  • In a special 'on-the-road' episode of Tyrrell's Classic Workshop, Iain is invited to do some work at an important stop for car enthusiasts around the globe, the Franschhoek Motor Museum, near Cape Town, South Africa. For his visit, they specially remove from exhibition one of the most iconic (not to say valuable) British post-war sports cars, the 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT, this particular example one of only 49 RHD coupes.
With thanks to Wayne Harley and all the team at FMM for making Iain so welcome.
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.
This video was created with the support of A House of Cars: ahouseofcars.com/

It drank petrol like a fish drinks water and at £1.02 a gallon I was always broke. My father tuned the twin SU's exactly the same way and it ran beautifully from then on. Especially since they complained the cars don’t get much of a work out. It is a great place to visit though and is located in a very picturesque part of South Africa.

He raced motor bikes at the speedway when he was young and I remember him driving my Father and me on dirt roads at 80 MPH steering with one hand and rolling a Ciggarett with the other going around corners sideways without slowing down ! he was the car wisperer to me , He was my Hero !

Fransch Hoek = Dutch for French Corner. Settled by Protestant French Huguenot refugees after King Louis XIV cancelled the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which had awarded limited tolerance to Protestants and who resumed Protestant persecution by confiscation of their wine estates. They fled to the Dutch refreshment settlement at the Cape of Good Hope, which has a Mediterranean climate and terroir much like the south of France, and established the wine industry of South Africa there back in the 1690s.

What a joy that was. When I was a young second officer on the VC10 with BOAC I had a Lotus Cortina ex Norwhich cars Racing spec and I purloined a pair of IFE old style acoustic earphones from a Jumbo positioning flight. They were just perfect for listening to the trumpets of the Webers and allowed me to do just what you did to the `Aston' . A trip down memory lane and so enjoyable. Mind you they dont stay in tune for long. I dont know what it is but they always seem to need adjusting, vibration maybe? I just wish I still had the Lotus.

Imagine being such an expert at your craft that someone is willing to fly you to the other side of the world to help them out. Fantastic.

I could tell the quality of your work with one 2 second clip of this video at 15:12. When you handed the screwdriver over, it was so precise. Firmly held in your hand until positively accepted in the other guy's hand. No chance of dropping it and scratching the car or damaging the tool. Treating tools and equipment with respect.

Lovely video Iain and your silence when the South African dude said that the car had 'run perfectly on a Top Gear shoot,' was priceless.
You and Harry should do a road trip together.

These videos are awesome, such a treat. So sad that now it is a case of plugging in a laptop and tuning by 0s and 1s, but even sadder is that eventually there will be no engines to tune in new cars.

A Very beautiful part of the World! My GGG grandfather was born 20 Kilometers from there! Most of the farms are amongst the first to be settled in what would become South Africa by French Huguenot refugees escaping religious persecution in the 1600's .Most of the farms produce wine today in what has to be one of the best climates in the World. Just the place to go and perve on auto History!

People always comment on how well my vehicles run. I've always tuned my vehicles by ear. What folk don't realise is everything else needs to be perfect before you can tune a car correctly. If your engine is tired or has issues you'll never get it running silky smooth. Always a pleasure watching you setup these old webbers. At the moment my car is fitted with SU's. I doubt there are a handful of V8 Rovers in the country actually setup correctly.

Aren’t they awful? The thing that is so so annoying is, that they do the same sequence of pops over and over again. Plain dumb.

Wonderful car and very well done video, this is when British engineering almost across the board was at its very best, thanks Iain and the fabulous museum facility.

The carburettor tuning & balance is very similar to the procedure I use to set up the triple Mikuni carbs on my Suzuki GT750 two stroke triple motor. What looks both more complicated yet much easier on the DB4 GT carbs than on my Mikunis is that there are several adjustment screws on each carburettor. Each “circuit” is capable of being adjusted, the ease of doing so varying tremendously. Typically, you can readily adjust idle mixture, by varying the the amount of air (screw on the air filter end of the carb) or fuel (screw on the engine end of the carb) into that circuit.
The transition into the jet needle, needle jet and main jet each require different adjustments. On my Mikunis, these cannot be done while the motor is running, though the throttle controlled “butterfly” valves that affect balance, certainly can be. The other adjustments are made by altering clip positions of the needle, or it’s taper and diameter or jet size.
How Ian does all this just by listening to the hiss down a piece of hose in lieu of properly calibrated vacuum gauges is beyond me. The additional instruments he’s using are his ears and his whole body, sensitive to the sweetness of the note of the engine and it’s smoothness.
