      I was there in person for his complete game shut out last year. He is crazy to watch. He has had a few innings where he really struggled this year, but I suppose asking him to be god-tier every game is a little unreasonable.

    • @Ben-og9ff
      @Ben-og9ff Před 10 dny

      I had a breakdown from that graphic at the end.
      I’ll offer some constructive criticism:
      The main one - panning from right to left when introducing the graphic makes it hard to read in English.
      no title/poorly located title
      Arguably excessively ‘busy’ or cluttered (could have made the white points a bit smaller, just my opinion). Y axis label maybe too.

    • @the_indie_army
      @the_indie_army Před 24 dny +3

      Maybe it's just the way it was worded in the video by saying "first walk" but the career K/BB stat is simply the ratio of strikeouts to walks over the career. So Kirby throws 7.87 strikeouts per every walk. By saying "first walk" the implication is that he throws on average between 7-8 strikeouts in a game before he throws a walk. When in reality, it doesn't matter when the K or BB is thrown within a single game, or even over the course of the career for that matter. For example, If he gives up a walk at the start of a game but then goes on to throw eight strikeouts without any additional walks, his stat will still improve rather than decline.

When they announced his debut, I was elated and had to tell my dad about this dude that hammers the strike zone. He was brilliant and M’s fans have been blessed to watch him ever since. Great write-up on one of my favorite pitchers in the game right now. One small critique of the script: when the subject of a comparison is plural, you use 'fewer' rather than 'less'.

    Tommy Bond played before walks were 4 balls - at first they were 9, then 8, then 6 in the NL, but also at first batters could request "high" or "low" and if the pitcher didn't conform, it would be a ball. Nonetheless, to give up a walk in the 1870s NL was basically walking the same batter twice. Otoh, strikeouts were already at 3 strikes with the advent of modern base ball, and called strikes existed by 1858.

    Looking at his extended stats this year, his HR/9 is up by a tad (1.2 vs 1.0) while his BABIP and his Hard Hit % are lower but he's not getting anywhere near as many ground balls so it seems like he's just getting unlucky giving up a few more homers than he did last year and maybe some bloop liners that scored runs. I had no idea Kirby was that damn good. To do a cross sport comparison, which is the ONLY way to find this level of dominance is a stat, you have to look at Wayne Gretzky and his 894 goals 1,963 assists and 2,857 points. The next best player is Jaromír Jágr and his 766 Goals 1155 Assists for 1921 Points. That means that Jagr has fewer points then Gretzky has just assists alone Plot that on a similar sort of graph, and you'd see a similar result. IMO one of the highest honours any athlete can get is to be compared to Wayne Gretzky. he's called "The Great One" for a reason.
