember when sehwag and Ganguly got out in 2 consecutive balls still sachin kept on playing
After Kaif and Sachin were out, we were nervous but then Dravid and Yuvraj batted like test match and when we were close to victory my dad started watching (he never watches cricket) and the last winning shot, four which Dravid hit, man whole city here in jammu celebrated, it was like a diwali
I still remember in news Atal Bihari Vajpaye (then PM), Lal Krishna Advani(deputy PM) congratulated Team India. It was high tension game and those days India Pakistan match used to be like war.

    Why is Sachin the GOAT?
been watching cricket since 95 - sachin was the highest scorer in 1996 World Cup, 2003 World Cup (7 YEARS later) he was highest scorer and also made 673 runs which is record of most runs in World Cup history, 2010 (14 YEARS after 1996 and 2yrs before he retired from white ball cricket) he scored a T20 century, won IPL orange cap which I thought Sachin would never as T20 wasn’t his format plus he was old, - also he was the FIRST INDIAN BATSMAN to win the orange cap - despite the fact he didn’t play T20 internationals and also was at the END of his career. 2010 he also scored the first ODI double century, 2011 (15YEARS after 1996) again one year before he retired, he was World cup’s 2nd highest leading scorer in the World Cup which we won and was only 10runs less in total runs than Dilshan. - between that he scored 100 centuries in an era where white ball watches avg score was 250 and 300 total looked unchaseable .- that’s why he is the GOAT. Period.
For anyone who doesn’t agree - There is a 1hr video on CZcams released by ABC sport about Sachin and Bradman 2 weeks ago. watch the first 5mins and you will Understand sachin’s level

ICC T20 in the US is going on.. and I have seen many batsmen. Sachin's posture, and when the bat meets the ball; every instant of his Strokeplay was just as beautiful as it could get. No one on this planet will say Sachin is great because of the way he stood, walked, moved. They all see the end result. When you look deep into his career as an adult (I was born in '89); I see God in his expression of his batting.
Nothing is out of tempo; it's an orchestra playing when you see the straight drives, just sit down and enjoy. Many tell of his humbleness and he has friends around the world. That's why we call him God (I know he doesn't like it). Even great captains and bowlers have said including legends; when you start seeing him play; just relax and enjoy. He like everyone would get out or maybe stay not out.. but what's shocking is he actually outplayed some of his fans. If you even get close to look like Tendulkar did you will do well in International cricket.
His love of form, stitching and using his own cushions in the pads.... It's all unique.... Yet when he played it looked so obvious. We will see great players in the present and the future. Sachin is in his own category... even people who inspired him say I admire him. Then there's Late Sir Don Bradman.. I don't compare.. this is a different level a different league. When Sachin played Indian Roads went empty.. No one can ever do that.. But somewhere inside me; I want someone to do better than him in one way..

    Well made video 👍
Two facts that the narrator left out to increase cinematic appeal of the video
    1. Sachin got out in this match by a surprise blitzkrieg 150 +kmph bouncer by akthar . Sachin getting out to a sweep shot , shown in the video is not from this match
Sachin was taken by surprise, and was taken down by catch by yonnis khan . It was a heart stop moment as an Indian cricket fan.
Addition of this fact would have diluted the " sachin dominating akthar" narrative.
Though akthar had the last laugh , damage had been done by sachin
    2. Sachin was not at his best . He escaped multiple false shots, edges and catch drops
However as a sachin fan, i love this video

i was in the 4th class at that time and i have never watched cricket before... my father came home at night with his friend and his friend said " match chal raha hai aur sachin bat kar raha hai " then they both started watching the game and when the shoaib akhtar's over came they both started cheering and clapping which made me to leave my study and go in that room and watch cricket for the first time. I still remember those memories when i saw sachin batting and playing those shots..

Anyone who hasn’t watched this match should watch it to see Sachins greatness. So much pressure. At lunch time everyone had given up. And they say Bradman was the greatest ever! Bradman didn’t play with this much pressure.

Now we don't see this kind of rage 😢
Even after pulwama attack or other attacks
    Our players don't show rage
