The screenplay was written by Morrie Ryskind, with uncredited contributions by La Cava, based on "1011 Fifth", a short novel by Eric Hatch. The story concerns a socialite who hires a derelict to be her family's butler, only to fall in love with him, much to his dismay.
During the Great Depression, Godfrey "Smith" (William Powell) is living alongside other men down on their luck at the city dump. One night, spoiled socialite Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick) offers him five dollars to be her "forgotten man" for a scavenger hunt. Annoyed, he advances on her, causing her to retreat and fall on a pile of ashes. She leaves in a fury, much to the glee of her younger sister, Irene (Carole Lombard). After talking with her, Godfrey finds her to be kind, if a bit scatter-brained. He offers to go with Irene to help her beat Cornelia. In the ballroom of the Waldorf-Ritz Hotel, Irene's long-suffering businessman father, Alexander Bullock (Eugene Pallette), waits resignedly as his ditsy wife, Angelica (Alice Brady), and her mooching "protégé" Carlo (Mischa Auer) play the frivolous game. Godfrey arrives and is "authenticated" by the scavenger hunt judge as a "forgotten man". He then addresses the idle rich, expressing his contempt for their antics. Irene is apologetic and offers him a job as the family butler, which he gratefully accepts.
The next morning, Godfrey is shown what to do by the sardonic, wise-cracking maid, Molly (Jean Dixon), the only servant who has been able to put up with the antics of the family. She warns him that he is just the latest in a long line of butlers. Only slightly daunted, he proves to be surprisingly competent, although Cornelia still holds a sizeable grudge. On the other hand, Irene considers Godfrey to be her protégé, and is thrilled by his success. A complication arises when a guest, Tommy Gray (Alan Mowbray), greets Godfrey familiarly as an old friend. Godfrey quickly ad-libs that he was Tommy's valet at school. Tommy plays along, mentioning Godfrey's non-existent wife and five children. Dismayed, Irene impulsively announces her engagement to the surprised Charlie Van Rumple (Grady Sutton), but she soon breaks down in tears and flees after being politely congratulated by Godfrey. Over lunch the next day, Tommy is curious to know what one of the elite "Parkes of Boston" is doing as a servant. Godfrey explains that a broken love affair had left him considering suicide, but the optimistic, undaunted attitude of the men living at the dump rekindled his spirit.
Meanwhile, when everything she does to make Godfrey's life miserable fails, Cornelia sneaks into his room and plants her pearl necklace under his mattress. She then calls the police to report her "missing" jewelry. To Cornelia's surprise, the pearls do not turn up, even when she suggests they check Godfrey's bed. Mr. Bullock realizes his daughter has orchestrated the whole thing and sees the policemen out. The Bullocks then send their daughters off to Europe to get Irene away from Godfrey. When they return, Cornelia implies that she intends to seduce Godfrey. Worried, Irene stages a fainting spell and falls into Godfrey's arms. He carries her to her bed, but while searching for smelling salts, he realizes she's faking when he sees her (in a mirror) sit up briefly. In revenge, he puts her in the shower and turns on the cold water full blast. Far from quenching her attraction, this merely confirms her hopes: "Oh Godfrey, now I know you love me...You do or you wouldn't have lost your temper."
When confronted by the rest of the family, Godfrey quits. But Mr. Bullock has more pressing concerns...

+ Timeless Classic Movies, Great job on this one and hope you folks can keep going. I have a request if you can find it (Paradise Island) with Jimmy Moore 1939 I believe it is one of the best films ever and is much like (My Man Godfrey) with a great plot as well. I've only got to see it once quite a few years ago and I know everyone who loves good old movies will love it and thanks again for putting on (My Man Godfrey) its one of my favorites.

It was one of my all time favorites James (Jimmy) Moore plays the lead and does an excellent job as the head servant does a great job in a keeping hands off and mind on his position. That is until the family decided to go on a island vacation and take a few of their trusted servants with them. As you must already know they get lost at sea and end up stranded on an unknown island. I can remember it like it was yesterday and actually thought about writing a sequel to it. If there is anyone out there who knows of anyone who might know where a copy could be found there are a lot of folks who would like to see it again. P.S. I gotta ask you Bruce if you like astronomy, science, or history?
@@velikovskysghost I Do! Almost every night the wife and I check out the stars, Arians Belt.! The visibility is limited in Orange County CA. We took a trip south just off the coast, La Jolla,? Indian Reservation,,, It was mind boggling! Trillions and ga-Zillions of stars, Galaxies,,, something about the sea breeze meeting the warmer land mass and the air shoots up, revealing stars like I have never seen! Dress warm it gets cold. Science, "microscopic world" Incredible! Water, check out water feels emotions, the effect of words on water, Amazing. History, some, George Washington who was definitely Saved, "the man who couldn't be killed" That's what the indians called him, Four bullet holes in his coat and two horses shot out from under him. But mainly I read, guess what? The Bible. Bruce

This was the movie that made me fall in love with William Powell and Carole Lombard. Amazing they were so good together even after their divorce. They honestly care about one another, it's obvious! I love nearly every movie he made! RIP William Powell! RIP Carole Lombard, such a tragic end to her life.
Godfrey's faces throughout the family's wacky antics are priceless.

I love this movie. The two stars William Powell and Carol Lombard are terrific. The humor never fails no matter how many times I watch it. A true classic. May it live for generations.
One of my top ten. The dishwashing scene is as sweet as pie. Keep in mind that they had just divorced when that scene was filmed.
The film stands or falls on its own merits, or in this case, lack of them. Terrible ending.
My Man Godfrey: The first time I saw this movie was about 1955, and just fell in love with the plot. And this movie has all kinds of plots, weaving and turning. Truly a lite heated and warming movie. I give it 10 stars. Refreshing change from all the crime of various sorts.
Its a shame Carole Lombard died so young. We were denied many more fine comedies...

Ever since I saw this saw this movie in Film History class, I've adored this film.
This movie has always been one of my favorite screwball comedies from the 1930's in my opinion the golden age of Hollywood thank you for making it avaliable once again.

My favorite William Powell movie of all time--and I am a genuine fan of his work. This one has a great script. Ditzy society people of the 30's acting silly while a sensible guy, "the forgotten man" sits on his ash pile and observes every social situation with wit and sophistication.
And also with wisdom and sheer force of character.
I fall in love with Godfrey every single time, and I've seen this picture literally dozens of times. I think that I am like many a woman who'd marry a man like Godfrey in a New York minute if one were available for her to say yes to.
"The man's perfect. I've been wanting to say that all night, but I didn't have the nerve."
That's one of the best asides written for any motion picture, and it sums up the film's title character beautifully. Thanks for sharing this. I already own the DVD, but have not watched it in a while. Too lazy this evening to do anything but watch it here LOL

Just a little bit of trivia. After Gail Patrick, the older sister Cornelia, retired from acting she started a production company and became the executive producer of Perry Mason.
Thelsreal: Yes, I noticed that when I looked up the movie's entry in Wikipedia. When I saw Gail Patrick's name in the credits, it rang a bell. And I found out what you found out. And as a great fan of "Perry Mason," it made me like the film even more!
I love the Perry Mason series.
She made Raymond Burr a star. He was tall and stout and relegated to thugs and dark supporting characters but she saw his potential and asked him to lose weight which he did and the rest is history.
Thanks for the opportunity to see this Hollywood classic. As entertaining as the first view. The entire cast is pitch perfect.

William Powell was simply the best of them all, even in this farce . . .
William Powell (1892 - 1984) won an Oscar Best Actor nomination for his role in this 1936 film - it was one of three nominations he won, the others being for The Thin Man in 1934 and Life with Father in 1947. The character of Irene is played by Carol Lombard who was married to Powell in 1930 although the marriage only last two years - but, obviously, it was an amicable divorce. Powell was a hugely successful leading man in the 930s and is probably best known for The Thin man which, after its success in 1934, spawned five sequels up to 1947. Myrna Loy appeared opposite him in all and together they appeared in fourteen movies. His last role as Doc in Mr Roberts (1955) was almost thirty years before his death.
Wonderful movie, William Powell was soooo handsome! I cried my eyes out when Godfrey left the Bullocks. But then when him and Irene got married, I kept crying. ❤

Don Adams, the star of the TV series "Get Smart" did impressions when he was a standup comedian. On of his impressions was of William Powell, and he use that impression to help create his "Maxwell Smart" character.

The woman playing the mother in real life was dying of cancer and I believe this was her final performance. She was so delightful, it wouldn't have been the same without her.

What I admire most about William Powell was his retirement plan. He made his last film (Mr. Roberts) in 1955 and proceeded to turn down every movie offer for the next 29 years before dying at age 91 in 1984. Well done.

I had a friend who worked with him for years as a studio guitarist in Hollywood since 1935 he played 100's of movies and 1000's of songs throughout his career, Alton R. (Al) Hendrickson was his name. He just passed away in 2008 and I knew him and his wife Dame Mary Patricia (Patti) Hendrickson for 26 and 28 years respectfully and I miss them both dearly.
I can almost Goofy’s falling yell when Mr Bullock throws Carlo out the window.

This Vintage Hollywood Classic has my Late Moms Uncle Alan Mowbray in it .When I was a child at 13 in 74 asked her where I got my first name from.She replied I named you after a War Hero an Movie Star ten years after her Death I looked up Alan Mowbray sure enough it's all True he was Decorated by France and his native England for Bravery. Like many Hollywood Stars who went to War he was an Amazing Star who worked with other Icons of Vintage Hollywood.
One of my all time favorite movies. I watch it at least one every year. Everyone was great in it but Carole Lombard was over the top terrific.

Such a pleasure to watch. God, this was amusing.
I laughed so hard at the scene, where Irene fakes a fainting spell, and Godfrey is talking to her in baby talk, pick her up and throws her in the shower. It’s how he was talking to her that really made me laugh. I’m glad to see that after their divorce, they were still friends enough to make a movie together. ❤

I've heard of ppl saying "my man Godfrey" in the past, but nvr knew it was a Film. This film is just lovely!!
It's Funny; it's emotional; it addresses morality & ppls often wavering ethics: it confronts the often superficial value system of ppl; and lastly the capacity Ppl have and the crucial need for ppl to have empathy. Such a good film all around! I did get annoyed by Irene's crying and Cornelia's rudeness, but in the end the 2 characters made me that much more into the film. Like I couldn't stand the whining but because of that I became engrossed/ involved in the film. I wanted to see them change and/ or realize their faults... Idk if explaining correctly.. It's jus a good film - watch it! :)
You could probably do an essay on the deeper meaning of a Christmas card. This film has a terrible, illogical ending. They ran out of bad plot, THE END.
