On July 23, 2019, the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees played an instant classic. The Twins Yankees July 23 highlights flooded the internet. There was talk about it being the MLB best game ever, or at least the MLB game of the year 2019. So we'll definitely be seeing some Yankees vs Twins highlights.
This episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, isn't trying to make this a competition. Instead, we're going to celebrate some of the amazing occurrences in this Twins Yankees game. The game featured heroics from Didi Gregorius, who destroys the Minnesota Twins. In fact, we'll examine some insane Didi Gregorius vs Twins stats. Miguel Sano showed up as well, striking twice with the classic Miguel Sano home run.
Some players profiled include Nelson Cruz, Luis Arraez, Mitch Garver, Adam Ottavino, Aroldis Chapman, Gleyber Torres, Mike Tauchman, and Gio Urshela, but we'll also be examining the teams as a whole. 2019 played host to a Yankees Twins home run chase, culminating in a Twins single season home run record.
The game ends, SPOILER ALERT (although you probably know this) with a tremendous Aaron Hicks catch, preventing Max Kepler from walking the game off. And thus concludes the beautiful epic matchup.

As a twins fan... why have you done this to me?
I was trying to forget....
I try to forget the Yankees even exist... the way they have owned my hometown 9 the past decade and a half... it's just not right...
hah!- yankees fan
Even though I'm a Twins fan I still look back at this game fondly
Danny Smith fam nobody likes you
I knew it was coming
Gregorius: **Signs with Phillies**
Therapist: "He can't hurt you no more..."
Twins fan: **Weeps**
Yup
Yep but now it’s us Yankees fan who are hurt that he is not with us anymore🥺
HOW THE FUCK DO YOU GIVE UP GREGORIUS. IM STILL UPSET BY IT
He has been mashing as well
Cant no more. Is that a double negative?
I’m a twins fan and boy is this break down amazing.... it hurts watching this game because we lost but what an absolute classic... glad Didi is in the NL now
Man that takes sone strength to watch us heat you and still appreciate ut
that game was insane couldnt have said it better lets hope didi never faces the twins in a big spot again
"Except for the part where the Yankees won, I personally don't care for that, but, good baseball nonetheless."
Has some very strong Jon Bois energy.
Him pausing for the hicks catch had rewinder energy
Jason Ganslaw this is a moment in history
Jason Ganslaw I thought I was the only one who remembers that
i feel like this whole channel is just "jon bois' baseball loving younger brother" energy lmao
As a Twins fan, I remember having the exact same reaction as you described when Kepler hit that. It felt like it was in slow motion and I thought. This is it. All this chaotic baseball is finally ending here. Either Hicks catches it and ends the game or he drops it and the Twins win. Very surreal moment.
Peter K I remember watching this game and having my heart ripped straight from my body. Even tho it wasn’t a “meaningful” game it was one of my worst feelings ever as a Minnesota sports fan. It’s up there but not quite above Walsh, 38-7, 09 NFC Championship, and losing to the Yankees all the time in the playoffs
Thanks to @Philliesfan1023 for today's video title. Comment on today's video with title ideas, for a chance to have your title featured in an upcoming video just like this.
I was at that game. I’ll never forget it. Even as a Twins fan I couldn’t be mad about it. It was probably the most exciting and exhausting game I had ever been to in my life.
Same here! I hate the Yankees so much but them beating us is one of the best baseball memories I have because of how electric the stadium was that night.
Sano and Cruz don’t even look like they’re trying to hit the ball hard, they just do
thats what i was thinking lmao
Cruz in freaking inhuman. I'm a life long Orioles fan. The worst decision the O's ever made was allowing Cruz to leave. They should paid him whatever he wanted. Hell, they did it for Chris Davis, which turned out to be the second worst decision they've ever made.
tim keefe had 19 WAR in 1883.
tim keefe had a 293 ERA+ in 1880
tim keefe has a career HR/9 of 0.1
he is the goat.
That ERA+ is FRAUDULENT AND YOU KNOW IT
Probably 100 of the top 100 career HR/9 pitchers played prior to 1920.
U can't really look at most pitching stats from that era (before 1920, "the dead ball era") the same way. Hell, b4 then the league leader in homeruns was usually in the mid teens somewhere, sometimes less than 10. There were only 3 seasons where someone hit over 20 HR's, with the record being 27.
I remember going to walmart and spending 2 hours there and missing the front half of the game. Then when I found out the Yankees were losing by 6, I just gave up on the it. Then I came back to check on it, and I watched the rest of the game with my heart in my throat.
We them boys
Sounds like all you did was skip the boring bits
We have a Yankees chat text thread in my family, and there’s almost always at least one of us who will do the heroic task of continuing to watch or listen to even potential blowouts. If a comeback starts brewing, that person will text everyone to say, ‘The game’s getting close now: you should turn it back on.’
I was the lucky one who kept that game on while my brothers and parents in other parts of the country stopped watching when it looked like a blowout and started doing other things. At that point, when you bring everyone back, you’re hoping for a win just so you don’t get grief for bringing them back to the fold for a game they’d already psychologically accepted as a loss. I received no complaints this night.
Can I be apart of your family lol
yeah me too
Nah, the best game ever was when Bartolo (EDIT: I meant Gorgeous Gargantuan, sorry @Foolish Baseball) hit his home run.

I'm glad you're excited even though (spoiler alert) they lose the game.
Foolish Baseball I know lol, it was still a really fun game to watch
Foolish Baseball I'm pretty sure this is just the second Twins reference I remember you making in your videos.
When half of the top 10 teams for ISO are from 2019...
the balls were juiced for sure.
Balanced leather breakfasts for them.
Crazy juice off.
How does a ball get “juiced” , what goes into that
@@mbdg6810 It could mean that the baseball is either having a more elastic collision were the bat is imparting more energy into the ball or it could mean the ball is slipperier in the air and does not slow down as much when travelling.
After some independent studies on the ball took place, people around the game came to the conclusion that the surface of the ball was changed to allow for further travel.
riotduckdotcom thanks for the info!
@@riotduckdotcom I heard they found a better way to make baseballs so now the core (the pill) is perfectly centered, which means less wobble, which means less air resistance, which means more tators. There were so many HR records shattered last year that it put the steroid era to shame. 1.40 HR's per game compared to just 1.17 during peak roid era. Of the top 20 teams that hit the most HR's in a season since 1961, 10 came in 2019 alone, including the top 4.
As a Yankees fan, I can safely say this game was easily one of the best I’ve ever seen!
I remember listening to this whole game on the radio. The definition of an emotional rollercoaster.
Gregorious is good. Really happy phillies got him this year.
I'm just glad he's not a Yankee anymore so I can also say that didi gregorious is the goddamn truth.
as a yankee fan i'm sad now
I’m just happy he went to the Phillies instead of Sox or Mets
He homered yesterday!
As a twins fan I’m happy
I don't follow baseball that closely day to day and had never heard of this game and had no idea what was going to happen and getting the whole story via this video was so satisfying. Like a better experience than I've ever had watching an actual game. I want a video like this for every good game.
Can you do a video on freddie Freeman? I don’t know if there is an interesting season but I just really like him.
“Inside Statcast’s most HANDSOME player”
I like that idea
League leader in Hugs Above Replacement

Welcome to the S tier.

Speaking of instant classic the Angels vs A’s yesterday
Game before that was nuts. Triple play, RBI Catcher’s interference. 8 home runs. Amazing
I actually wrote an essay about this game in my sports broadcasting class in college. I cited this video as one of the sources and got an A+ on the paper. Thanks, Bailey!
Are those all the signs of Chapman struggling I see?
GET OUT OF THE POOL
Every time I watch Chapman pitch I have to start looking for the signs
Cgrade Broccoli bro after watching the Yankees for a bit you can just tell when Chapman is gonna have one of those get out of the pool games
As a lifelong Twins fan, this was devastating
One of the quickest 15 minutes I’ve ever experienced
Yes!! I rewatched this game yesterday!!
Then you're perfectly prepared
As a twins fan I want to forget this game ever happened
Personally one of the best games I've ever watched was Nats vs Brewers in 2019 with the Brewers winning 15-14 in the 14th inning. There were so many comebacks, Yelich had such a crazy game and it all came down to no batters left on the bench and a pitcher having to pinch-hit. It even made the wild card win sweeter because the Nats played the Brewers 6 times that year and lost 4 of them.
That game was epic. Easily one of my top5 favorite games ever.
I was lucky enough to watch this game on TV at home. As a Yankees fan, it's the most memorable regular season game in recent or distant memory. Your video was amazing! Very happy to relive this one. Man, I love baseball.
9:01 that image will always haunt me

I remember watching this game. As an Astros fan, I was passively rooting for the Yankees. But like any true baseball fan, you smile and shake your head out of respect after a catch and a game like that. Moments like this are why I love this channel. Baseball isn’t chest pounding and cooler dumps. It’s wry smiles and tips of the hat.
It’s always a good day when Foolish BB uploads
Good!
Yeye
Great stuff as always. There's just one thing I wanted to point out which was the aftermath of this game. The Yankees finished the season with 103 wins, while the Twins finished with 101. Had the Twins won on Kepler's double, they would have finished with 102 wins each and an even head-to-head record of 3-3. This means that home-field advantage in the division series might have gone to the Twins (I'm not sure how this is calculated after a tied record) which could have dramatically shifted the tide of the series if the Twins had been able to play the first two games at home. Who knows though. I wonder what the expected batting average on that double was.
Sporcle that's what i was saying!
imagine the butterfly effect if Aaron Hicks had been one step to his left before the last play.
Interesting way to look at this loss
Hi, I know this is extremely late, but the Yankees would still have had home field.
The first tiebreaker after H2H is record within your own division. The Yankees went 54-22 against the AL East, and the Twins went 50-26 against the AL Central.
@@ThorHC11 I think it's who wins the season series
Oh man I loved that game. I've gone back to rewatch the last few innings like 3 times since then. Wonderful video, thank you!!!!!
I was at this game, as a twins fan it is probably tied for my favorite game I’ve ever been to. Even though the twins lost to the Yankees, it was so energetic and electric in that stadium that night until that catch by Aaron hicks.
This felt like a Jon Bois video and I’m not complaining
U know It's good when Folish BB uploads!!
yay!
i was there and it was one great game. i remember i almost missed it too. actually ended up on tv during it.

Man, I've rewatched this video, game highlights, and actually sat down and watched this game. Became a fan in 2020 and this game was definitely a part of that. Wonder what other games were near this level of amazing baseball and excitement.
im so happy you did a video on this game, Every couple of months I go back and watch the highlights of this game. So excited to see you recognizing it.
My only complaint with this channel is that I didn’t find it sooner.
My notification was 5 minutes late smh

That catch gave me literal chills
Gleyber Torres is my favorite player now because he wore a baby yoda hat in an interview the other day.
A baby yoda hat he wore, fear him the Orioles do

Huge yanks fan, I love watching and rewatching that play. (I’m not a bandwagon)
This video is a masterpiece. The visuals, stats, script, timing, comedy, and the way they intertwine with each other, is perfect. Amazing job, man!

I would love to see a Baseball Bits video on the team with the all-time worst WAR in a single season, or alternatively one on Jamie Moyer’s ageless career.
I would have to guess the 1899 Spiders were definitely up there (or down there) in terms of team WAR.
Foolish Baseball What if it was restricted to modern era? I would guess the Royals between 2004 and 2012 would have to be on there somewhere.
@@jr637-1 62 mets, 03 and 19 tigers (at least the hitters of the 19 tigers) 18 Orioles (If only for Chris Davis), the Phillies of the 20s and 30s, the 35 Braves, the 52 Pirates, and the 1916 Athletics come to mind. Really, there's a LOT of candidates.
@@FoolishBaseball (Tagging you for this part so you see it) a video on either the 1916 A's, and how they fell from the Elites in just two years to the worst winning percentage in modern history (or just on Connie Mack in general. Yeah, that sounds like a better idea), or a vid on the 1935 Braves, who I'd call the "Worst team ever with a true superstar" (said superstar being Wally Berger). This video was published on my birthday. Excellent work my friend. Go Yankees!
That was maybe your best video yet, I was riveted from the very beginning. Good work!
This reminds me of the Yankees/Red Sox game in England except there was more runs in the England series. I’d love a video on that best game ever.
It’s honestly amazing how much research you guys put into these videos. Like wow.
“Except that the Yankees won. Other than that, good baseball” couldn’t have said it better myself. I knew Hicks would catch it without seeing this game previously, because of course, but that dive, that was beautiful. Just outstanding.

Such a phenomenal story teller
It makes total sense that you'd make a video about this game. Watching it then was cool, but even as a Yankee fan, I had no clue about most of the intricacies of both teams. Great job!
Best game I’ve ever seen was August 1st, 2017. Red Sox vs Indians. Insane defensive plays, great pitchers who had horrible performances, home runs, a last inning rally kept alive by a dropped 3rd strike with 2 outs and much more other craziness.
I love watching videos and seeing some of my favorite Braves playoff heroes without expecting it
I remember watching this game live. Fell asleep at 12, woke up at 2 and it was still going on. It was crazy

Not even really a baseball person (being from Australia) but I love your vids just cause of the deep analysis and thought you put into them. Well done, love them
This is awesome. Thanks for redeeming a lot of the pain this Twins fan has felt about that game. Only relief I’ve had is that it was Aaron Hicks that did it to us.
This was definitely the best way to watch a 5 hour baseball game.
As a Twins fan, this game hurts my soul, but this was a great video. Amazing storytelling and pacing.
