    It is I think themost emotional and personal composition Tuomas ever wrote. It is about the hate that Tuomas got from the fans about the firing of Tarja.They already saw that coming long in advance. What Tuomas did not see coming was the hate he received from the fanbase. The fans loved Tarja, and could not believe that the band fired her. Moreover, they were upset about the way it all went down. Let’s not go into details, but the bottom line is that the fans really took their anger out on Tuomas. He was the bad guy, even though it was a unanimous band decision, the fans blamed Tuomas for what had happened. That is what drove him in his depression, and that’s mostly what the song is about. He felt abandoned and used by the fans. He wrote beautiful music that the fans loved so much, but in difficult times they dropped him like a stone.
    He wrote this suicide song instead of doing it for real. At the end Marco and Emppu are next to him for some support.
    The next masterpiece (imo even greater) must be 'The graetest show on earth, about the history of the universe, evolution. After the book from Richard Dawkins.

      It was also noted that Tuomas turns off the vocals in his earpiece and just plays the music maybe because it is so emotional that he can no longer stand hearing the words. Yes, and Marco and Emppu provide support by staying near him during this piece.

    Great reaction to the music and nice breakdown afterwards. A lot of fans want the lyric video and background understanding before reacting to make sure the reactor understands the depth of emotion in this song, however you caught the intent and power as you heard it and read the interview afterwards which you obviously read prior, so great job. You are so right, it's a masterpiece.

    To understand the story you need to know the backstory.
    Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano. "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
    3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
    Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
    The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
    When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now.

      since Tuomas led Tarja to believe that another album was in the offing, but knew a head of time that it was not and Tarja served her purpose, he figured he could take his revenge...even though Tarja agreed to an amicable split, well before the event

  • @damienmaynard8892
    @damienmaynard8892 Před 3 lety +2

    Boy soprano at the the start is Guy Elliott from St Mary's Choir School Reigate. The Choir is The London Metro Voices. The London Philharmonic Orchestra recorded the backing track with Tuomas and Pip Williams. Tuomas often plays the lead instruments (brass, strings, woodwind etc.) on one of his keyboards.... Marko sang the original demo version solo - very much darker and angry musically and lyrically.... The second soprano part, "Sparkle my scenery...." was also a boy soprano on the record but Floor said "I can do it" and Tuomas said "Do it!".... The whispered voice "... 3 minutes and counting".... check it - 3 minutes later Tuomas "cuts" his head off! Details!!!

    You used the correct word my friend. "This is a masterpiece". More than a song. It was an artistic presentation of a tragic emotional story set to music. Tuomas was symbolically killing and laying to rest the depression and mental anguish which he endured when they were forced to part with Tarja. Great reaction video my friend. Next time. Peace.

  • @madmansurfing
    @madmansurfing Před 3 lety +4

    Hilarious! Really great reaction. You very well recognized the scale of the musicianship necessary to compose and perform this masterpiece. For me this is in the tradition of great Operas, especially Wagners pieces. Those emotions in its depth and variety are soooo similar. Even if this experience we witness is traumatic, it is presented in the most beautiful and affectionate way imaginable.
    Thanks my friend

    This is a live version about 10 years later than the actual thing happened and the reason for this song existed. Tuomas wrote it for the next album and Anette did it so well there already. But yes...they have had time to fine tune this song for this live to be so awesome also on the stage. Sometimes he cuts the vocal sound from his in ears so he can keep straight stand with the keys.

    Thank you, Dereck for your reaction to this masterpiece. I just came here from another reaction to this song and I wasn't impressed with it.But I know there are few people in the reactors who get this song.You are now one of them.You actually pay attention to the whole thing.Especially how it's personal and emotional, you respect the performance. Some native english speaking reactors don't understand the lyrics, they laugh to the song, they are rambling about technicalities etc. This song is all about mastering technicalities, interpetation, mood, melodies etc.But above all it's about personal feelings of Tuomas's and very emotional at that.You understood that, you said it.I don't know if you did backstory search beforehand but anyway: WELL DONE, YOU.I don't usually watch reactions to this song because most of the time they disappoint me with their ignorance but I'm so glad I watched this. 😊And nice touch with Tuomas's words at the end.THANK YOU.

    Great job, my man. Enjoyed that👍🏻👍🏻
    When you watch it again, at some time, take notice of when the little boy says 3 minutes and counting. It's exactly 3 minutes to the the point that Tuomas "kills" himself.
    Further to his fantasy love, The White Lands Of Empathica is from Stephen King's The Dark Tower series
