And don't buy from any game where skins and micro transactions are the main thing. Or have scummy tactics like limited time to purchase items and basically no way to earn free things.
But there are games which are made for fun and then the in game purchases come. Like helldivers 2. You can get a decent amount of premium currency by just playing the game. But the game is so good that buying stuff and supporting a game which has a way better system feels good.
Another relatively new game is the Finals. And it's a FPS and has a store. But the game is just fundamentally fun. And I've earned so much free stuff from just playing and doing quests.
And there are no time exclusive premium items. There are event exclusive items. But all of those are free. The battle pass is the only time exclusive thing.

I actually JUST bought a mattress from a, "going out of business" sale, but the owner, name, and model of the business isn't changing at all. What IS changing is their distributor. All of the major manufacturers don't cross-sell in the same physical location which is why Sleep Number doesn't carry Sealy, or Serta with Stearns and Foster (may be wrong about specific brands). The "out of business" is basically them clearing out stock and basically re-opening with entirely different stock. Definitely a bit scummy, but it's also technically true... They are basically mattress dealerships.
It'd be like a Ford dealership "going out of business" only to have the exact same owner and crew reopen a Toyota dealership in the same location. Both can be named, "Motor Park Sam's" and change nothing visually except for the branded adverts.

The problem is some of these microtransactions (lootboxes/gacha in particular) are just gambling. It inflicts all the same social ills that gambling does. It's an addiction, and people who are weak to it, end up spending all their money on things they do not need, and will even neglect their rent and food to keep playing the addiction.

they great part about Helldivers 2 is that you can earn super credits on your VERY FIRST mission. Chances are while you grind out one warbond (basicly other equipment and cosmetics) by doing missions, a good squad of find everything will get you SC on every mission you do while you'll need to do several just for one part of that warbond.
At no point do you have to buy SC unless you want everything unlocked off the bat and even then, its kinda a bad thing if you do.

A lot of people will still resist of course, but the more normal it is, and the more necessary it feels to get the most out of a game, the more people will be sucked in. Especially young people.

Before I ever played Fortnite, I swore to never spend any money on the game. I just wanted to play with friends, but they ended up bullying me for not having a skin, so I bought the "cheapest" £4 skin pack.
If you play a lot of Fortnite, you can work your way through the battle pass, where you can unlock limited time cosmetics. Every 3 months, all your progress is reset, and there is a new battle pass to work through. The only catch is that while free players can unlock the skins but cannot use them. And if you do not buy the battle pass during the 3 months "season", you can never ever unlock those skins again. Just before the reset, I ended up buying the battle pass because I'd spent 3 months working for those skins and I did not want to miss out.
3 years later, I can so clearly see how I was manipulated into spending money using incredibly unethical tactics, AND I cannot refund any of my digital skins.

I'm the type of guy Luke mentioned. I've had a lot of restrictions on my spendings as a child. No consoles other than a handheld Tetris machine and a Famiclone an I was never allowed to have any phone that was over $100, which always left me with envy towars my peers. The time I've started to have my own pay checks pretty much lines up with the time Android started seriously spreading, then a few years later I landed in a job that paid way more money that I was ever taught to handle. So I can't handle money, and now I have everything I was never allowed to have: High end gaming PC, Switch, PS5 and everything I need for them. And I can't even count how much money I've wasted on virtual goods.

    • @ForOne814

I was given pretty much everything as a child, to the point that it's my parents that were suggesting that they should get me a new phone and I refused, because I didn't need or want a new one. I also asked to be given money as birthday gifts, because I could accumulate decent sums to buy cool stuff. So I did a lot of research on what I actually wanted, and through that learned how to spend money. I also made a lot of money off of CSGO gambling back when I was 14, when it was a new thing. My mom used to let me play slot machines, they were everywhere when I was little, before the regulations were introduced, so I also learned how to gamble correctly. The most crucial thing I learned is to never bet what I'm not willing to lose. And also to never play slots, those are boring anyway, roulette is way more fun and sports betting is way more profitable.

It’s very important to teach self control with micro transactions. I was very susceptible to it and had spent a few thousand in the last decade between Clash of Clans, Fortnite, and Destiny 2. I could have easily had built another beast of a computer with that money. Those were dark times indeed, luckily I have mostly regained my senses of control over the desire for instant gratification.
My sister started playing Fortnite a couple of months ago. To incentivize self control I have clearly told her that I would only be buying her first battle pass. She will only receive the in game currency from that pass. She can choose to save it to buy the next battle pass and continue getting in-game items, or she can squander it and wait till a birthday many months away. She still makes poor decisions on “cheap” items, but she has learned to control herself enough that she can still get the next pass. A friend’s mom had asked my mom if my sister would like some more in-game currency since they had an extra card, and I told her to turn them down. It would just have messed with the self control curriculum I had set.

The biggest problem I can see is that if this anywhere near somewhat successful it’s going to set the precedent for other companies to follow suit. Gaming should be about fun, not let’s shove these items in your face so you and all your friends feel like they should buy said item. Some micro transactions aren’t bad per se, but as a whole something that was just a way to improve profits, became a way to make profits. Battle passes, 20 dollar skins, and in some cases actual pay to win. Its ruined games that could have been good. I feel that something that costs more than 5$ is no longer micro transactions. 20-25$ cosmetics for a game that cost 70. Just a little over 1/3 the price for a cosmetic, it’s stupidly insane, but it will never stop because people keep buying them. The only way to make change is when a vast majority of the gaming community band together and actually work together to either, stop them or cause there to be a limit on how much a single item can cost.

the way it works is that each season you can get up to 300 v bucks by doing quests. If you save up through 3-4 seasons you can get the battle pass for 950 v bucks, and if you complete that battle pass you end up getting your original v bucks back, thus you can get next seasons battle pass.
