Yankees centerfielders. That's the Yankees dynasty. 100 years ago, Babe Ruth made his debut in centerfield for the Yankees, setting them in motion for the Yankees 27 World Series in 100 years. Since then, legends like Earle Combs of the Murderer's Row Yankees, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Rickey Henderson, Bernie Williams, and more have player centerfield for the Bronx Bombers. Many don't realize that Rickey played center during the Rickey Henderson Yankees years, as he's commonly thought of as a left fielder.
In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, I'll be looking at the 1920 Yankees all the way up to the 2020 Yankees, and we'll look to the future in the form of the Jasson Dominguez Yankees which could give New York success in center for years to come. In truth, some of the MLB best centerfielders wore pinstripes, but the Yankees also had plenty of great performances from athletes who simply played their part. This includes guys like Bobby Murcer and Curtis Granderson. Hopefully you'll enjoy this video about how Yankees CF transformed MLB.

Duke Snider, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Andruw Jones, Curtis Granderson as only CFs to have back to back 40 homer seasons in MLB history? I'm pretty sure Ken Griffey Jr did it at least once right?

You're correct! I thought I had put Griffey in there, but apparently I only had him on the .800 OPS / 2k hit list. The Kid went back-to-back in 1993-94, and also had five straight seasons from 1996-2000. I will pin this comment so everyone can see it.

Don't know how I forgot to give a 👍 yesterday. Hundred-year connection any of us could have seen - but you brought it out.
I'm a Cardinals fan and don't much care for the Yankees - but I have to give them their due. It's not just deep pockets that fueled their success. Come on! Lou Gehrig was a New Yorker and Reggie Jackson admired the organization at a distance.
Of course they have the money but they have a history of getting the right people at the right time. Not just players: front office talent, management, scouts, development personnel. Just a smart organization that usually knows how to capitalize on its opportunities. Sure, they let Willie McGee get away - but how often has that happened?
Baseball wouldn't be Baseball without the Yankees....

As a kid growing up a half hour from the city in the 90s, I thought Bernie Williams was their top star at the time. I don't know what that means, but to 8-year-old Yankee-hating me, he was that dude.

@@RetepAdam As an adult in the 1990s and watching a lot of baseball, I think Bernie was the 2nd best player on the team , behind Rivera. He batted in the #4 slot, as a switch hitter who played great defense. I don't know the saber metrics stuff, but I personally saw Bernie get to line drives in the alley that looked like sure extra base hits and rob guys all the time. his speed was a serious defensive advantage. Another interesting fact, in the 2003 WS loss by the Yankees, Bernie led all players in avg, HR and RBI (wasn't a lot of runs, but still Bernie led both teams)

Mariano was awesome at his job, but being a one inning closer has minimal value no matter how great you are. It's like being a dominant FG kicker.
That's why Mariano has a lower WAR than Dave Stieb despite his WAR surpassing all other one inning closers by a mile.
