- Remember the name. It’s Fowl. #ArtemisFowl.
Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization-the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan-so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.
“Artemis Fowl” is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel, Adrian Scarborough and Miranda Raison, with Colin Farrell and Judi Dench. Kenneth Branagh, p.g.a. and Judy Hofflund, p.g.a. are producing with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers. Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl wrote the screenplay.
Disney’s “Artemis Fowl” opens in U.S. theaters on May 29, 2020.

Disney: How much can you Ruin Artemis?
Kenneth Branagh : Yes
Branagh is behind this?
@Caralena Lindberg And Dr. Frankenstein, and several Shakespeare characters, and Inspector Poirot...
Oh, did I mention he directed the first THOR movie?
I know, right? We hoped he'd do better than this...
He sucks when it comes to adaptation kids books like Cinderella and this.
I don’t know why my teachers all get mad when I don’t read the book; apparently billion dollar multinational corporations use Sparknotes too
This comment. 🤣
Heh that’s good... I like that a lot.
OH-
Lolz
this comparison is wildly unfair to sparknotes
You've got to be impressed by how Disney removed every element that made the books good with the precision of a neurosurgeon.

remind me about Harry Potter - books vs films
with the difference that I read Artemis the books for the second and third time
@@elmyr4art The Harry Potter Films and The Lord of The Rings Films are book adaptations done perfectly right and also i added the films on my "Greatest Films" list. 😊😊
They missed- oh wait nope Artemis is just an asshole in this one.
Hahaha I'm half laughing and half crying that because of Disney my favorite book series will probably never get a proper film adaptation
I love how the first thing we see Artemis do is surf. Really good indication to the audience how much of the actual book this movie will follow.
hugely true lol
The real Artemis would die seeing this scene 😂
The literal main point of his character is that he is a genius who has absolutely nothing in terms of physical ability
"I'd prefer scared to dead."
Now there's your problem. The original Artemis would rather be dead than scared.
The thing is, this was in the book, but this is way out of context! This was originally Artemis asking Butler to hold back if he could, not being a whiny kid scared of his own shadow! (No ill intent towards the actor though)
@Dinuka Wimalagunasekara yeah, right before he catapults a member of the LEP head first into the bushes. :D
@@rebeccamiller1400 Exactly! He wasn't saying "I'd prefer [myself] scared to dead", he was saying "I'd prefer [them] scared to dead" and it makes a hell of a difference!
He could be saying
Artemis: Butler I'd prefer scared if possible
Butler: Scared, Artemis
Artemis: I'd prefer scared to dead
well he is dead, and he has been replaced with what ever this is.
All of the books: Artemis is pale, skinny, and physically weak.
First shots in the trailer: Artemis SURFING?!
Johnathan Potts That is far from my first concern with this trailer
He's like if Bruce started training to be batman when he was 8, lol wtf is this
Not just that...I think the stickfighter in mask at 0:23 is also Artemis...In the books artemis was always wary of exercise and had occasional lack of coordination.
The entire essence of Artemis Fowl is brain over brawn and then "You've grown strong," as he takes someone down with a shinai (bamboo kendo sword that probably weighs half Artemis' weight)!
"Artemis aka XXX Xader Cage", said Disney executives.
The OG Artemis Fowl is like Breaking Bad for kids, this is just bad for kids.

Really not appreciate
What I took away from the books as a child: sometimes you gotta do bad stuff
Congratulations Percy Jackson! You officially aren’t the worst movie adaptation of a book!
🤣
Percy Jackson wasn’t meant to be an adaptation. They made a great movie out of just the key book elements
@@heyitsteej339 Then why call it Percy Jackson? Why not just make it an original story?

The moment I heard the words "I'm Holly Short, your ally on the other side", a little part of me died. I am never getting that part back.
When my sister told me the trailer wasn’t Artemis, I thought, “How much worse could this be, after the Percy Jackson movies?”
Very bad, apparently.

@Samuel Delamater question
A part of me died when I saw that they made Butler black, while also making Holly white. Granted it's been a really long time since I read these books but I distinctly remember Butler being Russian? Or generally Eurasian. And Holly was described as having coffee-coloured skin. The story was already fucking diverse and they flipped that around for.... Some fucking reason.
"Your ally on the other side."
Hearing those words caused me physical pain.
excaclty, he was supposed to kidnap her
and that suit and helmet, and the actor chosen is so not like holly

How ironic, there's a book series with the same name. The writers should check it out some time.
yeah, that good book series about a child prodigy. maybe disney could read some for inspiration.
No fucking duh! This is gonna be an abomination compared to the books!
Holy crap man. Underrated comment
This killed me
@Vincent H. It's not even remotely close to the books. It's like they only used the name and maybe a faint idea of the characters. The plot is derailed and practically insults the main character, Artemis himself. It's not even close.
Book: *You took nothing from me*
Disney: *I don't even know who you are*
Enraged fans: You will.
I AM HERE ! TO STOP THAT SHIZ ! THE SERIES IS SO AWESOME !
Butler black 😂
Binetero that sounds a little racist but I get it. His character is white.
"I will destroy everything you love"- one of the most overused movie lines ever.
This movie has tons of cliches that need to die, including the main character having a "destiny" and needing to "save the world."
And it is ironic that that's exactly what Disney did to this film adaptation!

I bet they got "it's an occupational hazard" from How to Train Your Dragon

Holy is white, the Butlers (who are Eurasian) are black, Root is a girl, I get diversity quotas but.... holly being (nut brown/could be casted to a lot of POC) and female, Butlers being Eurasian.... the quota was filled in the books, so why do they intentionally misrepresent characters? It's not for the acting talent that's for sure lol.
Artemis doing exercise was the biggest turnoff for me😭😭
This is an Irish novel! Everyone is supposed to be European! Holly is originally ginger! Butler is originally bald European!
@@ehudkirsh766 it's set in Ireland, doesn't mean everyone is white and European. Butler is Eurasian, and so is Juliet, although she was born in America. Holly is ginger, but the first book clearly states that she has brown skin.

I like how they ruined everything that made Artemis Artemis, made Artemis look like scared boy instead of a genius, removed all the fun or disgusting scenes with Mulch Diggums, literally merged books 1-5,put everything as very mysterious when it was actually not,and you are a legend if you noticed the fives, always 5,four is death.
It was on 5 likes. I had a problem with that
Wasn't Mulch being casually disgusting the one thing they stayed true to
@@molanogan7409 The whole "feeding time" scene was mostly faithful thing in the movie.
"How badass do you want the character to be?"
Disney: "No."
JRR Tolkien didn't want Disney to ever touch his properties and here is a good example on why he was right
Sometimes they make the MCU, sometimes they make the sequel trilogy... and sometimes they make this.
They can be hit or miss as a whole.
@@bthsr7113 The MCU they got super lucky with. They bought Marvel Studios when it had competent leadership and a plan in place. All Disney had to do was pour money on the MCU films then get out of the way and let Kevin Feige do the work. Star Wars was all Disney and it's been a colossal failure. Even if you liked the movies, from a business standpoint the movies have grossed less money with each new release. They got into a war with the fans and merchandising sales have not been great. This trailer suggests that future franchises may not be as well planned out as the MCU has been either.

@Brady Carrigan I'm still mad about that kid's grave from last year
You know, Disney, a lot of these mistakes *could* have been forgivable, but the cardinal sin here is casting Artemis as a wide-eyed and surprised child. The fantasy of Artemis Fowl is, first and foremost, a savagely intelligent kid outsmarting the adults who underestimate him, wrapped up in sci-fi-high-fantasy-espionage. You've utterly decimated that cornerstone and, unfortunately, nothing else really matters with that damage done.
Amen!
You pretty hit the nail on the head. The other main thing is that Artemis is cold, calculating, and not far from ruthless when the series starts. He was very much a villain, and his growth into a hero was a major point of the series.
PREACH.
i feel like Aidan Gallagher or someone like that would be so much better acting as Artemis lol
@Dan S People who actually want a story to be adapted with the proper respect it deserves don't have a life?
hmm.. you should probably look in a mirror, or at least get your high school diploma with some straight A's. Or take up a hobby that isn't trying to be a sad tiny troll.
As an Artemis Fowl book fan, the fact that they didn’t even make the characters look canon like in the books when they made the movie is a crime against humanity 😔🔪
It should be renamed: artemis fowl fanfiction by Disney

The Last Airbender or Dragon Ball? Which one is worse? I honestly can't make up my mind. lol But yes, this movie trailer shows that it has a lot more in common with those movies. Honestly, I would have rather they done an animated CGI series.
I think the mario live action takes the cake
Im pretty sure this Artemis would say yes to the kids menu
He also wouldn't think that the menu itself would be more healthy than anything on said menu
He definitely doesn't sound the the boy who's most embarrassing moment was getting a question wrong on a test
he would even let a waitress put ice in his spring water

Artemis Fowl is a series of redemption in a way. Arty was a evil little kid in the first book, imprisoning Holly to interrogate her to know more info about the fairy world and the artifact he found in Vietnam. He is a criminal mastermind or rather "was" when he started to sympathize with other people and gained Holly's trust.
I think you missed the explainer at the pitch meeting by about three years.
@@baldieman64 possibly it has been a long while since I've gotten back in the series.

exactly
@Maple Buescher In the first book he realises he’s about to get punched in the face by a 70 pound fairy girl and without Butler there to stop it, he’s just gonna have to take it.
He was a mob boss in the book this movie doesn't exist.
he is the proteganist in the series........and he saved his mom......and his family's fortune.........and thats just from the first book
It's actually impressive. Not a single person involved with this movie seems to have read the source material.

Maybe this isn’t so much and adaptation as an interpretation of the books, specifically after he had his memories erased.

Honest question: who would be fine with an actual decent remake where the characters are exactly the same and speak the book word for word and don’t change a single thing about the plot? I would honestly prefer that and it wouldn’t even take much effort on Disney’s part to just fuck off, hire no writers and just copy off the book, I’m sure at least 70% of us who’ve read the books just want to see the books instead of this steaming pile of shit.

Movie: "And I'm Holly Short, your ally on the other side."
Did we even bother with the books-
I'm convinced the writers never opened a book, and instead flipped through the comic version once, waited a year, then wrote the movie script from memory.
I've watched the movie without having read the books before, but I had heard of them and knew the general idea and characters (it had been on my reading list for a long time, but somehow other books always got in between, lol). But even just having heard of the story n characters: watching the movie got me absolutely confused. So I decided to finally have a look at the first book and it took me literally just THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS to think: WTF did they do in this movie?! After the first three chapters only I got a very different characterization of Artemis (him being pretty badass and Machiavellian, while the most badass thing this kid in the movie does is wearing sunglasses), I learned that Artemis' mother just is not dead and that Artemis' father and Artemis himself were pretty openly criminals, so why tf does he get so upset (and that also in this cry baby kind of way) about his father being accused of being criminal in the movie? And why is Butler black but they white wash Holly? I mean: He's described in the first chapter as Eurasian and she in the third chapter as having, quote "nut-brown skin"? If the idea was to be racially diverse, why not in a way that is accurate to the book?
And I think like this and feel forced to write this long long comment after just having read THREE CHAPTERS, to repeat it once more. Must be some record for a bad book to movie adaption, lol :D :D

The only answer to the question 'what's wrong with this adaption?' would be: 'Everything.'
the worst part of this is that the original book was such a concise and contained story it'd be easy to adapt pretty accurately and still have a reasonable length movie.
ikr! Literally all they had to do was copy the plot from the book. But no, they had to try to cram 3 different Artemis Fowl storylines into a single movie.
@@TheMidnightillusion
Colfer said the movie was only based on the first book.
@fred mctictac
Yeah, it's Kenneth Branagh this time and Disney shouldn't have hired him. Branagh isn't even a successful director and this is not the first time he would mess up an adaptation. I heard this was the case with Murder on the Orient Express.
@@CarloNassar And yet we have the rescuing of Artemis' father and the Goblin rebellion which is the subject of the second book, and an attack on Fowl Manor which isn't in any of the books I've read. In fact, from watching the trailer it doesn't appear to be based on the first book at all.
The sad thing is that not only are they ruining this film with so many different conflicting storylines but they are ruining any sequels that might follow. The book series has very good character progression for both Artemis and Holly but what they are doing here is going to make such character progression impossible. Even if they do try to follow the plots of the later books in the series it won't work nearly as well because there won't be any character progression left to explore.
@@TheMidnightillusion
Then the director clearly decided to put random parts during the delay to 2020 at the time. Also, there won't be any more sequels if this movie bombs like most Disney films so there can be hope for them to try again in a few years and choose a better director than *Kenneth Branagh.*
I should have known that Disney wouldn’t have the balls to make Artemis the despicable character we all love, it’s not “child friendly” enough.

This makes The Dark Tower look like an extremely faithful adaptation by comparison. Why even adapt a story if you’re not actually going to adapt it?
I looked at it yesterday and it was amazing!!
Such an amazing book, and I can’t get over how much I enjoyed reading it. Oh, wait. We’re talking about the movie? No thanks. Bye.
Artemis Fowl movie: *is trash*
Literally every live Disney remake: "First time?"
Nah, the Jungle Book had redeeming qualities.
But honestly that's about the only one of the lot, so I'll give you a big yes.
Star Wars fans: Hello There.
I liked Maleficent. It's so different that U din't really consider it a remake of sleeping beauty, and that scene where the king was talking to her wings while his wife was dying had me laughing so hard I almost pissed myself.
Not like this.
Ok, but imagine being a little kid whose only exposure to the Artemis Fowl series is this movie. Can you imagine the surprise when you actually read the book, and watch your sweet little boy running around kidnapping and torturing people?
Priceless
Switch Artemis with Eragon and that's how I first found out about the books. Honestly maybe that's why I still find the Eragon movie a guilty pleasure of mine. Though gonna say, from the bad trio of Eragon, Percy Jackson and (eventually) Artemis Fowl, Eragon at least roughly followed the plot.
Good Lord I just face palmed seeing this. In the books the dad never knows anything about the world of magic! How did the creator of the books sign off on this perversion? Its so loosely based it should have been a totally different movie and probably would do better than this! It disappoints me on every level.
@@slingshothero8856 he probably signed off on it cause they gave him a nice paycheck. Great for the author but it would have been better if colfer had say on the movie adaptation. Movies are always better when they consult with the writer.
SlingShot Hero actually the father did know, but his memory was wiped
@@Mike-hy8cs From my understanding he had already been pushing for a movie for a long time now, I guess when disney stepped up he was more eager to just get it done as a last statement to the franchise
How the hell did Kenneth Branagh's directing career went from Thor, Cinderella and Murder on the Orient Express to this? Man, I hope he redeem his directing career in Death On The Nile
2 words. Executive Meddling. Kenneth Branagh didn''t direct this. The executives of Disney and Miramax did.
Disney: I like the name Artemis fowl. ........
Everything this movie destroyed:
-Artemis' entire criminal mastermind character
-Holly, no longer a badass
-Butler, how is he the knowledgeable one now?
-Artemis' Father WTF?
-Artemis and Butler's relationship
-Artemis and Holly's relationship
-The entire fucking plot
-The entire fucking point of the story
-Oh my God is Artemis wearing JEANS???
-Artemis is no longer self-made
-He's just in the shadow of his father now
-Holly looks like she lost all her spice
-If Artemis is suddenly a badass fighter he doesn't need Butler anymore
-Opal... seriously??
-Does Artemis even DO anything in this movie?
-He's wearing JEANS!!!
Everything this movie got right:
-The manner looks like a well-chosen set
Night Fury Flame the actor for holly looks nice and i think she was chosen well imo
But i see what you mean
LAZY PEOPLE WHI CALL THEMSELVES “WRITERS”
@@KJ-ud9uf You're right. Holly was cast well but here character is ruined, she has no spice!
A lot of the stuff you just listed cannot be deduced by the short trailer
And why is Commander Root played by a woman? I haven't read the books in a while but I think that Holly Short is supposed to be the only female officer at LEPrecon. She had to constantly prove herself. Casting a woman as Root completely destroys Holly's character arc.
That better not be Artemis we see fencing. The Artemis we know nearly died climbing a ladder.
samtherat6 he nearly died when he got punched in the face by holly
That’s not fencing. It’s called kendo.
He ride horses... That is not that far from fencing, but yep...
Michal Soukup And even then, he only does THAT because, and if I may quote, “the horse does most of the work”. He blew off most of his excersizing to go work on a laser or a plane... one of the two, I forget which!

Disney: LETS MAKE ARTEMIS WEAR CASUAL!!!!
Me: ( begs LEP for mind wipe, then throws self off cliff into pit of goblins )
You need the confidence of Tom Felton to portray Artemis Fowl
Ugh, they totally messed up Artemis' character. He's a cold, calculating, manipulative, evil mastermind who acts like a 20-year-old stuck in a 12-year-olds body. Now he's a helpless welp who needs to be shown the supposed secrets of his family? Original Artemis already knew all those secrets and he was the one who discovered the fairy world all on his own. Why have you nerfed him so?
Totally this.
In the books, Arty literally figures out the fairy world exists on his own, at 12 years old, purely so he can LITERALLY ROB THEM. And then he DOES. In the face of impossible technology and magic, he freaking ROBS THEM BLIND like they were chumps, troll or no troll.
This? This isn't Fowl, it's FOUL!
Probably for relatability. Hard for kids to relate to cold, calculating criminal super-geniuses.
@@Shadowkey392 still wish they wouldn't just target it like this
@@Shadowkey392 And yet the books were written for children...

This makes the Percy Jackson movies look like masterpieces that recreated the books word for word
True. At least Percy Jackson followed the "general" story... In zig zags, but still the same ending...
I can name you 3 big changes in this trailer that take the entire story to a completely different direction from the very begining.
Nah. Nothing tops those movies in terms of butchering the source material

Hey Disney, it's not April Fools quite yet, but I get it, everyone mistakes a date or two in their life. When can we expect the ACTUAL trailer?
Artemis way too expressive and athletic (especially this lol). He’s supposed to be a pseudo-villain with a calculating nearly-emotionless demeanor and arrogant.
I remember being hyped up for a movie, but now I feel like I’m not missing much by not seeing this. Think I’ll go re-read the books 🤷🏻♀️

Technically Artemis fowl started as a following in my parents foot steps thing.
@@gavingameplay5790 yes *_BUT_* no
@Dan S I mean this movie is probably gonna flop lmao.
@@gavingameplay5790 Not really? Artemis becoming a criminal mastermind was taking the helm of the Fowl empire _after_ his father tried to shut it all down, and his father had no knowledgeable of the fairy world. Fucking nobody did. Oh... did you miss the Disney logo in the intro?

Strange we bought the book years ago with a sticker that said "soon to be a major motion picture" & yet we never heard about the movie. You'd think, especially during the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home, that they would have publicized this a bit more.
Is it really that hard to make a reasonably faithful adaptation of the book?
"I'm Holly Short, your ally on the other side"
Umm, you mean the cop Artemis kidnapped and ransomed? the whole plot of the book? How do you mess up an adaptation this badly?
Easy. Just be Disney and the rest happens automatically
Disney is known for doing source materials justice if they rework them properly (Tangled), and then they have source materials where they...I don’t know what they did (John Carter, The Black Cauldron, A Wrinkle in Time).
They grab so much material, but yet they grab one part of the books, a title from another book, cram as many parts from other books, and make up whatever else.
@@frisbyart at least john carter was fun to watch. The artemis foul movie is just pure shite
movies always ruin the books. percy jackson is a great reference.
pretty sure they combined all the books into one here lol so they probably took her 'emotions' from after those first few books of kidnapping..
How is this “Artemis Fowl”?!?
Definitely not based on the book.
Why do they have to change the entire plot?
amber_the_first and the character don’t forget that
Because Disney doesn't give a shit
@Hyrum Wood i'd be surprised if this makes any money because actual artemis fowl fans aren't gonna pay to see this trash.

Me : mom can i have the artemis fowl book?
Mom : you silly, why read a book when we already have the film?
artemis fowl movie :
This trailer reminds me of back in school days where I found myself in the unfortunate position of having a book report due the following day, but have not read said book. You could own up to, tell the teacher and hope for some mercy on the make-up. I however would choose to swing for the fences every time. It worked out great once where I gave a 12 minute speach on a book I basically only knew the title of. The others times were something akin to this movie. In my case I was a just a dumb lazy kid, and would dissapoint a most one teacher. Also I wouldn't blow millions of dollars to do so.
Though I'm bugged this abomination of a book adaptation came to be, I'm honestly more curious as to the behind the scenes process of how it happened and how many times, if any, that someone would ask the creative director: "Yeah, but are you sure?" Or at what point they came to the realisation that they done goofed. Thats a movie I like to see. Lord knows Disney/Hollywood got lots of source to pull from. "The making of a Turd Burger: A Hollwood Story"
With the Artemis Fowl movie, they didn't butcher the source material. They yeeted it off a cliff after tying nooses around the characters' necks so they could drag the bodies back up so they could dance them around as puppets. They also painted them to look different.
I mean really, Butler is F*CKING JAPANESE!!!! well you can't say Disney not reverting back to the song of the south type casting.
@@DukeofKeK Butler, is euroasian, not necessary Japanese.
But is the plot the problem!
If they would stayed original to the books, i personally could accept this.
But the Disney is Disney.
I hope the ones that come up with this idea fall from a cliff.
@@the_user1522 in later books it say him and his sister are euro/japanese. But I digress the trailer looks like it's a sequel to the book series.
Butler being black also has problems since his family served the Fowls for generations which gives me some slavery vibes
The Percy Jackson fandom offers their support if the book is screwed over in this movie.
Do you think that you still have chance to keep 1st place in the worst book adaptation or you will finally loose to someone?
