Elephant Boy (1937) [Adventure] [Drama] [Family]
If you like this movie and our channel, please subscribe: goo.gl/0qDmXe | Elephant Boy is an adventure film starring Sabu in his film debut. Documentary filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty, who produced some of the Indian footage, and supervising director Zoltan Korda, who completed the film, won the Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival. The film was made at the London Films studios at Denham, and in Mysore, India, and is based on the story "Toomai of the Elephants" from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book (1894).
The movie ist about Toomai (Sabu), a young boy growing up in India, who longs to become a hunter. In the meantime, he helps his mahout (elephant driver) father with Kala Nag, a large elephant that has been in their family for four generations. Petersen (Walter Hudd) hires the father and Kala Nag, among others, for a large annual government roundup of wild elephants to be tamed and put to work. Amused by Toomai and learning that he has no one but his father to look after him, Petersen allows the boy to come too. Strangely, no elephants have been seen in the region in a while, so Petersen has staked his reputation on a guess that they will be found further north. However, six weeks of hunting prove fruitless. He is ready to give up, but his right-hand man, Machua Appa (Allan Jeayes), persuades him to keep hunting for another month. When the other hired natives learn of Toomai's ambition, they mock him, telling him that he will become a hunter only when he sees the elephants dance (a myth).
One night, Toomai's father spots a tiger prowling near the camp and wakes Petersen. When the two go out to shoot the beast, Toomai's father is killed. Kala Nag's grief becomes so intense, he rampages through the camp, only stopping when Toomai calms him down. Petersen decides to assign cruel Rham Lahl (Bruce Gordon) to Kala Nag, as Toomai is too young for the job. When Rham Lahl beats the elephant, however, Kala Nag injures his tormenter. The mahout insists that Kala Nag be destroyed, as is the law. Petersen manages to get him to change his mind and accept 100 rupees instead by threatening to have him removed from the safety of the camp.
Unaware of this reprieve, Toomai takes Kala Nag and runs away into the jungle. There, they stumble upon the missing wild elephants, and Toomai sees them dancing. He leads Petersen to them. The other natives are awed, and hail him as "Toomai of the Elephants". Machua Appa offers to train the boy to become a hunter, a plan Petersen approves of.

SpongeBob introduced me to Nosferatu lol and Robert Eggers brought me back.
I knew this was going to be a good movie when I saw that it was approved with certificate #6676.🙄
Thought Jane Wyatt was Famous??😅
Been Binging on these old Black and White Movies I'm getting confused about which one's I've seen and which ones i haven't???
Gee, (Robert Young) Jim Anderson was nice to marry 'Margaret' after the bad stuff she did in this movie. I hope Betty, Bud and Kathy never knew what a ho their mom was. :) If you've ever driven one of the old "lead sleds", you know what a miracle it is that they could speed around a corner without flying out of control. The '76 Lincoln Mark V I restored weighed a bit over 5,000 pounds-more than 2 tons of Chrome and sturdy metals- yet a good pair of shocks made it as safe as one of my sporty cars. It's a shame this was so low budget- with good audio, lighting and all the other magic that makes a quality movie, this would be pretty popular, IMO. TY!
Worst ever?!?!?! Gotta see this! Worst sci fi ever!
George Romero did not think about race back then. He is a good soul that saw the flaws in society. that is why these films (the 3 in the trilogy) are important.
I stayed in the lobby when I was a kid grown now and I might stay in the lobby again
Boris Karloff and Leonard Mudie appearing together again here after both were in "The Mummy."
I still haven't seen Nosferatone. Anyone know where that is?
A lot of fans here like Johnny Weissmuller more, but Johnny worked for a studio that had a lot more money. Herman Brix had to do a lot of his own stunts, and he and the other actors in this movie ended up not getting paid for their work. Herman Brix (later known as Bruce Bennett) was a classy family man and later appeared in a number of movies with Humphrey Bogart.
👍👏👏
You would never think this was made in 1921 and released in 1922, you'd likely think it was made in 1922 and released in 1921.
Anybody remember Salams Lot? Dracula was made in the image of this one in movie.
WORST KID BROTHER EVER
Great movie......1922 , a lot , lot better than most of the crap released today
RIGHT ON!!!!!
OMG What an evil, manipulative corrupt woman…
He was arrested for wanting to find his wife. WOW
A dead dog in first minutes. Nope.
This film sucks!
New drinking game, take a shot every time someone tells Betty to stay there, and SHE DOESNT!
Thanks, good movie👍
I find it so funny that there was a time when people genuinely found this frightening, I mean, it's hardly The Exorcist! 😂
it was never the point of this movie to be like exorcist. People back in 1922 had plenty of opportunities to get frightened in real life, they didn't need to experience that feeling through cinema
@@user-mp2fb9ku5o I mean, there's people commenting here about how a grandparent of theirs went to see the film and found it frightening. Also, it's a horror film, and I'm pretty sure that generally the aim of horror films is to horrify/frighten the audience.
Like DUH! It's over 100 years old obviously, it's like being surprised people used horse and cart at a point it's a reflection of the time. They were limited and didn't have what we have currently but at the time people had never experienced anything like it so it's no surprise they were frightened..and to compare to The Exorcist which came out half a century later is goofy on your part.
@@Dburke267 "Like DUH!" Lol, what are you, five? My comment is simply acknowledging how much attitudes have changed. I brought up The Exorcist for contrast, because while it's not as old as Nosferatu, it is still over half a century old and still terrifies people to this day. Also, many people around the world still use horses and carts (Like DUH!) 😂
@@spector969 You don't want to go there and don't embarrass yourself. I was being polite, I understood your point and it's still trash.
I'm retired, didn't know what Film Noir meant until 4 months ago...now I'm enjoying all these black and white movies..Thank You for this Movie..
First time I’ve seen this movie and I really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing this classic film
Who’s here after the trailer for the 2024 remake came out today?!!?!
Hey, Brennan? This is the film you're looking for. :)
The fact that each of them had lives, knowledge, experience, and dreams that are now only marginally captured here blows my mind. People that are no more than what we see, and yet will never know. The memory of them almost fully faded to time.😮
Not my favorite Shadow movie, but at 70 my husband and I are happy finding a movie we haven’t seen yet. Thank you.
There are better, clearer and more original versions of this movie on CZcams. But the combination of the slight fuzziness and Schubert will always remind me of how I fell in love with silent movies. And it's still magical. So thank-you.
30:25 The one who was flickering the lights!!

Can't wait for Robert Eggers Verison of this film
Sound very bad But a good movie ❤❤

Yikes, the local ones are spaced out and bad enough.! (Voted the worst movie ever, in 9 out of 10 galaxies; source, the 'extraterrestrial times' magazine, 1962).😊
"Nitwits? What are they?"
I always fell for those RICK types when i was young😅😅
I like that nice LA smog
Zodiac movie directed me here. ☽
Love Jane Darby. A scene stealer in every film.
Candidate for mystery science theatre 3000.
l hate these old movies, ( not a film noir) and the stern mans voice talkig and explaining constantly, crappy. Bryner looks and act like he was a ponce, awful with hair.
This must have been recorded on the last of the nitrate film stock. In 1950 they started using plastic film.
My favorite movie to watch hungover. 😅
