Hydroforming Infinity Symbol in Inflated Steel

  • Another experiment with DIY pressure washer Hydroforming, to discover what is possible with the process. I was unsure that this shape would inflate fully, as the sections crossing each other compete to occupy the same 2D plane, which I had never attempted before with previous shapes.
    The experiment was a success and I was very pleased with the result, so I then polished the piece and made a simple base for display as a tabletop sculpture.

    hydroforming's most common practical application, for those who don't know, is making exhausts for 2-stroke motorcycles, ATVs, and dirtbikes. It helps to have a bulbous trumpet-like expansion chamber to aid with what is known as exhaust scavenging

      Ah yes. Hydroforming. The best way to get sufficient levels of gnarly brappitude and maximalized vroomitation.
      Those are highly technical terms that describe the ball blasting go-fastization that 2 strokes are known for!
      It’s all thanks to hydroforming.

      @@DanteYewToob Do the tires on your motorcycle provide maximum Grip-tion!
      I actually heard a man use that word when I was with friends at a mud hole. I believe he said, "That Feller got stuck cuz dem tires ain't got nuff Grip-tion!" "He shud-da got dem Thorny Birds tires! They got all da Grip-tion ya'll needs." 🤔 I think he meant Thornbirds but who knows. 😄

    I was going to ask why you didn't use a plasma cutter but you are so skilled with that throatless shear. Your tig welding is also amazing. Only having one pinhole on the first try is not easy to do. Great work and a cool piece of art!

      Thank you very much! I'm planning to get a plasma cutter, when I need to cut curves in thicker metal, or cut using templates

    Very cool. Do you anneal the heat affected zone of the weld? Might help delay leaks and get a bit more inflation.

    • @ConnorHolland
      @ConnorHolland  Před rokem

      Thanks, I use mild steel, which is not not suited for annealing I think

    Project suggestion - have a look at the characters in "Chicken Run" and make one of the chickens out of metal. Sincerest form of flattery as they say.

    Very cool video Connor. Can I ask what type of tig torch you are using? I haven,t seen one with a clear shield before.

    • @ConnorHolland
      @ConnorHolland  Před 2 lety

      It's a WP26 torch that came with the machine, and I have attached a 'gas saver': migtigarc.co.uk/wp171826-short-gas-saver-set-up-336-c.asp

    Try walking the cup and using the arc to "cut" a slice of the filler wire. I found this more successful than welding they way you showed.

    hi, after it is inflated, it look thin, why dont want to look rounder how to do it?

    • @ConnorHolland
      @ConnorHolland  Před rokem

      It needed more pressure to be rounder, but the welds were not strong enough as they were sanded down before inflating, for aesthetics. Inflating more would have caused ripples/dents to form along the edges, which I wanted to avoid

    Do you think it might work with the Möbius strip?

    • @ConnorHolland
      @ConnorHolland  Před 2 lety +2

      Possibly, although a majority of the forming would be done by hammering, as inflation would want to straighten it out
