"Wind Beneath My Wings" (sometimes titled "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Hero") is a song written in 1982 by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley.[1]
The song was first recorded[2] by Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album he was recording. Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on Australian TV show Spicks and Specks, but stated it was not commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country and western style. Instead, Roger Whittaker recorded the song, as well as Sheena Easton and Lee Greenwood. The song appeared shortly thereafter in charted versions by Colleen Hewett (1982), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), and Gary Morris (1983).
The highest-charting version of the song to date was recorded in 1988 by singer and actress Bette Midler for the soundtrack to the film Beaches. This version was released as a single in early 1989, spent one week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in June 1989, and won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in February 1990. On October 24, 1991, Midler's single was also certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of one million copies in the United States. In 2004 Midler's version finished at No. 44 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. Perry Como recorded the song for his final studio album Today, released by RCA Records in 1987. Como wanted "Wind Beneath My Wings" released as a single, but RCA refused; Como was reportedly so angry he vowed to never record for RCA Records ever again.
In a 2002 UK poll, "Wind Beneath My Wings" was found to be the most-played song at British funerals.[3] - Hudba
Bette is one of the greatest singers ever, a true storyteller, enjoyed your reaction, bring more Bette to your listeners and for yourself!☮️❤️🙏
i'm not really a sentimental guy, but man this song gets me emotional.
First Streisand now Bette Midler?! You ARE the wind beneath my wings, Empress!
Exactly! I'm trying to tell ya!
perfect comment! love it!
"From A Distance" is another wonderful Bette Midler single.
✅noted
Listen to her song The Rose!!!!!!!
I agree 💯 her best song
@@darnell49 Ditto. Agree. And "what Darrell said!" Empress!
Bette is golden! Got her start in the 70s singing at a gay bathhouse in NYC with Barry Manilow playing piano.
She's a 3/4 EGOT...Oscar nominated but no wins. But she has won Golden Globes.
This song from movie she starred in called "Beaches" one of the greatest tear jerkers of all time lol.
She's fabulous and has an amazing catalog.
Love her cover of TLC's "Waterfalls".
She has two Tony awards, numerous Grammy Awards, a bunch of Golden Globes, and two Oscar Nominations. Almost en EGOT!!!
Such a powerful ballad. The background of this song & movie meaning tells the story. Taken to another level when she performed this after 9/11. She said that was most dfficult moment keeping it together, singing. Respect.
Oh yes... that 9/11 memorial performance she gave choked me up big time... and i'm not even American... 😥
Most people don’t know that this song is a remake. It was recorded by several artists from Sheena Easton to Lou Rawls to Gladys Knight and a few in between before it was finally presented to Bette Midler for the Beaches soundtrack. Bette was the one who made this song successful, taking it to number one and winning several Grammys.
One of my favorite Bette Midler songs is “From a distance.” It was her second biggest hit behind this song. Her third biggest hit was the song “The rose.”
You need to watch "Beaches" , it was the theme song to the movie, Bette starred in it as well as Barabara Hershey, a tear jerker about friendship.
"The Divine Miss M". So much power and feeling.
I had a friend sing this at my mother's funeral. The song was fairly new then. It was beautiful.
She has been a star since 1972. She was a Lady Gaga in a way, she was funny, nasty, shocking, smart, a brilliant song interpreter, and could and does sing anything., Jazz, Rock, New Wave, Punk, R & B, American Standards, Motown, Ballads......anything. Her concerts are epic. I always tell Madonna fans (and I love Madonna) that Bette Midler was doing theatrical shows with comedy, dancing, performing background singers and dancers LONG before Madonna, but she didn't have the benefit of MTV or the most modern stage effects. Bette sings EVERY WORD of EVERY show LIVE, and in her prime, her energy level was even HIGHER than Madonna, and she did monologues, talked to the audience and was hysterically funny.. She could make you wet your pants laughing and in two seconds have you in tears. She is a national treasure, and she is making "Hocus Pocus 2".
She did have some serious crazy energy!
This song got me crying like a baby...dang Empress...gimme some Kleenex! Wind Beneath My Wings always reminds me of my Grandma, it was played at her funeral. Such a beautiful and powerful song.
She's a good actress too. Mayim Bialik(Blossom) played as the younger Bette Middle character in the movie Beaches. She was named for Betty Davis. The Rose( movie & song) & From A Distance are two more of her tear jerking songs.
This lady has been my hero since I was a little baby human.
I’m so happy you’re checking this out. Also that hat is everything!
Bette’s “The Rose” is one of my ALL TIME FAV SONGS!!
well now you've got me all emotional too 🥲 you are doing amazing and love seeing you in flight Eagle/Empress. love to you and you are truly wonderful ❤️❤️😘😘❤️
And Empress needs to explore her singing talent!!!
I love Bette! A fiery performer who made you say: 😧 "Oh my God, what a beautiful song!" 😥 one minute and 😳 "WTF did she just say?" 😂 the next.
😂right!
This is an amazing song. And you are wearing the right top with an eagle 🦅 on it
Amazing reaction Empress! This song and the entire soundtrack from the movie "Beaches" holds a special place in my heart. I highly recommend watching "Beaches" from 1988 starring Bette and Barbara Hershey. If you do just make sure to bring tissues. It's a ride.
Yes 🙌🏻 A must watch and we gotta see a review for this. Even do a livestream so we can all watch and cry 😭 together
@@craigjb8740 YES. PLEASE.
I want to ad to my comment...my sister died at 38, hospitals fault. And never was able to explore her amazing singing voice. So all of you remember...you are #1 and don't let anybody tell you that you are not good enough and just always strive to be the best you can be...coming from a 57 yr of old man that has done nothing, lol.
😭omg! sooo sorry to hear that. thanks for sharing to us. i hope your sister is singing in heaven
Bette has some great tracks. But The Rose is sublime. Imo, one of the best ballads ever.
The movie Beaches was really good. Challenge: watch movie, then listen to this again with your headphones. Caution.. Keep a box of tissue next to you, even if your not usually a crier. When that keyboard kick in tho.. haha you'll see.
Thanks Empress, and love you too.
Thank you for reacting to this. There are very few reactions to this online. This song should get a lot more attention...
To me is just the most beautiful "dedicated to..." song i ever heard, loved it since it's release in 89. Other people attempted to do their versions of this, but Bette's version is the best, bar none....
The only other singer that can do this as good as Bette and make me tear up is Morissette (Amon). I you never heard of her, definitely check her out, she is an amazing Filipino singer with the voice of an angel, the likes of which i've never seen in a long time, and yes... she is named after Alanis Morissette cause her father was a massive fan . She does a cover of this in one of her concerts, to her mother in the audience, on Mother's day.... She was crying her eyes out for about 2/3 of the song yet still pulled off an amazing performance.
I wouldn't be able to speak, let alone sing like that....

😉
Wow thanks for the recommendation
@@EmpressReacts You're welcome. 😀
I became a fan of her recently, and i can't get enough of watching her sing. I never seen her miss a note, like ever.... And she can sing anything amazingly, weather it's her own songs or covers of other artists...
Beautiful comments Empress. Bless those that can express gratitude - an incredible piece of writing by Larry Henley & Jeff Silber. Few artists could have delivered it with more conviction.
RIP Momma😥🌹🙏🏽. It's been over 20 years and...well nuff said.
🙏❤
The Dance Mix of "To deserve you" is my all time favourite song. Thank you, Bette!
Ooo I wanna hear it
She nailed this!
Bette Midler at her best; "The Rose" soundtrack and movie loosely based on Janis Joplin. Amazing music, performances, and acting.
I love Bette's voice. This version and Eddie Levert from the O'Jays duet with his son Gerald from the group Levert, are my 😍
Empress you need to watch Beaches. Talk about a tearjerker!
Grammy Song of the Year 1990.
well deserved💯
My cousin played this at her sister’s wedding with a video montage…which when you listen to the lyrics is actually a bit insulting to use at your sibling’s wedding. 🤣 But yeah it’s a beautiful song, great late 80s ballad.
I"m just curious.....does anyone in this group ( I don't know ages) know Bette Midler's music BEFORE "The Rose" and "Beaches"? She had a very full career before those films. Just curious.
So beautiful
Empress..have u never heard this song? Omg Empress start listening to her!!
Bette Midler recorded this cover for the 1988 movie "Beaches," co-starring Bette (and a teenage Mayim Bialik as the young Bette's character) and Barbara Hershey. The first time I heard this beautiful song was from Sheena Easton's 1982 album called "Money, Madness and Music." Since Sheena's was the first version I ever heard, I tend to prefer it a little better. But Bette took the song to the top of the U.S. pop charts at No. 1 and made it her own, so her version is the most popular and well known. British singer Roger Whittaker also recorded it in 1982 for his album of the same name, and U.S. country singer Lee Greenwood recorded the song for his 1983 album "Somebody's Gonna Love You."
Sheena Easton recorded a version of this for her 1982 album Madness Money and Music - The first major artist to sing it before many others including Bette Midler who had a huge hit with it - A beautiful song
Now you must watch (and review please 😁🙏🏻) Beaches staring Bette. It’ll put the song in so much more context
such a beautiful song!
Uh oh. From Beaches. Going to cry. A movie about friendship.
She took it to church; or in her case, synagogue... ;)
😂
Beaches!!!😭😭
Yesssssssssss! U reacted to The Divine Miss M! I love me sum Bette like you love Olivia!!! Her discography is huge … check it.💕
I associate this song with 9-11, but it was from a film originally. With the tragic events of 9-11, the nation had one big lump in the throat, as it were, and she managed to capture the mournful sentiments with an unforgettable delivery! I don't know how she did it because we were all in tears.
Thanks to the patron who requested this one. It’s beautiful. I watched the movie “Beaches” over and over again and I believe still have it. This is a gorgeous friendship song and I’m so glad you loved it. 🥰
You have some of the greatest video reactions
Saw her, had terrible seats for $100.00..but glad I was able to take my sister before her tragic death.
Well now you have to watch the movie Beaches that features both Bette and this song, and is guaranteed to give you the feels
There's an eagle on your sweater Empress.
BETTE! 🦅You’re deep in diva territory now! This song was masssssive and so beautifully written (not written by Bette). THIS is how you do radio friendly sentimentality, with the real deep human feels. Beautiful subject matter for a song and a film. You must watch the movie it’s from, Beaches! Her comedy routines are still brilliant. Her legendary performances in the gay bathhouses in the 70s. Her brilliant acting in so many huge comedies and dramas. If you really wanna cry, watch her movie The Rose, loosely based on Janis Joplin’s life. And Bette’s stunning warm-toned voice will always give us the feels. Just BETTE. One of the most beloved gals to the gays💖
Pair this song with the sad scene in Beaches....no dry tissues
Need to watch Beaches to really get a feel for this sad song AND 9-11.
nobody should never touch this this is hers leave it alone
Great song and reaction. Check out Sonata Arctica doing this song.
Great song from Beaches the movie.
❤
Jesus....I can hear my sister singing this song when she was 17 I n my head...she sounded just like Bette Midler when singing and the same with Karen Carpenter songs. She would have made it big if it wasn't for our horrible childhood and her lack of self confidence and I blame it on my mother. My Mother once said she will never do anything. And I thought because you still don't give her the self-confidence. Singing Ng is a rare quality and she had the voice of Karen Carpenter. So all of you, including you Empress should explore you're singing talents, please! And can I hear back from some of you and you're thoughts...take care.
I hope you go watch Beaches after this! You're a film buff (it's no Bette Davis or Hitchcock but it will make you cry)!
Pleaseeee pleaseeee do bette midler the rose
Make sure to check out the Movie For the Boys! It’s awesome and showcases several upbeat 1930-40s standards and signature Bette ballads. Stuff Like that there czcams.com/video/9EuAh7TH_Ds/video.html and…….
✅noted
You should react or at least just watch her singing this at the 9/11 Memorial Yankee Stadium ❤️💔💔💔💔💔❤️
🤍🕊Beautiful 🤍🕊
You so jumpy!
