- This video is an updated version of my old video - taking on board some of the comments I've received over the years. These include more close-ups, stronger colours, work larger. I've added more tips - hints on changing colours and adding thread for instance.

I've worked two buttons in this video, the traditional Dorset Crosswheel (also known as a cartwheel) and another from my book (Dorset Ring Buttons) known as a pinwheel. They are fairly different techniques, so worth watching if you enjoy button making!
For extra information, I've used the following in this video:

…that moment when you go to Subscribe to the channel and you discover that you already did… woohoo! Thank you for sharing this hand-made knowledge with the modern world. ❤
Oh thank you!
Thanks for the updated Dorset button tutorial. It is excellent. Those original Dorset buttons, so tiny! Also thanks for sharing the history.
Thank you, I'm glad you found it useful
Oooh love the pinwheel! And so simple once you have the basic one down
Thank you so much for your brilliant tutorial Gina. I’ve done lots of Dorset buttons always the same basic spokes, never done a pinwheel. Out with my button tin, got to do it right now 😊 I need to get your book and a shuttle. Thank you again.
You are so welcome!
You can draw lines on your finger equal distance apart to space your spokes more even
Oh yes, that would probably work for a set on the same sized ring and the same number of spokes, wouldn't it? Neat idea
Thanks bunches Gina for making this awesome video and because of watching your video, I was able to make my 1st. Dorset Button, and tomorrow I will start on my pin wheel one🫶
Good camera work, well edited - hoorah for team silkworks! xxx
Thank you!! xx
Oh this was wonderful! I've put a couple of your button books on my Christmas wish list! I want to try all the patterns!
Thank you!
Hi from just south of Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Love how clearly and patiently you explain your craft.
Thank you
Love all the amazing ways you've shown me to make beautiful buttons. I've been searching for several months for the perfect buttons for a stranded colorwork cardigan I'm designing. and it never would have occurred to me to make them myself. Can't wait for the books I ordered to get here so I can start planning them out!
Thank you! Welcome to a new addiction ;)
Great tutorial! I hope to be able to get my spokes properly centered one of these days. Your kits and instructions have helped a lot.
Thank you - I am glad they have helped
Beautiful work! These buttons are my new obcession!
Thank you!
Thank you for a very clear tutorial.
Thank you for this great tutorial.
You're very welcome!
Thank you for a well done tutorial. This is all brand new to me. I'm hoping to be able to do this with a lightweight yarn rather than thread as I can't find buttons that I like or come close to matching a recently finished hand knit sweater. And if the yarn doesn't work then I can certainly match thread better than a button. And what a terrific addition to hand work the buttons as well. I look forward to also reviewing your other videos.
Yes - you absolutely can use yarns. They are perfect for sweaters, you can use fewer spokes if your yarn is thicker.
This is THOUROUGH directions and close up views. I might even try this! One thing worries me before I even start: Tension. Whenever I have to make a circle, I mess up and it starts curving inward and I can't flatten it out. What's the secret to keeping it 'just right'? Thanks Gina-B. [liked, subscribed - best wishes]
Thank you! Do you mean on the filling stitches? The first thing is to make sure the laid wraps/spokes are taut. The filling stitches then need to be made without pulling the spokes out. It really is a practice thing, you get the feel for it the more you do. I'd also say try smaller rings initially - there's less room for those spokes to move so confidence builds.
ah! Good information! Thanks @@GinaBSilkworks
Thanks for the video! Would love to see how to do a Mite Dorset button.
Thanks, I'll pop that onto the ideas list!
Is that shuttle the same as the tatting shuttle on your site? It looks nice and narrow.
No, these are our "Dorset Button Shuttles" - we designed them for button making and manufacture them in-house. You can find them here - www.ginabsilkworks.co.uk/dorset-button-shuttles
Thank you so much - I have ordered one.
thank you!
