"I am *not* a merry man!" Is a classic a-worf-able moment. 😅
Extra good because I don't think anyone mentioned "merry men" in that scene which means that Worf is familiar enough with the Robin Hood fables to have objected to it without being told. Not surprising given that he grew up in the Federation, but interesting nonetheless.
@@StarkRG You nailed it!
@@StarkRG I think it makes a fair bit of sense that a Klingon would take an interest in medieval Earth stories about a band of partisans.
Lieutenant Worf: Sir, I protest. I am *not* a merry man!
one of the greatest lines in the history of all of star trek
@@jakehodgson82 That and
"sorry."
@@Helbore I love how Geordi is hammily plucking the lute at random.
@@rafetizer And then Worf finally smashing it.
It's simply that the description of 'merry' flies in the face of everything Worf Son Of Mog stands for...and of course 'man' is insensitive & insulting.
Really looking forward to the next episode - The Drumhead
That should get a reaction from Kat and the one after will as well.
John de Lancie as Q is just perfect casting
Oh absolutely!
I truly believe that if they had cast ANYONE else, (no matter HOW talented) Q 'would' have ended up as a "one off" character. (as initially intended)
But he is just SO perfect in the role!
His Dry humor (You are simply IMPOSSIBLE to buy a gift for!) always makes me smile, yet he is always able to maintain that underlying sense of menace & danger (as needed).
“Sir, I protest! I AM NOT A MERRY MAN!”
You can't go wrong with a "Q" episode!
Awww, they cut out Worf smashing Geordie's lute!
Worf has gotten great comedy since : "Is there anything I can prove to you that I'm mortal" "Yeah DIE"
Paula is wearing a very appropriate t-shirt. The actor who played Sir Guy of Gisbourne is Clive Revill who voiced The Emperor in the original theatrical version of The Empire Strikes Back.
Geordi: *twang-twang twang-twang twang*
Worf: *takes and smashes the mandolin- hands it back to Geordi* "...sorry."
Best Worf moment.
Think you might jump over to DS9 for "Q-Less" between seasons?
Great Animal House reference.
I like the "I'm NOT a Merry Man!!" quote better. Sorry; Not sorry. :P
Picard is always very territorial when it comes to his chair, whether on the bridge, his ready room, or the senior officers' conference room.
It's so hard to pick a favorite moment in this episode, but Vash cuddling into Picard's Bridge chair may be it!
TNG does have some of the best occasional characters, Q, Vash and Luxwana Troi!
And Mr. Broccoli.
I think only DS9's great Garak can equal Q.
@@andrewr255 I would agree
Fun side fact: The actor playing the Guy of Gisborn is Clive Revill. To Star Wars fans he is known as the voice of the Emperor in the original version of "The Empire Strikes Back".
Sometimes,Q messing with Picard is like Mr. Myzptlk pestering Superman. How's that for nerdy? lol
Even though we've seen other powerful entities on ST,it's always curious to me that a devout atheist like the late Gene Roddenberry had one become an almost semi-regular cast member. Kudos to the writers for giving Q plenty of humor, depth, etc. and not just be a horrible one note villain.
@@Sairin13 Lol Yeah,I suppose it would.
Semi spoiler here: in the end it can be argued Q was no longer a villain.
Katrina's personality makes me 100% sure she'll take to Kira Nerys from DS9 and B'Elanna Torres from Voyager like a moth to flame.
Strong woman
Katrina giggling uncontrollably after the introduction to the Robin Hood plot after the episode with 12 is absolutely perfect
Worf breaking the lute, "Sorry."
He was channeling Jon Belushi.
@@Axemantitan Yep, from Animal House
Lol, Vash is one o' my favorite one-off TNG characters.
Yes, apparently, of the main cast, Gates and Marina were actually the only ones who'd had prior training for swordfighting and have since expressed their dissatisfaction that their characters had to be reduced to fighting via smashing pottery over the heads of baddies (and subsequently smiling and looking pleasantly surprised they pulled it off), while the men had to get their own training.
Most shows insist on doing the ambiguous relationship for romantic tension stuff. Here it's mostly under-the-surface deep affection between characters, but not enough to be explicitly acknowledged mosta the time. If a character has a romance with usually a guest character, the other character with the unacknowledged feelings either doesn't have a problem with it or, if they do, they realize that's their own issue and not the person considering the possibility. But it's hilarious when both Beverly and Vash will give Picard a hard time without any effort whatsoever.
This one of the things I like about TNG: the adults act like adults.
@@theSpaceAmoeba He did tend to enunciate very ... (*ahem) powerfully. I remember an expression I heard in the series "Angel": "Banging it out to the cheap seats"
Apparently Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden were mad that as women all they got to do was smash pots on heads instead of fighting with swords.
I think they were the only two who had past experience of sword fighting?
@@andrewgwilliam4831 With the exception of Patrick I'm pretty sure thats right.
I love this episode so much.
....You know, I never thought about it until you mentioned it, but when you said many fans don't love this episode as much as some of the others because it's less 'SciFi-heavy' it made me realize that perhaps I love it all the more because it's more 'fantasy' / less SciFi. But really, Vash & Q -- oh goodness, true love -- the 'more-fantasy-less-SciFi' is just icing on the cake!
"I'm sorry I'm late." Good catch Katrina.
Nope, that's it. Just commending you on catching it whilst reacting to the situation.
Also John deLancie is always a win *ding* Oh to add a fun fact, today is the 34th anniversary of the Airing of Encounter At Farpoint
Fun fact--the ladies in the crew were the only ones who had previous sword training, and they were the only ones not sword fighting in the final fight.
next episode has one of my favorite quotes from all of Sci fi, I love Drumhead. it begins to show the flaws in the "utopian federation" that really begins to get fleshed out later in TNG, before opening the throttle in DS9. The only other major flaw shown so far, was with Miles Obrien when the Cardassians were first on screen, and Obrien and the one spoon head at the bar had a little chat, about the border war.
You should see Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) with Errol Flynn. This episode had a few identical moments to that movie.
This episode was made for Kat
Q messing with worf is pudding but he dose Beverly dirty when he transforms her into a dog
"Such MARvelous duplicity, this is WONderful!"
Such a fun episode! Great reaction, ladies!!!
I've been rewatching Star Trek Voyager clips on CZcams, Gosh I miss new weekly episodes of Voyager, they are so good... I can just here Katrina now saying at some point "I... f#*king... love... Captain Janeway"
would be great to see them react to Vash on DS9, that kind of neatly wraps up her story, though maybe the Gals would need to see all of DS9 just to cover the other stories going on at the time, yup, I'd watch that too 😁
Me hopes they react to DS9 next!
This was the first episode of TNG I ever saw, so until i saw another episode I thought Data normally looked obese. :)
I don't know if it was intentional but how perfect for episode 420 lol
@@Renegade2786 Or they may have written it with the idea in mind that it would be the 420 episode and should be an episode that should be viewed while high lol.
Can't wait till the season finale Kat is going to flip out 🤣
7:30 As the Sheriff's police siren wails outside the castle
FYI
Patrick Stewart was engaged to Jennifer Hetrick (Vash) while filming this episode
Knew Katrina would love this one. Always nice to see Vash. This episode has a sequel in DS9. It was criticized for bringing over too many TNG elements into DS9 too early, and some comparisons being too obvious. But I liked it. In retrospect, it's a bit hard to explain that particular episode of DS9 (and Vash's knowledge or lack thereof) for certain spoiler-y reasons. But it does make for some fun head canon, in terms of what Vash did or didn't know, what she chose to reveal or not reveal and why. (in-universe, that is. Out-of-universe it was obviously because certain things just hadn't been set up yet.) And, for that matter, what Q chose to reveal, and not reveal to the Federation...
I am not a merry man! Still gets me every time.
Troi and Beaverly did not use a sword.
Worf destroying that instrument and apologizing!
This is a fantastic episode and Vash is such a fun character.
Classic Q. I love it 👍can't wait for when Vash returns in DS9
Another quality stuffed cat video!
Little did I know that kitty romance was just moments away.
I like to think that Wesley Crusher is secretly Vash and Q's kid. Through a accident Beverley's husband and son were killed by Q's time traveling shenanigans, and they replace him with Wesley, and that is why he is secretly so smart, and can can warp time. That also explains why Q comes back to check-in on his son whom is being protected by Picard, as the adopted type father.
Still 2 seasons away from is probably my favorite TNG episode. "Lessons." But a lot of great episodes between now and then to enjoy.
This one is fun. I've always enjoyed it.
Given your personnality Katrina, I think that in DS9, you will love Kyra Neris.
This episode is a banger and I won't hear a word against it. I was a merry man watching this.
Q episodes are so much fun.
Theres a Vash and Q episode early on during season 1 of DS9
I can't help but think of it....
you know the thing...
♫"We're men! We're men in tights!"♫
_♫"Yassss!"♫_
"Is Vash's life more worth than Data's, or Troi's, or Worf's." To be honest: No, it's not.
usually not a huge fan of the sillier episodes but toss Q into the mix and you just hold on for the ride.
The producers originally planned to reshoot the scene where actress Jennifer Hetrick tripped over her dress while pacing back & forth, but then decided to keep the scene because they reasoned that Vash would be inexperienced with walking around in such a long period dress, so tripping over it would be perfectly natural.
This is the 3rd time you've had an extremely positive reaction to one of my 10 lease favorite episodes. You've also twice had a negative reaction to one of my top episodes.
I must admit I'd love to have had a scene where Picard sets up Vash & Riker to meet, just so he could watch her eat him for breakfast and spit him out, Happy Holigays from kerk in Scotland
MANDOLIN SOLO!
Robin Hood: Men In Tights!
Great reaction to a fun episode! 😊 Btw, if you like Robin Hood and you haven’t seen it yet, you may like the tv series Robin of Sherwood from ‘84. It has a lot of atmosphere, mystical.
You have to watch "Robin Hood - Men in Tights". Especially because of the guy who appears at the end of the movie.
No! Yes! Yes.
Gallifrey Gals need to discover Farscape. Combines the best qualities of TNG and Who in a series unlike any other.
The funny/shitty thing about this is that Sirtis and MacFadden were the only trained swordsmen in the cast.
Ever notice writers always like to make super powerful 5th dimensional beings as spineless prankersters? Superman has Mxyzptlk. Dr Who had the "dream master" with Rory and pregnant Emilia. Star Trek has Q.
I'm sure there are others. It's like writers being able to plagiarize ideas but as long as the change the name it's ok.
It would be difficult to write a truly all-powerful archvillain that gets defeated over and over. If Q's true opinion in life really WAS that the human race didn't deserve to exist, we simply wouldn't, show over. That makes for bad TV viewing, sooooo all-powerful prankster who inadvertently helps us learn about ourselves in an entertaining way, it is!
I think this episode was historically inaccurate because as far as I can tell it didn’t include one single “Ha ha!”
Glad I caught this! Q is such a little turd but, we love him. :)
perhaps you should consider a certain DS9 ep as a follow up, unless you are intending to react to the series as well.
Patrick Stewart must have taken a deep breath before saying 'Robin Hood'. The way you say it in the US (RO-bin Hood) is different from the way we say it in the UK (Robin HOOD).
Funnily enough, when Q compliments Picard towards the end, he says it 'correctly'.
That aside, love QPid.
Since you mentioned DS9... here's my regular request for you to please please please react to DS9 as well. 🙈😅
I’m sure they will but it’s way too early, DS9 doesn’t start until TNG season 6/7. They’ll probably do it after TNG.
They should start interweaving DS9 episodes in with TNG just as they aired in real life, after TNG 6x11 "Chain of Command, Part II".
Agree but not until after episodes 16 and 17 of season 6 else the DS9 intro would be out of sync
Ah yes, the one with a favorite line in my gaming group ever since we watched the original broadcast: "I protest,...I AM NOT a Merry Man!"
I really hated this episode as a kid, as I found it too cringey, but I've softened to it over the years and come to embrace the silliness! If it happened too often, it would be annoying, but a silly episode now and again can be a welcome break from the more serious stuff.
I was surprised that neither Paula or Katrina were a little put out by the slightly sexist fight scene, where Troi and Crusher are reduced to smashing pots over guard's heads. I remember reading an interview with Gates McFadden where she said she was a bit annoyed by that as she's fully trained in stage fencing and one of the men had any experience prior to this episode, yet all she gets to do is look a little flustered as she drops a pot on someone's head! Even for me as a young boy watching in the early 90s, I found it weirdly outdated to see the women acting so uncharacteristically "girly," (for want of a better term).
Also, mentioning DS9, you are getting closer and closer to when it aired in relation to TNG. If you do decide to watch it (and I really hope you do), I hope you do it in proper release order, alongside TNG, rather than wait until you've finished TNG and then start DS9. Whilst there isn't a lot of crossover, there are a few story threads that make more sense if both series are watched in parallel.
It's a fair point, but it's also in-line with the Robin Hood universe. While it sucks for McFadden, Dr. Crusher is not the same as her actor.
@@retromillenium Unfortunately, it has a less interesting origin. It was based on a weapon from an old Megadrive/Genesis game called Jungle Strike and I just thought it sounded cool. However, it turned out I'd misremembered it and it was actually called a Hellfire! But I've maintained it as an online identity for 20-odd years now and so no longer care that its totally inaccurate.
I should've just claimed it really was a reference to the Hydran Hellbore, shouldn't I? ;)
@@rafetizer Yes, they obviously just decided to follow what would be more fitting for the legend. But at the same time, the TNG crew are not from that period and it would have made for an unorthodox tactic that the "baddies," wouldn't have predicted.
I don't think McFadden was really angry about it per se, but thought it was somewhat ironic that all the men had tp act like master swordsmen, yet none of them knew what they were doing and the one person who actually knew how to sword fight got lumbered with a flower pot!
After you 2 are done with season 7 of TNG, can you please do reaction videos to Deep Space Nine? Worf joins the crew in season 4 and I feel that they develop his character so much better in DS9 then they did in TNG.
Sorry my heart sinks when see Q episode it's always the same wind up routine ,
Will you two ever post the episode 4 of this season? The one where picard goes home to his brother. It was taken down and i was wondering if you were ever going to repost it?
We've tried reposting it a few times now. Its sitting in CZcams/CBS jail unfortunately.
@@KatAlysha well thats a bummer. i would have love to seen your reaction to Picards break down. Stewart did such a good job acting it. It hurts to watch it, even now for me and ive seen that episode dozens of times
Double guests
ooh,, Q
Sadly, most of us guys are pretty Q-less when women are involved.
I find the TNG Worf very 2 dimensional compared to the DS9 Worf. Here he's humorless and an object of derision; on DS9 he has a sense of humor and it's dark. Plus he gets to actually do stuff whereas on TNG he's always told to stand down.
I''m not a fan of Q episodes or holodeck ones, stick with reality, focus your imagination on the future, the characters, the interactions. For me Kira is one of the best, she has layers that are believable and compelling, she moves me. Same goes for Sisko, Avery Brooks is an excellent actor.
To each their own, but Brooks way of annunciating always seemed to much like he was, well an "actooor", if you know what I mean.
TNG really made Worf a one dimensional character for the first couple of seasons. He was the "Klingon", always gruff and always looking for a battle. I thought the portrayal of Worf originally was annoying. Yes, he was a Klingon, but he had been raised by humans and had attended and graduated from Starfleet Academy. From those experiences he would have been more adjusted than they presented.
I enjoyed how they eventually did more with his character, giving him more background, and depth to his character, later in TNG and then in DS9.
