I am a Polestar 2 owner. I am fairly tall and well over 90kg in weight. There are so many complaints in reviews about the center console, but for me I find it great. It does not intrude and occupies a space that would otherwise be vacant anyway. What you do get is the feeling of being in the car rather than on the car. Fantastic, IMO.
Also, I have had my car for just over a year now. It cost me approx. $87K on the road. Dual motor 300kW unit with the 'plus' pack. I am not sure there is anything you can buy new that packs the same performance of my car for less money ... EV or ICE. When I got my car, an equivalent Tesla was closer to the $100k mark.
Then you have the looks ... the Polestar 2 looks a bit like a '60's muscle car (Dodge Challenger comes to mind) ... but I admit the 2024 update has watered down that look with the blank panel.
You have one very happy Polestar 2 owner here.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying your Polestar! You’re right that the seemingly wide stance gives it a solid appearance 💪
The big ones that will challenge this in power to price are going to be the MG4 Xpower (much more utilitarian) and BYD Seal performance (that will be a much more compelling alternative to the polestar). Can’t wait to see how good the Polestar 3, 4 etc are going to be as they specialise more with a dedicated ev platform
Hi Tom. Your comments about the acceleration are spot on. I test drove Tesla M3 & P2 and chose the P2. There were many reasons, but the smoothness of the drive was a significant factor. It felt to me like the Tesla's acceleration profile had been designed to impress new buyers with excessive acceleration at the start of the accelerator travel, whereas the Polestar was far smoother. Both pretty similar if you floored it. It really just felt like the Polestar was designed for the driver, whereas the Tesla was designed for the “wow, this is an EV and SO TECHY!” factor.
Even the regen braking features: Tesla has all-or-nothing, use one pedal drive or you lose out on efficiency, whereas the Polestar just blends the physical braking with the regen braking in all modes, only engaging the physical brakes when the regen isn’t enough for what you’re asking for.
Anyway, that is for the video, I find all your videos really informative. And yes, car purchasing is often about the heart.
Pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it and yes ultimately because we're human, as objective as we try to be with specs etc, it really is a subjective decision for most of us and how much we relate with a particular brand
Picked up my LRSM Polestar this week and it is superb. Beautiful handling, the best headlights on any car period I have driven, very comfortable, having a proper Google Interface you can ask anything. I drove from Shell Cove to Berowra waters and managed a phenomenal 13.1Kw/H and 13.9 home, combo coasting and maximum one pedal driving. The interior is quality. The Polestar is rock solid on the the road.In most respects yes it costs more but you get what you pay for. It has more of a cockpit feel than the open feeling in a Tesla. Feels more sports car like.
That’s quite good efficiency! The LRSM is where the sweet spot is for the 2024 models I feel
Hey Tom - you nailed it! It’s about the intangibilities and the P2 just spoke to me and just looks so damn cool and drives so well.
Polestar delivered my LRSM to my doorstep on KI on Thursday and I am so happy with it. I’ve done 500km already driving it around the Island this weekend.
The LRSM is more than enough power for me. I also went Pilot only as I wanted the tech and lights, but not the sunroof and heated back seats etc. I thought I might have missed the extra speakers, but the base stereo sounds great to me.
I will say Tesla’s pared back interior, stiff ride and lack of an instrument cluster was also a factor, and I’m not even that old - lol.
Polestar’s ethics, path forward and great customer service were also a big factors for me. 5 year maintenance and roadside is great too.
Extra ride height and fastback also great element for back roads and sleeping in the car on road trips etc.
Love the indicator thunk and pedestrian warning sounds too!
Amazing that they personally delivered your new car to Kangaroo Island! 🤩
I know it’s a small thing but I must admit I love a good door close which the Polestar has. The one pedal is chef’s kiss too: not too strong and not too light: it complements the refinements found in other parts of the car!
@@LudicrousFeed yup, I reckon the regen on the RWD has hit the sweet spot, more so than the FWD where could be a bit harsh especially as slow speed on dirt.
I tested out the Pixel lights last night driving back from the fireworks event and they were amazing too. I was in a long line of cars and so cool to see cars ahead being individually blocked out.
Also, many of our roads after the bushfires have been upgraded, or being upgraded, including with bold white lines and barriers, which is great for lane keeping.
In terms of the delivery, yes amazing, I regret now not going to film it coming off the ferry! I’m working on a video about my handover and first few days of ownership.
Oh - almost forget the Googles! As a full-on Google system, CZcams, CZcams Music, Maps and Play user already, it’s great having all that onboard. The map and range estimation seem excellent based on my brief usage.
Lot's of small reasons we chose our P2's over a model 3. The M3 is a really good car, especially if you want the car to do the driving for you. And I see that appeal. But as someone who hardly bothers with normal cruise control on my ICE car, it just wasn't important on an EV, for me. The other thing is when possible, we take the B roads rather than the freeway. It's just more fun and on those roads the Polestar with better brakes and dampers is just more of a drivers car. A model 3 performance may be quicker in a straight line but other than that the P2 is a more fun car to drive on a windy B road. I think the cars are different enough that they're not really for the same buyer. I'm not going to bag any other EV. They're all great in their own way and you get the one that speaks to you. The Polestar suits me. There are other choices for other people.
I actually really like the encapsulated feel of the Polestar over the Model 3. The finish is better and I don't think I'd like having no drivers display. The Polestar storage is farcical though. And I don't think the *smart zone* on the front is as pretty as the original grill. It isn't perfect by far. But after nearly two years I'm still grinning every time I drive it. Range has never been an issue. Or charging. With the right electricity plan it's basically free to fill up.
You make a good point about different cars that suit different needs/personalities. Specs on paper is one thing but the driver needs to feel happy with their decision ultimately
Hi Tom, it was fun to watch you driving round my neck of the woods in this vlog.
Glad you enjoyed it👍
Spot on Tom, we bought our P2 for many reasons but it being different from a Tesla was definitely one of them. After nine months ownership I still have a stupid grin on my face every time I sit in the driver's seat.
I can see why! 😃
Excellent points made. I'd buy a Polestar because it is Swedish. And I know a lot of people talk of where it is constructed and the parent company, but being a Volvo owner for years I know what Polestar is. And that is basically, the sporting arm of Volvo made into its own company that has transferred the finest former Volvo designers and engineers to that company. That's what Polestar is. So, it has the exact same qualities of Volvos but is enhanced by a more precise handling feel. They use a lot of the same materials. Through and through it is solid and feels expensive.
You're right. You just can't look at a bunch of numbers and conclude that another car is a better value because of those numbers. Spend more than a few minutes actually driving the car and it becomes clear this is an expensive brand, even in this "entry level" model. There are other brands and cars in the Geely Group that may share some components with the newer Polestars but they don't have the same finishing details or tuning or feel. They may be better for you or not as good, but they aren't the same. Polestar doesn't compete with Tesla. A lot of journalists want to force a competition and you don't. And thank you for that. You get what Polestar is about and a lot of people don't. So I feel Polestar could do better at communicating who and what they are.
Thanks! It’s taken me a long time but I think I’m starting to understand their brand philosophy 🙏
I’ve got 1 and I’m loving it every bit, and you’re right in every sense that ppl who buy a polestar just doesn’t want a Tesla.
Glad you’re loving it! I’m also glad I read the room 😅
Thank you for this blog, Tom. I’m looking at buying a Polestar 2 LR SM in the new year, as I like the inside and outside of the vehicle and its standard specs.
Pleasure. Having driven a few P2s, I feel the LRSM is the sweet spot in terms of value for this model
I agree, I see it as great value for money.
You hit the nail partially on the head with regards why would you buy one. Customer service is awesome, local service and repair through volvo centres is a plus. I never wanted a tesla, and honestly i'm still yet to experience a tesla (never even sat in one). A lot of people don't know what type of car it is when they see it, let alone pick it as an EV, but it gets lots of compliments on its look and build.
They do look very good
Hey Tom...I'm not a Tesla guy for many reasons, always have said that, but I do appreciate what they have done for the industry as a whole and without them we wouldn't have cars like this gorgeous Polestar 2 your reviewing for all of us. Tesla now as you say is the new generation Toyota Corolla/Camry seeing them everywhere. Although I can't afford a Polestar and the fact that the centre console is too big for me and never mind the transmission tunnel also there I still love the car and am always glad to see more on the road. It is the luxury & performance arm of Volvo really. I'm looking forward to when you can test drive the upcoming Polestar 3 having given us the initial look/first impressions video and of course also the Polestar 4 after that.
The Polestar 2 truly presents as a brilliant driving experience and for me with my average build, it is a very comfortable ride 👍
Can’t wait to test out the 3 and the 4 …!
We nearly bought the Polestar 2 earlier this year. Middle tunnel was definitely a deal breaker as well as the roof that doesn't close. The non-flush handles also was a deal breaker for us. I definitely do feel special driving around town. Great video and thanks for 'getting it' as a Tesla owner. Oh yeah, I really hate the annoying beeps and bongs on my car (Ioniq).
I worked out how to reduce the volume of the safety tones in the Polestar 2 after my Vlog. Much better now 😁
The middle tunnel houses batteries. If it had a flat floor, the floor would be higher and correspondingly the seats would need to be higher to allow under thigh support (that is why SUV style is what most EV's go for)
The "flush" door handles ??? are you kidding? Give me proper door handles any day. I will live with the 0.05% deficiency in range to have something that works properly all the time!
BTW I had both a Polestar 2 and an Ioniq 5 on order before I had driven either of them. After test driving there was no contest, the I5 order got cancelled.
@@colossus_g no problems yet for my handles. I like the look of the flush ones. There's a car for everyone :)
Nice video.. also want to mention that beautiful Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo (wagon) in that light blue colour at 0:57, also BMW iX at 7:50.. Haven't seen to many on sydney roads.
Oh yes good spotting!!
Great review! I do like the center console. It feels very sporty.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🙏
I am going out on a limb , but based some that I see in online forums Polestar people tend to be more times than not , people who dislike Tesla but who like EV's and have higher disposable income. It is akin to the BYD crowd that is growing they are just different then the tried and tested Tesla fan club.
Choice is a good thing and is reflection of a growing EV market 👍
It's true, I don't want a Tesla - but the main reason is I won't buy a car without a screen in front of the driver. I thought it was a mistake when I first saw one, and nothing I've seen has suggested I should change that feeling. I love cars, but don't enjoy driving, so anything that might cause unneeded distraction is a non-starter. The Polestar might be in the running when I come to change cars in a few years because of this.
I must say having owned a Tesla Model 3 for many years, it’s nice to have a binnacle screen sometimes
Even better with HUD
I have a LRDM Polestar 2 on the way and you nailed just why I like it so much. It is definitely a car that if you know, you know and if you don’t then it will quietly slip by.
As for the Tesla comparison, leaving aside the ubiquitousness of them and the hateful CEO, more than once I’ve mentioned the Polestar and Tesla owners have immediately responded with “you should have bought a Tesla”.
To which I usually respond that I have many reasons for not buying a Tesla, one of main ones being that I don’t want to be the kind of person who immediately jumps down another EV owners throat telling them they should have bought a Tesla.
Haha nice comeback
A correction. No Android Auto. Car has the Android Automotive OS to run the car but no Android Auto from your phone. Car play only.
My apologies yes thanks for the clarification
Thanks Tom - great review. Balanced and honest. I’m hoping to buy an EV next year, and the Polestar 2 (LRSM, most likely) is on my shortlist. And yes, I’m one of those who don’t want a Tesla (for numerous reasons), but really want to switch to an EV. Looking forward to test driving a Polestar and a couple of others in the new year.
Pleasure. IMHO the LRSM is probably the best option for road tripping, we certainly had a good experience with it on our SYD MEL SYD drive
Great Discussion and review/vlog Tom. It's true that people buy cars not just to take them from one place to another... Otherwise we would all be driving around in a white MG hatchback.
So true. I’ll try to explore the psychology of car purchasing a bit more in future vids
you know a car is luxury when its logo is being reflected in the glass roof 🤌. I drove the first gen P2 last year and it was lovely to drive, very serene environment, even the indicator sound was quite pleasant. an exclusive and well appointed alternative to the rather common model 3.
Certainly a smooth and comfortable ride
Even as a Tesla driver, I acknowledge that the Polestar 2 is more luxurious, and more comfortable than a Tesla. But just like you, I think the Tesla is a better value vehicle for me. I totally get why people would buy a Polestar, but I still can't get away from the value aspect of a Tesla.
So true … it’s hard to ignore the value that Tesla and BYD present 😁
I don't like that the shifter is on the center console. Plus, does the shifter need to be that big? And it looks like there is nowhere for your inboard arm to rest. The Model Y has a nice center console that I can rest my arm on. Also, I don't like gauges/displays that are behind the steering wheel anymore, now that I have a MY. You have to move & dodge your head around to see all of the cluster. P2 seems like a very nice vehicle, though.
Sometimes it’s nice to be able to shift something tactile 😅but yeah I think the Polestar 3 has the shift as a stalk which I agree is more efficient. The centre cluster has been designed well enough I think, no big head movements needed to see all of it, for me anyway. Again the Polestar 3 has a more compact binnacle 👍
Appreciate your honesty about value proposition vs a Tesla (and why some people still might buy a Polestar). Some of the Polestar owners I've spoken with also aren't the biggest fans of Elon Musk 😂
Agreed Ryan. It’s a major reason why many might turn to a Polestar or another brand
Yeh I get it, I loathe much of Musks recent political and business forays but the way I look at it no other CEO has his commitment to EVs and transitioning to renewable energy (indeed some are blatantly anti-EVs) and I'm sure if any other carmaker's CEO revealed their everyday thoughts and opinions in the same way Musk does I wouldn't be a fan either. There is a lot more to a carmaker and it's products than it's CEO IMO.
As much as I understand wanting to be different. I still don't think the car is worth the extra money. The centre screen is laggy feels outdated, the transmission tunnel is a big deal breaker and that 1 cup holder?(!)
I have a model 3 but I do appreciate other brands like BYD/MG. I would rather wait for more dedicated EV platforms to be released, and also see what developments have evolved in the software.
There are definitely compromises in the Polestar 2 but at least you’re purchasing from a brand that’s actually serious about BEV and that is worth something
They are very expensive and they have started to discount 2023 RWD models by $3500. Let’s be honest here Polestar has no lineage. This is just Geely whacking a brand on it with a big premium. But each to their own.
@@LudicrousFeed the polestar 3 I saw in Melbourne looks like a big step up.
I have test drove the P2 and could not take anymore who says the driver position is tight seriously anymore. There is sooooo much room
It can feel claustrophobic for some
Hired a Polestar 2 from Hertz earlier this year and I can't recommend this car enough. If I had the money I would buy one.
Yeah it’s gorgeous
Polestar doesn't want to be a top seller? Theyll succeed on that front asking $115K for that thing.
I think Polestar would lose its appeal if it ever became the no.1 seller lol
It has all the option packs. Not many would be ordered like this one
@@LudicrousFeed I was actually looking for this very comment! You read my mind 😂. Anyway, a happy Tesla Model 3 owner here.
@@SS-yw7vo sure but when this is more expensive than not only the model 3 but also the model Y performance, it’s a hard sell given the relative lack of practicality. At least this one feels more special but this price relegates it more to a niche product, as evidenced by the P2’s poor resale value (at least on the pre refresh model)
@@Clove_Parmawhat poor re sale values do they get?
Can't justify spending over $45k more for the Polestar when the Seal has more going for it.
Of course there's the Tesla after that.
The luxury to be able to justify spending extra not to look like everyone else right!
I was watching Morning Wars on Apple TV+ and I saw this same car that Cory was driving Alex in to his mother’s home as the Beach Boys Kokomo was playing the other week.
Oh nice! Good to see EVs hitting mainstream content
The new Model 3 Highland LR with acceleration boost is a touch over $80k, faster, better tech. $35k more for a ‘luxury’ Chinese vehicle? I can’t see why they sell so few.
It’s the perception that the Polestar is of European design and heritage … from Volvo lineage anyway
Interesting to hear your comments about 'cost' and 'value' etc & tned to agree personally when it comes to shopping for overpriced expensive cars. However, there is certainly something to be said for the luxury car sector (and even below) when it is more about aesthetics or the intangible rather then contant rabbitting on only about price - and which seem to be the defining characteristic of the AU EV sector, early days perhaps?
Otherwise, some want more than this and price is not the only factor when thinking about materials, comfort, ride quality, cabin noise etc etc. Standout friends cars in this sector fo rme include:
BMW iX Drive 50, wow. Ditio the curent spate of Volvo EVs & some numbers have traded up fro a Tesla likely for obvious reasons. The Lexus 450e sounds like a dog on paper, maybe doesn't have the range it should, by my god, does it drive well and it is so beautiful inside. Ditto the Jag iPace.
Current stand out fo me: The Genesis GV60. Maybe you might consider taking this up in the future, a little more bling & luxury might be nice to investigate?
Agree with your comments that we may need to move beyond price and specs now that the EV market is maturing in Aus and start discussing materials and design to complement the tech. Agree the GV60 is a beautiful car and I enjoyed my earlier experience: 2023 GENESIS GV60 ELECTRIC SUV AUSTRALIA WALKAROUND & FIRST TEST DRIVE
czcams.com/video/o6pKgVduMaQ/video.html
They look very nice in black, but the price, the console, screen and that it shares a platform with an ICE vehicle irks me. It wouldn’t move me away from a Tesla when I decide to upgrade my 2022 M3LR.
Left leg hitting the centre console is a deal breaker. It's very uncomfortable for the $$$ you pay.
Deal breaker for many unfortunately
My LR model 3 with the 3k update beats this comfortably (3.9sec 0-100), you can pick one up in inventory for $72k (VIC without rebates)
This thing is just way too expensive, cabin space is tight and storage is low as well.
Do like the styling of the polestars but it’s all they have going for them besides not being a Tesla, the price ain’t worth it for most but each their own.
For sure and we’re thankful that Tesla exists for those who scrutinise the specs and value the storage space 👍
That too much. Rather get the middle spec ev9 for the similar price.
Yes but that’s a completely different segment of the market
One big disappointment for me is the NMC battery
I agree. I’d be hard pressed to buy an EV that’s NMC/NCA rather than LFP … and that includes Tesla 3/Y LR/P
Thanks for this comment. I am really struggling with auto manufactures using nmc. I have preordered a M3 LR 2024 and debate whether its the right choice due to the nmc battery. @@LudicrousFeed
@@LudicrousFeed congrats on you Seal purchase.... I heard the Song L is now out.... it looks brilliant!! a mini-me Lambo Urus
@@fatdoi003 Thanks! I’m sure someone at Lambo is shuddering with your comment 😆
@@LudicrousFeed well BYD design chief is previous Audi, Lambo, Alfa design head as well.... that's why new BYD looks much better than older gen
Even when the Model 3 Performance was available it was 10k less than what the Polestar 2 Performance is and annihilates it in performance and tech. That and the supercharger advantage (which even with some being expanded to non Tesla vehicles its well worth it) the Tesla is a no brainer. I cant see 10k extra value with this.
Another reason to buy a Polestar is that you suffer from the Woke mind virus and hate Elon. Haha.
