  • In this video, I'm going to show you how to make this lovely needlework button that is inspired by a couple in my collection.
The originals probably date from the late 19th / early 20th century. It is always nice to see the same design used in different ways on vintage and antique buttons, so I'll also show you some other examples I've made using different materials.
    You'll need:
    A button mould (I've used our No 117 turned wood mould - 20mm) - www.ginabsilkworks.co.uk/butt...
    Fabric - I've used a medium/light weight linen
    Thread - I've used Wonderfil Spagetti - www.ginabsilkworks.co.uk/wond...
    basic sewing kit (needles, scissors)
I've also used our Button Template to measure out my fabric circle - www.ginabsilkworks.co.uk/butt...
(which I may have called a gauge.... )

Good instructions for one of the prettiest buttons in the Edwardian button world! You could spend at least one lifetime just exploring this one button! As for what else to see - I'd love to see a passementerie button - some of those old court costumes look as if they have patterned foil backgrounds with bouillon and sequin patterns on top.
All safe and well here - just normal old aches and pains. Trust all is well there and that Toby and the new machine have come to terms with each other. Hugs all around. x

Ooh, now that would be interesting, if I could get the purl fine enough. I've never seen any as fine as the couple that I own. But you are quite right, there's foil there.
We're fine, machine renovation on a little bit of hold due to work - it only need the black paint now so close!

I've watched every video you have and love them! I haven't yet made any of them because I didn't have a need for them. Well I recently started back knitting and all of a sudden it hit me, I want to make my own buttons for a handknit cardigan! I will wait until I decide on the yarn and style before making any of these button decisions but I am so excited now to be able to have this to add to my handmade makes! Thank you for all you do! 💙🤩

Oh that's great! Yorkshires and Dorsets work especially well on knitted garments.

Hi Gina, I've been trying to work the pinwheel variation and the snowflake. Having lots of trouble with them - although I've finally worked out HOW to do the needlework (just not executing it very well). So I'd love a video on those! Trying to do lots of different needlework buttons for the quarterly challenge. I was very interested to see the spokes being laid under the fabric at the back. I do have a lot of trouble getting them even and getting them to stay put. So that was interesting. Thanks so much! (Jenni)

Thanks for the feedback Jenni! Some of those stitches are incredibly fiddly, I'll add that to the list . Stitching through at the back will keep them straight in use too, so a nice thing to see.

Thank you for another wonderful tutorial, Gina! Now wondering how this would look on the larger button molds using one of the small Liberty floral fabrics.

These 3 might help you - a fabric ball button, a fabric toggle button, and a bottle top button (a bit of recycling in this one too) -
