  • Colorized Classic Movie: My Man Godfrey - A scatterbrained socialite hires a vagrant as a family butler - but there's more to Godfrey than meets the eye.
    My Man Godfrey (1936)
    Director: Gregory La Cava
Writers: Morrie Ryskind(screen play), Eric Hatch(screen play), Zoe Akins(contributing writer)
Stars: William Powell, Carole Lombard, Alice Brady
    Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
    Country: United States
    Language: English
Release Date: 1 September 1936 (USA)
Filming Location: Universal Studios - 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, California, USA
    Storyline:
In the depths of the Depression, a party game brings dizzy socialite Irene Bullock to the city dump where she meets Godfrey, a derelict, and ends by hiring him as family butler. He finds the Bullocks to be the epitome of idle rich, and nutty as the proverbial fruitcake. Soon, the dramatizing Irene is in love with her 'protege'...who feels strongly that a romance between servant and employer is out of place, regardless of that servant's mysterious past...
    Reviews:
"I don't want to be one of those "they don't make 'em like they used to" people, but I just can't help it when it comes to comedy. We've lost that talent completely, it seems. I can't think of any really great comedies of the past ten years. The golden age for film comedy was the mid 1930s to the mid 1940s (at least for the talkies; silent comedies were a totally different art form). This is also the period of the screwball comedy. My Man Godfrey was one of the first screwball comedies. Films such as Bringing Up Baby and The Lady Eve perfected the form, but My Man Godfrey is nearly as perfect. It isn't quite as funny as Bringing Up Baby nor is it as emotionally resonant as The Lady Eve, but it is funny, it has depression era social commentary (its main theme is identical to Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels, beating it by 6 years), and the script is marvelous. The finale is as good as any other comic finale, including the last scene of Some Like it Hot."

Who knows what lofty heights Lombard would have achieved had she not met an untimely demise. The screwiest of characters are often played by the most talented of actors.

This film shows but a small sample of William Powell's wit and charm. One simply must view the Thin Man series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles.

After seeing this classic innumerable times, it's great to see this colorized version 'bring it to life', so to speak. Eugene Pallette & Alice Brady, are as awesome as Carole & William Powell, a perfect film, but, it would've been fun to see a drunken Irene {Carole} arrive home on a horse and ride it into the library!

lol tbh wasn’t sure if this “thing” with Mr Powell was just _me_ or .. i mean, he’s not even REMOTELY my “type” or whatever but in this movie he just .. sends me! 💕 Extremely gratifying to read comments like yours! Someone else mentioned something like “no wonder so many women loved his character” - NOT verbatim - but anyway this is so cool! It’s like TONS of women & doubtless lots of men ALSO agree that .. well i don’t know exactly what *_IT_* is - but in this film William Powell without a doubt possesses “IT”! lol *_WHEW!!🥵_* 🔥❤️‍🔥🔥 Sorry - TY for allowing me to invade your thread! 🤟🏼🕊️
Ps Not sure why but this comment is reminding me of Irene comforting Molly when they realize that they’re both in love with Godfrey! i adore her character - sweet but secretly smart! 🤣

I like this movie better than I did the first-time round, understanding now that it’s a statement on Society (and History) at the time; though (from a story point of view) it still doesn’t make sense to Me that two such different People would have had a happy marriage, especially from Godfrey’s POV.
…I suppose, however, that ‘Happiness’ (and Marriage) means something unique to Each of Us.
I wish I knew more about the Writer of this story, and their experiences - leading up to the writing of this piece.
(Incidentally, the Sets are spectacular; I enjoyed seeing what the decor may have looked like, in colour!)

@Lemmings M Do you realize that this was filmed during Great Depression? People were literally starving to death, unemployed, hopeless, and these clowns were making these lame unfunny fairytales to distract them.

    • @dodgro8342
      @dodgro8342 Před rokem

@Lemmings M I am a dialectical materialist and an expert in political economy and I know very well that problems with finances in case of millions of people do not appear out of nowhere, they are not the result of their "personal choices" or "personal mistakes" either. Capitalist crises are cyclical, they are crises of relative overproduction (come see a video on my channel called "Cause of crises" in 2 parts, in English). A massive crisis of overproduction, brought on by the capitalist mode of production, in which the purchasing power of the great majority of people (hired workers, employees) is increasingly lagging behind the scale of production, the amount of goods being produced - that was the reason for the Great Depression (and any other crisis in the last 100+ years). Farmers were spilling milk, killing and burying livestock, leaving fresh produce to rot in the fields etc etc because those were overproduced (in relation to solvent demand). People might enjoy watching these movies, distracting themselves. I know why - they don´t know what else to do and want to hide inside their shell. But in reality, they will only get out of this hellscape when they face exactly what is causing their suffering, instead of hiding from it. Eventually, they will have no other choice. It will be either die or fight. In any case, such movies are a cynical, vile, deceptive way to distract people, the way a thief distracts his victim when reaching into his pocket.
