It is a chip that is literally designed to control an individual's literal brain... The fact that he was able to resist it even in the slightest really is incredible.
As a reminder: a chip controlling your mind create a scenario within you where doing something is just something that you would do normally. Not like breathing, but like pushing a child out of the way of a car or something else along those lines wherein asking "why would you do that" is logically, emotionally, morally, and ethically wrong; not relating to disagreement, but in relation to "why wouldn't I?"
      - "The child would have died"
      - "The man was about to kill her"
      - "The Jedi betrayed us all"
Having the capability to add a level of conflict with this type of mindset, though normal for many people given a certain situation, would require a mind-controlling device to take a more drastic approach. Hypothetically speaking, the majority of clone officers, commanders, and otherwise soldiers didn't have this reaction because there was nothing present within them for such a reaction to occur. Rex has had to make over a dozen morally-conflicting decisions over his career; however, so has just about every other clone in the GAR. War is hell. That's all there is to it... but Rex and Ahsoka had something else... something that allowed for such conflicts to arrise, which made the chip itself resort to more brute force.
This is such an oddity because of 1. the personality of Rex 2. the relationship between him and Ahsoka, and 3. the fact that, out of all of the possible realities that can exist in the entire universe, it just so happened to occur with these two people in particular.
Personally, if it were any other Jedi, I don't believe Rex would have hesitated. The fact that the given order was made to affect Ahsoka created a unique, 1 in 1 million chance, scenario wherein such a hesitaton was able to occur. The combonation of such seemingly random individual factors allowed for an emotional divide to be present within Rex, which prevented the chip from just acting as it normally does (see my comparison above).
This type of hesitation cannot be anything other than such a practically impossible scenario, due to the fact that- were this type of scenario not practically impossible- the Caminoians would have developed a safe guard for this type of behavior without having the organic device resort to such a high level of brute force to override the emotional conflict within Rex.
And yes, to add clarification, I am, in fact, arguing that Rex's resistance was not a willing decision. It was a near-impossible occurance wherein such a high level of emotion had the ability to resist such an instinctual decision to the point wherein the chip itself was forced to physically override those instinctual emotions. Think mother-son bonds and the emotional connection between the two. Such a connection is instinctual by nature. If you installed a chip into the fetus of a woman and enabled it to force her to kill her kids in such an unwilling way (mental conditions not present, that type of thing IE "okay so just go kill them lol"), I can guarantee that this same type of scenario would occur, less the device be redesigned to accommodate for such emotional attachments.
And this is why this scenario was seemingly impossible. The Kaminoians had designed their soldiers to feel this type of connection between their brothers but not towards their superior officers. They were designed to treat their officers as just that: officers whose orders they had to obey and whose levels of respect went barely past that of a professional relationship. Rex's uniqueness (as a clone, as a commander, and as an individual) combined with the *chance* that he had to execute Ahsoka Tano AND the fact that such a seemingly impossible emotional bond had been developed between the two of them is what caused this type of reaction, and is what is lacking in just about every other instance of the execution of Order 66.
And as a final note, the clones who disobeyed order 66, as of current knowledge, did so *after* attempting to execute it. Rex is special because his level of conflict arose upon being *given* the order.

@@nicklopez3133 I actually thought so too, and I haven't seen Rebels either. I don't think there's anything wrong with Rex aging--his body is just different because he's a clone.
I thought a lot about whether he and ahsoka could end up together (even for a little while, bc Rex will die soon) and I think the only problem is that Rex doesn't have an identity besides being a good soldier, whereas Ahsoka has a range of life skills and better understanding of herself as a person and what she wants due to being expelled from the Jedi order.
Unless Rex underwent a similar type of exile/character development, I think he might just substitute Ahsoka for the Republic if they were ever in any relationship (he still thinks of her as "commander" even during season seven). But that's just my thoughts.

Rex had strong morals and a even stronger resolve. With all of this he still would follow orders all the way. Umbara thought Rex that good soldiers don't blindly follow orders, that you can't follow orders if you know they are wrong no matter who gave it. Thanks to 5s this knowledge was given to him. Rex was able to adapt and this allowed him to understand the true weight of the situation during order 66.

I presume official orders were being sent through the regular clone chain of command while Sideous was giving personal instructions. In TCW's finale, you can see two clones getting radio instructions after Rex has received the order, but he clearly isn't calling them. So a radio message was being passed among the lower ranks at the same time. I think in addition to all you said, Rex was able to use the logical loophole in Order 66 to “Kill the Jedi”. As Ahsoka was no longer a Jedi at this time, it allows a more free minded individual some leeway in how to interpret the order in this situation.

Nope, Jesse didn't accepted that loophole so did all the clones, Rex also tried to kill Ashoka when he was under complete control of the chip. Rex was able to resist it for 1 sec due to his independent personality and prior knowledge about the chip thanks to Fives.

I mean he probably couldn't really bear losing neither Ahsoka nor his clone brothers even if it meant for him to make a very hard choice between them. But for what I have to say about Rex's ordeal during Order 66, is that he knew how hard it would be for him to convince his soon-to-be fallen clone brothers about how they should follow orders even without the inhibitor chips, which sadly doesn't workout until it was too late.

In Clone Wars season six, episode one, when Rex, Fives, and Anakin were scouting out a droid base to find Tup, Fives comes up with an idea on how not to engage the battalion of droids, and still get to Tup. Rex then remarks, "That's why he's the ARC trooper." Yes, technically he was trained in ARC trooper tactics. however he is not a full fledged ARC trooper.

A very good assessment of the complex and nuanced elements factoring into Rex’s psychology. I see a lot of people questioning his choice to “murder” his brothers over letting them murder Ahsoka. “Aren’t their lives combined worth more than hers?” Perhaps. But what kind of life is that of a puppet? And what kind of moral trauma would they carry *if* they were ever freed? I’m not saying that his decision was cleanly the “right” one: however, I don’t believe anyone can claim they would have made the most morally upright decision had they been in the exact same set of circumstances. I mean, theoretically speaking he *could* have reset his DC-17’s to stun in the moments between groggily waking from brain surgery and firing in defense of Ahsoka. But how many people-including trained elite service members-can claim they would have had that thought process while waking from surgery? 🤔

Thus, giving enough time to have the chip removed such as Rex had done. We know due to massive numbers of clones the Jedi couldn't control hundreds, but what about a handful to even give a Jedi time to escape execution at the hands of the clone army?
