This is from the movie Beaches. She sings it to her best friend from childhood who is dying.
And each time I see that movie, I cry like a baby... 🙂
From the Movie Beaches.. In 1990 my Sister was 29 when she passed away from Cardiomyopathy, the same disease Barbra Hershey's character succumbs to in the movie.. My best friend sang this song at her funeral and it still makes me cry every time i hear it. Thanks for reacting.

I'm sure we all feel that way about a particular person who has come into our life at some time. People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
That's why she was the very last guest on the Tonight Show. She sang One more for My Baby. Made Johnny Carson cry and won an Emmy for that performance. She's one of a kind!

I remember when she released this, even singing it in 8th grade chorus (1989/1990). Such a beautiful song to sing to a spouse or a parent...
I remember this coming out and didn't pay too much attention to it. A few months ago whilst recovering from Long Covid I ended up watching Beaches and the song was placed in context - now I can not hear it without tears flowing
Nobody's better live than Bette Midler, and nobody can touch your heart more deeply. She pretty much either makes me laugh my ass off or makes me cry every time I listen to her.

Wonderful reaction. This song always makes me cry. It reminds me of my dear sister (who was my best friend) and my kind and supportive dad, who I both lost a few years ago (only 2 months apart) 😢 Bette Midler is so amazing. Her voice is so calming and beautiful.
I love this. It makes me cry all the time, cause I remember the movie Beaches. It’s dedicated to her friend that died in the movie. She sings it to her friends daughter at a concert in the movie. Two girls from very different backgrounds who became best friends. Her friend was her strength. That’s why people are saying it will make you cry. WATCH THE MOVIE.

Thanks, Dereck! I have had the privilege to see Bette Midler in concert twice in Cleveland, the first time way back in the seventies. I was blown away both times. She is an absolutely fantastic performer and I am so thankful to have been able to see her in person. This particular song was one of my Mother's favorite songs, so I requested to have it played at her wake. I just knew she would have loved that. This song is so meaningful to me and I appreciate that you chose to react to it today.
I saw her but once in KC, Mo.
My mom passed away in 1989 when this song was new, and I had a friend sing it at my mom's funeral.

Indeed very sad song. It was featured in her film 'Beaches' which tells about the complicated friendship of two women (her and Barbara Hershey) throughout a life time. Sadly it ends tragically and the song is featured during that segment in which she expresses her feelings about her friend.
for me, her best performance ever was when a man loves a woman live (not when she was young), the quality of the video is bad but the perfromance is just amazing

Dereck, you have to watch Beaches. A beautiful and very touching movie about lifelong friendship. Then you'll understand why this song brings tears to so many people's eyes.
Hello Dereck,when i saw Bette Midler's video and heard the first few words and melody,i immediately had tears in my eyes.And partly crying.I thought my late husband would have liked this song at his funeral too. It's been 9 months now since.There are many songs that timeless.And move you deeply.This song is one of them.But i chose a different song for him.Thank you Dereck for your reaction!💝😄🐬

You have to watch beaches Barbra Hershey is the posh kid who while on holiday meets a kid at Coney Island who sings and taps with a stage mum they become lifelong friends.the you g Bette midler character is played by mayim balik from blossom and big bang theory.i think I saw her in blossom and then thought I've seen her before?! This film was it.
This performance was pretty close to the studio version just a couple of and libs.

You have never seen Beaches?
It's nice but I prefer Sheena Easton's version, which came out in 1982. I've always loved Sheena's beautiful, pure voice and she sang it with lots of emotion.
The audio would be more emotional if there were clips from the film in it. You need a whole box of tissues if you watch that.

His name was Jerry Blatt . He was a composer and lyricist and one of Bette’s best friends who passed away in 1989 .
