- During the NBA draft of 2013, Doc Rivers voices his opinion on NBA Analyst from Boston, Bill Simmons. Doc Rivers (new coach of the Los Angeles Clippers) is accused by Bill Simmons of "quitting on the Celtics"... enjoy the tension.

Bill Simmons was too real for ESPN. Lol
Grantland was the best thing (my opinion of course) that happened to televised NBA after Inside The NBA on TNT. It had great shows (like the teams seedings each season or the Birdmester), specilized true stories (spiced up a bit probably but who cares) from an actual legit NBA player, it was real, it was funny and I have a feeling it started messing up with ESPN's plans for the type of sports journalism today which is mostly focused on clickbait headlines and saying stupid stuff for attention.
Doc Rivers is just such an overrated coach, an entire career getting jobs with perfect situations, with loaded rosters, but at the end of the day he’s just not very bright and he’s out for himself. 22 years as a head coach with the one championship and one other finals appearance. Not a coincidence that the Suns without him this year have made the finals and the Sixers with him this year crashed and burned. Simmons was absolutely right of course.
@@jefffawcett he got lucky with boston. overrated coach of all time.
That's why he created The Ringer
I never liked him too much
The set made it more awkward being so quiet.... Bill was not nervous or awkward at all
His pp shrunk
Lol. Both comments were gold
I know the 2 guys in the middle had nothing to say. You can speak up and disagree or agree.
Bill is right. Doc is still doing this even in Philadelphia. He did this with comments about Ben Simmons. First he said he didn't know if Ben was going to be the point guard moving forward then he completely shifted gears and said he was our man. He's just not the best with public relations. He gets really emotional and then he waffles and then he backtracks. Would be better if he just said no comment especially after all these years of doing this.
None of those guys wanted to co-sign Bill’s comments. I’m not sure if they didn’t agree, or were just scared.
I respect Bill for not backing down.
respect
Lol. It’s not a matter of backing down; what kind of man attacks a man he doesn’t fucking know for taking another job?
Remember, Bill basically called for Doc’s job and then when Doc left he wants to try and make himself part of the story by attacking Doc.
Simmons is a sniveling little brat. His takes are usually very biased or completely wrong. He's even worse now than then.
It’s only cuz he’s a lifelong Celtics fan
@@itannoysme3348 cry
That's a refreshing level of honesty. The other guys don't even know how to react, almost like a "hey guy, what's with all the honesty and real talk"?
He would get canceled for that take now lol
@@benroethlisberger2567 He DID get cancelled. He got fired from hosting the Finals on ABC!
So true
"i would call him an idiot but i'm too classy for that" is the same thing as calling him an idiot
That was the joke...
i would like you to call you an "airhead" for not understanding the joke but i'm too classy for that.
That’s like saying with all due respect and then being absolutely disrespectful.
Oh really?????
eminem @@ir0ckfartz
In hindsight, love the directness and honesty by Bill Simmons
He was and still is spot-on about Doc being a lousy coach.
Watching this now it’s so clear that Bill didn’t belong on ESPN. They aren’t comfortable with smart, opinionated people that stick to their arguments. I’m so glad he’s free with the Ringer now
Actually, I'd say that the issue with ESPN is that people are too opinionated and not open to admitting their faults or covering new stories. Simmons is just a different flavor of the talking heads that pervade the channel. Sports coverage should not be about the personality it should be about the sports, and if your personality can shine through anyway then that's icing on the cake.
He got richer once he left 😂
@@VulcanThaCreator they are told to tell both sides of the narrative. Good cop/bad cop routine etc … Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless dont really act how they do on TV
Same reason guys like Rome, Cowherd, and Skip are all gone too. ESPN wants everyone to be PC bots
@@EducationInHistory what is a PC bot? Show us on the doll where political correctness hurt you.
Bill nailed it. Also nailed his Giannis analysis when no one else knew who he was. Bill was on point that night, and actually many nights before and since.
He’s just too real for espn😂
“It obviously was a great trade for Brooklyn” might be the coldest take ever
😂😂😂😂😂
He said as well “it’s a great trade for the Celtics, but not right now” he’s wasn’t lying tho
They don’t trade those pick they don’t get this big 3 🤷🏽♂️
@@user-vk4dj3dg6r exactly.
Nah because everyone wants to act like they knew the truth because of hindsight but at the time everyone thought the nets fleeced the Celtics hard by getting their two best players
Looking at this now, Doc really is one of the most overrated coaches of all-time. Dude bailed on the Celtics when they were no longer playoff contenders, did historic choke jobs with the Lob City-era Clippers, and now choked yet again against the Hawks with the #1 seeded Sixers.
Overrated compared to who playoffs every year he just loose like George Karl
@@knowitall3892 except Karl only ever had one good team that could’ve got it done and they had to play Jordan to finish the job. It can be argued that Karl overachieved with his Bucks and Nuggets teams. Doc has underachieved with multiple teams
Rivers holds two of the longest losing streaks in NBA history. 18 and 19 games in Orlando and Boston, respectively. The guy has always been a bum.
Here to relive those great days with my brothers now. One of the most arrogant men when talking to journalists. Ruined his karma. And here his team is again. Choking a 3-2 lead 😊
Bilas and Jalen don’t want any part of that conversation lol
This was only awkward because the panel doesn’t know how to handle adult situations. ESPN has been a joke for years.
The main difference between Bill Simmons and other guys who work on espn is that he does this as a serious job and works hard at it while the other guys are just there as part of their retirement plan.
I don’t even like Simmons and I agree with this
Doc Rivers is as good at giving media interviews as he is at winning playoff series with a 3-1 lead.
2013 draft was garbage, but Simmons made the coverage watchable
Jalen be like "Don't get fired Bill"
I hate the fact that weather you agree with Bill or not he has an opinion and has the balls to share it with everybody else unlike Jalen & Bilas which both sat their looking like Forrest Gump without anything to say!
...sat there looking like Forrest Gump?
the truth is that no one cares except Bill LOL
@@kingcobrajfsofficial LMFAOOO that was a random analogy
Lol y'all need to watch the beginning of the movie again
"It's a great trade for brooklyn" that didn't age well
It's funny using the word age with that Brooklyn team cause of how old they we're as a team lol
@Alvin Joe They got Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum off of that trade, Sounds like it worked out for Boston
Alvin Joe didn’t realize a trade from 2013 helped them sign free agents in 2019
@Alvin Joe I guess ur a true believer in the butterfly effect
@@mjf2891 didn’t it help them clear up the cap space to make it happen?
Damn i just realized Bill simmons was realest person on ESPN
Absolute facts he isn't a puppet
Behind Jason Whitlock
Bill Simmons is the michael jordan of journalism
Cj Buford The Washington Wizards-era Jordan.
aaa77712 Yet Simmons is cited as having changed the sports media landscape -- single handedly -- by literally everyone in the sports world. And here you are, commenting about him on youtube. Yeah.
Mike Davis Really? Source one example outside the Boston area code. Comparing sports teams and personalities to your favorite movies while ruminating on the latest moves by a basketball team nobody has cared about since Bird retired is not exactly "changing the sports media landscape" in the eyes of most people. And btw - you're commenting about a guy commenting on youtube... yeah... you.
Lol, whatever tool, just show me someone saying he hasnt. I don't need to cite shot for you, just Google his name and read dumbass. BTW Boston win the title in 08 and people care, hardly 'since bird retired' .... wtf are you, a bitter lakera fan? Lmao
And btw, you're commenting aboit a guy commenting about a guy commenting -- your fucking point is? I wasn't the one attempting to insult someone far more educated. Successful and famous than I like you and the douche bag above were. Get the fuck over it, bill Simmons is better than you.

It must be a sad situation your in that your jealous of Simmons. It'll be ok thou, maybe one day you'll be as famous and successful as he is. LOL
Doc Rivere is the most overrated coach of all time, coming from a sixers fan
💯💯💯
I respectfully disagree. The Sixers' failure this year lies at the feet of 1 man, Ben Simmons. At the pro level, a coach can't teach to shoot or how to shoot free throws. Ben had mental breakdown. That's not Doc's fault.
Facts and I'm a sixers fan also
@@vandamation No, it is Doc’s fault. You literally admitted it when you blamed Ben Simmons for losing you the series to Atlanta. One player doesn’t lose you a series. The 76ers bench sucked, and Doc didn’t make any changes to the gameplan. It’s entirely Doc’s fault 😂😂
@@shchorss So I guess it's Doc's fault that Simmons was too scared to dunk on Trae Young. I guess it's Doc's fault that Simmons has NO PERIMETER GAME but wants to play a perimeter position. Yeah.. they should fire Doc and hire somebody else. It's clearly not Ben's fault
Huge fan of Bill for his honesty but after seeing this I now understand why he is no longer with ESPN 😂
Shannon Legg yeh I noticed that aswell. Those 2 are friends and Jalen will talk under water but he's not stupid either and understands that his media career is everything to him and has been for over 20 years. He knows when to keep his mouth shut haha
1. Simmons was right
2. Doc handled that question like a master
Two masters at work lol
Doc, the classless master.
Oops, I thought this video was about Doc Rivers thoughts on Ben Simmons.
Doc had to be held back by the coaching staff and players when he got in an argument with Rajon like he was about to charge at the guy. Obviously this guy can't control himself. Good job by Simmons and this is from a Lakers fan.
You did call him an idiot so apparently you’re not too classy for that. Props to bill for not backing down
"I would like to call him an idiot, but I just did". Reeeeally classy...
Lol arguably the best end of a second round in draft history
Bill is funny whenever he comes on 2k broadcast
Bill Simmons > all of ESPN
He's just a whiny Celtics fans....not sure how ESPN needs to stack up against that....
Doc Rivers is one of the most overrated coaches of all time
Definitely and longer he coaches the more clearer it is that Garnett was the leader of that celtic team
Yeah its almost surprising he even won a title. I like Doc Rivers but man sometimes his coaching makes no sense to me.
Steve Kerr and Nick Nurse have entered the chat
@@joejoiner8582 I ain't putting Steve Kerr in that he's a great coach imo but nick nurse maybe
@@Biokrave ty lue arguably....he's very good when he has stacked teams but without elite players he was horrid as most would......larry brown is a top 5 coach because he could win with a great team or a poor one
"I'm classy" - people who say things like this - "I'm smart", "I'm classy", etc. usually aren't.
Love the awkward pauses
Most of the hate in chat don't know how much Bill knows about the NBA. Bill Simmons is more qualified to run a team than 90% of the current ones. Only problem is is that he loves Boston sports too much.
I’m still shocked he’s not the GM of a team. He’s very qualified and knowledgeable
@@matchesmalone2625 lmfaoooo He's not GM qualified , he need to stick to books and podcasts
I love Bill, I’m cracking up so much rn
Love Doc, don't mind Simmons. But I always think Bill lets his feelings about Boston cloud his reporting.
Wow, can’t believe somebody actually said that and wasn’t a cheerleader for him.
“You go Bill, you stand up against Doc Rivers taking a better job!” as if that’s something hard to take a stand on.
You jade the narrative fuck you I’ll say it again fuck you’
Idk I think Bill is spot on with this one. Doc didn’t want to rebuild with Boston so he bounced. As a Celtics fan, it’s fine. I’m grateful for what doc accomplished with us and glad he’s doing well with LAC.
@@PharaohsNews bill ripped him for changing his lies like the wind. Just own up to the truth
Lol bill gets so riled up about anything Celtics related
No. Where can I find one?
Bill Simmons is the man. He says pretty much what he wants. Too bad he wont be on ESPN any more.
+musicum22 It's why he isn't on ESPN anymore.
Only awkward because of how this was handled imagine if this happened and he was up there with the TNT crew it would probably be hilarious and great tv.
3 Things:
1. You shouldn't have a "Homer" (Simmons) on a National Sports panel - because things like this occur.
2. Shelley Smith should not have asked Doc that question -- NO good could have come out of that question. Either Doc ignores it or responds the way he did. It just makes things uncomfortable.
3. Doc: You in fact did call Simmons an idiot by saying what you said... just because you say, "I would like to call him an idiot but..." doesn't mean you get away from calling him an idiot.
There is so much funny stuff in this video, but nothing like Olynik picked before Giannis :D
Hahaha, as Jalen would say, don't get fired Bill!!
As much as I wanted to hate on bill being a laker fan. Over the years you can't help but be drawn to how genuine, and honest he is. He breaks things down to simplest human form and from that perspective Looking back at his predictions he is right about 95% of the time
Grand opening…. Grand Closing. Thanks Bill
meaning?
i wish bill simmons was on espn rn
why? he has a way better platform on his own podcast. ESPN cant handle Bill and thats why ESPN sucks
this draft had incredible content
did that reporter jay new jersey because im sure its called brooklyn
THANK YOU!!!!!!
This is why nowadays I'm subbed to the ringer and not espn.
Whether you like Bill or not you have to appreciate what a straight shooter he is, just no fucks given
BILL SIMMONS IS THE GOAT!!!!
if this was inside the nba they wouldve made it funny
did u say David Robinson was on his last legs? seriously?
The women interviewing Doc said "New Jersey" instead of Brooklyn
they won the title in 1999 as well. he was only in his 10th year then. and yes 2003 he won another title in his 15th year and retired. what bearing does that have on the 1999 championship? Robinson was hardly on his last legs.
God these comments, still flat out hilarious this was 8 years ago
Well said, Bill. I'm doubtful that Doc is eager to reveal 'the whole story'.
Wait, wait, the girl talking to doc said that kevin and paul were going to NEW JERSEY, there in brooklyn now baby
Bill was right, this action that Doc Rivers did will forever set him back being the top coach in history or top nba coach of this decade. He was too lazy to rebuild and he decided to ditch the celtics. That doesn't make you a good coach by any means. Doc Rivers is a great leader, but he's not a great coach like a phil jackson or Greg popovich.
Yea.....because Phil Jackson doing it a couple of times really tarnished his legacy and how people rank him as a coach....
2legit2sh!t Doc is not Phil Jackson quit comparing the two. Do you even have knowledge on the game of basketball?
You brought him up, bud. I was pointing out the fact that you think Doc has killed whatever his legacy will be because he left. Phil did the same thing more than once....woosh over your head.
You're just a classic bitter Boston fan. Bill Simmons belongs in courtside seats at the TD Garden, not on TV. He's too much of a fanboy to take seriously as an analyst.
What makes him any different than every other non-former athlete talking head at ESPN? Oh that's right - a couple of them are NY fan boys. My bad.
damn i thought it said “Ben Simmons” lol
Lmao I like that when Bill Simmons is talking to the rest of them on the table they all just stare at him and then look away.. No one has anything to say lol.
Gotta hand it to bill dude loves his celtics for better or worse
Bill is box office, he’s one of the only people who will say what they actually feel no matter what the circumstances are
You know if any team signs doc as their coach, that fan base is immediately like oh no
she said new jersey not brooklyn
Bill has a face and a voice perfect for print
And as usual Bill Simmons is 100% right. Nothing wrong with what Doc did, but just say it like it is. Don't dance around it.
for once i agree with everything you said, but another thing is doc kept changing his mind like dwight howard or kept lying to fans about where he was going and what he was gonna do, all bill wanted him to do is be honest and "own" what he says, dont keep toying with the emotions of fans
Love bill, lol
A lot of the picks on the ticker are still hoopin!
After watching this video, I am more interested in who the Timberwolves picked.
Lorenzo brown pg nc state. Barely played. Looks like he won a ring with the Raptors. Has not played in the NBA since.
The bottom line is the media is not always privy to corporate decisions and Doc did the right thing. Doc didn't want to leave but management obviously made their minds up. Celtics fans just hate to see their demi-gods separated.
It was a great trade for Brooklyn that they made the similar buildup in 2019-2021.😂
Even Danny Ainge says Doc Rivers wanted to leave, and he was talking with the LA Clippers even during the regular season according to Ainge, but Ainge specified he wasn't mad or felt betrayed, it's just business... but yeah.. Doc Rivers bailed on the Celtics, but he rides his high horse and pretend he was forced out.
doesn't matter, Ainge already proved that Doc didn't wana be part of rebuilding project when he offered and asked Doc to stay, it was even before playoffs that Doc shopped around. The only difference is that the Boston front office isn't mad about it like Bill is.
Separate yourself from being a fan from doing your job...right
I feel bad for the other three guys on the set. It was clearly really awkward for them, as evidenced by their immediate silence.
Miss this Bill
very awkward moment on air LOL
tell em bill!
Simmons was 100% right, he wasn’t even knocking Doc, just wanted him to own it. 🤷🏻♂️
Simmons was awesome. ESPN should have given him a show.
Love ya Bill.
well this just appeared in my recommendation
i guess i watched too much doc and simmons lately
Good for you, Bill. Strong moral compass on that one.
CP3...Kawhi...Embiid
Doc missing Conference Finals with these superstars 🥴
“I’m too classy for that…” 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Damn Jalen ain’t saying shit.
You don't need one of the best coaches in the NBA for a rebuild, you do need one for a team like the Clippers that has a lot of good players but needs to make them gel to win a Championship. Boston saves money while rebuilding as well, win/ win .
Okay whatever you say you can drop it now lol
bills voice has gone up 3 octaves since leaving ESPN
When Bill Simmons Can Start In Basketball Dont Talk About Quitting Basketball but In 1492 when these people came they came with a double standard which they refuse to own it 🤔
That uncomfortable moment when you realize a fan somehow barged into the set of a national television show.
Very funny that this happened in hour 152 of the draft
I honestly have no idea who's "right" or "wrong" in this ESPN-manufactured drama. I just want to say I'm going to start using, "Just own what you did!" in response to everyone I even think did something wrong, no matter how slight or inconsequential to my life it is. That is all.
He was in his 16th year in the pros in 2003 you proved my point he is in his last legs when he retired come on man stop it
did she start off saying "Alright, babe..."
The worst thing ESPN EVER did was fire Bill, he was TV gold & even though he's getting fourth, third, second & last laugh, it's a shame he's not on TV
