  • In this Fine Art Photography video entitled, "photograph what you want to see", I show how a good knowledge of post-processing can change your outlook on how you perceive a scene you're presented with.
I also take one of the largest panorama's I have ever post-processed to a high fine art standard. a marathon 6 hours on one image. The burning question is... did you think it was worth it?
I hope you like the video

Hi Gary. I love and am totally motivated with your coastal fine art landscape images but here is the thing, how would you apply your skills and knowledge to a scene that does lot have any water? Is it possible to create a fine art image without that element? What would replace the water when you do not have any? How can you make a standard landscape with only the sky and the land into a fine art image. I ask this because I am surrounded with great countryside but no water. I would have to travel a distance to get to the coast which I will do, but I don’t want to ignore what is around me. That is your challenge! I wait with baited breath for your response. Regards Paul in Cheshire

@@paulwilcock4351 I think with land, especially with vegetation long exposure fine arts become a bit messy as the movement in trees/plants/grass can look weird. But I guess in a scenario where there is a building in the middle of nowhere, with some immovable structures or say even some layers of land which looks incredible with the effect of light; and adding some movement in the clouds, I guess you can capture some fine art landscapes. If it's a farming area, tractors, silos and so on are beautiful subjects in the foreground. Also when it comes to wonderful looking trees, I guess stacking/layering multiple photographs can help in creating some beautiful photographs. All the best Paul.

This makes so much more sense now. I’ve always wondered how people are getting these epic isolated subjects in camera. I thought people weren’t photoshopping things out. But understanding that this is “fine art (possibly crossing into digital art)” and not pure photography makes me feel better about photoshopping unwanted stuff out.

Well said Gary regarding Fine Art as this subject is so subjective.
I was wondering around a picturesque town not far from where I live. When I noticed 2 horses in a field by the road side fence. Before I even turned on the camera I knew what was going to do the image. Fine Art !
It is in my top 5 highest viewed / voted image on ePhotozine and viewbug web site !

It's all been said below Gary. A brilliant video with a stunning result. But you do raise a good point which I suspect, a lot of us can't answer. I know what I see, and I know what I don't want to see, but I don't know what I want to see. I don't have an artist's mind so forseeing an end result just doesn't happen. I play with Lightroom and Photoshop and get good results but the end result is not envisaged, and something like this would never have dawned on me in a month of Sundays without watching this blog.. A big thank you. I wiill go and "play" but it will be a voyage of discovery and trying to follow you rather than a planned and thought out route.
    In admiration and awe, Mike

I know Pin Mill very well having visited mostly by sea since the 60's as a small child in my parents boats and then in my own as an adult. I have seen many vessels gradually return to nature. Many of them ended their working life here including some Thames sailing barges and lived out their remaining years as house boats. It has been a Barge slip for many years and still hosts the Pin Mill Sailing barge race once a year. Your images are the absolute best Ive seen or taken of this place. Thank you so much for sharing Gary.

Gary, that final image was exceptional. You have created some amazing fine art images but I think this one is my favourite. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong in creating an image to look how you want. There is far too much snobbery in photography about removing or adding items and people saying how you always have to get it right it camera or it’s not true photography. Absolute nonsense! These are the same people that still use post processing to add colour, contrast etc. An image should be what you want it to be. Unless you are a documentary photographer where you are recording exactly what is happening, then you are only limited by your own creative mind.
Love your attitude towards photography as well as your images. Fantastic 👍🏻

If you were taking a 'documentary' photograph and manipulated it to your own 'truth'. It would be a 'lie'. To take a photograph that represents your ' mind's eye' is simply a view-point. A personal interpretation of the 'story' you wish to tell. You are a very good 'story-teller' and I appreciate the 'stories' you have to tell.

The thing you taught us here is that: wherever you go, if your skills are good enough: you will have one of a kind picture.
Because it was YOUR vision. It is stunning, as usual. I didn’t know one could spend that amount of time on a photo. To answer your question: of course it was worth it, and hopefully you are proud of your work. I know I am.
As of the place, it reminds me of the videos you made of one of the Hebrides islands a while back: I wonder if no one cares about abandoned/rotten/polluting boats/cars/houses in U.K.? It is fun for an adventurous mind like us, but tragic to watch for me.

Gary, I love watching your videos. I'm 37 and have learned so much from you. I use this video for reference every few months. One thing I would have loved for you to shoot is the scene at 8:14 and only keep the 3 main bows. I think it would add to the drama by having three stacked upon each other. If you ever go back -- or do another followup to this -- you should grab that shot for me/us :-)
