I love all of the buttons that you have made so far on this channel. And your point of not putting the buttons in the washing machine is so true. Before today I didn't even realise that I need to think if the buttons on my garments are washable 😮

Thank you! Most are, I think we are living in a boring time for buttons on the whole! But sometimes if they have a nice finish, that can be chipped away in a washing machine, or stones and sparkly bits fall out. Fancier buttons tend to be on coats, which aren't usually thrown into a washing machine.

@@GinaBSilkworks The Dorset buttons in one of your tutorials, can they be washed? Washing machine might be rough, wouldn't it?

If you use a washable ring and washable thread, yes. Ensure everything is well secured, and be careful of harsh detergents (which can cause rings to discolour, though this is rare - don't use iron, it will rust). Ring buttons using metal rings came into being for shirts and the like - body linens - so were washed. It is often stated that the reason the Dorsets moved to metal rings (as opposed to earlier bone, raised types), was that they could withstand going through a mangle!
It's not a bad idea to was on lower temps.
If in doubt, sew a button using the final materials onto a facecloth / washcloth. Put it into the machine using whatever you would expect for the garment - and test it. I find the drier can be harsher with fine cotton threads - they go too soft and fluffy!
