Dude! I went through the entire video wishing you had the sound of the car drifting, but no! You had to cover it with music and talk. What a waste. I am really curious to know how an EV drifting sounds like, and I bet other people want to watch that too.

Of course they do. I've been to a drag racing and they sound like you are ripping a sheet of paper. But drifting must be something different, with the tires making lots of noise and a little bit from the motors, very different than an ICE car drifting. I think it must sounds weirdly beautiful. Please release a bit of video without the music, would ya? We are curious!

Love this coverage. As a motor sports enthusiast, especially drifting, I was savagely disappointed not to get any actual audio of the M3 running by itself without that loud music track.

electric cars are the future on the roads. Just silent, no noise pollution and instant power when you touch the pedal. maximum power from zero to max. speed, without clutch and without different gears.

You could just delay the signals from the gas pedal to create delayed power ramp up like in ICE cars. I assume it's a canbus pedal so it's just a digital problem.

Finding myself thinking occasionally about a gas tank + combustion engine combo whose sole purpose is to feed an alternator that charges some lithium batteries, where these lithium batteries would be the main power source for maybe one, two, or four electric motors... [/thinking outloud]
I think a diesel generator would be better served for charging an ev vehicle. I'd like to see solar panel roof, hood, and trunk for charging the vehicle while sitting outside during work, etc.
So what would my range be if I build one of these?

Most intrensting is the way tesla induction motor work. Induction motor is only one I don't know that well. Thanks for information abaot that. Whis even more of that, and is it possibile to make somekind of induction motor at home, that would give somekind of power? I know the principal of it.

it's on evwest website since months. motor+axels+controller+throttle. all in one kit. 12k if i remember... you need just batteries and you are good to go with a 500hp electric car.

Hello, If i want to run an Ice cream cart and need to put a freezer on it, let us say it takes 150 watts 12V including the lights on the cart...I want to run the cart for atleast 10 hours.. what would you suggest on powering it? What inverter? What batteries? And what options of batteries or powering the cart would be much better cost wise?

My issue when I had this exact thought a while ago (Tesla in my old BMW M3 for drifting) was that the Tesla does not have a limited slip differential in it. They claim that their fancy traction control electronics allows the motor to control slip, but if you are connecting this to an aftermarket controller and drifting it how do you get smooth consistent drifts? I am guessing EV west is using this helical unit. www.evwest.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=475 I had one in my 350z but the stock M3 friction disc one is better. A carbon LSD in a Tesla drive unit might be the combination that makes me go electric.

I thought DC-motors are torquemonsters like a blown 572cui that revs not that high and AC-motors are more like turbo-charged 4-bangers...so how can that Tesla unit be as strong as the twin DC-unit???

But I think, people are mostly interested for cheap (reasonable) EV conversions that they can use as their daily driver. Investing 20K > is not really interesting.
Doing that for less than 10K (50-60 miles >), now that would be something.
I am still hoping someone will come up with that kind of proposition so that I can convert BMW e46 (3 series coupe) in an EV.

I thought DC-Motors got a lot more torque then AC-Motors - so how can teh car (now equipped with twin AC-Motors) be stronger then with twin 11"-DC-motors????

jehugarcia I see. Increase efficiency to squeeze out as much miles as possible. I guess the trade off is that the motor will degrade if it is over heated. How likely is it to suffer heat damage on a cross country road trip in the summer?

Wrong Not the Motor. People only know false rumors never actually figure out the real problem. The problem with Tesla was its Battery Power Distribution lines which were not cooled properly and overheating. It's kind of hard to cool yards of thick metal wires. Tesla fixed the problem by running lots straight, thin, low volume of Liquid Cooling at very high flow rates. EV West has an entirely different battery packaging which is easier to DIY Augment each module. Model 3 Track Mode does not overheat after 30 minutes of serious track racing. But it does weaken some peak power.

But I figured out that it's economical.
And read somewhere that for hatchbacks, FWD provides much more boot space inside cabin.
So they use that.

John...you know VW has a pants load of re-claimed (read defunct) Diesels up in Voctoriaville, CA.
It seems such a shame to let all those chassis, and rolling stock go to waste. I hope they are not going to shred them, especially since they already spent all that time, material and energy to make them. Spending extra resources to just trash them would be adding insult to injury.
Wouldn't it be neat if you and EV West could get a few out of there and see how difficult it would be to convert them to BEV? You know..breath new life in the the stink-pot ICE's they once were?

They could really shine by turning those sow's ears in to silk purses. Heck if I could he a few in hand I'd find a VC to back it. To VW accounting that might be negative assets. Why not spend all the money on coming up with a long range every day driver car for use poor people? It would be nice to have a sub 15k electric car but most likely never in my life time.

Blahblahblah Blah Batterys have limits and they are currently pretty much stuck in development.
The main problem is that people don't realize that a electric car needs tons of Lithium and Energy to get build.
And in short..... we don't have enough lithium on our planet and the energy It takes to build such a car is producing more pollution than driving a normal car for over 150.000 KM.
Thats wy normal electric cars will not live long and will get replaced with other technologys pretty soon.
I dont agree that the physical amount of lithium is the ultimate bottleneck - there are mines opening up all over the place. Its calculated to be as abundant in the earths crust as chlorine - which is more abundant than copper and zinc - essentially I dont think we are at risk of running out.
Rather I think the current limitations are manufacturing. Economies of scale (eg tesla megafactory and megafactories in China) should push the price down fairly dramatically and soon. Prices have already dropped hugely for lithium ion batteries.
I do agree though that it is not the most efficient means of powering an electric vehicle though and I agree that it will likely be superseded by a more economical alternative soon.
Blahblahblah Blah I do have some conections to the German car industry and they don't really develop much in terms of Lithium batteries.
They use it as a placeholder till they can mass manufacture other technology like hydrogen cells.
As for the lithium supply.....
Its nice that there are large amounts of it on our planet but it can't be mined (or at least not cost effective)
The problem is that they don't last long in daily use and another major problem is the electricity grid that won't handle it larger amounts of electric cars charging.
It is way more cost effective / cleaner / cheaper / faster to use Hydrogen.
