- Subaru WRX CVT Loud Exhaust | Track Tuned and Modified | Automatic Transmission
It was my first time driving an Automatic Subaru, and I must say it was a treat and pretty fast for an automatic.
(Edit) After some recent events regarding the owner of this Subaru I have decided to remove anything related to him. All the parts from this car are from a shop in Ontario Canada, called PDM auto. They have pretty much sponsored this built.

I don't get why people say "pretty fast for an automatic". The GTR is an automatic. Majority of super cars are automatics as well
Brandon Kiyota they have a bad assumption that autos are slow, and I dont agree with it. Most supercars run on automatic. Autos are known to he fast, modern automatics. The thing with manual is that it is ageless. If the RS came with dct - i would have bought it.
Brandon Kiyota autos are lame! Plus you cant have the same fun. And a supercar automatic trans isnt the same as a subaru lol. It’s like manual transmission on steroids lol
MiataDreamer- Jack manual transmission on steroids? It's an automatic. If you put it in drive it shifts on it's own. Is that not the definition of an automatic transmission.
Sam CarLegion I agree with you, but I just never get all the hate automatics receive
Because the gtr only comes in auto...
You don’t want to be like this guy embarrassing himself with an automatic all modded out with a giant wing...
With a WRX with CVT, you can get the optional Subaru EyeSight which an awesome driver-assist cruise control and accident-avoidance system.
That's what I got...lol
The eyes you were born with along with maintaining proper distance are also excellent at avoiding rear end accidents
Agreed awesome options love my 2021 limited in black pearl
It’s awesome. Wish the guy who hit me had it.
Every auto wrx vid I've seen comments bashing on it are from 17-18yr old dreamers. Don't forget that.
Hunter Im 18, work every day, ad currently drive a WRX CVT STAGE 1+. Anyone who hates on the CVT just doesnt understand. Its really not too bad of a car. Would I go back and buy a stick? Probably. But I do not regret putting money on an automatic. If you would like to follow my build, follow @squidwardwrx on instagram
@@TheOkayOutdoorsman Hey Alex... M considering buying a WRX and I have to buy CVT cause I am on an Automatic License.. ( m in a new country and getting a license is a Major Hassel here... So for now I have a automatic only license n I can't upgrade to manual for 6 months.. ) so my question is is the car / CVT transmission able to handle all the Crazy Accelerations and Doing donuts.. and going crazy with it.. easily ... Or it's gonna be a an Expensive affair...
flyingwaiter I slide mine, do donuts, and with stage 1+ (intake, tune, exhaust, etc) its a fairly agressive car. Its alot of fun. But if you plan on doing all that, buy a mishimoto CVT cooler so you dont melt it down. Just to be safe
@@TheOkayOutdoorsman Awesome... I think I will be running it stock for a while... At least 6 months n then start modding it.. 1 mod at a time... Another noob question.. do blow of valves make sense for a CVT... ??? And will the car do "Achoooo"... Lolz...
flyingwaiter It wouldnt be a BOV. It would be a Bypass. And I switched mine out just to have one thats a little more quality. The boomba is a good option.
this wrx is stunning man ! Love the channel please do more 2015+ wrx build videos please
I have a CVT WRX and it's pretty fun to drive, and with just intake, exhaust and tune, it hits all the dopamine spots. My only concern is that wanting more power than stage 1+ would pose a serious risk for the CVT since it can't handle more than 320 wtq on the stock powertrain, so you'd have to spend lots of time and money to upgrade the torque converter and CVT internals.
I have a CVT WRX also, I have been looking into getting a louder exhaust because I do want that classic subie rumble, does the CVT give that or does it make it sound different?
@@CarltonDry The only difference the CVT has from the MT in terms of sound is the inherent constant-RPM drone that CVTs make, otherwise both sound the same with the same exhaust setup (pops and crackles too). However, if you give more than 30% throttle on S mode (40% on I mode) then the CVT starts to simulate gearing by holding the gear ratios to the same as that of the MT and shifting up when necessary. You can also just use manual mode with the paddle shifters, and that would sound the same as MT except for faster shifts.
did you tune it with a cobb access port or did you get a stand alone tune?
@@jeffreyxing7177 what kind of exhaust do you have on yours? I was looking into just doing a muffler delete on mine but don’t know how loud it’d be and if the droning would be worse for it.

It's unfortunate
I recently bought the cvt a month ago and its hands down so much fun! Just stock I'm beating hemi's stock! Definitely saving up to get a 6 speed sti so I have a city and race car!

Out of curiosity what tuner did you use? Cobb? E-tuning?
Thinking of getting a CVT wrx. Many people are trashing it. But I want cvt as daily driver in traffic and more driving friendly for my wife with children.
Khiem Ngo don’t think twice! To me is good enough and just use sport mode you will be fine.
I'm in the same boat but at the end of the day, you're the one making the payments and not them!
Khiem Ngo I got a cvt it’s a fun car
I was in the same boat. Wife can’t drive stick. As much as I wanted a manual, I bought the cvt. I already have a manual frs so I could make the compromise. Cvt is Fun! Easy to launch and sport # mode is a blast. Downshifting is a better experience than manual because you can do it so much faster. Main draw back is the exhaust noise is different from manual. Manual crackles more. Cvt crackles very rarely on downshift at very high rpm only with after market exhaust.
I have one and did it for the same reason, absolutely love it!
Heavily debating tradin my 09 hatch in for one, at the same time its in such good condition i may keep holding onto it. But very awesome to see one all done up like this
Hold onto that hatch man! If it’s in good shape like you say it is I’d like to think it will be worth more than the newer ones a bit further down the road but I could be wrong
Hold onto that
I am open to both gearboxes, but it’s all down to personal preference and the car’s intended purposes. Each one has it’s purpose and place. Each one has a trade off
I have this same car, love it.
Needed to be in Sport Sharp with Trac-Off. 8-speed ratios and snappier throttle response and lower gear holding.
Hello guys. Love the Wrx cvt. Can you let me know what mods you guys did on your Wrx cvt ? Thanks
I've got one. I'd be happy to share my mods, engine build, and tuning. I'm on Instagram too as Subiedad101

Hi… do you have the link for your exhaust system?
Where you get the body kit?
So if you cant beat on it whats the point on tuning it?🤷♂️
Exhaust setup?
Why is there no blow off valve when he shifts? it just sounds like a sluggish automatic. do all the cvts sound like this? recently was gifted one and i want it to sound like a manual when i shift lol
Because it's still an automatic, turbo boost doesn't need to vent to atmosphere because the throttle blade never closes, the engine is still under load. And yeah you're not gonna make it sound like a manual without buying a manual
How much power
Link to spoilers for CVT?
I own a Subaru and plan to buy a wrx in 3 months because I want to trest myself. U wanted a manual but something keeps holding be back based on the traffic in my area and how I'll be driving it. I got. New job that requires me sitting in traffic for almost a hour a day. I cant do that plus i want to start a family in. Few years.. stick with a new baby i would feel safe
Update: I got a 2015 sti
Did you buy it?

His Wrx cvt made 300hp wheels
I have an automatic lol but the reason why I got this instead of a manual is because people beat the shxt out of it HAHAHAHA I'd rather get an automatic and spend the extra money to trans swap but the car is still running pretty good
As manual car guy I have to admit you cannot change faster than a computer. For the city driving, "clutch in clutch out", can get tiring. The younger guys won't agree with this, wait till age catches up with you and all that manual driving for many years in a dense city will get tiring especially if you have a busy schedual. Professional race cars either have semi automatic transmissions/sequential or auto transmissions. It is very rare to see manual cars in high professional racing except nascar but even there they don,t change gears alot.
Agreed. I drove a manual for 15 years and yeah age got to me and I got tired of city driving. I'm now 36 and enjoy diving my Dodge Challenger with it's ZF 8HP auto transmission. I don't feel the need to go back to a slower manual transmission.
I hear ya, I was a die hard manual only driver from 1998-2016. I swore I would NEVER drive auto, then I bought a 2011 Mazda 3 sport hatchback with the 2.5 that was actually a very fun car even in auto. I now have a 2019 Civic coupe EX-t with my first ever cvt. I've owned it since 10,000 miles, so basically new. Been almost a year now, and I absolutely love it. It's true though, at 40 now I guess I'm just tired of shifting? I do plan on building an actual race car soon, and that will be manual.
How is the transmission holding up?
Michael Tiet i have an automatic 19’ and ive pushed it before and its actually very nice. very responsive but can be a little laggy in lower gears.
Lerzy it’s only laggy if u have traction on. Turn it off, and between 1st to 2nd gears doesn’t jerk
hs;ourh ghbnadejurgbn what 1st and 2nd gear do you speak of 🤔
YEP
automatic gang ;)
What’s bad about an automatic ? Right it’s your preference . But I do wanna learn stick shift as well
It's the CVT that's bad
I really wanna buy a wrx one day soon I currently have a 1993 si honda del sol 5 speed I enjoy driving stick but I really want to just get this in a automatic transmission, automatics receive alot of hate unfortunately, I just like it more laid back I guess this Is a car I'd like to drive on a daily my del sol is the type of thing I enjoy street racing or taking out in the country manual isnt just something I'd enjoy to drive on a daily lmao it just gets tiring and people that drive a stick everyday or often have to admit it gets tiring after while lmao
That’s what I always wondered. Sure a manual is a lot of fun, but what if eventually you tired of shifting? Manual drivers don’t like to admit that. I would love to drive a stick but I’m not sure if I would want to live with one everyday.
@@-nightraider-1169 I like it because I feel I have more control of my car and ofc u got control of ur rpms and theres cool stuff you can do but it's hard to daily a manual if you live in a city like i do when you're in traffic etc etc you burn out your clutch quicker usually when you live in heavy traffic areas so that's why I prefer automatic it def does get tiring you cant eat food or anything when driving a stick unless ur in 5th gear on the highway when you know u ain't gonna stop because you constantly gotta focus on your car I always say tho I think manuals are good for new drivers Cuz you cant really text and drive with a stick when you care about your car lmao it's also Is difficult when you first learn so it teaches u more than just driving which is good most people in america dont know how to drive manual anymore I think it's important because what if it's a emergency and the only car you had at your disposal is a stick anyways sorry for babbling but yes I agree
I need this car in my life
People need to do there research on cvt transmissions. And understand that there actually faster than clutch. it's not a regular automatic transmission with gears.
Normally yes but Subaru programmed in fake shift points.
@@Aashishkebab good thing my cvt is in a 2014 Mitsubishi lancer and not a crappy Subaru
Cvt and automatic are not the same thing at all....
They got rid of the hatchback why?
I understand the cvt to appeal to a larger market. They will sell a good amount of these because of the competition only having manuel. Everyone else sells a goddamn hatchback though! Lol
Rumors say 2019 we may see a hatch. Fingers crossed
Hatchback is for getting groceries.
Damn I hope they make a hatchback! I’m a big fan of them.
That wing though...
ThatR34Monster exactly lol.. Is it really necessary...
It helped with down force I noticed.
Sam CarLegion I see. Well, thanks for replying
The current gen wrx are notorious for understeering, im sure it will help a lot. Id be interested to see someone install the sti rear differential on a modded cvt and see how it performs in the turns
Not needed with only 300whp lol. It probably reduces his top speed by 30 mph
Is the CVT WRX really faster than the manual though? There're some many different acceleration numbers online, dunno what to believe
Michael Zhou yes
Believe in yourself and don't get an automatic lol
No its not. I have a manual 2018
Many manual transmission cars are slower than their auto versions, but this CVT is actually slower than the manual. Look it up the proof is all over the internet I don't even know why this is an argument.
No CVT WRX is not faster than manual but it's only like half a second slower or so.
Can you install COBB on a automatic?
Abiram Gonzalez yes you can
Cobb only offers a stage 1+ for the cvt wrx as they believe anything higher risks damage to your internals
@@tyler.the.collector716 This is true, I ran Cobb's stage 1+ on my CVT WRX for a while, but it kept throwing CELs so I got it properly tuned and now it runs great
Subaru should have made dct versions
fr tho
Big facts👎🏽 they talking bout how much faster it is but gd I’m not trynna hate but them shits is not! The cvt j ain’t it Subaru. A tuned DSG is just flat out superior.
10pts for each bike
Safe to downshift the cvt?
Cvts don't have gears so why the paddles lol.
Synthetic gears do some research!!
Can someone please explain what tuning the CVT will do? I want to get one of these but don’t want the annoying drone sound of a typical CVT, and I was told tuning it will get rid of it. Can anyone explain, thanks in advance.
Don't think it's possible to change it too much at all, unless they tune the belt to change to solid ratios just to mimic a normal automatic, but it'd probably wear the belt quicker and cause other problems. It's basically the whole design of a cvt, it's in the name. Annoying drone sounds in autos under acceleration come from the lack of constantly changing rpm under load, that little but of slippage creates not pleasant sounds
Wish Subaru would do away with the CVT trans and go with something more reliable when its in a sports car. Nothing sillier than a "sports car" you cant tune or modify passed 280 HP because it will blow up too easy. Maybe even dable with a v6 twin turbo 👀
2022 86 is half a second quicker 0-60 with manual than the auto.
Thanks to Subaru - I can drive a fast car and enjoy it, with all the aches and pains of an old fart that would make a manual an ongoing pain.....horses for courses?
Hmm Subaru should just borrow Nissan GT-R35 transmission for the up coming 2023 WRX / WRX ST-i 2DRC (2Dual Rally Clutch) with the newly 400HP engine and call it's an day. While discard/drops the "Sport CVT transmission," it belt SUX" because it will slips and not made to handles 400whp to the wheels. Hey, Subaru we want an new engine with R35 high performance dual or quad clutch transmission, then it worth the new car price and worth the waiting hype ;). Manual is good but as we ages, our left knee joint is no longer as young as my love for JDM sport car. Why does an person left leg is weaker than the right leg? .... 😥.
Only 270 wtq? That suck for all the mods done. It should be well over 300 tq easily
I was wondering the same thing haha, I make 280 wtq with only an intake and a slightly aggressive tune, so I think his tuner went super conservative to preserve the CVT, which still sucks for being FBO. Unless he upgrades his torque converter and CVT internals, he'll never make more than 300 wtq.
Is it just me or does the exhaust note on CVTs sound different ? I've had an sti back in the days and have heard lots of exhaust notes from rexys. This just doesn't sound the same. I thought it was only this video so I did a bit of searching for cvt wrx exhaust notes and they all sound a little weird. I know different exhaust have slightly different sounds but they all have something in common which is the rumble. The CVTs just don't seem to have it.
Chris C well it’s because the sti has unequal length headers with the ej which gives you that “rumbel” but on the newer wrx’s they have equal length headers with an fA20 engine. Cvt and manual sound the same
Wait...so what's the drama about?
i thought cvt's cant handle to much power increase
Leyo Souljaz apparently they can :)
Sam CarLegion well that’s good, I just got a cvt Honda and want to add more power so hopefully mine holds up too lol
Leyo Souljaz i think you need a cooler for the transmission as this Subaru has.
Sam CarLegion Oard thank you for the suggestion, I’ll definitely look into it!!
Can you fix your seat belt it's driving me nuts 😆
The WRX and STI need an optional standard automatic transmission with gears. The Subaru WRX CVT moans a lot.
should biuld a dct instead of a cvt
@@lifeisgood7807
Hello and thank you for your reply.
Yes, I agree. Unfortunately, Subaru is completely invested in the CVT, and it would not make business sense to build a new DCT for one car.
@@bobkloth57 yea i agree they put themselves in that whole by using cvts in all their cars but in order for subaru to reel in automatic transmission buyers they need to lose the cvt for a dct in the brz and the wrx and though thats a lot of money to create a whole new plant it could be possible since the brz and wrx transmissions are already built at its on dedicated plant

I speculate that the auto industry will be replacing the majority of the gasoline engines with electric vehicles by the end of this decade. Generally speaking, electric cars are faster than their gasoline counterparts. We will miss the sound of the unequal header STI rumble.

@@jjmmjj9999 tip tronic
@@jimmywatsup1 what.
How do you change gears in a CVT
There are 2 pulleys and a belt to adjust gear rations continuously.
You have one gear that keeps adjusting
You cannot change to a 2nd gear when it does not exist.
@@jjmmjj9999 Subaru programs fixed shift points, so that it acts and feels like a traditional auto.
Test drive a automatic like a automatic! What’s with the peddles? Don’t think ppl buy automatics for the peddles.
Max X i like the peddles. They give you a different feeling, like a race car.
I'm guessing you mean paddles. It is so much fun to drive cars with paddle shifters going fast. It gives you more focus on what your driving and it jeeps your hands on the wheel. People think shifting is not part of owning an auto. I love hitting the paddles and hearing the exhaust crackle.
It was pretty cool to play obnoxious music over it so you couldn't hear the sound you click on the video to hear
So basically you can’t drive manual.
“I like the auto, it’s more fun actually” hahahahaha
Whats so funny?
Sam CarLegion your hesitation. It's like you started speaking then thought shit that's not right.
You really think a cvt wrx is more fun than a manual?
Worm i generally think autos are more fun in corners. I hesitated because I was concentrating in driving the car. Not an easy task to drive and talk.
Sorry F1 drivers are not agree lol
I have a WRX with CVT - first WRX I brought with a non-manual transmission.....and I love it. Its actually pretty fun to speed down the street. My WRX is NOT a manual and I don't care. That just leaves my spare foot and hand to tap to the music that I can play in mine without worrying about using it to shift. Perhaps when the warranty is up, I'll consider a gearbox swap to a 9 or 10 speed.
These anti-automatic protesters are nothing more than a bunch overly conservative twits in the car community who get outraged all because they can't accept the fact that manual just isn't the superior transmission anymore and that it's almost dead. True gearheads? More like Karens in the car community.
Exactly my thinking, I can also make it look like an STI. I would argue however, that over all manual is better for off roading. Hell even the suburbs rally racers use a form of paddle shifters so…
Hey is ur WRX CVT?
yes
I have a 2017 WRX CVT wat stage are u running and what mods have u done?
@@Anthony-mp9wx Doesn't really matter if you have a cvt. You should only mod it till stage 1. If you go higher than 300hp, cvt transmission won't hold much longer. However, if you insist going further than stage 2 or 3 you will need a transmission cooler and all the bunch of other stuffs.
He better get a transmission cooler on that thing
Renaldo Bryan that the next step
I wish the guy didnt let you drive his car

JohnnyBeGood subaru made it so that they can increase their sales to the mass.since alot of people dont drive manuals or dont know how to drive one.especially 90% of woman that likes to buy subies will only get CVT/auto trans.ofcourse subie wanted and preffered their wrx and sti stay manual but they knew if they manufatured all manual, sales wont sell that much compare if theres an auto/cvt option. Im not hating on auto because most of us will get auto when we get old.but for now i stay manual. 2018 sti owner here.
Even wise practical men prefer Auto WRX over manual.
they did, and it's delightful. manuals lag behind with all that shifting, but they're so pleased with themselves in second place I guess.
John Stepp everyone buys what they like not what people like. I actually wouldn’t if my RS was automatic sometimes
2018 WRX CVT owner I am on boost all the time cause of no shifting. I came from my 14 wrx and i have a bad left ankle and sit in traffic a lot. This is actually a massive relief. You i guess..... did it seem fast? Usually they really don't even open up until after 60mph, the stage 2 cars.... but being the CVT I can't say... I had a 6 speed. First gear is nearly useless but 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are pretty decent.... not as fast as my 135i though with no mods besides the MHD stage 1 tune for $150 bucks.
For being an automatic it seemed fast - plus I get to drive faster cars so it’s tough to be impressed. But i did say it was fast
