    ____
"Wind Beneath My Wings" (sometimes titled "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Hero") is a song written in 1982 by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley.[1]
The song was first recorded[2] by Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album he was recording. Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on Australian TV show Spicks and Specks, but stated it was not commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country and western style. Instead, Roger Whittaker recorded the song, as well as Sheena Easton and Lee Greenwood. The song appeared shortly thereafter in charted versions by Colleen Hewett (1982), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), and Gary Morris (1983).
The highest-charting version of the song to date was recorded in 1988 by singer and actress Bette Midler for the soundtrack to the film Beaches. This version was released as a single in early 1989, spent one week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in June 1989, and won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in February 1990. On October 24, 1991, Midler's single was also certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of one million copies in the United States. In 2004 Midler's version finished at No. 44 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. Perry Como recorded the song for his final studio album Today, released by RCA Records in 1987. Como wanted "Wind Beneath My Wings" released as a single, but RCA refused; Como was reportedly so angry he vowed to never record for RCA Records ever again.
In a 2002 UK poll, "Wind Beneath My Wings" was found to be the most-played song at British funerals.[3]

Bette is golden! Got her start in the 70s singing at a gay bathhouse in NYC with Barry Manilow playing piano.
She's a 3/4 EGOT...Oscar nominated but no wins. But she has won Golden Globes.
This song from movie she starred in called "Beaches" one of the greatest tear jerkers of all time lol.
She's fabulous and has an amazing catalog.
Love her cover of TLC's "Waterfalls".

Most people don’t know that this song is a remake. It was recorded by several artists from Sheena Easton to Lou Rawls to Gladys Knight and a few in between before it was finally presented to Bette Midler for the Beaches soundtrack. Bette was the one who made this song successful, taking it to number one and winning several Grammys.
One of my favorite Bette Midler songs is “From a distance.” It was her second biggest hit behind this song. Her third biggest hit was the song “The rose.”

She has been a star since 1972. She was a Lady Gaga in a way, she was funny, nasty, shocking, smart, a brilliant song interpreter, and could and does sing anything., Jazz, Rock, New Wave, Punk, R & B, American Standards, Motown, Ballads......anything. Her concerts are epic. I always tell Madonna fans (and I love Madonna) that Bette Midler was doing theatrical shows with comedy, dancing, performing background singers and dancers LONG before Madonna, but she didn't have the benefit of MTV or the most modern stage effects. Bette sings EVERY WORD of EVERY show LIVE, and in her prime, her energy level was even HIGHER than Madonna, and she did monologues, talked to the audience and was hysterically funny.. She could make you wet your pants laughing and in two seconds have you in tears. She is a national treasure, and she is making "Hocus Pocus 2".

Thank you for reacting to this. There are very few reactions to this online. This song should get a lot more attention...
To me is just the most beautiful "dedicated to..." song i ever heard, loved it since it's release in 89. Other people attempted to do their versions of this, but Bette's version is the best, bar none....
The only other singer that can do this as good as Bette and make me tear up is Morissette (Amon). I you never heard of her, definitely check her out, she is an amazing Filipino singer with the voice of an angel, the likes of which i've never seen in a long time, and yes... she is named after Alanis Morissette cause her father was a massive fan . She does a cover of this in one of her concerts, to her mother in the audience, on Mother's day.... She was crying her eyes out for about 2/3 of the song yet still pulled off an amazing performance.
I wouldn't be able to speak, let alone sing like that....

Bette Midler recorded this cover for the 1988 movie "Beaches," co-starring Bette (and a teenage Mayim Bialik as the young Bette's character) and Barbara Hershey. The first time I heard this beautiful song was from Sheena Easton's 1982 album called "Money, Madness and Music." Since Sheena's was the first version I ever heard, I tend to prefer it a little better. But Bette took the song to the top of the U.S. pop charts at No. 1 and made it her own, so her version is the most popular and well known. British singer Roger Whittaker also recorded it in 1982 for his album of the same name, and U.S. country singer Lee Greenwood recorded the song for his 1983 album "Somebody's Gonna Love You."

I associate this song with 9-11, but it was from a film originally. With the tragic events of 9-11, the nation had one big lump in the throat, as it were, and she managed to capture the mournful sentiments with an unforgettable delivery! THIS is how you do radio friendly sentimentality, with the real deep human feels. Beautiful subject matter for a song and a film. You must watch the movie it’s from, Beaches! Her comedy routines are still brilliant. Her legendary performances in the gay bathhouses in the 70s. Her brilliant acting in so many huge comedies and dramas. If you really wanna cry, watch her movie The Rose, loosely based on Janis Joplin’s life. And Bette’s stunning warm-toned voice will always give us the feels. Just BETTE. Jesus....I can hear my sister singing this song when she was 17 I n my head...she sounded just like Bette Midler when singing and the same with Karen Carpenter songs. She would have made it big if it wasn't for our horrible childhood and her lack of self confidence and I blame it on my mother. My Mother once said she will never do anything. And I thought because you still don't give her the self-confidence. Singing Ng is a rare quality and she had the voice of Karen Carpenter. So all of you, including you Empress should explore you're singing talents, please! And can I hear back from some of you and you're thoughts...take care.
