Kaley's pediatrician alerted her parents after noticing a small curve in her spine during her physical exam. The doctors advised not to worry and to watch and wait. Two months later, Kaley's appearance started drastically changing as a result of her scoliosis rapidly worsening.
After running two X-Rays on Kaley, they confirmed the curve on her spine was at 44 degrees. The treatment expectations for Kaley were not looking good. The doctors again told her to watch out for any progressions and that she might need surgery to correct this problem.
The initial recommendation for mild cases of scoliosis is to wait and see what happens because the standard treatment often put the patient at risk and tend to be very invasive.
Dr. Tony Nalda disagrees with this point of view and stated that reducing the curve while it's still small is the best approach possible.
Kaley's scoliosis was already classified as severe when she reached out to Dr. Nalda. He explains that this classification, combined with the fact that she is still growing, puts her at high risk of worsening every time she grows.
To help Kaley, Dr. Nalda uses the center's scoliosis brace called ScoliBrace. This is a corrective style brace that works along with therapy to push scoliosis and reduce it. In Kaley's case, the best treatment approach was intensive care; this takes traditional exercises and applies them quickly for short periods.
Thanks to Dr. Nalda's chiropractic approach, Kaley's curvature has decreased from 49 degrees to 40 degrees in 4 days. Not only is it visible in Kaley's current X-Rays, but at plain sight, her shoulders and ribs have returned to a more aligned position.

In 1979 I was diagnosed with severe scoliosis. I wore the Boston brace for several years, barbaric and it didn’t help. I was also placed in the Milwaukee brace for part of the time. By 1981 I had a 75 degree curve and I was devastated. Neither braces had been enough to stop the curve, and I was referred by my Dr. to have surgery. In 1981, Honolulu Hawaii, Shriners hospital is where I was at for my surgery. I had my lower back fused, the last four discs are fused, and I had a 14” Harrington rod placed in my back. I was in the hospital for a month, part of the time I was in traction and couldn’t move. I checked into the hospital and spent my 14th birthday at the hospital! A whole month of being away from my family and friends! I only had one follow up appointment, I waited six months to get my cast off! That was the end of wearing braces for me!! I guess the surgery was a success! I went into the hospital 5’5, and one month later I was 5’8, my curve was 45* I grew 3” in one month!! The only thing my Dr told me was not to get into a car wreck!! I didn’t have a car wreck until 2004! Then I was rear - ended at 45 mph! That was the end of my career! Until that time I worked juvenile corrections! I didn’t ever want to consider myself disabled, or disadvantaged! I tried my best to hide my differences and I was happy to work!! I didn’t want anybody’s empathy or a special pass to sit down!! Until this day, I have had severe PTSD from the trauma of the hospitals and Dr.’s. I could write a book on the tragic events that transpired in the hospital, that caused me so much distrust in Dr.’s But I survived ~ and I am here to share my experience with whomever reads this. Most of my younger adult life went unaffected. It was after my car wreck that my life took a devastating turn. 17 years of losing my ability to walk, or stand. Sitting is better, or laying down, but it’s not better for long. At my last MRI, they discovered that my curve is getting worse. It’s 63*, so it’s went from the 45* after surgery, to back to 63*. It’s been almost 40 years! I am 53 and I am nowhere near the health of my youth. Looking down the road of options for me ~ I don’t have any options. Managing my pain and trying to find a purpose again. I can’t really say there’s a silver lining in my story ~ except for the fact I survived the surgery and wasn’t paralyzed, and I was able to work almost 20 years after my surgery! I guess that’s my silver lining! Be well and thank you for letting me share my story with you.
