Knowing Nintendo, most we can expect is a way to play a retro collection on your phone only if you are paying for the service. I already am paying for the family expansion pack and it feels really underwhelming at times, as in they own the rights to so many games and they have no excuse to just drop them so slowly.
Like seriously, pokémon games are some of the most pirated games ever, even if you want to sell the newer versions, do you really think they wouldn't make up for the difference with the number of people who would pay for being able to play the Gameboy to Gameboy advance games being able to play them online, trade them with friends or just being able to move them to newer games? the best way to beat piracy is by making things easy to get to
when netflix was the only streaming service around, there wasn't really a need to go elsewhere if its right there after paying a fee
same thing with spotify, why pirate music now if you can just go listen to it in a few seconds
so in a way this might reduce a majority of game emulation if the library is big, even though majority of emulator players are superfans anyway

This would definitely be a smart business decision. Would they gain my respect by doing this? Mmm.... nah..
The problem for me personally is two-fold:
    1) Strictly speaking, I am NOT a mobile/handheld gamer. I prefer a large screen for my games.
    2) I would much prefer gaming on PC these days, and I mainly buy my games on Steam. The only time I actually prefer using consoles is when it's circa 6th/7th generation or older.
On top of that, I highly disagree with Nintendo's business decisions. I think making me pay a subscription to play their old games from the 90's, with no way of buying them for any other platform other than Nintendo hardware, is ludicrous. I fully understand that's how they've always been, but that's the stance I've grown to obtain.

It would be smarter for Nintendo to developer their own smartphone with its own operating system (Not an android or iphone), thats similar to the Galaxy Fold but with a stylus like the S24 Ultra, and that can literally go from a smartphone that turns into a 3ds. Then if they had their own app store with every single GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, NES, SNES, & 64 games which you could buy separately or pay a yearly subscription for. As long as it had the majority of all the common apps that iphone and android phones have, I'd totally trade in my phone for one of those. Especially if it came with their own version of the joycons but built for the phone that you can slide on the sides and then use a cloud service that you could link to the Nintendo Switch 2 and play Switch & Switch 2 games on it! As well as cross stream and play the games on the phone, but stream them TOO the Switch 2 as well. I would pay flagship prices for that phone easy. It would literally be an ALL-IN-ONE ----- Smartphone, tablet, heldheld game console, & regular game console!

I have thought about this for a long time. They already made an app to make nintendo switch online voice chatt possible. If that app acted as a gateway to the retro game library on NSO, that would give people who dont even have a nintendo switch a reason to pay for the subscribtion service. I am sure that many non fans would see the value in being able to play ocarina of time on their phones and tablets. (Legally😉)

Ok before I hear John's guess at 6:21, my guess is, just assume the absolute worst. They're done with their games being ripped and emulated, it's full on stream only, you buy a device, it has a available, a subscription to the games, or you can purchase individual digital only games, and by that, you have them in your account for continuous use, for a 1 time fee. The fee is $60 per game, or $10 per month / $100 per year, and the system sells for $349. There you go.

Nintendo is a company that was a large part of my life as a child and adult. Though I love those memories, I will NEVER rent my own past. If you don’t have a physical copy of the game that works OFFLINE without verification software, you don’t OWN anything. The next best thing to a game on a cartridge is a ROM stored on an SD card. My collection, hard copied, backed up in triplicate, capable of playing off in the woods- THAT is the standard we should stand for. Nothing less. For the love of all that’s good and holy, STOP renting!!! Streaming is convenient but will kill our media!!!!!!

I love this idea and I would even say bring the actual eShop along with Nintendo Online to PC AND Mobile. But instead of relying on Steam, you have your Nintendo launcher and on mobile you a Nintendo app. And across these 3 different platforms, Switch whatever is next, PC and mobile, you can access your library and online service with cross play/save etc. This is something I hope Sony does as well especially if they have a handheld coming and they have their own launcher that hopefully becomes exclusive and they don’t have to rely on Steam. And if you’re a Nintendo fan who gets upset at this idc you’re an insecure baby just like Sony fans were when they first put their games on PC.

The mobile market is where Nintendo can shine. They already do! If they can make exclusive deals with movie studios with pretty much all control of what they create, I believe they could find a deal that would work with Apple. It's honestly a win-win for both. But Nin is weird, so we will see!

It’s possible that more is planned for their Nintendo online app to coincide with the launch of the next system and that working with Apple was the initial intent, but my guess is that after this move from Apple, Nintendo is disinterested.
I could see this shift in Apple policy being a result of some sort of deal that fell through with Nintendo
But I think Nintendo is too protective over their back catalogue. As of now, we don’t have GC, DS or any mainline Pokémon games on NSO. These would be the biggest draw to their service and they are too protective to put them on their own console.
The only draw to the Nintendo branded app over delta would come if they had all the same number of emulators, close to a full library of games, and made online functionality possible and included features like Pokémon home connectivity

I'll do you one better... What if Nintendo made phone/console. The reality is that the handheld market and mobile phone maket is converging. Phones companies are making a push to turn phones into legitimate gaming devices, and then you have consoles manufacturers trying to put their games on phones through streaming and the backbone. Nintendo would be wise to try to get ahead of the competition and find a way to compete with the mobile market (the second largest gaming market). There is a lot of growth potential there if done correctly. Imagine a dual screen Nintendo phone with traditional gaming controls on the bottom screen that plays console quality games.

I don’t see this working for anything but Game Boy and NES, since any system with shoulder buttons is terrible to play on a phone. It’s fine for an unofficial emulator because people expect a compromised experience, but requiring people to claw-grip a phone is just not something I think they’ll deem acceptable without a major shift in priorities. There’s a reason the phone games they have made are so extremely simplified.

In my personal opinion, I don't like that you need a subscription in order to play the games you want to play. If they bring their online subscription to phones, then they need to upgrade their emulator in order to compete with other ones we already have in the play store. I would also like if instead of a subscription, you can maybe buy the games separately with the gold or platinum points and make the emulator free to download. That way, people don't have to pay yearly and have the games that you actually want to play.

  • @dreadlord9257

I think it was obvious this is what is going to happen. I honestly thought when it launched originally that was how it worked and was disappointed to find it was only a Switch thing.
Nintendo will not survive on console exclusives alone now that Sony/Microsoft are realizing the benefits of cross-platform and indies are even hitting things like Netflix. Investors alone won't allow it.
Even from the all digital future, do you trust nintendo to keep their store front up given their track record? Why on earth would you buy an indie title on the switch that is available on any other digital store front?
The Switch found a niche in the handheld space. They are not the only player there anymore. Handheld pcs have been around for sometime, but were not nearly as mainstream as they are now with Steam, Asus, Lenovo (and Msft rumored) having entered the fray. Even the Switch 2 will not be nearly as successful unless it does something truly revolutionary. Even if you set aside emulation entirely, the Steam Deck does 99% of what the Switch does as most titles are third-party titles available on Steam/Epic. So unless you just have to play Mario and Zelda, you could comfortably skip Nintendo.
