I bought a Steam Deck immediately when you could pre-order one and use it all the time. I also have access to mess around with a Legion Go at work and wouldn't ever consider trading the Deck for one. Valve nailed the size, weight, and ergonomics. Ironically, they're also able to provide a more seamless experience of running Windows games than a device running actual Windows, because they have more control than Lenovo ever could. On the Go you have to mess around with a bunch of more or less janky settings panels to get good performance and battery life, which basically ends up turning all the impressive specs into a complete waste of money.

I think the reason Valve isn't releasing SteamOS on its own MIGHT be because of Nvidia's shortcomings on Linux. Especially with something called Wayland. For non-Linux people, it's basically a graphical backend that the entirety of the Linux community is **slowly** transitioning towards. Due to Nvidia having spotty compatibility with certain features within Wayland, (I'm skipping a lot of details here because it gets VERY inside baseball) but I can imagine Valve wants to wait until Nvidia gets off its ass and finally fixes compatibility. It makes sense that they want to make sure the experience is as absolutely seamless as possible on both AMD and Nvidia cards. Thankfully this is actually happening soon! The Nvidia update is supposed to happen sometime around early June so I would like to think that Valve will work out their own OS and build those systems before they fully release a desktop version of SteamOS. I know I'll be making a few videos whenever it drops!
So the Desktop SteamOS might be closer than we think!

Fortunately for all of us, Gabe seems to have a pretty great idea of how to run a company so that it provides the very best experience for the customers. The problem with publicly traded companies in my opinion, is that they are run to provide the best experience for the shareholders, which causes the actual customers to have a worse experience/product.

So the Steam Deck has allowed me to keep the vast majority of my library with me. I also partitioned the drive to run windows so I could get a no compromises Epic Game Store experience on it (I spent 5 weeks trying to get the kingdom hearts series running on the linux side and just couldn't do it). But even so, that is a pro for the Steam Deck. It is customizable enough and user friendly enough that I can modify it like a PC. Steam deck does NOT have a limited library. You can run any windows game, emulate Android, or emulate other consoles. The limitation you speak of is specifically referring to CERTAIN anti cheat games, which you shouldn't be playing on a handheld console ANYWAY, because there's no way you can play competitively vs desktop users even if it worked. Also, there is a big problem with x86 handheld battery life, storage limitations because games are 100+GB, most alternatives do not have track pads, Hall effect joysticks, not enough RAM (16 is dated), variable refresh rate, and steam deck still has the superior software experience. Android handhelds are actually better competition against steam deck than the knock off x86 handhelds. This is especially true with Windows emulation working on ARM, and the only problem there is not having native android steam support, unless you're running Linux or windows for arm. Yeah, arm is going to be the next handheld revolution, because nobody is competing on the x86 front. ROG ALLYX? Do I trust it? No. Is it priced competitively? No. So it's steam deck or some upcoming arm system.

Honkai Star Rail is not playable on Linux last I checked. People have been banned for it, but not for Genshin yet. Apex Legends has had 3 updates now where they messed up the anti-cheat. This is supposed to be a Steam Deck Verified game yet people have been banned for it.
One of the appeals of the Steam Deck is its ability to be a PC. If people wanted to play with the Steam Deck in a dock with mouse and keyboard, Steam sells the dock for it. The argument of "shouldn't be playing competitive games on Steam Deck" rings hollow to me. This is putting aside that it is your device, and if you wanted to play competitive shooters on it you should be able to.
Now I don't play these games on Steam Deck, but the reality is, compared to other windows handhelds it literally is limited. Other Windows handhelds can emulate and play the anti-cheat games. It literally has a larger library.

I get where Linus is coming from, but my counter point is that the Steam Deck is amazing for the same reason that the Switch is. Yes there are handheld PCs that runs faster, but they also HAVE to have better specs because there are multiple layers of cruft sucking away at the performance. With the Steam Deck I can boot it up and play probably 70% of my current game library without hassle and without background programs taking away from the performance. As Linus said, this is not an apples to apples comparison, but honestly I don't WANT a worse laptop when I'm on the go, I want an amazing handheld that allows me to play PC games without having to be under the thumb of the big three of console makers when they make stupid decisions. On top of all of this SteamOS is built on the Linux kernel so it is much easier to "hack" for lack of a better term. It's also WAY more solid that most PCs because it is stripped down. Take this all with a grain of salt though because I am not an online PvP gamer. But for my use case it does everything I need. The Steam Deck doesn't NEED to outperform the handheld PCs on the market because it is doing its own thing the same way the Switch is doing its own thing.

That's a big win for the steam deck but you can install windows on the steam deck (if you really want to) anyway and support is good now while also having a much longer battery life. Performance isn't worth getting the rog ally for as the sacrifice of battery, micro sd card slot (as it kills sd cards) and money. The steam deck oleds screen is better as well as its better colour accuracy and it being an oled. The extra resolution the rog ally has is pointless as it struggels to runs games at that resolution well and you usually have to turn it down in lots of games to 720p anyway. It is also hard to tell but still slightly noticeable going from 800p to 1080p on a 7 inch screen. The 90hz of the oled is enough as 60 - 90 hz is a big difference but 90 - 120hz has a smaller noticeable difference to your eyes but the screen on the rog ally is overspeced in all the wrong ways.

I love the Steam Deck. I practically use it every day or almost every day. When I leave the house, it’s usually my iPhone SE and Steam Deck that goes with me. While I do love my Vita slim and Switch Lite, I don’t always have the urge to play them.
Since getting the Steam Deck back in February, I gamed more these last three months than my previous 15 years. I already have over 120 hours playing Final Fantasy VII Remake. Add another 30 hours for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and another 40 hours for Shenmue III.
I’m currently trying to platinum FF7 Remake but I heard recently from a CZcamsr that trying to plat Rebirth is a nightmare! Not worth it he said. He said it took him over 200 hours to plat Rebirth while Remake was only around 70. And the level of difficulty goes way beyond hard mode and with tedious mini games.
Once I get Rebirth for Steam which could be by 2026, I will not attempt to go plat for it. I actually don’t believe getting plat for Remake is really worth it either. It’s to feed my ego. I didn’t grow up during the trophy era. Once I beat a game and saw the end credits, I was done with it. I don’t want to waste another 50 hours on that game.
Since I already have 56/63 achievements for FF7 Remake Intergrade, I might as well complete them all to get my first platinum trophy for any game. The six tasks I have left for getting plat on Remake…..
Hit every big box (Materia Mavern)
Complete hard mode for the base game
Complete hard mode for the DLC
    Beat Ultimate Weapon
    Beat Ultimate Weapon 2.0
    Beat Weiss
I will probably save Weiss and the Pride & Joy ones last. Still only have 11 of the 18 levels completed on hard mode for the base game. And none for Yuffie’s yet. After I’m done getting platinum for FF7RI, I may attempt to go plat for Shenmue III. I’m reading it’s easier and only takes about 30 hours to go plat.
Something about playing Final Fantasy VII and Shenmue games that I’m so familiar with, it’s like being at home and doing chores. The OG FF7 and Shenmue II on Dreamcast and Xbox are my top 2 favorite games of all-time. Their music has this great ambiance when playing them.
As disappointing of an ending and story that Shenmue III had, it might actually have the smoothest gameplay of the trilogy. The mini games are funner. No annoying walking on a catwalk/plank like in Shenmue II where if you fall, you need to completely go back to the start.
After I plat Shenmue III, I will probably play Uncharted 4 next. I still have hours and hours to play on the Deck. I’ll probably have over 1000 hours playing video games before the year is over if I already played 200 hours for it after three months. From 2008-2020, I doubt I accumulated 1000 hours from playing video games.
I usually play my Deck for about an hour or two almost daily. Then sometimes more when I get home while it’s charging. It’s also great for watching Pluto TV if I’m too tired to play games. I’m trying to go plat on FF7RI but I’m doing so at a leisurely pace. No rush. I no longer have that OCD or huge ego to care if I go plat or not.
    *ROG* *Ally* *X*
What do you think of it? Just seems like new hardware for CZcamsrs to talk about but is it really that exciting? My excitement actually comes from getting the first Ally used for $250 like I did for my 512 GB LCDeck. I’m determined to get an Ally with Z1 Extreme for only $250. But of course, I still hate Asus. Never had a great experience with that Taiwanese company.
I’m aware how people’s microSD cards gets ruined from the Ally but I have no intention putting one in it. I’ll only be using the internal storage and don’t plan putting a lot of games on it. I actually prefer the Legion Go but if I see an Ally for dirt cheap, I’ll get it. It’s smaller too. It is overkill to own a Deck and Ally, but since the Deck might be too weak for FF16, I might as well get an Ally if it’s dirt cheap. And I do need a Windows device again to do certain things I can’t on Linux.
Ally X seems to be a battery life upgrade which is needed as who wants to keep playing AAA games for only one hour? But I wonder how much? It might go up in price like the Deck OLED did. While a used original Ally will have a fire sale on OfferUp and can be bought for under $300 this summer after the Ally X gets released. Wait after June 2 to see last year’s Ally selling for dirt cheap on OfferUp. Just make sure you’re getting the Z1 Extreme.
I honestly don’t know if getting a Windows PC handheld with Z1 Extreme is worth it though? Yeah, it’s more powerful than any version of the Steam Deck, but it’s not like the PS5 era has brought a ton of games for us to play. I feel AAA titles died with the PS4. The first AAA title was the OG FF7. Then AAA titles died after the FF7 remakes. Who has time to wait that long for AAA titles?
FF7 Rebirth’s sales are disappointing for a few reasons. This game should have NOT been a PS5 exclusive in the first place. More people owned a PS4 in 2020 than a PS5 in 2024. But what softens that argument is Rebirth is selling less than FF16 from last year. So it’s not solely because it’s a PS5 exclusive.
The other reason is maybe it is tough to market a direct sequel and not everyone loved Remake with some divisive narrative choices they made? I’m currently trying to plat Remake on the Deck and it can be quite tedious running through hallways. Hence, why I still prefer the OG. It flowed better as a game and it’s easier to pick up and play without thinking too hard. Can spam the buttons.
Remake’s battle system can be quite fun but I can understand some fans from the OG who didn’t like Remake not liking it’s very complicated nature dealing with stagger and ATB fill ups. A lot of gamers who played the OG have become more casual with games. They got families to raise. No time figuring out some complex battle system.
It’s a shame too because I really do want to play Rebirth but refuse to buy a PS5. My favorite part from the OG was Disc 2 when the characters finally left Midgar. But what can we do? Square made a few errors like making it a PS5 exclusive and some gameplay/narrative changes that didn’t sit well for some OG fans.
Is having the power close to the base PlayStation 5 while on the go even worth it anymore if this 9th generation has killed AAA titles for good? What’s the point? Those AAA titles are getting way too expensive like making a blockbuster movie and they take too long to wait on them.
There’s this overstatement that we’re experiencing a crash. No, we are not. The video game industry is far larger than it was back in 1983 when the Atari 2600 dominated homes. The future for console gaming are PC handhelds that can also be docked to a TV or monitor. We’re not heading into a crash. It’s not all gloom and doom. No games will be buried into a New Mexico desert. We own too many games we would probably never ever play.
It’s 2024 and I haven’t enjoyed playing video games this much since my PS1 days. Forget PS2, my PS1 days from 1996-2002 when I beat dozens of PS1 games. While gamers have complained about the lack of good games from this gen, we are currently living in the greatest era of portables/handhelds. We’ve come a long way since the Game & Watch and Tiger Electronics handhelds prior to Game Boy.

I have been absolutely LOVING stuff like Dave the Diver, Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, Hades and also AAA games like Elden Ring have been simply incredible to be able to play handheld. I’m so satisfied with my purchase in under a month’s time that it’s kind of crazy. It’s rare for a consumer product to be able to do that. The more you want to play away from a power socket, on battery the more you have to turn down settings till you are basically back in Steam Deck territory regarding FPS and detail setting.

The Steam Deck is the most popular handheld PC in the world. It’s foundation is Steam OS, which it’s Linux kernel gave massive boom to Linux gaming and even got Windows to join in on Linux gaming through their Microsoft Azure that was made in 2010 that’s also Linux-based. Microsoft is pushing Xbox into Windows. Sony, with their new 2 presidents, needs to push more Playstation Studio games onto other platforms with SqE to keep afloat.
Sony is working with Western Studios and SIE to keep Playstation alive after their Hell Divers 2 wack with their previous Presidents. It’s not looking very well and hopefully they undo those mistakes and get their games into more platforms as they are also jumping into AI.

We love ya Linus, but it shows that all you do is run benchmarks and reviews as opposed to actually using a mobile PC for gaming on the go. Steam Deck is hands down the best experience for 90% of people over any windows handheld. It boots in a fraction of the time, has quick resume, and most importantly, it doesn't waste half an hour installing shitty Windows updates every other week you power it on, which interferes with using it as a grab and go device, nor does a windows update randomly break something important like the on screen keyboard or audio drivers. Ohh, and it gets 50% better battery life in many titles, and 100% more when playing 2d indie games. The deck is significantly more comfortable to hold for hours on end and to use as a controller, is infinitely more customizable, and I can't remember the last time I ran into a game in my steam library of 800 that didn't boot up perfectly fine on the deck with no tweaking required. Even getting stuff from the epic store running is a breeze with the 3rd party launcher tool.
So no, I won't take a ROG ally to get 30% better framerate in cyberpunk if it means dealing with windows on a device that lacks a keyboard, watching defender/anti-malware rape the CPU at idle every 30 minutes, deal with bugs that require plugging a keyboard in regularly, or get half the battery life when all I want to do is play stardew valley or slay the spire with mods or run my favorite GameCube or PS3 games on emulation.

I agree that the Steam Deck is in a league of its own and sort of a different category to Windows handhelds, but it should still be compared tbh.

It all depends on where your priorities lie with what you want out of a handheld honestly.

My guess is that the reason Steam OS hasn't released for all PCs is because Nvidia has slowly been introducing better support for Linux and the community drivers have been making great strides too. Valve probably doesn't want to release Steam OS to the masses until the Nvidia experience on Linux is good since currently it's pretty awful. It's getting better every day though!

  • @Creepus_Explodus
    @Creepus_Explodus Před 13 dny +1

Others have already mentioned it, but the most likely reason why SteamOS isn't on the desktop yet is Nvidia. Valve want the OS to just work on any PC you put it on, but as long as Nvidia support depends on their proprietary driver, that simply cannot be possible. They don't want to ship the driver to not complicate licensing, but the open source driver isn't suitable for daily use yet.
Valve are also major contributors to both the AMD, and now the upcoming open source Nvidia drivers, they are quite busy on that front.
