  • What are the tuning options for WRX CVT's? Can you tune a WRX CVT? What are the modification options for a WRX CVT? In this video I discuss WRX CVT tuning, mods, etc. I walk about tuners, supporting modifications, WRX CVT transmission coolers, WRX CVT torque converters, etc.
This video goes over how much power and torque a WRX CVT can handle before transmission failure.
I talk about Cobb Stage 1 OTS tunes for WRX CVT's as well as other tuning options for automatic WRX's.

    I have a fully built 17 STI
But my GF has a 2019 WRX CVT
    She started off completely stock
Then got the AP V3 felt a good difference, then she got a Cobb big SF intake and a Cobb catback exhaust just for sound ,it felt okay but it wasn’t as responsive the DAM was dropping ,CVT,s run very rich and their constantly in boost so we decided to get some other things we pulled the trigger on a grimmspeed too mount intercooler and IAG TGV deletes EGR deletes and a grimmspeed electronic boost control solenoid with a pro tune from Paul at YIMI SPORT in SOCAL and the difference was night and day better cooling much more turbo boost with reliability final numbers 280 WHP 280torque . If they had the j -pipe in stock we would of done that also and it would of been a solid 300 at both angles , these mods aren’t only power mods but supporting mods and better then OEM with a J-pipe your reducing back pressure the TMIC your getting better air , equals more boost
You can run these mods and keep your numbers still pretty decent , remember it’s the same motor FA20DIT just different transmission and he is absolutely right at 310 to 330 is the max . Your gambling really at any numbers but if your tune is on point you won’t have an issue . When I first asked Paul about tuning this platform he was not hesitant at all he said sure you can’t run power 6speed but it’s the still the same motor .
Oh by the way I do like your videos but Cobb did have a stage 2 OTS that just included the J-pipe but they pulled within 6 months because the map was starting to make the CVT slip
So obviously stating a pro tune is your best bet not a E tune or EMAIL tune get your car on a DYNO .

I actually didn't know that they released a stage 2! I am jealous of your GF's car. The manual WRX and STI are great, but suck when dailying in traffic. What numbers are you making with your STI?

Auto Enthusiast yeah her car is pretty quick for what it is , my STI is making 529 WHP 489TORQUE on E85 one pump 91 it makes 450 WHP and 440 TORQUE it’s a fully built IAG STAGE 2 CLOSED DECK block with 1700 cc injectors DOM 3 turbo ETS FMIC the works pretty much I’m planning to change headers I have unequal length headers TOMIE planning on going equal length to get rid of the rumble , i want to get a rotated setup but it’s so expensive

Auto Enthusiast to be honest with you I have no clue I haven’t even took the car to the track or the strip I don’t really like launching my car I feel like it’s going to break . Track wise I don’t want to do a track day but unfortunately I’m on stock suspension right now I am going to get some TEIN coilovers but with my car there’s quite a bit of turbo lag like literally boost kicks in around 4500 that’s when you start hearing the EWG kick in then it sounds like BOEING 747 taking off it’s nuts lol so I need a track that’s made for higher speeds so auto cross is completely out of the question
It’s highway monster that’s for sure lol
      What about you ?

Most of us are daily driving our CVT’s. I wouldn’t recommend anything other than Stage 1, and maybe some aesthetic mods. Horsepower is nice but the amount you will spend, you would have been better off getting a STI or missing a manual WRX.

As an owner of a CVT myself, this was very helpful. The next upgrade I want to do is the mishimoto trans cooler. I've been trying to get a hold of my dealership if it would void my warranty. Would you know? I know that installing a tune would void the warranty.

So Subaru now uses a heavier weight synthetic oil in the CVT and changed the final drive gear to give there cars more lowend torque and maybe, longevity. These changes are within the last 2 years, so who can expound on this and how are Subaru CVTs built today for longevity? 200-400 thousand miles??

Hey could you clarify if I understand the WRX's CVT properly?
Launch control: Performed by stopping, holding brakes, pressing the accelerator, then releasing the breaks; truly continuously variable, optimal power RPM held.
    Manual drive:
Intelligent mode: Truly continuously variable under 40% acceleration, stepped 'gears' above
Sport mode: Truly continuously variable when under 30% acceleration, stepped 'gears' above
Sport sharp mode: Stepped gear ratios
[when stepped 'gears' are invoked, 'up-shifting' is not automatic, however 'down-shifting' is]
Standard drive: [??? What happens here? Truly continuously variable transmission set to low RPMs regardless of acceleration?]
[using the paddles at any time invokes stepped 'gears' temporarily]
This is confusing as fuck. Lol. Even if the above is correct, it doesn't answer all questions. The transmission system is so simple, but it has such a complex computer program on top...
Seems to me that a CVT should employ RPM steps instead of this wildly complicated mess of steps designed to reproduce the behavior of gears. It could be as simple as 3 settings- one low RPM setting for economy, one mid for sporty fun, and one high for optimal power. I understand why they'd want the car to have more punch if someone hits the gas, but they could just add a similar temporary adjustment, in this case to drive mode, kicking it into the next one of the three.

      @murmsuniversalrobotics3938 Před měsícem

@@ziyuzhao5943in the old CVT, new one is stronger. COBB provides OTS for stage 2. You can get away with 320/320 without much risk unless you launch it all the time, which would hurt it regardless. With the cooler currently in the SPT the Japanese were running 295/295 in their STI and wilderness edition outback and Crosstrek both can tow 3500 which speaks to torque and the amount of stress you can give it.
