Gowron is one of the most fun side characters. His crazy eyes and cokehead-edgelord declarations are hilarious. "Your blood will paint the way to the future, Duuuuraaaas."
Yeah Robert O'Reilly really did an amazing job in the role. Never blinked once on-camera.
This is another thing from the 'let aliens be alien' category: The cliché would have been that Riker says 'no!' and Worf realizes it's senseless to kill Duras, killing doesn't solve anything, and Duras either lives or does something stupid to get himself killed by the good guys. Instead, Riker says 'no!' and Worf... just runs Duras through. It's his right according to every fiber in his being and no one can tell him otherwise.
K'Ehleyr's death was extremely shocking back in the day. Very unusual and unexpected, even with the precedent of Tasha. That some main character was killed in Skin of Evil was given away in the trailer, though not specifically who.
Worf's immediate revenge was nearly as shocking because TV didn't much do this back then. It was like you said, a contrived death for Duras would have been used to spare staining Worf with what would be called mur**r in most (if not all) current day Earth jurisdictions.
I suspect it's another case where TNG was able to do things as a first run syndicated show that a network would never have allowed back then.
A network would likely also have forced the episode to make it quite clear Duras was ultimately responsible for the explosion and poisoning of K'mpec to further justify his fate.
It's heavily implied Duras was responsible for the explosion, though not remotely proven. Could have been a rogue member of his team or whatever.
Who was responsible for poisoning K'mpek is never established at all. K'mpek believed it was either Gowron or Duras, but no evidence is given showing this. It might be neither of them.
Another cliché Hollywood likes to do is Worf lets Duras live, and then turns his back on him. Suddenly Duras reaches for a hidden knife from his boot and Worf is forced to kill him in self defense. All is well, no reprimands.
Worf: (Kills foreign leader)
Picard: This is going on your permanent record
And why not? Worf was a bad, bad boy.
Similar thing happens in DS9 and, without spoiling it, it's a very meaningful difference that while Sisko gives him an even harsher "official" dressing down, he also says he'd have done the same thing in Worf's position.
To be honest the DS9 Klingon stuff mostly works for me better than the TNG stuff but that's probably because I'm not a big fan of the Duras family as villains.
Now we get crazy-eyes Gowron! Hurray!
Yeah, those eyes!
Notice that there was no cry to Sto-Vo-Kor no call to the other side that a warrior would be awaiting to enter the city. Even among his own crew Duras was unworthy. All hail Gowron, son of M'Rel leader of destiny!
RIP Jon Paul Steuer, the first boy to play Alexander Rozhenko
I always like when they let Worf be more Klingon than Starfleet. Killing Duras this season, last season with the injured Romulan "Then he will die."
A true watershed moment for TNG. Worf's scene with Picard, where he gets the dressing-down, is excellent. Suzie Plakson was fantastic, both here, earlier, and in later Trek.
Suzie Plakson is super under-rated. She's up there among the actors who have played the most characters in Star Trek. Unfortunately, she was so good that a lot of people never noticed!
I don't think I've seen anybody so literally taken aback with surprise as Katrina literally hurling herself backwards out of frame in her chair at the end of the cold open.
I feel your pain. I was not happy when they killed K'Ehleyr. She kicked ass.
Kalar was like Star Trek's Wonder Woman. A bit of a loner. An outcast. Never fitting in. But heroic. A warrior. Genuine. With that gleam in her eyes. :)
Literally every fan of Trek was pissed at K'Ehleyr's fate and what a waste of an awesome, charismatic character it was, even the writers. That's why Suzie Plakson gets more Trek work (as different characters) in Voyager and Enterprise.
She was a fun character, but if they didn't kill her, Worf wouldn't have gotten such an epic character arc. The repeated tragedies of Worf's life really shape who he is.
I had forgotten about Kehleyr and what a great character she is.
characters like these further cement the fact that the writers of Picard and STD didn't even read the cover of the DVDs of TNG.
Paula letting her DS9 "ops" creep in to her TNG "bridge" :D
God I hope they react to DS9.
@@Bobsmith-xq2pr same. It's been my favorite so far
@@Bobsmith-xq2pr doubtful, Paula only recently finished watching all of it, and she has stated, isnt the biggest fan of it. I'd love to see them react to the pilot episode after Drumhead, though. really nail down the impact the federation felt after Picard was assimilated. then follow up with something like First Contact movie.
It could still make for a good reaction.
@@dustinherk8124 DS9 started Airing right after the Chain of Command 2 parter in S6. That's long enough away I can see Paula ready to give it another shot and I do think it's something Katrina would really like. Kira (along with B'elanna from Voy) has some strong K'Ehylar vibes I think she'd get behind.
I know it doesn't make it better but I've never assumed that K'Ehleyr is helpless in the confrontation with Duras. She is a warrior after all. Clearly she never calls security either when Duras arrives or after. I think she believes she can take Duras if it comes to that and, in my head canon, she almost succeeds in doing so. I prefer to remember K'Ehleyr as an absolute badass and the acting by Suzie Plakson and Michael Dorn is so electric in this episode that I can't hate it even though it makes me cry every time I watch it.
Agreed. She didn't even hesitate in calling Duras out as a traitor and she must have known what that meant. Her whole job in this episode was to provide Picard with details on Klingon culture, so there's no way she didn't know how Duras would react.
I think she thought she could take him and he probably cheated in some way to win, being the coward that he is.
@@Helbore What was your first clue? The patak brought a knife to fist fight with a woman.
Killing K'Ehleyr in such a treacherous and underhanded tactic made us hate the Duras family even more. Plus it fits into their persona of being dishonorable Ferengis.
I kind of appreciate the decision they made. It’s a reminder (not that it is needed), that good people die for no reason in the blink of an eye.
To bring up something else besides the heavy material re: K'Ehleyr, I have always loved the implication of the Klingon 'sonchi' ceremony. Based on the translation subtitles, 'sonchi' literally means 'He's dead.' So it's the 'He's Dead' ceremony. What happened in Klingon history that it became a tradition to test the bodies of deceased high level personages, to make sure they're not faking? Who tried to fake their death, and to get out of what? It had to be a big damn scandal, to make it important enough to become a ceremony, so it would never happen again. That's a story worth telling.
The hardest hitting part of Kelar's death scene is when Worf does the yell and Alexander is frightened.
Jon Paul Steuer, who played Alexander, tragically committed suicide on New Year's Day 2018, at the age of 33.
RIP.
Suicide at 33. That's fucking tragic. Can't imagine what must have driven him to that. So sad.
The episode that gave us both the new Vor'cha-Class Klingon ship and the man with the most famous eyes in the whole of Star Trek, Gowron! Such a legend! I also love the death scene in this. It's definitely so Klingon how Worf makes Alexander come and look at his Mother's mangled, bloody body. Finally, Worf's vengeance scene at the end is awesome. That moment where Worf tells all the Klingons that K'ehleyr was his mate and even Duras is like "Oh shit!"
Also the episode that first introduced us to the bat'leth if I remember correctly.
well, second most famous eyes, after Geordi :) but definitely the most fun eyes!
The little boy who played Alexander died a few years back, very sad, RIP
True, but I feel it's worth pointing out that he was 33 when he died - not a little boy.
Well one is. Jon Steur only played Alexander for ONE episode (This one) and yes he passed in 2018 RIP.
Brian Bonsall, played him for he duration of the series run and has had frequent run ins with the law.
anyone ever see death/dieing close up? You never forget, you lose a piece of yourself ... rip everyone lost And I miss you mom and dad.
Every time Katrina said "I love her so fucking much" I couldn't help but sigh heavily.
On the other hand, now we get to see Worf as a single dad! It brings a whole new dynamic to the character, and his future relationships!
Only her death would have made Worf kill Duras. Anything less and he would have let it go for another time.
Agreed. Even though I really liked her character, her dying was necessary in order for the story to be as effective as it is. Easily a 5/5 episode.
To get to where they wanted to go one fo four people needed to be killed. Alexander,
@@sahtiryyppy Agreed. Killing off a beloved character is the right way to kill a character. Too many times movies and TV shows kill a character we've known for 5 minutes and my reaction is "Whatever bro I don't care".
Katrina's the best....she's an egalitarian and very caring and loving...her tears make this show all worth it.
Hugs for Katrina, this is so sad. I called my kitten K'ehlar in the 90s.
Politically speaking, this was a very sticky situation for Picard. Had Duras lived and won the fight in the Rite of Succession, Picard would have been duty-bound to name him Emperor of the Klingon Empire. If Duras had become Emperor, he likely would have continued to work in secret with the Romulans - possibly eventually resulting in an open pact between the two empires. If that happened, the Federation would have been done and dusted: there's no way Starfleet could have fought off both empires simultaneously.
In short, as much as he had to reprimand Worf for killing Duras, a small part of him had to be relieved it happened.
Federation intelligence would have discovered the truth of duras’ family and once the betrayal at Kitemir was revealed it would have ripped the Klingon ‘Empire apart. The federation would have seen the closening ties of the Romulans and Klingons and worked to disrupt it.
You forget that the federation is very resourceful and has always overcome seemingly over powered enemies. They would have found a way to prevail whether it be by more alliances, diplomacy or other things. Not to mention secretion 51 operating behind the lines, infiltrating the Romulans.
God damn I love this show so much. This was one of the heavier episodes.
Suzie Plakson is/was gorgeous...But she ROCKED as a Vulcan :)
I adore her, good strong performance here. She plays a female Q on "Star Trek: Voyager" and was Marshall's mom on "How I Met Your Mother".
So cool the younger bunch getting into The Next Generation. Good times. : D
I hope we get to see your reactions to Deep Space Nine someday. To me Deep Space Nine had the best story writing and covered LOTS of topics.....Especially when it gets to the Dominion War!!!
Kaylar, like the mother from Lost in Space, is an absolute fuckin force to be reckoned with!
Paula kept those cards well hidden and Poker face was en pointe!
Vengeance is deeply embedded in Klingon culture, it's a miracle they ever became a spacefaring civilization.
This one is always really hard to watch, but it pays off in spades through the rest of this series and DS9.
I feel for you Katrina (Paula as well). I loved K'EHleyr also. I hate she was killed off.
"Are you my father?"
"Yes... I am your father."
(cut to Mark Hamill)
"No! No!! That's not true... That's impossible!"
LOL! I had the image of Vader in my head as Worf said it; funnily enough, it was the first time I ever made the link between the two scenes.
She played Marshall's mother on "How I Met Your Mother" : )
I have seen How I Met Your Mother twice! How the hell did I not notice!
omg
With an honorable (no pun intended) mention of the episode Family, this now marks the third big chapter in Worf's story, first with The Emissary, then with Sins of the Father, now we have Reunion. He has such a great arc, across both TNG and DS9, but this is really still just the beginning of it.
We live at a time of streaming content and para-social relationships, where we connect much more with even minor characters in the media we consume and watch. In shows like TNG and other genre shows of the time, writers very often made decisions not based on their personal enjoyment or fan love of a particular character, but more on getting the plot of a show, or story of a protagonist (typically male) or antagonist where they wanted it or them to be. The list of characters dying in genre shows to further the plot of another main character is as long as your arm for the 80's, 90's and the 00's.
Often this meant that minor characters (and too often characters of color or women or lgbtq persons) were often sacrificed just in furtherance of the plot. In comics the trend was called "fridging", and is widely despised now, though quite common in the 70's and 80's. There were several characters who suffered this fate on TNG and while it was obviously not remotely controversial at the time, it's hard not to react in this different climate to the casual brutality towards these 'minor' players. With metacommentary in mind, K'Ehleyr was too much for the time. Strong, smart, gutsy, sarcastic, with a cutting wit and charisma for days.
Had the show been written now, she would have been a strong candidate for a spinoff series. This was a time however where female characters were often given short shrift, and their stories neutered to give more time and pathos to the male characters.
(vague spoilers ahead)
As sad as her loss is, she was a big influence on Star Trek going forward, and it's not hard to see why this 'minor' player, is such a touchstone for fans, and future roles in future iterations of the show. She is a big part of the mold for characters like Dax, Nerys, Janeway, Seven, B'lana, even later day incarnations like Burnham.
So... in a way... K'Ehleyr and Yar live on in various ways, echoing throughout the rest of the Star Trek universe like ripples on an an ever growing lake.
Sounds of Icheb screaming and killed off so that Seven’s revenge plot can be furthered. Fan favourite Hugh raises eyebrows as he takes a knife to the throat.
I don’t know, I quite like it when writers have the confidence to tell their story, and kill a character for an important plot point development, and not pander to fans all the time which usually has a detrimental effect to the quality.
And in this episode , it did make sense and was a shocking, powerful and pivotal moment for Worf and Alexander. Although there are many examples where the death of a character is cheap, when it’s handled well, as it was in this episode, I have no problem.
The bridge isn't "Ops". Ops is a *station* on the bridge, like Helm or Navigation
Paula was mixing DS9 terminology with TNG. She is almost done with her first watch of DS9. The "bridge" of DS9 is called Ops.
Imagine how awkward it would have been bringing back Suzie Plakson afterwards in TNG as the Vulcan physician Lieutenant Selar? Yikes! I really enjoyed K'Ehleyr. RIP. 😢
She came back as several different characters in different Star Trek series
3:07 Kat is caught off guard
So shocked (9:30) that she couldn't even grab the emotional comfort narwhal. :-(
ROTFLMFAO! (When K'ehleyr appears)
now that's a reaction, Katrina!
I having nothing sarcastic to say today. Saw this coming, wish I didnt for Katrina's sake. But it was a damn good episode
some happy episodes, some not so happy ones. Mark of an excellent series when it can touch you on different emotional levels while entertaining you.
The writers have stated that Duras was indeed responsible for K'Mpec's murder, not Gowron, but they forgot to clearly state it within the episode. They thought it was obvious.
Tasha's death helps remind people that pure evil does exist, it isn't all rainbows & unicorns.
K'ehleyr's death is a reminder that if you are going to poke your nose into matters that people wish remain hidden, you may wind up paying the ultimate price.
In a featurette on the DVD or blue ray of this season, Michael Dorn said " the writers approached me one day and asked what would really piss off Worf. I said killing his mate. Me and my big mouth. Suzie plackston(aka kalar) still hasn't forgiven me to this day." He said that with a chuckle so I don't know if he was serious or joking about the last part.
It’s the hard times that make us appreciate the good times.
I liked Kaylar too, but her death was so, to push Worf's arc which is by far one of the most compelling one's in TNG...so her treatment dough unfair, eleveted the level of the series as a whole imo..i mean in real life when you mess whi so high up powers that be...some people will die.
One of my favorite episodes highlighting Worf.
And that fight with Duras!!
Worf could care less whither he got his name back or not. Not to mention his Starfleet career. Duras had to die.
And all the other Klingons were ok with it. Seems the "right of vengeance" for a mate trumps his disgrace as a traitor as far as Klingon law goes.
This episode solidified Worf as my favorite character going forward.
K'mpec's masterstroke was his order on Picard, knowing that JLP would never betray him.
Riker: Worf!!
Worf: Not this time. :) We fooled you. Have you ever ridden a bicycle?
Katrina, you've got to understand that despite his human upbringing and Starfleet's training having pacified Worf quite bit, he's still a Klingon at heart. He reacted the Klingon Way just because a Klingon killed Keyl'eyhr; a Klingon matter requires a Klingon solution, they are so stubborn.
I can agree that sometimes Honor is a little too serious, especially in Worf's case because he was told from an exterior point of view about Klingon culture and he tried to visualise it from there, he thought Honor was everything and took it tts highest point like a newly converted would do in any religion, being more zealous than a current practitioner of the said religion. As the old saying goes: "Nothing is worse than newly converted fellow."
And don't forget that Worf was about the same age when his parents died on Kitomer. He knows how it feels.
I can understant that you doubt the system, it is flawed but so is the Human being in general, whatever the system, there will always be someone to take advantage of it somehow and if that person wields the power... So don't be so zealous about it yourself or you would eventually become the same thing as what you hate to much. You'll eventually figure it out as you are no stupid woman at all, just be patient.
Oh and the actress playing the ambassador appears in other roles throughout the franchise, she's always good in her roles, very charismatic and always has got style.
I just hope that you will eventually continue to watch the episodes together in the same room as you were doing before the pandemic started.
One of the most badass and bravest female characters written in ST history.
And they killed her for story impact. It sucks.
*hugs for Katrina*
The actress who played Kaylar will be back... but at this rate you will have to wait a LONG time to see her again.
Wil Wheaton (Wesley) actually was 18 when they filmed this episode. And the 2 episodes before that.
I really love seeing how much Katrina has grown to love the show, like we do!
I also think she will like a certain character in Voyager, based on her feelings about K'Ehleyr.
Assuming you're talking about B'elanna, i like her a lot but she doesn't really stand up to K'ehleyr. Not independent enough IMO. I never really appreciated K enough because she was only in first half of series when I was too young (and quality was more shaky)
Poor Kat.
9:26 "I love her so f***ing much" right before she dies
Another happy family reunion.😀

Awesome! If Katrina is saying,"Eat the rich" She will love Deep Space Nine with how much they have anti capitalism messages in the episodes, especially the Ferengi ones.
Then look and all ways remember.
Anyone else noticed that Gowron never blinks? Not here and not in any of his other appearances.
Probably the only criticism to this series which I love and own is that there were so many amazing episodes and then there were the normal ones and people got disappointed when they saw a normal one instead of an exceptional one
Heavy Klingon stuff, and now Worf has a son. Sorry to brush off a clearly emotional episode but I was so young when I saw this and honestly remember so few of these episodes compared to DW and Avatar, so I can't really add much.
Suzie Plakson was great and it did move the story arc forward. Apropos of nothing at all, when do you expect to air the Season Finale? Before Christmas? By my estimation it would be first or second week of Dec.
Worf had no luck with women, poor guy.
Another banger of an episode.
Gonna be a rough one for Kat
I think that killing K'Ehleyr was an even bigger mistake than killing Tasha Yar. Was a so astonishingly good character. She literally stealed the show to the regulars.
I'm looking forward to Katrina getting to meet Ponytail Worf instead of Lord Farquad Worf.
