- Paging Doctor Hackinslash. Paging Doctor Hackinslash. Your patient is ready in Operating Room 2.
In this video I explore some loud rattle and clank noises under my Yukon. I know the transfer case is broken and the 4 wheel drive is out. So, I wonder if removing the front drive shaft will stop some of the noises and help the truck drive better? Going over bumps occasionally "jolts" the trucks drive train. I show you how I (surgically) remove the drive shaft, take the truck for a spin and give you my impressions of how the truck drives. Do the noises go away?

Man you don’t know how much aggravation you saved me I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to pull this thing out until you mentioned the rubber boot thank you!
The tool chest going down the flight of stairs is some funny stuff. thanks 👍
Very instructed, keep going. Thank you
Great video! Just what I needed to know. Remove the clamp and the rubber boot...so smart.
Awesome vid - glad this showed in my feed. I am getting a rebuilt transmission in the FailBlazer!! I promise to stay under 5000 rpm from now on since I have researched the weaknesses of the 3-4 clutch of the 4l60e versus the TB's mighty torque. hahahaha. Maybe I should order another FailBlazer shirt...My first one did not last long - it faded pretty fast and got worn out...
Your funny bro I like your approach to it!
@flyhound97 fuck you
Thanks doc.
@The Daninator if you want to completely eliminate the front differential, take each CV shaft out, take the wheel end boot off and separate the CV shaft knuckle. Take that end and reinstall it into the wheel bearing. Once you have done this to both sides you have fully eliminated the front differential and the noise will completely be gone, assuming your wheel bearings are not bad. Good luck and God Bless.
Thank you brother.
Very helpful !!!
Hi there question can I drive my 4×4 truck whit out a cv axle like a 2 will drive??? Please help
You cant remove cv dumb ass ur wheel bearing will blow up
Donald Trump he’s referring to keeping the part that the center but goes onto you can seperate the cv axle and just use that part and completely eliminate the transfer case and inner cv axles you have to keep outer part the nut goes onto to keep you wheel bearing tight
I just bought a 99 subburban with the 246 and that tranfer case chain had completely ate thru the casing. I had no other choice to by another tranfer case . Chain hanging but still ran. Found another tranfer case for 100bucks now i just need to change my electric motor to the one i just got and put rear and front boots and its ready to roll.
You have the NP246 transfer case, they are notorious for pump rub wearing a hole in the case. They also have a bearing in the case for both front and rear driveshafts, the bearings have a plastic retainer that comes apart. Yours probably did and that's what your clicking is.
Yes the TC needs worked over, but removing the yoke from it, allows fluid to run out and it will eventually lock up. That hangup was probably the chain not meshing with sprockets.
Jeep guys can remove theirs because they have fixed yokes on both ends, not slide ins.
I have a 2000 Silverado push botton 4x4 it's safe to eliminate the 4x4 removing the driveshaft
I have an 04 dodge 2500. My transfer case ran dry because of a bad seal and started making noise. In a panic added oil to it and removed my front drive shaft (has a fixed yolk so no fluid leakage there) and the noise has completely went away. Want to get fixed eventually but don’t have the funds lol. My question is do you think it’ll be okay for the time being?
@@danielcharles7120 nope, the NP246 and 242 both need the front driveshaft splines in place for the seal to work properly. This does not have a fixed yolk, you cannot remove it without it draining the fluid.
@@chubbysumo2230 Then just remove the yoke from the u joint and reinstall.
@@danielcharles7120 If the transfer case itself is trashed pulling the driveshaft will do nothing.
Thank you for posting this video. My 98 Yukon has a noise coming from the front drive shaft. I believe it's the U-Joint. Unfortunately the U-Joint is very difficult to replace from what I was hearing. I think it's easier to replace the front shaft and call it a day.
Great intro new sub
Bro that intro got u another subscriber nbs
Thanks for the sub!
Man this is hilarious, well done
U high lmao
Just did this on my '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 350V8/SM465/NP205/D44 Front/12-Bolt 3.73 Rear. [My truck would be your truck's ancestor.] Front Prop Shaft has 1 u-joint after D44, then 2 u-joints [Double-Cardan] before the Xfer Case. Had a klunking, noticable during decelleration. I found one clip holding the u-joint bearing cap on the 2nd one had got lost, allowing the cap to open up off the uni and spill bearings. I thought it was a simple u-joint replacement, until I got it loose and found damage inside the Double-Cardan. The hard part was pulling the 4 capscrews [5/16-24 --2''] out of the back of the DC at the transfer case. The boltheads were trapped behind the Xfer Case mount. A hammerhandle thru the open u-joint holes held the DC from spinning. I could get a 1/2'' box end on it and turn the bolt 1/6th turn each time. Took me about 4 hours over 2 days. Afterward I secured the trapped bolt ends with 4 5/16-24 torque nuts, so they would not beat themselves to death while loose. New Prop Shaft is $650 at Jegs or $280 rebuilt from RockAuto. Without the front prop shaft, the Jimmy drives fine in 2WD.
Just need the rig to get to work until I can afford to fix it.
He sounded and looked like a total idiot during that introduction. I freaking loved it and was laughing my butt off.

Can't tell you for sure because those transfer cases do have some issues but it could of been your front diff too. Just see if you can find ways to diagnose the problem. Me personally I would start the easy stuff like taking apart the front diff for a good inspiration and if nothing is there obviously is the transfer case.
Helpful asfuckk!! Keep up the goood work👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
The transfer case has a chain drive what you are hearing is the chain slapping eventually the bearings will go bad because there are clutches inside the transfer case had the same thing happen to mind did not drive very long after it lockdown taking the front drive shaft will keep it from locking the front wheels but eventually it is the same gear that drives the back if the chain breaks and is out of the way you will be okay if it gets locked into the drive gear you will be stuck
Smart man
Also you will need to disconnect the front dif completely
The video is good to explain a transfer case and make one on that and I think that will solve your issue
Well, on my 2003 gmc 2500 diesel Duramax and she’s been rode hard and put away wet man! 350,000 miles and there’s one hell of a clunking And clicking going on as well. Except when I climbed underneath I discovered that the gears in my transfer case have eaten all the way through the outer case itself 😱 I figured I didn’t need that front driveshaft but what I’m wondering is do I even need to transfer case at all??
funny man subscribed!
sounds like the chain is broken in the transfer case.
Did you leave the holes exposed ? Or did you place some type of stopper in place.. my question is how did you stop the transmission fluid from running out ?
The transmission or t/c fluid wont run out. Its "caped"
I just replaced a cv axle on 94 Silverado. This week.
There’s was no seal on the transfer case side…🤷🏾♂️axle to case.
Not my vid, but this is what I saw on my as well czcams.com/video/XJ3q_yqqGQ8/video.html
mine had went out not to long ago, the planetary gear blew apart in it and just destroyed the rest of the transfer case. most of the time all this is caused my lack of lubrication!
4 years old now this video I doubt u still have the truck but for all those with this issue ..pull the front cv axles out of the diff as well as the front drive shafts and that is how u truly by pass and transform it from 4 wheel to permanent 2wd
I have a question is there any way to disconnect the four-wheel drive unit without taking out the drive shaft from the transfer case this is a 1992 Chevy S10 4x4
I wnat to know what position is the slip yoke goes on my ford expedition 2003 4x4 5.4 if it goes to the front or the back
can this same method be applied to 2wd box trucks and will transmission fluid leak?
Was the exhaust pipe in the way of removing the shaft?
By the way you can pick one up from Pull-A-Part for 70 bucks $10 for the back seal and about six bucks for the front gasket doesn't have to be perfect if you're not going to use for a drive just make sure it doesn't have leaks through the casing which is why they go bad the pump there's a hole in the bottom of the case
I paid $50 for a rear seal, I need to live wherever you do if they're only $10.
You could probably get a newer transfer case from any junkyard for $250. Definitely worth it!
I believe I may have to go that route.
The Daninator did you fix it?
my car broke down outve state I was I needed to replace rear differential ,driveshaft and rear axels is it possible to still drive it 8hrs ?
Amazing intro
Mr SS lol thanks
Yep and you can remove the rear drive shaft and drive with only the front one, you have to be in 4hi and of course you shouldn’t do this unless you don’t care about the truck, I bought a 02 suburban for 400 because the rear differential somehow got a hole in it when the previous owner was 4 wheeling in mud, he said I’d have to tow it, I got the keys from him hopped in, started it, put in 4hi and drove off, transmission had issues too, only went in 1st and 2nd and rarely 3rd, after a couple months of driving it like that just around town the rear differential started making a horrible noise, removed rear drive shaft and problem was solved, kept driving it another few months until I moved out of state and let my brother have it to do whatever with, he left it sitting for awhile and it got towed but that thing would’ve kept driving like that for a long time, pretty crazy, nice work Chevy
That’s amazing
Maybe my main issue with my Journey, once they said at the dealership the front shaft was missing a rubber guard
this video look like it was filmed in 2007, i like it
i bougbt a bmw and it was missing front shaft so i bet they removed it for a reasone. i hope i can still drive the car like that bmw said i can is normal but is not longer 4 wheels. drive. any advice tips.
First guys keep your differential filled with 75-90 synthetic you might have to replace a seal or two
Your chain is probably banging around in the transfer case chewing up all the gears now
If you have locking hubs you can
Of course you can drive without a front drive shaft. My transfer case had a hole and all the fluid leaked out. Since there was no fluid in the transfer case, it started to make a whining noise. Didn't know there was a hole until it was inspected. Remove front drive shaft. Still runs without problems.
Can you tell me how you control the leaking please
@@abubakarmahfoudh2680 let it all leak out or drain it, your not going to be using the transfer case anyway. If you remove your front drive axles.
@clintonbirdsr.8598 but wouldn't your gears inside the differential get hot
Same thing happened to me. Did the noise disappear after you removed the front drive shaft?
i got a 94 gmc jimmy rat rodded and i just removed this piece of junk
im now hitting the low 7s so
i totally recommend this if youre not going to take the vehicle off road
EviL AnGel can you put it in 4wd low still?
aaron phillips Again #NO
I have a 1976 f100 4wd and never use the friggin 4wd and really want to lower the truck for a classic look could I also do this to lower it
I live in the city if I take it off the front shaft is not going to affect ? I got a 2000 chevy s10
Hi I have question I have 97 Yukon, electric 4x4 I want swap the stock differential drum brakes.i want put a 14 bolt pumpkin differential with disc brakes is it just about swapping them .and Wath year of vehicles can I use .thank you your advice could help me
Interesting video I had a 1986 VW Syncro [all wheel drive] Vanagon. [2,200 cc water-cooled flat four]
Came time to replace the 4 half shafts.
Driving only with the rears wheels turning corners was a bear.
The Vanagon did not want to complete any turn right or left. It was hard to keep it out of the roadside ditch.
Driving only with the front wheels, control was about normal.
Driving with all 4 CV shafts the Synco system was fine.
Hell yea . Thanks . I am currently taking my off my dakota. Was curious if it would still drive. Rear wheel obviously. .. Hahaha hell yea. Totally answered my questions.
Did it work, I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 4x4 and the truck wont move because the 4x4 is stuck in neutral. Thanks!
So the dive shaft turns while u drive even if u not in 4 wheel drive minds sould like it's binding my back wheels will move then the front sponds like it's locked up
The intro 😂
I wish I could do this to my AWD mines not busted yet but my front diff is making a humming noise like a wheel bearing but only when you accelerate after 40 mph
From what I understand it’s not in the cards
Guess I’ll have to buy a junkyard tc and rebuild it
Your front differential and transfers case are two different components. The transfer case connects to the end of the driveshaft at the transmission and the differential connects to the other end in the front.
So does that make the truck rear wheel drive only?
so what will happen if you engage 4L?
Does gear oil leak out
Theres no need to use a paint pen it all goes right back on how it comes off
How fast were you going ?
You should check into replacing the transfer case with a tailshaft from a two wheel drive transmission. It should be acheap junkyard fix that will eliminate the transfer case altogether.
Charles Livsey does that mean it could be a regular 2wd ?
@@Treyes92 yes
i got a awd 4l65e and would like to make it a 2wd
@@trukplug just take off the front shaft

I have been driving a 1992 suburban with out the front drive shaft for over 10 years because the drive shaft rusted throught and i wasn't needing 4 wheel drive anyways.
Can I change a awd equinox to just front wheel drive?
I change the transfer case, but now I feel a vibration from the drive line
lol
tool chest going down the stairs could likely just take out the stairs and go straight to the next level below.
this is funny
Is it leaking fluid from transfere case without the driveshaft yoke in it
What i was wondering....🤔
Yes it will. You can not run these without a front driveshaft. His is already junk so didn’t matter anyway. If the driveshaft bolted on a yoke at transfer case like it bolts to the front diff then you can take driveshaft off and run it.
@@kennethbouch7796 Bullshit.
my front drive shaft wont turn by hand in park, does that mean my transfer case is fine?
Is it in neutral ?
Yes unless you can roll the tires with your arms
@@ll0366 Don't have to be in neutral. It should spin freely if it's in 2wd. Might just need a little nudge.
@@tomholskey992 ah i have full time 4x4 so i have to be in neutral

Would this work on a full-time 4 wheel drive jeep grand Cherokee with a bad front diff.?
whay about if I remove the Gear shaft
This is very educational
Anyone know if the transfer case will leak now that the drive shaft is removed becUse it slips into the transfer case? Thanks
I don't think this will work with my 2005 Sierra Denali AWD. I needs the clutch packs loaded.
I hit a deer with my truck and it spin me around and sent me into about a 5feet deep dich I blow out my tire and crushed my rime and it cracked my front differential it has like a wide crack like 2 inch wide and all the gear oils had drained all out so I pulled both side out the truck cvc shafts out and I just want to know if I can leave the front drive shaft still hooked up cent the cvc are out would dose it spind the hole time and if I want to take out the front drive shaft from the front differential and unhook it from the transfer case........ sorry it a 05 nissan frontier 4.0 v6
Your wheels will fall off and it will chew up the bearing and rotors without the axles.
I need a transfer case for a 01 Tahoe mechanic showed me the play when he rotated the front driveshaft you could hear clunking inside! I've seen the rebuilt kits but would a junkyard have a transfer case cheap! Anybody in Illinois know Ty!
Sure they will. Replace it.should be less than $250
Sell the car burn your credit cards and move to buttfuck nowhere
Will it be bad to drive 2 Wheel drive like that in the snow, will it fish tail all the way down the road.
2 wheel drive in the snow is not pretty in the Yukon, especially if there are any hills.
I gotta jump in here, if you disconnect the transfer case from the front differential, what difference does it make if the axles are still in there.....None!
Well yeh, they hold the hub and wheel together. :')
I wouldn’t belive a technician if it wasnt laid out any differently lol
how is it moving without the front driveshat transferring power to the rear wheels?? there is nothing connecting engine to rear driveshaft?? what am i missing
Good grief....lmao
Any vehicle with front and rear drive has two driveshafts. The front driveshaft works in unison with the rear one depending on what gear your in but, they are separate.
Is it still working without the drive shaft?
It did just fine up until I junked the whole thing at a salvage yard this past summer. Honestly, I probably should have just left in on. Removing it didn't really help ease the noise coming from the transfer case like I hoped it would.
It sounds like you were opening and closing a door in Minecraft😳🥲
Pulling the front driveshaft will not fix a messed up case. The transfer case itself still spins, it's just not engaged in 4wd. It would work if it were an electric 4wd and the motor or switch was bad. But not if the case itself was clanging and banging.
I have electric 4wd and it's stuck in 4lo. I have to get to work and don't want to fuck anything up. Is is ok to pull the drive shaft for a day until I can get it fixed ?
If anyone knows and could help my 2006 Chevy Tahoe z71 4x4 is having the same problem with my transfer case. I’ve removed the front drive shaft off and now it’s not able to drive. What other steps could be done here
Why can’t you drive it without the front shaft??
Will the transfer case leak
Take the axles out so the diff doesn't spin while your wheels are rolling
You gotta tape the open part open from removing the drive shaft.
The 2001 4l80E has a slip shaft and yoke for the front shaft … there’s no hole for the fluid to fly out
No rock scientist
The introduction was the best part of you hate that you literally have no sense of humour 🤣🤣🤣
You have to remove the front diff and replace your hubs with 2 wheel drive front hubs. because the bearing is held together with the axle. I tried just separating the axle but that didn't work for me.
You don't need to do that. Pull the axles and driveshaft, and get two large bolts that will slip through the splines along with appropriate washers, to keep tension on the hub assy's in place of the axles.
Me I just took a grinder and cut the end off the cv axle
@@clintonbirdsr.8598how did everything work for you ? Is she still running good after bypass
@@clintonbirdsr.8598is that still holding up I wanna do the same with my 1997 Yukon but I don’t know if it’s safe or not when I came up with the idea I thought it was great but I just want to ensure that it will work
Sounds like a stretched chain in the transfer case.
Willie Jacobs yes, I believe that was the case
If I pull the fuse out for the transfer case on a 96 suburban will it stay in 2wd?
That makes sense. No power to the case means you couldn't hit the button and make it go into 4wd.
The Daninator yup
Ur chain inside is streached out, same with mine, it tore a hole in the tranfer case.
jeffery pent Yup, bummer
Mines has the same issue how do you fix this?
Can you disconnect front drive shaft on a grand Cherokee
If you haven’t figured it out already... yes
Yes you can. I did it on my 04
Just wanted to note that not all GMs will function without the front driveshaft. Hummer H3's for example.

That voice though. Call Matt Groening. He’ll give you a job.
I just removed my front driveshaft today from my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2l V8 just to save on some gas.
@Northern Tread I'm not sure how that year is set up but you should be able to. Mine is a 97. See if they are set up the same before you try.
Did it help your truck accelerate better? Mine drives kinda slow at first
Kid From Burke can’t say that it did.
Can I do the same thing if it is stuck in 4 wheel drive
If you're talking Ford, Yes, but you may want to have a transmission shop turn the 4WD off if the dash light stays active. Or maybe someone can tell us how to do it here. Anybody?
The case will still be in 4wd. Chevy you can manually click the case into 2wd.
The down fall is the trucks transmission doesn't hold the truck while in park. The truck will roll foreword or backward as if it's in neutral.
Lmao that is stupid and wrong.
Wtf foo
Transfer case needs overhaul you might try the shift motor inexpensive to replace you can do it yourself but if it’s inside it’s better to find a used one than to try and overhaul it yourself can and will get expensive it’s a transmission remember that it has clutches and gears in it good luck
Eric Narvaiz i just rebuilt transfer case in my 2006 h3 hummer. Damn thing is still jumping outta gear. I determined that its not electrical. Dont really know what to do next. Tired of working on it.
The motor will not make it sound like it's chewing gravel. Obviously you shouldn't be commenting advice.
I am thinking about removing my back wheel drive shaft, making my 4x4 a front wheel drive, is there any danger of damaging something running in 4 wheel drive mode with only one drive shaft going to the front wheels?
You cant remove the rear only the front. If you rear drive shaft that hooks to the back of you transmission dont spin how are you suppose to drive?
@@brandonbowden1706 If I engage the four wheel drive, 50% of the power goes to the front and 50% to the back. So it will be a front wheel drive car then.
@@BagheeraTube Lmao nooooo. Do not do that. You can't just drive a 4x4 only using the front axle because the front axle isnt meant to be driven by itself as a means to move the vehicle. You will absolutely detonate the transfer case and front axle.
@@chimichangapoops6244 Do you have any facts or experience to back that claim with?

Are you still able to drive the Yukon now? Question will transfer case destroy your transmission?
I no longer have the Yukon. I drove it to the salvage yard, however.
