Like many adolescents, Susie and her mother were told to monitor her scoliosis after the initial diagnosis. Susie was experiencing an asymmetrical shift in her shoulders and pain during physical education class at school. After a year of waiting, the pediatrician recommended that they see a specialist. Susie’s mom researched specialists in her area and was fortunate to find the Scoliosis Reduction Center nearby. Dr. Nalda informed them that Susie’s curve was considered severe. Susie was a candidate for surgery, but Dr. Nalda believes that surgery should be the last resort. In January of 2021, Susie’s spine had a 56 degree curve. In March of 2021, her spine’s curve was reduced to 43 degrees, which means she’s barely within the threshold for surgery. Dr. Nalda’s goal is to reduce it below 40 degrees, which he believes to be attainable. Susie went from what could have been a life altering surgery to simply maintaining her scoliosis.
