Soon, the dramatizing Irene is in love with her 'protege'...who feels strongly that a romance between servant and employer is out of place, regardless of that servant's mysterious past...
Reviews:
"I don't want to be one of those "they don't make 'em like they used to" people, but I just can't help it when it comes to comedy. We've lost that talent completely, it seems. I can't think of any really great comedies of the past ten years. The golden age for film comedy was the mid 1930s to the mid 1940s (at least for the talkies; silent comedies were a totally different art form). This is also the period of the screwball comedy. My Man Godfrey was one of the first screwball comedies. Films such as Bringing Up Baby and The Lady Eve perfected the form, but My Man Godfrey is nearly as perfect. It isn't quite as funny as Bringing Up Baby nor is it as emotionally resonant as The Lady Eve, but it is funny, it has depression era social commentary (its main theme is identical to Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels, beating it by 6 years), and the script is marvelous. The finale is as good as any other comic finale, including the last scene of Some Like it Hot."

Butler Godfrey's attitude was wonderful. No wonder all the women like him. 😊
True that! Wish i could have one for myself! But just the wonderful butler part - this widow is DONE with husbands!
Who knows what lofty heights Lombard would have achieved had she not met an untimely demise. The screwiest of characters are often played by the most talented of actors.
Much agreed. Both statements. Well said! 🤟🏼
This is one of my most favorite films.... William Powell and Carole Lombard....doesn't get any better...
There was only one actor in the world. His name was William Powell.
Exactly
❤❤❤ William ❤❤
I absolutely love this film - Lombard is just stunning !
This film shows but a small sample of William Powell's wit and charm. One simply must view the Thin Man series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles.
The mother was fantastic.
The father too.
After seeing this classic innumerable times, it's great to see this colorized version 'bring it to life', so to speak. Eugene Pallette & Alice Brady, are as awesome as Carole & William Powell, a perfect film, but, it would've been fun to see a drunken Irene {Carole} arrive home on a horse and ride it into the library!
Eugene Pallette was underrated..a really funny guy without trying.
I had first seen this years ago at a movie theatre. It instantly became one of my all time favorites. Gail Patrick and Carole Lombard were stunning.
Third time watching this film. It is absolutely enchanting and refreshing. I love all the performances especially Lombard. So funny. William Powell was just extra. ❤❤❤❤extra fire he was amazing. I love this film so much.
Agree totally, Love it xx
lol tbh wasn’t sure if this “thing” with Mr Powell was just _me_ or .. i mean, he’s not even REMOTELY my “type” or whatever but in this movie he just .. sends me! 💕 Extremely gratifying to read comments like yours! Someone else mentioned something like “no wonder so many women loved his character” - NOT verbatim - but anyway this is so cool! It’s like TONS of women & doubtless lots of men ALSO agree that .. well i don’t know exactly what *_IT_* is - but in this film William Powell without a doubt possesses “IT”! lol *_WHEW!!🥵_* 🔥❤️🔥🔥 Sorry - TY for allowing me to invade your thread! 🤟🏼🕊️
Ps Not sure why but this comment is reminding me of Irene comforting Molly when they realize that they’re both in love with Godfrey! i adore her character - sweet but secretly smart! 🤣
So after being accused & searched for theft, sprawled in a chair - the evil way Godfrey eyeballs Cornelia from behind the flower
_still & always_ gives me a chill! ⚡️Dude was HOT!
Carole Lombard won best actress academy award for this film.FDR loved her as well we did
No, she did not. Carole Lombard was nominated but lost to Luis Ranier in "The Good Earth."
FDR was Americas 2nd worst President. Who cares what that pathetic Socialist thinks... FDR is who brought Fascism to America in the form of the Fascist New Deal. 1933 was a really big year for the Fascist/Socialists...
I just found out TODAY that they had the AUDACITY to remake this classic. I just finished it…It’s a NO for me. THIS is the only Version for me. ❤
If you are talking about the one with David Niven and June Allyson, yea, it was pretty bad.
Niven is not bad but Allyson is
Refreshingly funny , we all need comedy in these times .😊
Was lots of fun. Thanks for uploading.
I've seen this movie many times. In fact, this is the second time in two months, but this is the first time in color. Thanks for this wonderful upload. You have a new subscriber.

That last line always cracks me up even though I've seen it over 100 times.
Always on my watch list
The Thin Man would approve 😎
I like this movie better than I did the first-time round, understanding now that it’s a statement on Society (and History) at the time; though (from a story point of view) it still doesn’t make sense to Me that two such different People would have had a happy marriage, especially from Godfrey’s POV.
…I suppose, however, that ‘Happiness’ (and Marriage) means something unique to Each of Us.
I wish I knew more about the Writer of this story, and their experiences - leading up to the writing of this piece.
(Incidentally, the Sets are spectacular; I enjoyed seeing what the decor may have looked like, in colour!)
Thanks for uploading!
This was the first movie I ever bought.
Hilarious 😂 and everyone is a kid. Always loved the way they dressed so nice. Funny movie 😊
AGREED RE WILLIAM POWELL and then a very close second would have to be GREGORY PECK🥰
This one was made in black and white and that's how it should be watched
It's better in black and white but I'll watch it anyway
Great film.
There’s a very convincing message here…Go get your man! 😂
It seems like he let the wrong sister choose him, lol.
I get a kick out of the mother! 😂
I hated that it had to end😂

Which one was CAROLE LOMBARD, Irene the blond or Cornelius the brunette? I’m guessing IRENE THE BLOND but I’m not sure, thanks.
it's the blonde! cornelia was gail patrick.
It was said , that William Powell was in love W/ Jean Harlow ; is that Miss Harlow ? Whom plays the maid .🙄
💋💋
Color went in and out this time, from meeting Cornelia in 15 minutes on.
only 15 likes I must be getting very old
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I WATCH IT EVERY WEEK OR TWO!! THANKS.
@@garnettajohnson4560 thankyou
I stumbled upon this movie many years back but it opened the door for movies from that time frame and style. I loved it .
The style in this movie had made a return that dress with the chest and shoulder cut outs...Nothing new under the sun
@@rustymugg9658 well the movie was made in 1936 ...but I don't know styles before that time. They do.seem to just switch up over and over
First husband has more say
Great movie, a shame it is spoiled by the 'colorization'.
so, get out of my home Nick
the tantrums of the gilded age.....who ever thought this stuff was funny?
exactly
This is funny, comic timing and the acting are excellent.
@Lemmings M Do you realize that this was filmed during Great Depression? People were literally starving to death, unemployed, hopeless, and these clowns were making these lame unfunny fairytales to distract them.
@Lemmings M I am a dialectical materialist and an expert in political economy and I know very well that problems with finances in case of millions of people do not appear out of nowhere, they are not the result of their "personal choices" or "personal mistakes" either. Capitalist crises are cyclical, they are crises of relative overproduction (come see a video on my channel called "Cause of crises" in 2 parts, in English). A massive crisis of overproduction, brought on by the capitalist mode of production, in which the purchasing power of the great majority of people (hired workers, employees) is increasingly lagging behind the scale of production, the amount of goods being produced - that was the reason for the Great Depression (and any other crisis in the last 100+ years). Farmers were spilling milk, killing and burying livestock, leaving fresh produce to rot in the fields etc etc because those were overproduced (in relation to solvent demand). People might enjoy watching these movies, distracting themselves. I know why - they don´t know what else to do and want to hide inside their shell. But in reality, they will only get out of this hellscape when they face exactly what is causing their suffering, instead of hiding from it. Eventually, they will have no other choice. It will be either die or fight. In any case, such movies are a cynical, vile, deceptive way to distract people, the way a thief distracts his victim when reaching into his pocket.
You need a high I.Q. to be very amused by this. I found it hilarious.
