    Great test! Ive had a discussion with another person who made a video testing the harbor freight 4400i and he stated it would not run his 15k a/c and inverters like that one wont start a 15k without a soft start. I said many vids show other wise. I had mentioned this unit but the 4500 version. I own the dual fuel 4500 of this. Good to see yours started the 15k with out a soft start. If you have a chance to test the harbor freight 4400i that would be great. Again great test vids!

    • @rickbraden4272

      A soft start will make your gen run longer because of much less surge each time the compressor starts. I have a 32' 5th wheel with 2 acts with a soft start on each. I have an older eu2000i & can start my 13.5 k btu ac with one eu2000i in eco mode. That says alot about soft starts.

    I just picked up the same generator, I went with the model without Electric Start or CO (Champion 200992). I use mine mostly for emergency storm outages which are rare and I want the less components to fail, it spends most its time in storage. I replaced the spark plug with the NGK BPR6ES as per the owners manual, I am surprised how out of spec the factory spark plug was it measured .021, it barely fit onto my gap tester. Manual calls for .0.028-0.031. It ran good out of the box, but even smoother with the NGK spark plug gapped to .030.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 2 lety +1

      Yea I wonder if they are using other plugs due to supply issues maybe. Most always seem to take a ngk or torch but yea I always check the gap. Old school that way

      Best to get a generator plug installed and you can also do the multiple breaker unit that way you power the items you want since these are 120volt generators.

    Great review! You have to leave the battery on to use the remote start, I wonder how long it lasts with the button turned on. Like, leaving the battery on all night while camping, in case you want to start the generator first thing in the morning.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 2 lety +3

      Yes switch needs to stay on to use remote. And when the switch is on it would probably last maybe 2weeks give or take before it drained it enough to where it wouldn’t start.
      So if used frequently leave it on. If not for a few days switch off

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 2 lety

      I have contacted them but o don’t think it does exactly what you think but I am curious how it would react with a smaller generator unit. It’s supposed to protect against power surges and voltage drops adding a small boost to protect items in your Rv. So it helps with both verses a normal surge protection device only protects against a power surge.

    Great Review. I ended up buying this as my first generator. I read there is a 5 hour break-in period. Did you do this and did you do it with the generator under load? Any tips in this area very much appreciated. Thanks!

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 2 lety +6

      No I don’t use that process. I have built a lot of engines for racing bikes and skis and once a builder we don’t follow any of that especially on low compression lawn mower engines.
      We normally would have engines broke in and ready to race in 20 mins or less. If you had a problem sometimes you get 2 mins to see if it runs and then to the line. Sometimes running engines the whole season that way lol.
      I do heat cycles…..several
      Start engine, warm up for 2 mins…
      Add small load… slowly increase to full and back down with in a couple mins period to idle for a min and shut off.
      Let rest for a while then redo two or 3 more times and done.
      I’ll change the oil after the first or second run. Then after I’m done. You buy a gallon of oil and you can change the oil several times because they don’t hold any lol.
      But that’s my method, it’s worked for years for me. Everyone who reads or does this is at your own risk. Follow the instructions for warranty assurance.
      👍🏼😁

      This particular model is not dual fuel.
      But the dual fuel model has a switch on front that you choose which fuel source you want to use. And only one fuel supply will run at a time.

      Does the fob have a light..? I can’t remember if mine did. If it does and no light I would get and new batt. Or make sure the fob doesn’t have one of those plastic covers or something that is in the battery to keep it from draining. You see that a lot in new devices. A little plastic sheet in between battery and contact. If not get ahold of customer service

    First time here, and also a first time fuel generator user. One question (from a newbie). I purchased a Champion to use for emergencies to power a portable 8,000BTU air conditioner and/or 5 cu ft min-freezer. The owner's manual says that this is a floating neutral generator and that to prevent electric shock, it needs to be 'grounded' using a copper rod, etc. Is that necessary, and did you ground yours? Thanks for your awesome video!

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 5 dny

      No that is nothing more than a liability clause. No body grounds portable inverter generators. Plus the ground rod would need to be 5-6ft minimum to do anything pending soil and moisture.
      Use it and have fun and just don’t run it over 75% constantly non stop. If you are always at the load step up to a larger size

      I haven’t got to look at the bigger power horse but correct it was previously powered by loncin and could still be. The new champion is powered by the popular rato engineering engine same as Wen and many other brands.

      Wow interesting. Well this can happen to where they put the wires in the wrong lugs on the plug. This even happened to some of the Ecoflow delta pro units.
      So get a meter on the plug and check to make sure that’s the problem. Negative on the ground and positive on the lower left. That’s the hot line. If your meter shows a negative then it’s reversed for sure and needs to be switched.
      If no negative shows up the something else is going on.
      Unfortunately things happen.
      Wiring for that unit should be ground up top. Black or load on bottom left, and neutral on bottom right. Unless it’s a newer model and it changed, so if the ground is on the bottom, then the upper right is your positive.

    Pretty sucky that the 30A outlet isn't a locking style, and that it's not tri-fuel. People more often have an NG hookup than a huge stockpile of LP. Not that I'd rather have just NG capability...but it can't be that difficult or expensive to just include NG functionality as well.

      It was on eco if I remember but that won’t effect overall performance except for tough loads on and off. So when running a air compressor or ac unit on and off best to have it with eco off then turn it on to let throttle adjust as loads come and go.
      Eco just allows I to idle way down when loads are minimal to none

      Honestly both very close to the same. The 4500 is nice slightly more compact and like slight and if I remember both run a 212cc rato engine but would need to double check. The powerhorse is just a pinch quieter at low and maybe mid range levels but equal up top.
      Hard to go wrong with either except I find champion seems to getting better feedback and customer scores then powerhorse from northern tool.

      @johnnysweekends  Před 3 lety +1

      Typically most of these types of generators have a floating neutral. And most the time are used in applications that have a grounded neutral like houses or recreational vehicles. So one is not need and from the reading I have done when you add a ground wire you now have a shock hazard. So per manual it is not advised except when paralleled.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před rokem

      Depends on the size of the AC and are you running anything else or just that only. Is it super hot like 105 and above or more like 85-95 but hotter temps create more load so you’ll burn a pinch more fuel..
      What altitude??

      @@johnnysweekends around 6000 ft and 80 to 90 degrees and 15000 btu. Just wondering if you can run just the ac for 5 or 6 hours on a tank.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před rokem

      Well at that altitude you’ll need a jet kit. And you have lost about 18-20% power at that altitude give or take.
      So you will burn more gas. Maybe dual fuel could be better option but I would say fuel usage up 10-15% or so from normal.

    Out of the three whats your favorite Westinghouse, champion or the predator.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 3 lety +2

      Ahh man that’s tough because of a few factors…..
      Predator pros…..
      Has a good reliability report….is one of the quietest around, is a awesome deal when you can use the super coupon but I hear that has gone completely. Decent size fuel tank for long run times.
      And it’s ability to handle full load and even a lot more and just keep running. Rated at 25 amps but will run 28 for …. Well idk never waited around long enough to find out. Held 30 amps for over 5 mins and didn’t shut down or struggle but I shut it down.
      Cons….. lame way to move with small wheels
      Would like a better handle to move around
      No Rv plug
      No remote start
      No fuel shut off
      Would like a drain hose for oil changes.
      Now a lot of cons are fixable with mods. But other goodies options are things you get with say the Westinghouse..
      Westinghouse pros…..
      Has battery charger hook up
      Nice wheels
      Remote start
      Fuel shut for storage
      Digital readout
      Nice carrying handle which I like and don’t like
      Pretty darn quiet
      Decent fuel tank.
      Has the largest cc engine of the 3 at 224cc
      Cons….unknown reliability
      Odd motor that I don’t see in generators but that could be changing as there are alot… and I do mean alot and most are the same.
      Heaviest of the 3 by about 3-4 pounds
      No reports back from viewers of good or bad or customer service.
      Lame service door makes oil changes not ideal so I would change it up a little.
      Champion pros…
      Excellent customer service and warranty at least that’s what viewers say. So far the most people talk about champion more then any other brand excluding Honda and Yamaha.
      Reliable rato engine which is popular in a lot of brands.
      Remote start
      Rv plug
      Nice handle
      Good wheels
      Digital readout
      Lithium battery
      Easy service
      Cons…..
      No fuel shut off
      No auto choke but it is electric auto with a push button, kinda weird.
      And…. Well idk.
      So overall the Westinghouse house kinda wins for load ability for the bigger engine . The handle, how quiet, features like remote start and a fuel shut off and large fuel cell.
      Even though predator really has a good reputation for the price and everything you get well the Westinghouse which is the same as the onan 4500 kinda wins.
      Unless something happens during my video that I didn’t see.

I have a 2018 Smart EQ and am looking for innovative ways of charging this car..and thought that a portable generator/inverter would do the trick, but it turns out getting 30 amps at 240 volts from a generator isnt going to happen with anything close to being portable..

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Před 2 lety

      lol yup your correct. Any smaller unit like this that is closed frame inverter is gonna be 120 volt. Once you get to 240 they are normally about 7500 watts open frame and 7000 closed like on the Honda or the powerhorse from northern tool, but they are big, heavy and expansive.
