Ah, Settlers of Kataan. One of the best episodes/stories of the entire series, if not the franchise. (I will never stop finding it remarkable how often I find myself saying this over and over about the series..)
Yyyeah, Paula, I’ve seen this countless times now but I can remember back to the first time, few times really, seeing this and not thinking *as* highly of it as I later have. What the probe accomplished is impressive, but I think there’s something so much profoundly more to humble simplicity to the heart of the story that ends up somehow cutting through so many other episodes that are also all fantastically great because of their complexity and themes.
This made me truly appreciate archaeology and how an artifact as simple as a flute can connect us to the lives of people we’ve never known from civilizations now dead for thousands of years.

I STILL tear up when I hear that recorder song. (it's practically Pavlovian now)
THIS episode was when TNG broke the mold and took the best aspects of a TOS style episode & made it their own.
Getting to know all these people 1st hand as the fact that they are inevitably doomed gets slowly revealed just RIPS your heard out!
Don't know if it is INTENTIONALLY a commentary on this, but it sure shows how much more Impactful death is the more you know the person who died.
10,000 strangers on the other side of the world die to some natural disaster? "Oh, how tragic."
One friend or family member passes? You could be inconsolable for days or even WEEKS! (human nature I guess)
Bunch of Stormtroopers get blasted? No big deal.
Armies get mowed down in fictional media? Huh.
Alderaan gets destroyed? Oh well, moving on.
Watching the Inner Light? Break down in tears & be reduced to a quivering mess.

  • @paladinrose
    @paladinrose Před 2 lety +5

There's maybe no one that the Kataanians could have found to better be a steward of their legacy. Not only someone who had the position - but an archaeologist who once loudly proclaimed to his first officer that he was "not a family man!".
The not-a-family-man had a wife, children, and grandchildren. He learned to be so much more than he ever let himself be as captain of the enterprise. He was just the right person to truly grow from their history.
And he's a scientist, with the means, crew, and influence to retrieve the probe, follow its path back to Kataan, and get right to work on recollecting and preserving any and every shred of their existence that he can.
While Picard's duties certainly wouldn't have allowed him to do much of that, personally, I think it's an incredibly safe bet that far more of their society managed to be unearthed and remembered than they would have expected.

@@TheNoiseySpectator Their sun wasn't slowly going nova. Suns don't do that. For a star to "slowly go nova" just means to live its life, AND be large enough for a nova to take place.
Data mentions that the probe came from a dead world - Kataan is still very much there. It's just dead due to increased solar radiation.
It was likely going through a late-stage spectral shift because of heavier elements that were stifling OR exacerbating the fusion process. But we DO know for sure that it's still there.

The title "The Inner Light" was taken from the song "The Inner Light" by The Beatles (technically by George Harrison and performed by him and some Indian musicians with only some harmonizing vocals from Lennon/McCartney on the last line of the song).
Episode screenwriter Morgan Gendel, a Beatles fan, was inspired by the song with its lyrics about experiencing so much without going anywhere. The lyrics were inspired by Harrison's interest in transcendental meditation and the lyrics were based on a poem from the Tao Te Ching, written around 400 BC.
"Without going out of my door, I can know all things on Earth
Without looking out of my window, I could know the ways of Heaven
    The farther one travels
    The less one knows
    The less one really knows
Without going out of your door, you can know all things on Earth

I don't know whether I've mentioned this before, but -- when TNG first came on the air, of course (as a 27-year-old TOS fan) I was excited about the possibility of a new Trek series, I was over the moon when I discovered that Patrick Stewart was going to play the captain. I had first seen him as Sejanus in four episodes of the series I, Claudius in the mid-70s, and found him riveting; and every time I saw him even for a few moments in any piece media -- whether it was for a few scenes in the 1984 Dune, a few minutes in Excalibur, or a few *seconds* in Smiley's People -- he always held my attention. I knew I was going to love anything he was in. And, indeed, during the first two seasons, IMO, he and Brent Spiner held that series together, because some of the writing in S1 and S2 was so bad that it needed that level of skill to pull it off.

Around 12:22 - 12:45 I just wanted to give Katrina a massive hug. I know the feelings behind that look on her face, so I'm transmitting a virtual hug to her!
As for the episode, let's face it - Patrick Stewart fucking delivers the goods in this one. Give that man some meat to work with and he's just an absolute powerhouse. Its his performance that elevates an interesting premise and turns it into an absolute classic.
For me, seasons 3, 4 and 5 are peak Star Trek. These (for me, anyway) are the golden years where pretty much every episode is solid. Even the weaker episodes would be good episodes in any other season. They're only weak by comparison to those around them. That's not to say there aren't some amazing episodes still to come (on both TNG and other Trek shows), but for a pure run of non-stop greatness with little filler, these seasons have yet to be beaten and I kinda feel that we'll never truly have Trek like this again.

Picard gets to see what life would have been like if he'd chosen another path. There's another episode in the same vein but, patience.
Like the best of ST, this one makes you feel and think about a lot of things.
It's a wonder Picard hasn't went crazy after "mind melding" with Sarek and now being the repository for an entire race!
And even though he goes back to his usual routine, would say this helps in setting up the character to open up a little more to his friends later on as it gets near the end.
    Great episode.

I sob like a baby whenever I see this episode, and I've seen it at least half-a-dozen times.
It is now (30 years later) even more poignant for me, because of course the doom faced by the people of Kataan may well be the doom we are all facing. Kamin's anguish looking at his grandson -- "He deserves a long, full, life, and he's not going to get one" -- may be something my *own* *children* may someday say about their grandchildren. This desperate attempt to save a little piece of their culture, their existence, for an unknown future, may be something we ourselves someday do. It feels so bleak. (Jeez, I'm starting to cry again.)
I think that this episode is somewhat based on Arthur C. Clarke's devastating short story, "The Star" (1955), in which another doomed people makes a similar bid for immortality.

Aside from it just being a beautiful piece of art on its own, one thing I love about this episode is that it really did change Picard's character forever. He's presented in the earlier seasons as an aging man who had many years ago made a conscious choice to not have a family so he could focus on an often dangerous career, and who didn't reflect on that choice much. This episode was the beginning of an arc of Picard grappling with the realities and sacrifices of that decision in a way that's usually reserved for female characters.

There's a lot that doesn't make sense about the memory probe which you just have to ignore for the sake of the story, like how you have to ignore how Geordie and Ro can breathe air and stand on the ground in The Next Phase.
