My favorite part of the episode was when Riker asked Troi if Barclay's pass was successful.
Troi just smirks and walks away. :D
I dig that visual when the Enterprise arrives at the Cytherian home-world. They did a good job of showing us we're not in Kansas anymore.
I love the expression on Katrina's face when Barclay is asking Troi to go on a date with him. When Troi initially turned him down, I was expecting Katrina to be like "I'll go with ya, Reg!"
This is one of my favorite episodes! People really love Barclay. He's all of us at one point in life. Great reactions! Hopefully another TOS episode will be coming up for you gals. 😀👍
I did not realize this at the time it first aired but the Barcley/Computer voice really is is giving off a Hal 9000 from 2001 vibe.
"I'm sorry Captain, I can't do that."
Yes, that was my impression as well! Specially Jordi at the Jeffreys tube, felt like a tribute to when Bowman disconnected HAL's circuits.
Put your head under cold water ,,always wakes you up...Like my parents always told me wash your face before you start your day.... This is one of my favorite episodes.. I actually met the actor who plays Mr. Barclay (Dwight) A few times... One of my favorite actors ...I absolutely loved him in the A Team As a kid growing up He's extremely generous and a nice guy... The next episode is great I loved it
Katrina's emotional investment going off the charts is everything.. Dwight Schultz's range in this ep is pretty impressive. (He was previously most famous for playing "Howling Mad" Murdock on The A Team, a show where the team is a group of special forces wrongly convicted of a crime they didn't commit in the Vietnam War, and where he was the legally insane but genius member.)
The "subspace inversion" jump is the same effect (I think, or very similar/reminiscent of) as the ones used in Star Trek IV, and at end of the old Disney '70s scifi classic, The Black Hole.
Oh I LOVED "The A-Team"! (& Dwight Shultz) Such a fun, violently-campy TV series. (a little like the Looney Toons cartoons of the same era. . .which I ALSO loved)
Watching "Howling Mad" crank up his eccentricities to "11" to fool the authorities into believing he was "actually" insane, was always a hoot.
I wonder if the Gallifrey Gals would enjoy The A-Team?
Too bad he turned into a MAGA fascist
Brocolli was so good at being awkward and cringey, but could also be very suave and badass.
Don't think I really ever picked up on the "2001: A Space Odyssey" vibes when I watched this when I was younger, but it's still a fun episode with a good payoff. I wish we saw the Cytherians again.
Yeah and Barclay's 'I'm afraid I can't do that' is pure HAL.
Made it before CBS
This is my favorite Barkley episode. I like how confident he is once he gets changed. Barkley is the everyman of this crew.
"Whats wrong with me do you think? Is it that I'm acting like a smug, self-important know it all? If that continues you'll have to make me a main character."
"We are in danger," Data said calmly.
"...You know, it's true. I can't explain it. In the past few days, I've found confidence I never knew was there..."
Kat, glad you liked this one. This one is one of my favorites. Next week...your mind might melt.
I love Riker's reaction to Barclay's explanation of how he upgraded the shields.
_"ENGINEERING STUFF!"_
"......oh."
if Riker is lost, imagine the rest of the crew
Lol, when Barklay said "I'm afraid I can't do that, sir.", I got some serious flashbacks of HAL in 2001.
Another quality cat video!
which I will watch as soon as I get back from picking up food
assuming it hasn't been blocked in the meantime
the video
or the food
either one
Another quality cat gif!
Gotta love Katrina's reactions in this episode.
I actually forgot how good this episode was.
And look at all the close ups of Gates in this episode, as she's well into her pregnancy at this point so they can't show that
the episode were Barclay became fan fave..and to me a source of inspiration while struggling with my own case of S.A.D. ---3 cheers for Barclay and O'brian...1st to characters in new TREK lore representing those not so ''a cut above'' of society in the best of mythological cinema universes out there
This begins a streak of some of the best writing of TNG episodes.
I forgot how many times the Argus array shows up. Like 4 or 5 times in later seasons
Pitty they never keep these computer logs so they can look back and remember next time they need more shield power what happened
they wouldn't understand it anyway they don't have his heightened intelligence so to them they might research the logs but never figure out exactly what he did. La Forge said "i don't know how he did it". It would be like giving a instruction manual on how to build a nuclear bomb to some scientist in the 15th century who has no idea what radioactive elements are, or those that aren't even discovered yet, etc.
Barclay is "Howling Mad"
Deanna - "I think you will carry this with you and might impact you in ways you don't even realize" - Paula gnaws her lip....
Dwight Shultz is a remarkable actor.
Troi: "But it's possible to carry something of that experience through the rest of your life." I'm just thinking about Barclay beeing part of the starfleet team that made contact with the Voyager.
One of my top 10 episodes
Barkley’s speech to Dr. Crusher is from Cyrano de Bergerac. If you want a change of pace, Gerard Depardieu stars in a film version. It’s in French, but also really, really excellent.
"You can just edit those out." Narrator: They were not edited out... and were funny.
For years, I only knew Dwight Schultz in the role of Barclay. I had no idea how great an actor he was. He's lent his voice to animated characters that are totally unlike Barclay, he's an awesome actor!
I pity the fool.
@@ajivins1 I watched A-Team when I was small but I remember none of it other than Mr. T. lol
@@ragingsithmaster Tall guy? Curly hair?
@@ajivins1 When the show premiered in January 1983, I had just turned 2. My only association with the show was knowing that it had Mr. T on it. I saw it only between 2 and 5 years old. I remember He-Man and G1 Transformers more clearly.
My mother told me I used to watch Mork and Mindy in those days, too. I don't recall that either, and Robin Williams is unforgettable.
always liked this one, the return of Barclay and anytime they fuze human and computer in a way that seems to improve everything is fascinating.
Barclay appearing here and there during the series (amongst other people) is great. The neural interface was a generally practical effect too with actual lasers being used. Not sure they protected his eyes though. We are getting towards the end of the season now. :D
Barcley is like top three favorite Trek characters for me..haha, love him so much. He's just like a normal dude, like, I can see myself doing some of the same things as him if I was surrounded by all these "superstars of starfleet" or whatever you wanna call the Enterprise crew..haha
Barclay is more machine now.
Reginald Barclay goes on to make one hell of an impact for Starfleet later in his career... and one Federation Starship and her Crew in particular.
Nice twist huh. This is the as another episode that always stuck with me when I was as a kid
Damn Barclay snuck into my heart over time
"Barclay... gonnae no dae that?"
"How?"
"Just... gonnae no?"
References??? ...Aaaah. Lol yes 😂 my favourite episode
7:32 begins a short sequence homage to 2001: A Space Odysee
Barclay buildt that ultra cool machine as fast his A-Team fellows the improved weapons in the other show.
I love Barclay! He's such a great character. I always felt a connection with him and Data. I feel like Barclay is the most human representation of humanity. Everyone else has a quirk or two but Barclay is the whole package.
Just looked ahead, and I think Katrina is really gonna like most of the next 40 episodes or so LOL
This episode has some "2001 A Space Odyssey" vibes. Barclay even says "I'm afraid I can't do that" at one point.
Ironically for Katrina, Dwight Schultz was one of the reasons Classic Who did so badly in the ratings during the 80s - ITV (Independent TeleVision BBC's oldest rival) started showing the A-Team about 10/15 minutes before Who aired.
As much as I LOVE this episode, the thing that I ALWAYS HATED was the fact that nether Starfleet (nor even just the Enterprise) EVER used that trick to "increase shield strength by 300%" EVER AGAIN!
WTF man?
Federation "security" would be MASSIVELY stronger if that technique was employed by all of Starfleet! ANY invasion force in the future, would suddenly need THREE TIMES the firepower to make any headway.
I HATE when show miss/ abandon continuity.
Also, Barkley = BEST guest character EVER!
that's because they couldn't Barclay did it with his enhanced intelligence and couldn't be replicated. I'm sure they had some reading and such to review and work on, but no one in starfleet has his heightened brain so they wouldn't be able to reproduce what he did. Even La Forge said "i don't know how he did it..."
The only way they could’ve improved this: like John Travolta in “Phenomenon”, make the probe trigger more curiosity in Barclay, rather than more intelligence. Seeing him push the intellectual limits on his own would be far more intriguing.
Of course, doing that would just highlight how petty and manipulative the senior staff truly are.
That’s a messed up way to explore. All they had to do was ask. Hey, you wanna come over?
Fun fact: The Argus phalanx will be back in a later season.
The Gallifrey Gals love Barclay although in Cockney Rhyming Slangn from theEastEnd of London here in the UK his name is much more appropriate....................
personally I think they should have kept smart Barkly He could have defeated the Borg or mapped other quadrants.
I do love this episode.
This episode was a high-point!
cant wait til my fav episode 4x21
Had to be one of my favorite episodes.
One of my favorite episodes
Very Good Reactions to what I thought was a very good story.
frikkin' Broccoli...
If you want to see Barclay (the actor) in another good role, go watch "Fat Man and Little Boy". Its the story about the Atomic Bomb where he plays Alan Oppenheimer, its creator.
Barclay is always a win.
6:35 Did they discuss whatever was crossing her mione here? I missed something.
Let's use Barclay 2000 iQ and invent transwarp..............
If you're looking for a great scifi show to react to, Babylon 5 is amazing!!
Seconded!
Thirded!!!👍
Fourthded 😁
@@bryanfoster362 Could someone possibly make it a Fifthed for B5!!!👍👍👍👍---❓🤔
Sixthed. Season 3 and 4 is still some of the best sci-fi tv you can experience and not much comes close.
Broccoli is Bae! 🥰
Barclay---Computer create a neural interface capable of....
Computer there is no record of such device in....
Barclay..no problem,...here's how you build it.........WTF!!!!!??...booooom--------mind blown!

My favorite season of TNG is season 6
Can episode 18 make it to youtube ?
-(8D
Barclay is the best character in TNG, just like Murdock was the best character in The A-Team! Dwight Schultz tends to steal shows he is in!
Barclay was way cooler in 'The A-Team'...
'A Team' reactions next?
Hi ka5 3:27
where is doctor who s09e01 ?
They are doing a section of Classic Who at the moment. S9 will be out when the current Classic Who is done.
I do think Dwight Schultz was a great actor who really knew how to bring a fringe character to life.
Barclay is a mixed bag of problematic and relatable and his TNG episodes for sure leave a mark.
The man himself has taken a far right political swing these last few decades and is known in righty radio circles with some super cringeworthy hot takes. Big ol’ Trump Thumper.
I still enjoy his old work when it pops up but DS himself is a whole mess.
It really is unfortunate he turned out to be a fascist.
Not sure how to say this….you edit out everything Geordi involved himself on a holdeck…yet….Barclay….where he put ship in as much jeopardy as Geordi…..is it the episode, is it the character? Kinda comes across as weak….maybe y’all are missing the point, which is sad….this is the future….perhaps discussion isn’t as fearful as it it now…..just saying.
Unfortunately, the actor who played Barclay, Dwight Schulz (also a star of the A-Team) ended up as a Trump MAGA right wing fascist.
Not that I think you'd care in the slightest...but it's actually offensive to people who have had to live under REAL fascists to call people you don't like "fascists" - especially when the people you're talking about aren't displaying any *actual* fascist tendencies. You're simply watering down the actual dangers of fascism, which is dangerous in itself because you just become the boy who cried wolf.
Again - not that I think you care because I don't think you care who you offend as long as you can paint your political "enemies" the same as brutal dictators and that's probably the most important thing in life to you right now, but hey, I figured I'd point out how offensive and gross you're being.
@@LadyBeyondTheWall your limited perspective and experience aside, the republicans are actual fascists. Sorry but facts don’t care about your feelings.
